Cheers Matthias! My first thought is some OAP's in a nursing home. I spent a lot of time in one with my own grandparents, and it's right up my street....
No time to do a sketch right now!!! I've got a BIG deadline!!

06 June 2007, 11:33 AM
Just mucking about. I'm a busy boy today and i just did this very very very quick sketch of some mice playing 'dare' with some alley cats...
It could probably do with some tone, but my wife' just made lunch!
06 June 2007, 11:53 AM
Great idea! :applause:
06 June 2007, 11:59 AM

06 June 2007, 12:09 PM
very funny sketch... great idea... the mouse has balls...
06 June 2007, 12:56 PM
Finished my lunch off, and dashed upstairs to stick on some quick colour, before i get on with 'proper' work...
More ideas to come... Old People on roller skates next... Or friendly vikings...
06 June 2007, 01:37 PM
Love the colour :)
What kind of material is the sign, since you can look throug it?
The concept is brilliant though!
06 June 2007, 01:55 PM
DUdDLeBUg... Ahem... shouldn't you be doing something else? :)
06 June 2007, 02:38 PM
Looking good, man! Just saying hi to all the guys i remember from a few challenges back..................here we are again.
Looking forward to it.....good luck.
06 June 2007, 02:51 PM
Love the concept, but I have to say it isn't so much "strange" as it is funny. That is my initial impression of it.
I shall be watching either way though! Good luck bro!
06 June 2007, 04:03 PM
that's really funny! I love the consternation on the cat's faces :)
06 June 2007, 05:12 PM
Great atmosphere, style and humor :) Good luck!
06 June 2007, 05:17 PM
Jonny! Good to see you here- it's great to see the old gang together again! This one should be great- looking forward to seeing your work for this one!
haha awesome - love the little mice in the corner looking at him like - oh no, he's doing it again.
06 June 2007, 06:21 PM
Thats a great concept... good luck and Keep it odd!
06 June 2007, 06:34 PM
hey duddle! great stuff man. like usual. just saying hi and best of luck!
06 June 2007, 06:47 PM
That's great stuff. It's direct and funny as hell. Can't wait to see it come together.
06 June 2007, 07:16 PM
Haha, indeed that mouse got balls.Me like those mice in the corner too.Nice sketch!
06 June 2007, 08:24 PM
Really funny and catchy! keep it up! maybe you can do 2 cars facing each other like: "what the hell?!"
06 June 2007, 08:38 PM
Yes! I was hoping you'd enter, Duddlebug. I like your concept, but the sign the mouse is holding should probably look like a piece of torn paper or something. It'd be a lot more believable that you could see the writing through it that way.
06 June 2007, 08:56 PM
Great start!!! keep this going
06 June 2007, 10:00 PM
great one... really funny idea... plz give the mouse a leather jacket with a some sort of canceld cat icon on the back ;)
06 June 2007, 12:53 AM
Hey I like it, I find it fun:scream:ny.
06 June 2007, 05:10 AM
i can find no words to properly express what i felt when i saw your sketch -other than the intensely annoying ... "LOL" ! :D
06 June 2007, 06:43 AM
Hi Jonny, Itīs good to see you here. Grrrreat start my friend. With so much time to complete the challenge I guess we'll see a lot of stuff from you. Good luck!!!
06 June 2007, 07:20 AM
lol haha great idea...kinda looks like a gladiator going into a stadium for his final battle...except its a mouse..funny
You're 'mucking about' has already made me laugh my arse off.
Can't wait to see more :)
06 June 2007, 01:14 PM
hahaha.. funny idea.
can't wait to see your next step.
good luck in the challenge, btw.
06 June 2007, 07:55 AM
I had liked your concepts and achievements in other challenge,
I will follow this new adventure.
06 June 2007, 10:42 AM
excellent! :D he's either suicidal of the hardest mouse in the universe! brilliant.
(i agree-maybe a couple of confused glances between a couple of the cats)
06 June 2007, 10:52 AM
haha! Like this idea! Good luck Bug!
06 June 2007, 11:04 AM
Blimey! I didn't expect quite so many replies!?
I'm having a busy week (or two) so i just wanted to visualise one of my initial reactions to the brief. And it seemed less time consuming than sketching the old folk on rollerskates taht first came into my head!
Coming back to this colour sketch, i actually quite like it and i think i'll work it up. If i have any more ideas along the way, i'll sketch them too and, who knows, i might have a couple to choose from at the end!
Thanks to everyone who'd responded (and a big 'HiYA!' to all the folk i know and love from previous challenges! it's great to be back in the mix after missing a couple!), and i'm just gonna answer a few queries...
The Cats... (JohnR, Neubius) i think confused glances would work well too! I'm going to extend this canvas upwards into a portrait image, with lots more cats on air conditioning units, drainpipes and a fire escape. So there'll be plenty of room for puzzled cats!
The Sign... (Swizzle, Doffer) My original idea was to have the light from the other side of the mouse, so that any light coming through the piece of paper would help show the text in reverse. I just need to get this right in the final painting. A bit like a lightbox, where the light coming through the paper picks out the text. I think the whole image will be an exercise in effective lighting and characterisation.
I don't think this is going to be 'wacky' enough for a shot at the prizes, but i do think it could be a fun piece and ultimately a strong portfolio piece for me, so i'm gonna keep at it. And on top of that, i like the banter and creative input i get in these challenges. Who knows, i might get the 'genius' idea later and have time to render that up too! :)
And i'm being a bit of a hermit and need to browse around and see what other folk are up to, but i've got a ludicrous amount of work to do before the end of next week, so if i'm a little quiet i'll try and make up for it later on!!
Thanks again for all the positive replies! You've inspired me to get this one painted!!
06 June 2007, 01:44 PM
Made me chuckle. Cheeky little mouse! Brave though. Brilliantly simple and love the moonlit colour palette.
06 June 2007, 09:22 PM
Strange behaviour? It's more like suicidal behaviour, haha... love it.
06 June 2007, 10:29 PM
cool art there mate and very very funny ! :)
06 June 2007, 10:35 PM

c u in the cat and fiddle one day for a pint !
06 June 2007, 09:45 AM
I'm liking this idea/concept alot :D I see it as more of a funny/comecal piece than a strange/odd piece, but nonetheless it's looking great soo far :) The idea for my one is actually inspired from your piece ^^ so I'll mention that in my thread ;) good luck, and I'll be watching your progress :).
06 June 2007, 09:50 AM
Great idea ! Love that concept, very funny, good luck !
06 June 2007, 11:54 AM
or maybe behind the pic is whole army of mices?;)
06 June 2007, 12:07 PM
Great idea, and really nice composition.!!! I just love the little suicidal mouse.
06 June 2007, 01:15 PM

06 June 2007, 08:26 PM

...ok, another super thread to keep an eye on subscribed.
06 June 2007, 08:57 PM
love the composition , it does remind me of the last great act of defiance poster/joke thing though.
06 June 2007, 09:21 PM
haha i love it
06 June 2007, 11:39 PM
Nice sketch and idea! Cool sense of humor, and the scene has a nice suspense. Good luck!
06 June 2007, 02:01 AM
hey dude! welcome to the challenge! :P love the concept at first site! very eyecatching indeed! .. wishing u the very best of luck! :scream:
06 June 2007, 03:46 AM
Way to whip something out JD! Looks like a great concept, and I can't wait to see it progress. I like the idea of going portrait...seems like the composition is already quite good, but taking it portrait and adding more kittens with some dynamic lighting on your bold mouse will be fantastic!
06 June 2007, 05:58 AM
oh man. This is like mine... only so much better.
Damn. I'll have to think of something else.
Can't wait to see yours develop!
edit: the only crit I could offer is the mouse's pose. It looks as if he's sitting, which is certainly wierd, but throws me off a bit. You're probably changing it around anyway, but I'd suggest a more defiant stance.
Everything else is just fantastic: the clutter and numbers of cats, the cowering mice in the corner - great!
06 June 2007, 07:15 AM
what? not finished yet ?
06 June 2007, 07:41 AM
lol what a brave mouse!
06 June 2007, 07:50 AM
rock on... concept looking solid amn.. i lover ur work.. cant wait to see more from u...
06 June 2007, 04:28 PM
Doh....somehow your images won't show up....
Don't know why.
There are a few threads here where the images won't load...strange...
Anyways good luck mate!
06 June 2007, 06:03 PM
Love the concept! Good luck Mr Bug
06 June 2007, 07:36 PM
I see an acerbic sense of humour shines through your work yet again. Great concept Mr. Duddle. Maybe it'd be an idea to have our foolhardy mouse wear a sandwich board draped around his torso, as opposed to a transparant banner..?
Anyway, great concept!
07 July 2007, 04:43 PM
Looking forward to seeing more of this :Ž) Love you work!
Was thinking about the sign the mouse is holding up, had an idea that it would be really funny to see the board lying face up on the floor and the mouse doing a dance to egg the cats on :Ž) Are the other three mice there for support, daring him or trying to stop him from making a life threatening mistake?
07 July 2007, 06:56 PM
OMG John, that is the funniest sketch Ive seen in long time...Im still giggling :D
07 July 2007, 10:25 AM

07 July 2007, 08:06 PM

08 August 2007, 10:29 AM
Back to the surface with your sketch :) Really made me laugh :D
Don't have any suggestions at the moment, Like the lighting and the colder feeling, maybe around the mouse some warmer braver colors could find its ways? :) oops that was a suggestion ;) Anyways great finding you here in page eleven of the forum. Back to the surface were it belongs!
Until next time
