I don't have scanner nor camera, so it's just webcam quality. sorry for that.

I see that it will be polish challenge for the first time :) second day, and more and more of us :) w kupie sila mosci panowie jak mawial zagloba, kupy nikt nie ruszy :)

I see a kitty being deadly scaired when seeing a mouse. Nice idea, but what about your work? I understand that your still will be like 5th picture (first in the second row) ? or you want to have comic book style? As animation is concerned here we don't animate (a kitty for example), only light change with some comera flythrough... but of course if you animate this kitty and mouse good for you! hope you'll manage to do so!

good luck
I'll be watching you

06-26-2007, 07:52 AM
I read in the rules:
"Character animation is the primary criteria for the Master and Excellence awards in this category."
so I'll try to animate the cat at least a little bit.
If I can't do it, it'll be the scene of pictuer 5 with some camera move.
But as I don't plan to make realistic shading, rather a shading similar to my chameleon, I hope that I'll have enough time to try around with the animation.

06-26-2007, 07:59 AM
to zdanie wyrwane z kontekstu regulaminu ;)

In this category we don't animate characters (unless you're good at it and will manage to do it in time). It Animated Short category it's the main focus. Here it only means that we have to create characters, express emotions, so they have to be in move, dynamic pose (which makes a possibility thta it's animated).

If we were to animate a character and create a scene for that and render it, taking under concideration that we're working alone in this category... not too many would do it on time... in a last challange not too many managed to do a simple animation of camera move or light change...

But still, I hope you'll manage to do it, I also will try to animate ma characters, but rather in static poses, so only some slight hand and head movements... but I doubt if I manage to do it.

06-26-2007, 08:49 AM
hehe, just read some more about it, later in FAQ section they clarify that our category here is to let people do their own animations (not based on a screen play delivered), and on the other hand to let 3d people to enter open categories like model, texture. So competition here will rather force doing an animation if we want to be noticed :)
good luck!

06-26-2007, 08:52 AM
heh...i like this idea...i'll watch this one...

06-26-2007, 09:14 AM
best of luck :) Kitties are always good :D

06-26-2007, 11:01 AM (

I will try to make the scene in this style, however on the sphere the texture is rather random, I will put more love into the textures on the real models.

Next update is to come not before July because I have exams now.

06-26-2007, 11:05 AM
I like the ideea with this shader very nice!

06-26-2007, 11:16 AM
I recall your Chameleon :) I know you will do it in a top quality! I'm wondering how it will work in the animation... do you plan to animate the texture? to make an impression taht each frame was drawn separately?

06-26-2007, 11:20 AM
I went on your gallery and I'm quiet impressed !
You create top quality pictures !
I am a fan of the fiat 126 and the snail that I have already seen but the chameleon, as Arturo said, is amazing ! The hand painting work is so great !
So, I will follow your thread, I think I will learn some cool things !

06-26-2007, 12:03 PM
hey !
cool concept, and like Gilles said your gallery is impressive. if this will look something like the Chameleon, wooww it will be just great.
... any way good luck, and good luck with the exams , too !

06-26-2007, 03:58 PM
oh cool - my fav work of yours is that cameleon with the penned texture - that's a real cool look!

06-26-2007, 04:24 PM
Oh, I like that texturing test, way cool!
Some wonderful stuff in your portfolio - looking forward to follow your work here :)

06-26-2007, 04:32 PM
Thanks !

Arturro - I don't plan to animate the texture, because it would be too much work. Also I think it could be disturbing for the eye when not only the characters but also the texture moves.
I'm not completely sure yet how it will look with animation, but at least the shader interacts with light (there are two textures now, the blue one for shadow and the yellow one for light)

06-29-2007, 04:44 PM (

started modelling the cat
ooh and my references are sooo cute, I fell in love

morning :)

i love you modeling, like a perfect one :)

By the way, just spotted at your portfolio, it's awesome, congrats!

07-04-2007, 12:41 PM

Nice modelling! I like the mouse... the mouse isnt gonna hurt the cat is it?

I'll check back again for updates on your progress! :)

07-05-2007, 06:28 PM (

started drawing the cat texture
the grey background is just temporary.
done in zbrush (just texture, I didn't sculpt)

Insomnian - no the mouse is a harmless creature.

07-06-2007, 10:34 AM
Hi Anna!

Really loving your style and the way youre going to texture your idea! Also nice to see quite a few other females in the challenge this time round!

Good luck and i'll definately be following your work! -Selina

Thatīs nice shading, keep it up:thumbsup:

07-06-2007, 09:28 PM
Hey, this is really nice you're making good progress. I like the style you've got, it matches the concept with the sphere pretty closely and that's very cool

07-06-2007, 09:44 PM
looking good Ania! This default pose makes it look painful LOL

07-06-2007, 11:33 PM
Hi I really like the way you are going to shade the image/animation it really gives it a diferent style and feel.

Great work so far, Iīm really interested to se the animation on this.

LOL! This cat is so funny! I love it!

07-22-2007, 08:49 AM

I'm trying to animate it.
it's my first animation, so I have some problems. especially there's some jump inbetween and I don't know why. I hope the next one is better.

07-22-2007, 03:24 PM
hey ania

having problems to download your animtest. Why youīre not using CG Challenge Uploader to upload as FLV files? Nice concept and progress so far! Good luck.

07-22-2007, 03:40 PM
same here... i wants to sees somes animations!! :scream:

07-22-2007, 03:41 PM
yes I just noticed, my webpage is down
now I'll try to find out how to make a flv file

07-22-2007, 04:07 PM
yes I just noticed, my webpage is down

now I'll try to find out how to make a flv file

itīs easy as 1,2,3 :) I did use Riva FLV encoder last challenge without a single problem with uploading.

07-22-2007, 05:20 PM
Nice! The texturing work just as well when animated - this will become a killer entry

07-22-2007, 06:11 PM
yeah i noticed there was a pop, and on the way down, the cat seems a bit floaty... gotta go back in there and tweak those splines...

07-22-2007, 08:59 PM (

Software: Blender

ok another try
I remade it meanwhile, although it's still not right
I don't know why there's the Eon logo over it, in the uploader it said strange behaviour.

wah. you can upload vids in the CG server for this contest? and here i was having to go to youtube... :wise:

the fall looks better than the first one... i'd fix the tail a bit, but since this is just a test(?) then it looks good...

07-22-2007, 09:45 PM
yes you can :)
I used the super decoder because riva didn't work for me

yes I'll fix the tail, I have to make a spline there instead of bones
also I must work much on the timing, doesn't look right now
not exactly a test, rather a first try, probably I keep this and just refine it a lot.

07-23-2007, 12:11 PM
Nice work Ania, i like the render.

Bonne chance pour la suite :D

07-27-2007, 07:22 AM
Hey Anna ,

Your style is amazing ! Very unique style of texturing , really cool.
Also the jump of the cat made me do a big awww! :)

Can't wait for more ,

Hey congratulations, i loved your cat! good modeling!:applause:

07-29-2007, 07:20 PM (

Thanks for your comments.

I started animating the mouse.
It's supposed to frighten the cat.
Still some refining needed.

Please tell me about mistakes I make. It's my first animation, so I need much advice.

07-30-2007, 04:46 PM
hey ania, funny project, love to follow it,

your texture thingy is a great :)

hmm, about the frightning mouse, the overall movement is very smooth, but its hard for me to read what you want show.. is the mouse supposed to slowly go down and the suddenly jump up to scare the cat ? or beeing scared by the cat?

i am not that kind of experienced animator, but maybe i could tell you what i'd like to see then ..

07-30-2007, 06:00 PM
it should slowly go down and then suddenly jump to scare the cat

07-30-2007, 06:39 PM
ah! i had the right feeling.. :) .. i think there millions of ways to do this and your poses look right to me. prolly snappy, cartoony motion is the right type of style for your great characters, as you did with the cat:

so i'd tighten the timing

try to led it go down and up in very few frames, 2-5 for example. the going down is to slow and the up to fast. put in a hold, when it first comes down,.. let her snarl or something, but not to much action at a time, the movement of the ears is also great. then suddenly pop it up again andshake its head and hands very fast,...

you will get more and more feeling of what your character will act and behave as you move on with animation, and get a better feeling of how fast and slow something has to bee. and what i always do is search a lot of reference movies, and act it out like a weirdo in my room ;)

keep up the hard work, you'll get it! looking forward to your next animations :)

07-30-2007, 11:51 PM
mmm the anticipation seems a bit too linear for me... the right leg lifting up slowly along with the upper body and right arm all at the same time doesn't seem to work so well... maybe you could try a motion from the bottom up... meaning, hmm how do i explain... you know how cats stalk their prey(?) they sit quietly, and you can see subtle movements from the lower body adjusting their hind legs and then their upper body and fore legs, and then bam! never know what hit em'... this way there's distribution from different parts of the body separately... you can use the added movement to the ears and tail you have along with it... lol i use a cat as an example for a rat animation... :D

08-14-2007, 01:40 PM (

I continued with the surrounding. This is the tree onto which the cat will escape.
I'm not sure yet what to put into the background, any ideas? ( (

08-16-2007, 06:29 PM

for the cat jump animation, you're missing an anticipation pose before the jump. Before the jump it should move down, bent knees.. then lift off

hope it helps

08-17-2007, 03:49 PM (

Software: Blender

Versiden - I'll try to do it, thanks.

I put all together for the first time.
still many things to change.
please give me some advice.
It's very low quality now because I wanted a short render time.

Play Video >> (

08-17-2007, 05:37 PM
lol very funny idea... nice animation.. but if I may give my critiques, I would cay the camera angles and camera animation is distracting the actual action. I would suggest you to minimize the camera movement and put more focused on story telling and layout composition. If u suddenly flip the direction of the camera within a sequence then it will look a bit odd and in ur animation u only seem to have one sequence right now... (its not a rule of thumb but it is concidered to keep the camera angle squential in trems of movent, and in fast action u can cut to very wide renge of camera action) so be careful with camera movement.

You keep up ur good works... c ya around mate:thumbsup:

08-19-2007, 09:57 AM
Hehe Good work Anna..You going good animation.Very Funny..

08-19-2007, 07:53 PM (

Software: Blender

thanks for the comments
I tried to change the camera movement, now it moves much less.
I'm not sure if I cut too often.
Now I'll try to improve each of the cuts.
now I see that I forgot to paste the sequence when the mouse looks up the tree, but animation of that part didn't change since the last time.

The movements of the cat are really well-studied and good!
Keep up the good work!

still many things to fix
comments are welcome (

09-15-2007, 09:21 PM
Wow! The animation is growing really well... it literally made me laugh out loud

Congratulations on some awesome blendering too

09-15-2007, 10:07 PM
I agree with DaddyMack, it really comes out really good! Will be here to see how it will go with the textures and environment! Liked your very fine level of cartoonizing the cat!

09-24-2007, 10:44 PM
Nice stuff Anna! Agree with the others! Makes me laugh too! Sometimes i feel the camera is too "movey". Less floating could help. Especially when you see from cat's eye. But it's gonna be awesome. Just keep tweaking! Congrats for this progress!

09-25-2007, 10:48 PM
really cool job....has potential...very strange behavior!...keep going!

09-26-2007, 09:35 PM
Great job on the characters and the anim so far. I love the shot of the cat trembleing in the tree, fantastic.

10-01-2007, 08:33 AM (

Software: Blender

As I won't have any time for this in October, I declare it as finished now.

It's the story about a cat, who is hunting a mouse. The mouse turns out to be braver than the cat, and in the end the cat is the hunted one.

I'm aware that there are still a lot of errors there, especially the sky, and objects intersecting each other. However it was my first 3d animation ever, and my first project in Blender, so I'm happy with the result. I learned a lot, and that's the most important thing for me.

to the Blender community, without whom I would never be able to learn that program so fast
to the people who gave me advices and pointed me the right way with the animation, who helped me out with reference material and who gave me critics.
to Circus Marcus who allowed me to use his music
and to Tom who was patient when I animated mouse instead of taking care of him.

10-01-2007, 08:45 AM
Does the Video work for you? For me it seems jumpy and the sound is strange, but it was alright when I played the .flv on my computer.
Did I do something wrong with the upload? I used the challengeuploader.jar

I'm adding a link to a .mov version. Quality is about the same, it's just for the case the above animation doesn't work.

10-01-2007, 09:30 AM
Congratulations on your finished work ania !! Very nice animation, i really like the look.
Models and shading fit together perfectly.

10-01-2007, 11:44 AM
Hey Anna, nice movie! I liked a lot your movie, especially mood, achieved by tender colours and black/white freehand texturing (be it intentional, or not :) ).
And animation is very good, nice movements and micro-movements. Especially I am proud because it done in Blender :).
Crtits: some samll technical issues - the ears of cat are not smoothed, and there is some z-battle in the floor mesh shadows (The blender problem which is probably caused because you didnt subsurfed some polygons - i have often these issues too (grr..) )
Best luck!

10-01-2007, 01:44 PM
Wow!!! I really loved the animation. I was instantly attracted on the first shot, lovely use of texture and warm light. You managed to capture a graphic feel as if it were done by hand (traditional media) but with that controlled sense of 3D. This is great work. As you stated, there are some errors, but those can always be ironed out later. On a whole the piece comes across solidly. I hope you enjoy refining this to the point you want it... it's really worth the time. Congrats on this great submit ania. :buttrock:

10-02-2007, 01:57 AM
like the art style on this. cool etching or scribble effect to it. has a lot of personality.

10-02-2007, 03:09 AM
oh...this is the coolest style that iīve seen on this challenge...and worked with blender!...very nice job!

a is the workflow with blender? easy or hard?....cause i donīt know very well the software!:)

10-03-2007, 11:50 AM
Thanks for your answers.

Hiun - I will not refine this further, because I won't have time till the contest's deadline because of exams. But I'm already planning a next animation where I will not make the same errors again.

Npantic - thanks for the tip with subsurfing the floor, I was wondering why there are those problems.

Melkao - Blender is very confusing at the beginning (I worked in Max before), but after the first shock you learn how to work in it very efficiently, and in my opinion many things are solved better than in Max. User interface is better, once you get used to it. Unwrap is much better, also skinning, and there's a node-based material editor and video editing is possible too. Only big disadvantage that there's no Vray for Blender.
It has a bit different workflow as far as big scenes are concerned, in Max I used X-Refs for that, here it's solved differently and I needed some time to find out.

10-03-2007, 12:19 PM
oh...realy?....i will try out...tell me...where are good tutorials for blender?

10-03-2007, 04:48 PM
Manual and some tutorials:

other links:

there are some tutorials on different private homepages and on smaller blender forums too, often it's the best to search in google if you want something specific.
the blender community is also very helpful, I think they are happy about each new user :)

10-03-2007, 07:24 PM
A final! Great work and good luck now!

10-13-2007, 06:33 AM
Nice job Anna ! I particulary like the render !
Learning Blender at the same time, great challenge ! I am planning to go to Blender too ! A friend of mine gave me great tips to start, so I think I will go on soon !
Great challenege again Anna !

10-27-2007, 08:44 AM
i like your animation and shader
great job

10-27-2007, 10:42 AM
Well done. I like the style of your animation. Sorry for not being with you from the beginning. I think you did a great job rogging and animating your characters. Good job with textures and lighs. Music works well. The only thing that I would tweak if I were you is the cat sound. I know that it is difficult to find it. Try looking at You can find there a lot of free sound effects. There should be a cat too.

10-31-2007, 08:48 PM
hey anna, great animation, you captured the movement of the cat realy good. did you now see my animation too? good luck with your entry.

Good look.

I love your bananas pic.!!

12-22-2007, 07:58 AM
A big applaude! Respect :) . This will give you a morale boost to continue working in animation! Congrats!

12-22-2007, 07:53 PM
Thanks guys!
I did not expect this, wow, I wanted just to learn, I'm surprised and very happy!

And all done in Blender? Are the textures hand drawn? sorry for the late answer, animation is done in Blender, modelling in Wings, textures partly in Zbrush and partly in Painter. Not hand drawn, I used hand-drawn textures in one of my previous works, this time I used my Wacom.

12-22-2007, 11:20 PM
Hey I wish I'd seen this work earlier. I love it. It's wonderful and encouraging to see beautiful artistic pieces like this not only appear at this forum but also recognised by the judges. The sinewy nervous movements of the stalking cat are so beautiful and also funny. Congratulations. I love that sketchy texture too. The whole look of it is delightful and the judges definitely get my vote (haha!!) for granting the art direction award to this one. In an industry where slickness and polish are expected it's heartening and refreshing to see this gem sparkling with its own special kind of sophistication. Bravo!

12-23-2007, 10:49 PM
Congratulations Ania. Style of your animation is unusual and outstanding. Well done.

12-26-2007, 03:22 PM
Congratulation Anna.

Simply is perfect and unique style...

And most important... software used...

imagination canīt buy.

Thanks for share your imagination.

Congratulations Anna!
I love the style, I've seen the picture in your galley some time ago, truely beautiful.
Somehow I missed this one though, great blendermation! :)
