Looking forward to the prelim boards

06 June 2007, 06:15 PM

here's the preliminary boards for shots 1-30.
After that I got distracted by completing the rewrite.
I have my next draft of that done in pencil, now to type it up and add complete the boards.

You will notice I have an unusual boarding style - not just the crappy drawing style, that can't be helped, but i draw the set with chracters in them. Then i place frames around them based on how I want the shot to be. This gives me a sense of comp;osition and movemnt through space. The downside is that no one else can read them.

The downside is that no one else can read them.

That's alright Bill. Da Vinci wrote backwards himself.

Looking closely at your figures, it looks like a romantic scene.

07 July 2007, 12:14 AM
just figured out how to use the uploader.
resubmitted same post below.
slowly but surely working out those ID_ten_T problems.

Looking closely at your figures, it looks like a romantic scene.

yeah it has a steamy side. the way i see it the whole thing is a set up.
she knows who is in that gallery, the power of the art that lives there, and she wants her friend back. Amy's goal is to trade John for the girl with the dragon. Johns goal is to get lucky. It is his predataory desire that makes him an easy victim for Amy. She has to play him just enough to reel him in.

stylistically I would love for the set to have a continually skewed feel to it. No right angles anywhere. Maybe lots of forced perspective to give that sense of skewed reality. After all this is the home of one of Cthulu's portals to this plane of existence. (I was thinking Cthulu before I saw the "My Uncle Cthulu" picture in the inspiration section of the challenge; it knocked me out and i commited to the portrait as a primary source for that piece, it fits my sense of character. His snot changes John's reality that allows him to be brought into the painting. )

07 July 2007, 02:29 AM (

here are some test renders for Amy's character.
I'm going for a version of anime models with textures in a vaguely realistic direction.
i think its a fun explore the stylisation of manga/anime modeling with a quasi-realistic shader style.

i think this still needs alot of work on eye-liner, non-existant eyebrows, eye shader and other areas. i am interested in pushing the shaders in a more realistic direction while keeping the very stylized modeling.

Good Start!!
i'll forward for a more comprehensibleboard to appreciate your concept.

Good luck!!! :)

07 July 2007, 12:13 PM (

Here's more incomprehensible boards, shots 31-60.

07 July 2007, 12:21 PM
Hey Bill, good start on the storyboarding (even though it's incomprehsnible :) )

Looking forward to seeing more as it comes along.

Good luck!

07 July 2007, 08:13 PM (

rough idea for the dragon pose

07 July 2007, 01:14 PM
Nice flow in the dragon concept. Should be fun rigging that creature.

07 July 2007, 06:27 PM
thanks. i'm definitely looking forward to rigging him. I want to do a few pose tests before i commit to 4 legs or 6 and where exactly they should go. thankfully my rigging is better than my storyboarding.

07 July 2007, 07:25 AM
great working with the storyboard

would love to see when its done

All the best !!

07 July 2007, 06:47 PM
Looks great. i hope to see more.
I have a question. Can one guy alone enter the short film section with his own story?

07 July 2007, 01:53 AM
I'm not the person to ask because I don;t work here, I just play here.
You should read the FAQ section.

That said, of course one person can enter. Mim-Armand is doing a nice one person entry so far. I'm sure he's not the only one going it alone. If your story fits the criteria (read the FAQ) then you should enter the short film, if it doesn't, enter the animation section where they say you have a greater chance of winning (and a greater chance of finishing).

07 July 2007, 02:24 AM
Thanks bstout for the help.So thats it. I prefer my own story, therefore i entered the animation section.

07 July 2007, 01:42 AM
Checking for updates.

07 July 2007, 12:32 PM (

here's the latest draft of the script.

thanks for checking for updates Henrix
more soon.

------------accidentally posted this backwards so page 1 is at the end of the script. oops.

07 July 2007, 12:37 PM (

07 July 2007, 12:40 PM (

So here's the script.
Since I figured that Amy knew what was going to happen, i wanted to give her motivation. Also, I like happy endings so John gets what he wants just not how he expects...

now back to modeling.

---oops, i guess I should have submitted them in the other order.
also, thhere will probably be one more rewrite before recording voices so any C and C is welcome.

07 July 2007, 11:58 PM
That's a good re-write. She dragon?! Looking back at your concept, yeah there is a feminine quality to it even without the mammaries. Are you planning to do a lot of editing work for this? The format of your script reads like a script for a stage play - just my impression.

I'll be back next week for the latest.

07 July 2007, 07:59 PM
Hey bstout, thought I'd pop over and see how's things, just read through your screenplay adaptation - top stuff :) Love the way Amy is constantly giving freudian slips about John's eventual fate :D And the fact that John seals his own fate

07 July 2007, 08:25 PM
I agree completely, very nice adaptation with some nice little clues in it.

Although I have to say my favourite bit is the one liner "Now that's art" :applause:

07 July 2007, 01:29 AM
g00d going.. I think our dragon is female also - lol good luck.

07 July 2007, 10:55 AM
Hey nice screenplay Bill, really liked it sofar! I'm sure it can be a great work at END! Just keep workin on, man!:wip:

I'm Waitin for more, :scream:

07 July 2007, 06:39 PM (

Thanks for the support guys.
I lost some work on the dragon when something went screwy and killed a couple of files. Oh well, that's life in the pixel mines. Finalloy caught up agagin after finishing Harry Potter ;)

This is John. The design is by Bobby Roe, me newest (and only) team member (so far).

I resculpted Amys head to take advantage of all the blendshapes already done. I'm not happy with the lips yet but everything else is OK. Every time I try to improve the lips it gets too girly.

Any thoughts and suggestions on fixing that part welcome.

07 July 2007, 06:56 PM
the huge eyes are making it too girly.. if you shrink them it will look more manly and give it more of a brow ridge.

later attempt succesful.

08 August 2007, 04:45 PM
I just indicate that we hear no sound on the flv.

Thank you and keep going

08 August 2007, 05:25 PM
yes there is no audio. hmmm
trying to fix it.
if i don't get it soon, ill try again in a month (i will be travelling and don't know if i'll be able to upload from peru)

good luck to all

well, its a playblast of shots 1Thru 8 with sound.
camera thoughts welcome.

also, any thoughts on how to improve the compression. ?
i am exporting from premiere Pro 1.5 at 320 x 240, 69% quality. using Riva to translate to .FLV and still ending up with files that are 1.1 Mgs.
the quality is so low that i doubt anyonw will want to watch it.
so all suggestions are eagerly awaited.

Software: Maya

here's shots 1 though 11 of scene 2.
i ve been bogged down with the creation of the painting creatures.
they are all somewhat ready to go now, in an unfinished sort of way.

we'll see how much i get done by the fifteenth.

the compression is wrong in mho (looks like wideoforwindows sort of - square pixels). try cinepac codec no compression. in riva set bitrate to 320 and compare both. cheerz!

11 November 2007, 02:40 AM
put some wips show your work, let somebody know.

11 November 2007, 01:59 PM (

Thanks for the compression advice Jana.
Even more, thanks for the interest.
It looks like I might finish at an animatic level with playblasts, no renders. I did about a thousand frames yesterday, i have about two thousand to go, so its about 50/50 whether or not I make it. Still according to the clock i have 1 day 16 hours and thirteen minutes to go.

and, this image is the girl in the painting with the dragon. the original drawing was one of my first submissions.

no more updates after this, just the final, if i finifh....

notice improved compression thanks to Janas advice

Here is my final crapmation.
thanks to cg talk for a fun ride and to Mibus for the tech assists.

enjoy hte first few rendered scenes, get the idea from the playblasts.
tolerate the fact that i didn't even notice thte heads up display always on until the final .flv conversion.

it was fun. im proud of two things
1) i finished (thanks to the extension) even itf it is total capmation, at least its there and done and in..
2) i like my camera angles, not a single shot is the defalut 35 mm lense- i did use the 35, but never unquestioningly, outsiede i used a 15, a 35, and 55, inside i used a 24 mm, a 35mm and 55. i really got sense of what the lenses give, how to include the paintings as characters with the wide angles, how to fine tune intimacy with the 55. in all that was the best part for me. cheers all

these are the other take aways...

lesson 1 , next time i need a team
lesson 2, next time, fewer characters
lesson 3 crapmation is better than no-mation

ummmm, oh yeah, can we have another extension please? This time bout six months, i think thats what i need to actually animate this beast.

Great work even without a team. But a team really helps. Me and some colleagues had a go on the last EON challenge but it was hard even with four :-)
I think that even with the crappy look the feeling got through! Good luck now.

12 December 2007, 05:28 AM
This is a very ambitious piece. and the fact that you've completed it as a story is all that matters. congratulations! this is a lot of work! good luck...
