I'm thinking on a night scene. I went back to my childhood to bring the inspiration for this - the guardian angel guiding the kid to a safe place...

06-28-2007, 04:28 AM (

Going a little further and doing some detailing...

06-28-2007, 10:40 PM
Hi Udilson,I am very curious to see how you're idea is going to evolve!I have answered your question ,hopefully as you expected.I will visit your post often!good luck!

07-02-2007, 05:44 AM (

Just another try. Making the angel a little anger and the man, well, dead.

07-04-2007, 08:46 PM
Hi Luiz,

The composition drags my attention to your threat, I like the idea of the angel and the kid, but I just don’t see the kid. I like the concept of the souls coming out of the head as hair, gives a nice atmosphere, to the mystic world, the only part I still don’t understand yet it’s the main idea, for the behavior.

keep it coming so far it looks interesting.. and with great potential

07-05-2007, 08:45 PM
Your questions are very welcome and I will be trying to address them in my next sketch. For now, I could say that I already made some choices and based on those choices I decide not to use a kid figure; instead I will work with a grown up. THE IDEA - I still working on my little store, but the main idea is a guardian angel attacking his protégé instead of saving him from falling off the cliff. Did I mention the guy is a sleepwalker?
Well, those are the words; I hope be capable of translate them into a good image and for that, I am counting with your pertinent questions.
See you and good luck to all of us.

07-05-2007, 10:21 PM
I like the story of the concept definitely, the grown up man it’s a good idea since we expect sometimes more things from a child, and not so much for a man, I also like the idea of the protégée and the angel, since you just don’t expect the attack from him, it looks a bit dark and I like it!

Hope to see more soon!

07-13-2007, 05:14 AM (

I found this image online and it's exactly the one my parents put in my room long time ago. This is where I went for inspiration.

07-13-2007, 05:22 AM (

I think I am almost there, almost happy with the composition. Please, let me know your opinion. Your ideas are more than welcome.

07-15-2007, 07:15 AM
Hi Uldison,
I remember that image,. Since the beginning of your idea in the thread it pops out that image to me, it was kind of creepy for me when I was a child though haha…Maybe that inspires you to?

About your composition looks more dynamic the special effects you are adding but maybe needs more perspective have you try to give it in 3 point perspective so it’s a bit more like watching it from the “Heaven or Hell” the behavior..? Or since you’re taking the idea of angels your also could try, doing the illustration like if was part of a mural or window in a church. And that might also add the strange behavior. I will keep an eye in what you are going for, but I love the concept and where you want to take it!

07-17-2007, 03:29 AM
Hello Axel,
I just love the church mural idea, but it’s to far from what I had “planed”.
I’ve been working in a different camera angle for the composition and I hope I’ll be posting it soon. I am pushing the camera closer, trying to incorporate your idea of a better perspective, and adding some background. What I am looking for it’s an almost claustrophobic feeling, with the figures jumping from the canvas. Because my theme has that mystical thing going on I am looking a lot to the baroque period (profane and sacred, more profane, that’s for sure), more precisely to Caravaggio, my personal god Caravaggio. I want my painting to be that ‘fleshy‘, better yet, carnal, and my angels as material as I can make them in contrast with the ghostly demons on the left side. Well enough with the words. See you...

07-17-2007, 07:13 PM
Hi Uldison,

Well I am glad to hear you like it, and juist as an inspiration point, could be of use, I love the flesh concept idea, I think that will sell better your characters, and the contrast to the spiritual world will look fantastic!...:scream:
hopeing to see more updates! and have fun :wavey:

07-21-2007, 06:39 PM (

This is an another attempt... Let me know what you guys think about it, I am all ears!

07-22-2007, 04:24 AM
very intriguing concept! i'm really waiting to see what's next ... there's a deep feeling in your work ... it invites the viewer to explore more ...

07-22-2007, 10:21 PM
Hi Uldison,
The dark contrast of the light and the dark, emotions in the angel, its coming through very nicely, I think the compositions it’s looking much better for the feeling that it’s giving the idea of a much more mystical flow, adding to the composition as well. I like how it looks the pain, in the souls looking at the human, and the expression on him as well. Hope to see a better look to your characters and the close idea that each might take in the composition, like I said Its coming trough very good all your ideas

07-24-2007, 12:22 AM
Thanks Neville and Axel for the good words, I appreciate your presence and comments.
Neville I am not sure what is next man; I think it is time to start with some color and any change and detailing will come as I progress with the painting. So much work to be done! Zeus help us all.

07-31-2007, 03:49 AM (

Some colors... just could not wait to finish blocking...

07-31-2007, 07:55 AM
I like that sort of baroque sensibility in the poses and characters. You don't see that much anymore, especially in this challenge where most of the entries are faar from realistic (my own included). Such a style will really make your entry unique!

I think you're going too dark with this though. With the exception of the lit characters it's pretty much all a dark blue haze; the terrain and those figures in the center of the right-hand edge especially could stand a little light-level boosting and contrast. It can still be dark, just not so dark that it becomes indeterminable. (especially considering the final image needs to be printable, dark base values can be a dangerous thing.) Also, if you squint your eyes, you'll see that in the three main characters you have this wonderful triangular set-up guiding the gaze of your eye -- And then there's a little ball of light in the left that's just kind of on its own. This can also be helped by brightening the ground a bit; a few lit spots in the rocks could help to unify that one point with the rest of the piece.

Also, regarding the shape of the smoke following the character in the center -- When I first looked at it, I thought it was a guy being eaten by a hippo :\ This has a lot to do, again, with the darkness, but also the general form of it. Just something to think about.

You're off to a good start. Keep at it! :)

08-02-2007, 08:09 AM
Hi Uldison, :wavey: (

So glad to see a color update,:arteest: ( I understand it is still a primary color palette but I agree with Chris, it’s a bit to dark, and that would rather flatten your composition. Maybe try some orange sky remember the one, in the movie in The Return of the King when they are at Mordor , that image pop to my head when I imagine the sky that your were going and add nice contrast to all your mystical blues.

Well hop it helps!,:curious: ( as for the light source you might want to consider some God rays as also some point lights making a better triangle composition witch I think is great, what you have done . Hope it help a little my suggestion , and keep posting so we can help you more, I am sure it will look amazing the style will really stand out from the rest, that’s great!

08-03-2007, 03:58 AM (

Just finish my first layer of color...
and the character from the left side will be back in the next update, possibly.

08-03-2007, 04:20 AM
Hi Chris and Axel,
Thank you for your valuable and pertinent comments, they are always welcome. You guys are completely right, the image it is too dark, indeed.
As you can see, my new update looks a little better and I will continue to bring more light into the piece.
Thanks again guys, and please, let me know what you think of the update.

08-10-2007, 03:42 AM (

Turning on some lights...

08-13-2007, 04:26 AM (

I start to refine the sky and the drapery floating around the angels.

08-23-2007, 04:40 AM (

just a little update...

08-23-2007, 04:47 AM (

08-23-2007, 06:40 AM
Hey Uldison, wow!! i really like your style with a great notes of power like Doré illustrations, really great man !! :applause:
if I can comment out about the composition, I think that the angle of your scene would have to be of down to upwards, and think the angel and the man form a vertical line over the right focal points loading the composition towards to the right. About lighting, i think now is over lighted, perhaps using rays of ligth from "clouds holes", and light from down ( from hell  ) you can balance dark and light areas ( " a la Rembrandt " :D ), only a comment :) Again great work !! and following your progress in your concept

08-29-2007, 03:24 AM (

That is what I am planning for the background. Any comments will be welcome.

Hey Fernando, thanks for your presence. I think you are right, the piece got too bright all of sudden and yes, I am bringing some darkness back. Thanks again and I will be waiting for your critics.

09-02-2007, 02:20 AM
Hi Uldison! sorry I missed so much! but you are doing fantastic!:arteest: realy looking as I imagine! so I guess thats a good thing! haha!:scream:
About the composition I agree with Fernando! But then again the drama of the behavior, will upgrade with better lighting since it is still over lighted, love the color of the skin, maybe needs some greens the pallete to make him look a bit more inhuman flesh.....well I like the Bg, and all that its going on there! but the fabric (angel's tunic)needs a bit more air flow in the texture, hope it helps what I see so far! and a bit less saturation..hmm thats all haha!
I still will love to see that in a big mural!

09-02-2007, 05:13 PM (

Keep painting...
Any comments will be welcome.

09-05-2007, 03:08 AM (

more... detail... Working toward give more sense to the right side of the painting... any comments?

09-05-2007, 03:13 AM
Hey Axel,
thanks for your presence and valuable comments. I am thinking about everything you brought up in your last comment. Thank you again.

09-05-2007, 03:40 AM
Hey Uldison, great details man !! I like a lot your "querubines de la muerte" . Perhaps the angel with the knife need to grab it with the right hand so notices better, only a comment :D Great and awesome work my friend :applause:

09-07-2007, 09:57 PM
Hi Uldison, :)

The “querubins” are looking fantastic! :scream: The expressions really sell well the mood of what’s going on there, I like the lilac skin tones, and the swan’s feathers with those grayish tones, very dramatic as it should I guess? Haha ..about the knife it seem a bit hide in the composition maybe Fernando’s suggestion will help out, and the forearm muscles try give in them a bit more definition so you can see better the strength of their action? So far that’s all! And like I said its looking fantastic, keep working looks great!

09-20-2007, 03:35 AM (

more on the group of angels...
Please, let me know what you think.

09-20-2007, 05:20 AM
Hey Uldison, great work mate!!, i like the expressions you used for the angels! really nice!
Again great work mate! Cheers!

09-20-2007, 05:24 AM
Hi Uldison, I like the development you are giving to the expressions and the colors, but I have a comment about the angel underneath, even though I understand his expression, I think looks still a bit to posed I don’t see a lot of believability in him yet, maybe the hair’s style its not helping that much either, and the teeth are to bright, there’s something in him I think is not right, sorry by not being to accurate, but so far that's my appreciation on him.

Have you try doing the expression of him in the mirror and follow that mood, maybe it will help more to get it right. But as always your work is no less than very unique! And I love your style keep working hard Luiz I am sure you will narrow your composition top notch!

10-09-2007, 01:19 AM (

Hello, still working on the group of querubins.
Axel, I try to fix the second querubin, as you pointed in your last comment, there is something wrong with him. Let me know how things are looking now.
Thanks Axel and Fernando for your support, I appreciate.

10-09-2007, 02:48 AM
Hi Uldison, I am so impressed how many characters you got! Good work! The expressions look much more believable, the wings, are looking fantastic I like them , although maybe some feathers are looking to much together, especially the wing above in your last post in the right corner, maybe spread them just a bit, I also noticed something strange in the angel in the back (donw left), his right leg looks to close to the torso and the oblique muscle doesn’t follow the hips, maybe just move back a bit his right leg so it will match better the hip. :) Its going to be great you piece of art! Keep working hard Uldison!

10-09-2007, 06:47 AM
Hey Uldison, great to see you here again my friend !!
Really great expression for the querubins and the rope will be an impressive and great touch !! You are transmiting a powerful feeling with your painting, great my friend!!

Again, great work Uldison! Cheers!

P.S I agree with Axel about the leg of the back querubin

10-09-2007, 09:51 PM
this is very interesting! love the purple shade a lot! i think in order to bring out your characters even more .. you need to strengthen your highlights and shadows .. that way, details will automatically show up ;)
looking forward to next post! :p cheers my friend!

10-10-2007, 07:36 AM
That's a very unusual idea...
Makes you think of concepts of good and bad...
Very nice work! Looked through your thread - interesting to watch development and growth of it.
Nice painting! Looking forward for more!

10-13-2007, 02:02 AM (

And that is it for this part of the painting, at least for now...

10-13-2007, 02:17 AM
Hello guys,
Thanks for your support, I appreciate it.

Axel, I tried fix the wing thing you pointed, but if I will have time I will be back to then latter. And the leg problem was just because I was planning to put a new angel in front of it, as you can see in my last post.

Neville, I understand what you are saying but I’m not sure if I want then to be too sharp. I think I would try keep then more soft and into the shadows. Anyway, I might have to change it later…

Fernando, thank you for your kind words and again, the angel’s leg it’s fixed. Thanks my friend.

Alexandra, thank you and I am glad you enjoy the process.

Guys, please keep the comments coming, they, as you all know, are very important.

10-13-2007, 04:52 AM
Hey Uldison, i really like that group of querubins, awesome my friend !! and the bottom forward querubin pose its really cool and dynamic ! Perhaps a more bright eyes on the all querubins of the group (specially on the two at top and on the one at bottom), only a comment:) . Again, awesome work and concept!! Cheers my friend !

10-13-2007, 02:47 PM
it's a very dramatic scene you're developing!and complex too with all this querubins,so much work!Neville is right it makes you wanna to see more!

10-14-2007, 12:52 PM
Hi Uldison! Love the new character! I see now what you meant for the previous composition! I really love the flow in all the poses for them! Its very mystical and the mood its no lees than that! For same reason, the hands are so expressive in them! And the colors are showing a better hue for the composition! I know you still got a lot in your shoulder but its looking fantastic Luiz (hope you don’t mind if some time s call you like that) ! Great, Great, Progress!

10-15-2007, 03:52 AM (

keeping adding details, this time to demons on the left side. I still not sure on how finish them...

10-15-2007, 08:18 AM
Hi Uldison!:wavey: (
Wow! Love the guy in the front and his flesh its so exquisite all that shading, ( and the pose fantastic body language! My friend I love the other guys behind, and the expression of agony on them! I will suggest to add some for shadowing of flesh and shadows in warm colors, some yellows will be a great start hue in contrast for all that other lilac tones from the angels, and also the ground will be great to see a bit more deep than what it seems now, like a hole under neat them, but like I said only suggestions and conceptual ideas that I think might work in your favour for that great spectral and mystic look you are getting so nicely:applause:

10-16-2007, 02:51 AM (

How far is too far?!!!
Please, could you guys help me answer this damn question?

10-16-2007, 11:25 AM
Hi Luiz! haha! yay ! I can do that! Love the wings! they look nice and unique add so much more to your composition and the touch of fadeing to something else, evil and dark ! haha! love the yellows, please keep working hard I soo want to see this finish its comeing so nice and pretty !:applause:

10-17-2007, 03:16 AM (

Doug, thanks very much. The drama probably comes from my years on drama scholl.

Fernando, my friend, thank you for your support. I will be checking the angels eyes for sure.

10-17-2007, 11:38 PM
Hey Uldison, I love that part of your concept, great poses, a really power touch!!. The fire wings its cool touch on the first demon !! And the souls on pain.... wooow great great !! A totally dramatic and beautiful scene! !! Again, great work my friend, Cheers!!

(And agree with Axel, you need to put all the gas on this, white flag!! is the last lap!! go, go , go Uldison!!!:D and bring to home that great concept!! )

10-19-2007, 05:04 AM (

I did some work on the drapery and the rock and I'm going for the main figures now...
still without the fire reflexions...

10-22-2007, 06:18 PM (

I start refining the guardian angel and that is it for now...

Fernando, my friend, thank you for your support.

10-22-2007, 06:25 PM
Interesting piece. I like the scene, the poses and color you are using :9 And the wings are awesome! Good Luck!

10-23-2007, 12:11 PM
Hi Uldison sorry my friend! been a bit close to colors and eye drops way to much! I like how the skin its looking for the main Angel very "eteric" I dont know if thats the right term haha:scream: ! I think once the reflections are there the skin will come a bit more alive that it will play a bit more with the envioramnet....but its great to see the whole thing ! Looking Great ! and like every one its mentioning Run!:bounce: or jump but might be hard to paint in the computer like that haha:D .....

10-24-2007, 04:20 AM (

The angel with hair and the bouquet of lilies...

10-24-2007, 04:22 AM (

and here is the sleepwalker partially done.

10-24-2007, 04:28 AM
Hey Axel, I was missing you, actually. Glad you are back. Thank you again, for your kind comments and I am trying jump and paint as you sugested, still some much to be done. Thanks my friend.

Nemesix, thank you and good luck to us all.

10-24-2007, 09:24 AM
Hey Uldison, ............ simply beautiful my friend!! wooowww ... I really love your concept, like I say before your concept has all of the power of the Doré images ( Doré would be proud :) ) and cant wait to see finished this awesome painting !
(About skin colours, perhaps a red tones from bottom, from the hell fire:twisted: ) .... and run my friend like Felipiño Massa :D , last lap!!! the checkered flag is really close !!

10-24-2007, 01:31 PM
This is coming along really nicely. Thise skintones and lighting on the pale guys is really fantastic! I do agree with Ferx, though, about the lighting from hell. There's fire down there, but it's very muddy and desaurated, and so is not reading quite as fire. Brightining that up along with the light it casts would help... or you could remove all but a few licks of flame and instead use a mich brighter, redder light-source but from off-screen, coming from below... but that would look really cool! (if there's time... there's not much!) Good luck...!

10-25-2007, 05:42 PM
Great job!very nice painting UldFerr! After reading what Michael Dashow just wrote,I don't think there could be any other sugestion to improve it even more!best wishes!

10-26-2007, 06:45 AM (

Well, I am almost there, or at least I am where the time aloud me to be. I really appreciate all the friendly comments and suggestions. I turn off the fire wings and add a red cast coming from the left side, as Michael suggested. The light I was already working on it, but I could not make the fire work, was too busy and messy. Please, let me know you what you guys think so far, I still have some time to try fix things. Thanks again everybody. Good Luck to all.

10-27-2007, 03:24 PM
HI Uldison sorry for been away! to much eye drop and all that! well Looks Fantastic all the skin tones blend so pretty on the history, its a good call to take of the fire wings, and the light looks great from hell maybe still needs a bit more warm hues in the fabric as well to guive a better source of light , other that that, the faces are really special!

Looking Fantastic , so just one push more and you are done!

10-28-2007, 03:57 AM (

Hey Uldison, ........... impresive........... most impresive........ what a superb concept my friend!! For the first time when I saw your sketches and concept I feel the powerful of your idea, love your concept " a la Doré" The atmosphere of the whole image is awesome, incredible touch with the parents on the background searching for their son, uhhh really cool. The contrast between the cold purple of the querubins and the warm red of the souls of hell puts and incredible enviorement and tension in the image, great!!

Uldison my friend I only can say awesome !! and congratulations for this superb art work! Best of luck ..... and now is time ...... yeeeessss..... for a bunch of caipirinhas and many shots of tequila!! Cheers my friend!!

11-02-2007, 02:21 AM (

Well, I am back to work. There is many things I am not happy with, so let's do it. This time I did some work on the fabric drapery and add some fog/smoke. Please guys comments are welcome.

11-03-2007, 04:42 AM
the colours are simply brilliant! :D love the new light treatment! im very very curious about the story  and obviously .. the final image :D wishing the very best bro! god bless ya!

11-07-2007, 11:20 AM
Hi Luiz,
I like the new fabric a lot! :D
And since you have more time I am sure the light and texture will be more detailed as I am sure you like it to be! So just keep in mind what is the fabric you are working with and the take your time to add more hues and smoke fx to it! As if it could blend in the light and disintegrate in the dark...hope I explain my self!

I am sorry I'd been away lots of things happening lately! But I am back!:)

11-10-2007, 08:12 PM (

Here goes my last update before the final image, I hope...
The big changes are the fabric floating around the angels, the face of the left bottom angel and the sleepwalker. There is a little work on the wings of the guardian angel and on his feet. Plus, here and there minors touch ups.

Thank you Axel and Neville for your words.
