Hey , good to see you here Michel.
Can't wait to see what you'll come up with!

07 July 2007, 10:46 PM (

Ok, the concept sketch :)
It's cool to modelise some babes and aliens in the same work, 'hope you like it.
I'll post each character's concept separatly.

PS : not yet full finished but can't wait to post and have feetback.

PS2 : not mentionned that the aliens are surfers too.

07 July 2007, 11:06 PM

baywatch attack! very scary!:D

07 July 2007, 04:54 AM
Ok, now that's just strange.

07 July 2007, 06:05 AM
Cool, now I have your thread address Bookmarked; more easy to find it fast.

Your Concept sketch is surprising, first ; I like the idea of a composition with a lot of details, many face and eyes to 'catch' us, and the way you made full 2 corners of your picture. It's a rich concept, graphically and colourful.

But I don't see really "Strange Behavior" in it ( I critic this, but in my first sketch too I don't see it, and in the sketch of mostly challengers too ).
1) Babes just run and play, they have strange proportions, maybe strange work ;) They are on the beach, their elements.
2) Aliens surfers are more interesting. But , cause of their size and cute design, I understand they don't make scary or frightened the 4 babes.
If I can understand this scene , it's not strange for me.

Now, cause I don't like to give free criticism without some solutions, here is some things I see ;

- Aliens could be bigger and more like real 'monsters'. But hard to give a strange behaviour to an alien ( and more to a surfer alien ) cause we are not logically waiting for something about them. So, it's hard to express the invert behavior of what we are waiting for to create the 'strange behavior'.

A real strange behavior for those girls ( cause we are waiting about their work of helpers ) :
- They watch a guy dying in the sea (or more than one guy), and laught of it together on the beach, duplicating the mimic of dying man as if it was ridiculous to die like this.

If you want we can talk more of our different idea here, with PM , or on 3dvf ( french is more easy, huhu ) or phone. This contest will play more on the concept. We have a summertime to find a good and powerful one !

07 July 2007, 06:28 AM
This will be so funny mate good luck and best wishes:D

07 July 2007, 11:33 AM
lol!! this is so funny :D good luck :)

07 July 2007, 11:48 AM
I must say, cool concept Dude!

The Aliens and baywatchers are indeed a strange mix, especially the babes kicking the monsters out of the Malibu sand.

I love it:bounce:

Actually I think he's captured some very strange behavior in this concept. When I first looked at it I thought "Whoa! That's strange", and funny too. Of course I've always thought of the baywatch girls as strange to begin with.

I guess it's everyone's own interpretation of what strange behavior is. Personally, just looking at baywatch girls laughing at a dying guy doesn't seem strange to me, it just seems sick.

07 July 2007, 06:36 PM (

Just finishing the colors.

07 July 2007, 08:44 AM
First thanx for all your comments :)

mv : , i'm a big fan of your artworks.

DeeVad : thank you for the advice and proposals, you're probably right,
it's more funny than strange, I agree.

So, it's just a picture I will like to make and it's the most important for me,
at this time I need to make some fun stuffs and forget some bad news :)

07 July 2007, 09:51 AM
Ok, with time I see your project is good and feet to the rules.
Maybe I was more attached to all those compositions around one main character and mimic ( and at least the choice I personally made for my thread) .
In my last post I was maybe to strong on the criticisms, sorry ;)

so : now THE question for you : 2D or 3D ?

07 July 2007, 11:36 AM
This is a great fun sketch, something different.

07 July 2007, 03:58 PM
Ha haHaHahA So funny. really like it.
Good sketch and colors.
good luck.

07 July 2007, 08:21 PM (

Here the first color model sheet for the aliens, let's call him Blobby.

DeeVad : I'll use 3D but with massive composited passes and layers with post-production in Photoshop (and lot of fun with Mudbox, Zbrush too ;) )

07 July 2007, 07:24 AM
Mouarf :)
It's a fun project ...

07 July 2007, 07:55 AM
Interesting :scream:

Great start Michel. This is going to be a nice picture compo at the end:bounce:

07 July 2007, 08:40 AM
Very crazy, i love you're drawing style !

Wait to see the model ;)

07 July 2007, 06:03 PM (

Second alien, named Speedy, 'cause with four legs he's run pretty fast :)
Just in progress for color, post finished soon...

07 July 2007, 07:01 PM

07 July 2007, 08:54 AM (

Here the fist babe, let's call her Jasmin, freely inspired from Yasmine Bleeth. Final color later on the day.

07 July 2007, 08:17 PM (

Second babe, inspired, from of course, Pamela Anderson, the archetypal baywatch's babe...

07 July 2007, 08:22 PM (

Third babe, hem athletic like alexandra paul...

07 July 2007, 12:12 PM
I like it :)
Their expressions are really great ! And you found well their caricatural side ;)
Je traduis parce que je sens que c pas clair :
Je voulais dire que tu as bien retransmis leurs expressions dans tes caricatures ;)

07 July 2007, 12:46 PM
The way you caricatured the anatomy looks really funny, nice style... keep it up:thumbsup:

07 July 2007, 04:15 PM
i really dont know what to say here, but i just wanted to wish you luck.

so yea! there you go.

07 July 2007, 08:17 PM
Il y a tout mayalounge sur ton post Michel ;)

Bonne chance pour ce challenge !!

07 July 2007, 08:19 AM
these are superb! love the last one. can't wait to see them in 3d! have fun!

07 July 2007, 08:15 PM (

Here the start to sculpting research with Mudbox, I use a very low and simple mesh to make a '3D scan like' model, then I'll build a new mesh from this reference volume.

07 July 2007, 08:17 PM (

Here the workflow I use, from design and posing research and to sculpting research.

07 July 2007, 08:23 PM
DeeVad : I'll use 3D but with massive composited passes and layers with post-production in Photoshop (and lot of fun with Mudbox, Zbrush too ;) )

 This look awesome ! a lot of work on it too , I'm sure you will have one of the best 3D entry, strange behavior from Cgsociety to mix 2D and 3D ; but I like it :buttrock:

Great sketch and 2D pre-prod and really interresting way to catch volume , I suscribe your thread !

07 July 2007, 08:53 PM
this is great stuff-great to see your workflow

07 July 2007, 09:13 PM (

Detailing with Mudbox before mesh reconstruction in Maya.

07 July 2007, 09:15 PM (

Detailing with Mudbox before mesh reconstruction in Maya, with optimal topology to match the sculpted volume (and final detailing with Mudbox and Zbrush).

07 July 2007, 07:47 AM
Mouarf too funny this monster ...
And i have a question why do you use mudbox and zbrush and not only zbrush (i have an idea but i would like your answer) ?

07 July 2007, 02:36 PM
DeeVad : Yep, if a 2D effect is faster and easier than a 3D one, why not :)
I will test some ideas for rendering and compositing with this challenge, it's a beta testing
for me in fact, to make more 2D approach in a 3D scene for rendering, to have an illustration
feeling and not just technical rendering stuffs.

Elendil_le_Grand : I prefer Mudbox for sculpting research, more flexible and fast ergonomic
(same 3D navigation as Maya, layers as Photoshop etc), and Zbrush3 for the last touch,
fine details and map extraction (after reconstruction mesh done).

07 July 2007, 05:00 PM
Woah! Didn't know until now that you are particpating in this challenge. I'm a HUGE fan of your works!

I can see that this is already looking very good. Interesting to see how this develops. I'm keeping an eye on this one.

07 July 2007, 07:40 AM (

07 July 2007, 07:43 AM (

Here a concept color on the sculpted model, I use Zbrush 3 with the colorize tools, it's fun and fast.

What cool tools we have in 3D modeling now :)

07 July 2007, 07:54 AM
Yes the 3d now is really fun and we can forget a little the polygons and the vertex ;)
This monster is really cool ...
Next sir ;)

07 July 2007, 03:17 PM
lovely details in ur work! mudbox sure packs a punch! plus u took some time to work on zbrush .. very cool gel like effect .. yet still maintaining all the muscle details and that cartoony look ... :buttrock: pretty unique style mate! u rock!

good luck dude! have fun! :bounce:

07 July 2007, 08:28 AM (

Transposing 2D concept into 3D with Mudbox and Zbrush (for resymetrizing the model).
I'll add the tongue and make some colors like Blobby.

07 July 2007, 10:14 AM
Hello Michel!

Like many people here I've been a fan of yours for years so it's great to see your working methods... I've yet to embrace (or really even try) Mudbox/Zbrush so it's very interesting to learn that you use them both.

I especially like the idea that people (including yourself) are sculpting their idea & then taking the cage model back to retopologise the mesh to match more smoothly.

Great stuff so far!

07 July 2007, 04:33 PM (

The workflow I use for character pre-modeling.
I like the freedom of sculpting the forms, then it will be time for re-make a clean low poly version, matching the sculpted version.

nwiz25 : yep, both are definitivly my main tools for modeling research and finishing details, can't imagine modeling with box or edge modeling from scratch such characters, so boring...
The sculpted versions are a bit rough, I spend more attention on details with the reconstruct low models, but cartoonish, not so realistic too :)

AJ : I think more and more people adopts this workflow, for me it's way far the fastest and
the better way, you have a good result of your initial idea in a couple of hours, and it's funny to make. Who think it's funny to cut and extrude some polygon to get a boxy shape after 2 hours of work, not me for sure :)

07 July 2007, 05:00 PM (

Color concept for Speedy, transposed on the sculpted model, done with Zbrush 3.
Adding the tongue later...

07 July 2007, 10:16 AM
Strangest entry ever :) very nice touch of absurdity ! i like this.

Nice concept.
i hope u ll have time to finish this very promising work.

07 July 2007, 12:34 PM
This is realy great sculpting and modelling.Very cool characters.

07 July 2007, 02:58 PM
Very nice work !
It's the first time i come here, i didn't see all your 2d researchs until now.
I like your concept sketch, you had a nice idea. Your monsters are sooooo funny, i like them. I also appreciate the humans characters inspired by "alerte à malibu", it's a very nice work.

I'm amazed by all your 2d researchs, it's very interesting.
Thanks for all your advices about your workflow.

I like your 3D cartoon style, your 3D translation is a success, great job dude !

Bonne continuation !! J'attend la suite avec impatience. (Sorry for my poor english)

07 July 2007, 10:55 PM
really great Michel. you're very good at translating your sketches to 3d. tons of personality in your figures!

07 July 2007, 11:17 PM
Extremely funny!
Great idea which is wonderfully visualized.
Great character design.

07 July 2007, 07:42 PM
better and better... really nice... How did you go for the textures and Uv maps?.. Zbrush to maya or texturized with other software as painter.. etc?... can you tell us a lot, thanks. :arteest:

07 July 2007, 10:02 PM
Love those monster's!Rock on man!

08 August 2007, 11:34 AM
All, thanks for your comments :)

stefgrafx : How did you go for the textures and Uv maps?.. Zbrush to maya or texturized with other software as painter.. etc?

For now it's just like a 3D rough model for me, no UVs at all, I used Zbrush's colorize tools,
it's mean painting on polygons without uv or map (but you can bake the colors on uv after).

I'll plan to re-mesh these roughes models with Maya, for clean topology and adding fine details, just for practice and fun, and because we have time for this challenge

08 August 2007, 09:29 AM
any updates :arteest:

i want to see this one finish... i think your entry is amazing so far :D

08 August 2007, 09:51 AM
i think your concept is one of the two or three bests so far. it is "very" strange :).and the realisation you've done so far is incredible.

it would be nice for you to FINISH IT !! :)

08 August 2007, 08:59 PM
Awesome concept and character so far Michel... I look forward to seeing where this goes for sure

09 September 2007, 07:20 AM (

09 September 2007, 07:21 AM (

Thank for the interest of my entry, of course I'll finish it :wise: :)
I was busy for an other cg challenge but now it's over and I focus all my work
for this one ^^.

So, here Mister T, rough sculpted with Mudbox and colored with Zbrush.
I'll start the final mesh cleanup soon for all the alien's models.

09 September 2007, 07:38 AM
glad that you don't let this one down :bounce:
nice come back !

09 September 2007, 10:29 AM (

09 September 2007, 10:31 AM (

09 September 2007, 11:26 AM (

09 September 2007, 11:27 AM (

The first babe I post, Alex.
I used a base low mesh to sculpt all the babes in Mudbox (only one subdivision above the low model), then I'll skin the low and transfert to the middle Hi and resculpt the posing (max 2 subdivisions above the low).
Next babe tomorrow, Sam, a big busty one ;)

09 September 2007, 09:41 PM
Hey Michel, wooooooww, I love all your character designs, awesome mate!! and the first babe is really cool !! great athletic look !! fantastic  ( and i want to see her in high version, wooohooo :D ) Again, awesome work Michel !! :)

09 September 2007, 12:40 PM (

Sam, the (very) blond busty babe.

09 September 2007, 03:39 PM
héhé Pamela looks really cool :scream:

09 September 2007, 03:42 PM
ahah ! excellent !
It is cool to see you doing some cartoon stuff !

09 September 2007, 12:39 PM

09 September 2007, 01:00 PM (
Jasmin, the third babe.

Yeah, cartoon stuff are so relaxing, it's a pleasure to model all these characters :)

09 September 2007, 10:06 PM
Well ... strange idea !
3D execution is perfect, like always ...
But where is David ?

Bonne chance pour la suite

09 September 2007, 07:34 AM (

Well, jocz ( it's strange... behavior :scream: :)

So, I refine all the babes, more sexy and appealing, first light test with no texture and basic shaders for Jasmine.

09 September 2007, 03:13 PM
Hoho ! Jasmin looks much better now ! I also saw Sam on your website, but i prefer the old one because she looks too much nice now. It was a nice idea to create some babes with a scary face like Sam.

Maybe you can make "the new sam" a liiiiiittle more ugly, because she's too much cut in the last version, she looks like jasmin with her smile. I used too like the contrast between the 3 babes, it was more original. But, Jasmin is much better now, keep going i liiiike your work !

09 September 2007, 08:05 PM (

09 September 2007, 08:07 PM (

Smoke-King, thank for your advice, but I prefer to make them more sexy, it's a choice at this time.

09 September 2007, 03:01 AM
Man, excellent job on the models! funny concept too!

09 September 2007, 08:47 AM (

Alex, preLight test.

BloodTaster : Thank , 'like your artwork too

09 September 2007, 02:54 PM
I prefer to make them more sexy, it's a choice at this time.
Roger chef ! a lil' joke...ok it isn't funny :D i'm ashamed forever.

It's well done, they really looks sexier, nice shader for now. In the other hand, they don't looks very smart, cuz of their smiles. I dunno if it's wanted or not, @plouch and have fun !

ps: thanks google traduction xD i hope my english isn't that horrible
ps2: thanks for the wire Mroger !

09 September 2007, 02:59 PM
Really funny,

I'm curious about the next of this thread ...

Here the finals models for the Aliens, and a detailing pass with Zbrush for Blobby.
Next I'll post their posings.

10 October 2007, 03:10 PM
I'm your new fan for sure. It's great that you show so much of your skill/workflow. I'm still a kind of newbie in 3D and am using this challenge to get into working with blender, but when I see your great results using MudBox-Maya-zBrush-Combo it somehow seems like the only right way... hmmm... Re-spect and thanx for sharing knowhow!

10 October 2007, 07:19 PM
Vatrobot : oh thank you :)

Yep, I use this challenge to test and practice some workflow,
and yes, Maya (or other package) with Mudbox/Zbrush are just perfect weapons
to design, model and sculpt, it's the new way I consider the organic's 3D modeling.

Lot of modelers use same workflow, I think it's no way outside it, I mean,
using sculpting tools for design research, then cleaning mesh and complete details model.

You can use all package you want of course (Blender had some sculpt tools I think).
And the most important stuff, it's fun to make a model with this worflow, no more way
pushing vertex one per one or infernal boring cuting edges session :scream:

10 October 2007, 10:24 AM (

10 October 2007, 10:25 AM (

Two first posing for Blobby and Franky, I'll post the two last, Speedy and MisterT soon.

i can't wait to see al those creatures and pretty women together

10 October 2007, 09:53 AM (

Here the final composition, for pre-rendering, color and lighting test.
Just basic materials here and no texturing.
The babes's poses are scratch from skinning, I'm make some improvments with Mudbox.
I removed the fourth (big) babe because already lot of characters on the picture :scream:

10 October 2007, 10:24 AM
Michel your idea is the monsters are afraid by the beach girls ? Of fact, the green monster seems really terrified!!!

Good modelling but just the sands is a few simplified, may be, as you writ it is not simply finished ?

10 October 2007, 12:49 AM
Very funny, glad the monsters don't need glasses. Maybe, depending on the style you are striving for, suggest you make the shadows bit cooler, a hair texture for the blond and a touch of texture for the sand closest to the viewer.

11 November 2007, 01:09 PM
( for CGTalk to done a new deadline, I was out last one ^^.
Let's try to achieve this illustration now.

Karko & Korendo : I make the textures right now for all the stuffs :)

I make a detailing pass with Zbrush for all the Aliens for displacement maps, normals
map and textures maps.
I use BodyPaint 3D for the textures (with Photoshop of coure).

I'll post a pre-rendering version of this alien soon.

11 November 2007, 03:06 PM (

Detailing version of Blobby with Zbrush 3.1.

11 November 2007, 03:57 PM
Pro concepts and very good zbrush work! i like a lot the creature design.

11 November 2007, 12:43 PM
Excellent ! The zbrush stuff is amazing as always !
Do you think you will finish in time Roger ?

11 November 2007, 03:17 PM
OZ, thank :)
Gpepper : Zbrush 3.1 is a fantastic toy, only one hour of work with Blobby ^^.
Call me Michel, it's my first name ;)
I hope I'll finish in time, I work hard in that way...

11 November 2007, 03:31 PM
Call me Michel, it's my first name ;)

Yes, you are right, I use to know this ! Why did I call you Roger ? I don't know, probably I wasn't awaken !

Update for the background, vegetations done in 3D, next update some texturing
and final lighting part.

11 November 2007, 05:06 AM
damn man! your zbrush details are far out amazing! waiting for the final update dude! :bounce: this is really cool indeed! best wishes to you!

11 November 2007, 08:50 AM
Here a pre-final rendering of Speedy, all the rendering passes not yet finalized,
like occlusion, specular or reflection pass, some textures works too.

And the 100% size for final picture A4 300dpi.
'hope you like it :)

Nwiz25 : thank, Zbrush is an amazing tools for detailing

You also make an incredible work with Photoshop on your entry, good luck to you too :applause:

11 November 2007, 05:05 PM (

11 November 2007, 11:29 PM
very cool work  all the models look great. one small thing, in the background composition it almost looks like the girl in the middle is holding the palm tree.

11 November 2007, 09:07 AM (

fx81, thank you and well done, it's really seem that she grabs the palm's tree,
I think I'll move a little bit the tree... or the girl ^^.

Rendering of the background's trees, composited with the rest of the picture.

11 November 2007, 08:04 AM (

Here a quit making of for the background's trees.
Starting with simple element like tree branches and leafs, then combine and render a plate for texture color + alpha channel.

11 November 2007, 08:10 AM (

Modeling some basic tree branches and basic trunks.
Just combining them, duplicate and make deformations with lattice for example (or soft selection).

11 November 2007, 08:13 AM (

Finally, using a random distribution of the textured plates on the tree branches, et voilà, it's done.

Same process for palm trees.

11 November 2007, 04:33 PM (

good luck man, and It's always a pleasure !
