We all learn from each other no matter featured or not. I always like your sytle and the way you express it. Specially at this stage, your designs give me a lot of inspirations.
just watch out your theme here, no matter what you do, make sure it pronounces "behavoir" as much as possible. Good luck buddy.

I doubt it! The thing I like about your textures is that they add interest and value to your concept drawings. Even though they are just idea sketches and not final works, it's really nice to see them so well presented. Whether or not you think it's the best approach in your final work is something I can only guess at this early stage :)

This piece is really building up in an interetsing manner, its almost as if a little story is being written as you introduce each new character, it shows that strong characterisation is at the root of good storytelling.:thumbsup: :thumbsup:

Great start. I'm really glad to see you keeping the unique look of your 2d drawings. Converting a 2D drawing style into 3D is not so easy. It's something I'm personally struggling with at the moment so it's encouraging to see someone managing it so well. I love the way you've done those ears!

I am bit confused how much you seem to love this thread compared to lack of feedback from other folks. Maybe I took it too far from comunity styleI'm also confused why this thread isn't getting a whole lot more attention. But between this thread and your animation one I know you've got some real fans here. As for your style being a bit different, in this challenge I'm seeing a whole lot of beautiful different styles of illustration so I don't think that's a problem, but even if it was too extreme for some, personally I think your style is one of your best strengths. Keep up the cool work! :thumbsup:

Your fashion designer update made me laugh out loud. That skeleton mannequin in the dress is very funny (and disturbingly similar to so many skinny fashion models!)

@ mdavid - thanx buddy! Afterall I am not that confused. You are right, I already have nice group of fans. Speaking about "being a bit different" - I know how wide this challenge is, but I personally see ordinary approach as more atractive for cgtalkers. Of course, your thread is out of this general speach, lol. Itīs first time I am going with this stylisation īcoz I just canīt stay where I was last time, it is natural for me and maybe this often ending in my doubts. So, again thanx for your support. You almost spot my goal with those mannequin btw. It is up to designers, photographers, editors etc. why we have so many skinny girls out there. Well, maybe girls are too crazy to follow such a trends, but humanīs mentality is attacked so hard with this kind of things and it is hard to resist. My goal is to catch some of the sad-disturbing-funny-STRANGE behaviors with a bit of caricature of course ( donīt want to be too moody ). Hope you will enjoy my progress in this.

Wow! I find that new illustration to be very powerful, despite the fact that I'm not sure what the story is. Is that turkey going into the bin? So the cook prepares a meal and then is not able to eat it? What is the story behind this one?

@ handlebar - yeah, clown is madly strange. But what I found very funny related to this image - there is "International Clown Hall of Fame" at the internet :D

@ nwiz25 - great to see you can read stories behind each character. This is going to be another crucial goal for me - to be very clear and stright in storytelling, however stories might be a bit open ended.

@ mdavid - as far as you can feel strangness behind that cookīs image you are right. Basicaly you can just see it as cook who canīt eat her own meal ( ie diet - as Gunnie said ). Maybe that bin is a bit disturbing but I think it works together with plaster on her mouth. Is there anything else what may make it not that clear?

@ Gunnie - thank you sis! It will be great if those personalities drive people discuss about their possible life. As I mentioned already, I want to have this piece not that far from our real world.

I can see so many connections with everyday news by looking back on my images I did for this challenge so far. They all want to make you laugh, but they are pretty sad on the other side. I feel shocked by sad news we all can read on this forum today. I am getting kind of gloomy mood so I decided to have a lil break of developing this entry today. I think I am closer to understand what should be important for us and I hopefuly will never take the place side by side with strange behaviour I am presenting in this thread. :beer:

@ shakes - yeah, alotta work for sure, but I will try to manage very simple yet effective art direction for this illustration/animation entry. You have some good experience with huge character set for one entry so I think you will agree its possible.

Nice start on the modeling Oweron. I personaly think that you could simplify things to keep them more in line with your wonderful drawings, cheek bones, eye sockets etc. just cast distracting shadows that make the model hard to read as a cartoon. You've already done the hard work with your drawings, don't be afraid to emulate them exactly, the strength is in their simplicity, a few simple shapes and textures is all that's needed. I think you're on the right track but you just need to stick closer to your drawings and try to avoid getting too detailed, harder than it sounds i know.

@ handlebar - thank you for your constructive feedback. I absolutely understand what you mean but somehow I feel not very comfortable with idea of translating my sketches to 3D to mimic them exactly. However, I am not going to take all goodies of 3D tools to make it advanced but I want to stay with easy and rough feel of whole show. It was task of decesion to go with 2D or 3D and from my POV I did choose the right one. So afterall no worries buddy I am not afraid, lol :thumbsup: You hopefuly will be nicely surprised at the end of this progress.
BTW - you just want to infect me with your 2D fever you have this challenge, donīt you, ha ha ha :D

Donīt want to call it "ignored" coz it has the value. I will keep it in mind when developing shaders and textures for them. I asked already myself if I am able to make it in 2D for animation entry to keep the style of sketches all the way, but I ended up with one possible way - to have their body parts as separated layers and move them in XY only. I say it may be fun for commercial or music video, but for a kind of short movie animation I better to make it in XYZ ( I say level up ) :thumbsup: Another direction I am thinking about is to have this illustration entry finished as sketchy 2D so I will completly make it in that style. However I do prefer to finish my animation entry and call this as follower.

It's great to see the cast of the block gradually take form in 3D. You're doing a great job at keeping the consistency in your style. I really like those 2D props you use too, like the trophies and wig mannequins. Are those 2D bits going to be part of the finished illustration? Because they do add a lot of value to the scenes

@mdavid - good you point those 2D photo props out. Yes, I want to use them or/and 3D realistic models as well for my finished entry. Main reason is to bring my caricature of everyday strangeness closer to real life as my characters are stylised. Want to keep it somewhere in the middle to stop and think about by a chance. Watching your characters appear in this thread has been a little bit like following the release of a set of toys - it's always fun to see the latest new model released. Once again, this new character looks consistent in style while also noticeably different from the others. I like those lumps growing all over his skin. I'm glad your 2D props are going to stay around to the final too.

Fantastic! It's the small details that contribute so much to the success of this character. For example, the way that hair is cut/shaved at the back of his head is something I find really funny. And those shoes and socks are just perfect.

The scary thing about your 'Block' is how close it is to reality. The scientist is looking really good. Those little glowing bits are an inspired piece of texturing. In the real world he probably advises governments on environmental policy. Keep up the fantastic work buddy. I'm thoroughly enjoying the show

@ cabertevon - Ah, yeah, its hard to be original if you are getting inspirations from real life. Those colors are good looking ones, donīt you think? Overall, donīt worry coz outside scene isnīt going to be visible in my illustration entry. It will take its place in animation category so hopefuly it is not that disturbing. Howdy folks! Here is finished clownīs apartment. Itīs stright MR XSI render, so no postproduction yet. Room could be filled with a lot more objects to emphasize clownīs condition, but what I have now is IMHO enough to feel it. Hope you like it. I want to have all props and scenes finished till the end of this month, so I can focus on characters and final compositing in October. Sounds impossible, but what is important - I love this project! yo!

Whoah! I look away for a little while and when I return there's all sorts of cool stuff to see.

I agree with authentic - the mood of the clown's room is excellent. The rays of light, boarded-up windows and scattering of toys make a scene which is both beautiful and (in my opinion) tinged with sadness. All the details are working well to suggest a story. This is wonderful stuff :thumbsup:

Howdy folks! Here is my lil update. Itīs apartment for Cook The Block character. Well, you might notice progressing is a bit slow around here. I thought this project is going to be heavy, finally I am sure itīs impossible to finish it the way my original idea was. I still want to make final submission for this challenge so here is what I want to do. I am leaving 3 characters ( fashion, glamour, turtledile ) for time after the challenge since I want to continue with "The Block" as my very personal project. I will be happy to submit final in 3D open category as lil flying camera sneakpeek. Also, I want to submit illustration showing a bit less than what I wanted but it could be fun as well. Okay, next week I am going to work on Body's appartment, so updating next weekend. Hope to finish it on time. Cheers,

I can understand why this is too much work to finish in time. But I'm really glad you plan to keep going with it as a personal project. Good luck with the last month before deadline.

The cook's room is amazing and it matches the high standard you've managed in your other work so far. Your use of lighting in a beautiful cinematic way conveys a lot of rich atmosphere and mood. I like it a lot.

cool update oweron. Maybe you can add a little more occlusion or shadow on the ground. I find the dust-bin is flying. On another way, maybe some little reflections could also make it more believable ?

@ mdavid - thank you again for keeping this entry alive! To tell the truth, I was ready to copletly stop this project 'coz I really hate when things are running out of deadline. I already have plans for another personal project. But I did try a quick rig test on one of my characters and found pretty much in it. They are going to be funny and strange when acting for sure so I want to continue to the point I wanted to present originally in here. My gf is another fan of this so its also very strong argument to continue , ha ha. I definitelly will need "Good luck" for this month :thumbsup:

@ authentic - youīre right about flying bin. The thing I am using not advanced lighting and shading setup is because of rendering time. I want to keep it as short as possible but maybe just occlusion on the floor will keep it in limit. Thanx for crit anyway.

Man, i can't believe how much work you've put in this already... I gotta say I've been watching your progress, and I really admire your style. you are an excellent collage artist, and the distortions your work brings into perspective, texture and lighting are it's most delightful feature. I hope you'll have the time to animate this as you want, I'd love to see how those guys will move. good luck!

Fantastic. Perhaps the steam coming off the food could be more brightly lit or thicker over the food, but then I also want to say that the steam effect looks amazing! Your characters are funny and beautifully done, but there is also sadness in them - that makes for quite a poetic image

hey mark :thumbsup: That steam isnīt big deal really. It is there just for lil effect and probably not going to be in final composition (at least not in that way). Just quick composition of several smokes and unfortunatelly its brightness depends strongly on lcd/crt gamma shiness. Its pretty strong on second crt I have here for example. howdy folks!

here is my finished strange behavior illustration entry called "The Block". Idea behind is kind of simple. Generally, my goal was to capture strange behavior you may find allaround in real life. And since the enviroment of "blocks" is very familiar to me, I did choose such a form of presentation. Of course, the style of my image is not stright realistic what is just natural for me. I am using a mixture of realistic elements with caricature to catch the mood of parody (comedy) instead. However, as few people already said, there is a bit of sedness in it as well.
In depth, I started this project as animation short wannabe. Block of apartments full of residents with strange behaving on their daily routine poped up as nice base for more than one short. Well, its also pretty huge project so I finished just this promo part of it. Characters are developed as human caricatures all besed on one universal mesh for man and one for woman. As already mentioned, inspiration for their characterisation is not out of this world. Itīs just in your newspaper or TV box everyday. My main apps I did use to create this show are Softimage XSI 5.11 Foundation, BodyPaint R3 and AfterEffects 6.5 Standard. All rendered with MentalRay.
This image definitely is not very thumbnail friendly and I am afraid limited 150k upload canīt give you important "walk around" comfort. I already uploaded closeups and you can download 1/2 full resolution from here:

ow yeah, this challenge really kicked my ass. I am getting old or something, but I feel tired as never before. What is much important, I get also great lesson out of this challenge, learned amount of new production things and all challengeīs goodies!

Hey Juraj, this is simply awesome my friend!! I really love your wonderful style. The individual strange behaviors for the persons on the block are captured in an incredible way. The atmosphere and textures are superb! I really love the sad and depressed clown. That image is really amazing!

Ahhh - this turned out just fantastic.... and it's been a real treat to follow your work both here and in the animation section. I agree that you have plenty here to continue work with - a series of shorts, one for each character, would be awesome.

Great piece man. I've mentioned what I think about your work before, and this time I just want to emphasize it once more. It was a pleasure to watch your progress, and learn how you combine different techniques with skill, hard-wrok, professionalism and spirit. It's just such a different mood that this illustration emits. Authenticity may be a myth itself, but if there is such a thing, this image gets really really close to it. I'm really glad you got this final image across the finish. It's an amazing illustration that definitely rewards close inspection. When you focus down into each part of the scene there is just so much mood and atmosphere and poetry to be found that it's a bit difficult to sum it up with one comment. I'm amazed at the level of detail too: the chipped edges of the cutaway concrete wall, those pigeons on the ledge and all that amazing texturing - a real feast for the eyes, and consistently rich in detail right across the canvas.

Congratulation on making this illustration happen. It's a wonderful piece of work. Oh and that was really nice of you to give me special mention in your comments too! Thanks for that. :)
