Latest Update: Modeling: detailing for the displacement
06 June 2007, 05:09 PM
looks like they made less difference between 2d and 3d work. I'll guess i post my high res rendering - if i got one - in the illustration department.
good luck to all
06 June 2007, 05:52 PM
hey Nico !
good to see you in this challenge !
good luck mate !
06 June 2007, 06:21 PM
Cool you're here Nico. can't wait to see first rough :bounce:
Have fun and good luck for this one.
06 June 2007, 06:34 PM
Hey Andrei, hey Cyril,
great to see you up here.
i really hope i'll finish this one.
tonight i'll do some brainstorming, and maybe i'll have something like a sketch tomorrow.
06 June 2007, 06:37 PM
Ya ! Nico !
06 June 2007, 06:54 PM
Yay , Nico !
Great to share this new one with you !
Have tons of fun and wish you all the best luck !
06 June 2007, 06:56 PM
Great Nico! Good to see you here and looking forward to what you come up with :)
06 June 2007, 07:09 PM
yopla nico :)
great to see u here !!
good luck :)
cya later my friend
06 June 2007, 07:25 PM
Awesome! This is going to be a great ride, Glad to see you strapped in mate:D
06 June 2007, 10:09 PM
so great to see all familiar avatars and such :buttrock: :applause:
let's make this ride a great one
and with laughter
06 June 2007, 11:44 PM
i just thought of an old idea i once had and i'll use it cause it is perfect for this challenge.
a simple titel : AMISH GANGSTERS !!!
the still will be a group of amish gangsters posing before their tuned ride (not sure about the translation, but it's that thing that is being pulled by horses ).
The Amish gansters will be inspired by some notourious rappers like BIG, tupac, public enemy and many more. I'll do some research soon.
I'm not sure if i am gonna put a lot of time in animation, but it could be i'll spend a lot of time in that area. Combined with some graphics it could get pretty funcky.
Tomorrow i'll start some previz and designing the characters.
06 June 2007, 11:44 PM
Looking forward to it. It's been a while, yeah. Holding down 3 jobs, trying to get into another University, working on the portfolio. It's been nuts.
I can't wait to see what you roll out. Amish Paradise. Classic:
06 June 2007, 12:42 AM
i knew this one. Little bit the base of the idea i had a while ago. But i intend to go much further than this.
It'll be more clear when i get into sketching.
06 June 2007, 09:47 AM
hehe, yeah! I knew you'll come as well. Great to see you here and waiting for some action as the idea is quite promising :)
06 June 2007, 02:49 PM
This is a first sketch of only 3 gang members.
Still need to study the characteristics of the amish folks
06 June 2007, 04:32 PM
cool man, hasidic gangsters, i can't wait to see the finished piece. oo sorrry its amish my bad. still cool
06 June 2007, 09:28 PM
I find it excellent and funny.
Just take a look at the rules, I think there is something about religions...
06 June 2007, 03:51 AM
This looks like an awesome concept. It's already got me laughing. I can't wait to see it finished.
06 June 2007, 11:08 AM
gpepper, i'll have a look at the rules, but i think it shouldn't be a problem since i don't really make fun with their religion. Their believes are a little the reason why their behavior is out of the normal.
but i'll check it out. Thanks a lot.
06 June 2007, 11:22 AM
got me chuckling straight away... This is already crazy:curious:
06 June 2007, 02:03 PM
It definitely falls into the category of strange (but really funny) behavior. Good jerb.
06 June 2007, 02:15 PM
héhé Nico, really love the idea :scream:. I've immediatly one image in mind, the intro scene from the movie snatch
HAhA, can't wait to see more.
06 June 2007, 01:08 AM
Don't know why i started the some shoes, but i just felt like it. Based on some DC sneakers i wear.
These DC's of mine are way cooler, but i wonder if this is a copyright problem if i use them digitally?
anyway. Soon some more sketches for the characters.
06 June 2007, 01:36 AM
The shoes are wonderfully modeled and textures, I don’t think there is anything wrong with using the likeness of the shoes, as long as it doesn’t have there logo or trademarked design features on them. But here is a wonderful little Disney copyright montage that should hopefully explain about copyrighted material:
keep up the good work.
06 June 2007, 01:36 AM
good to see you here Nico.
Best of luck!
06 June 2007, 02:06 AM
Thanks a lot guys !!
thanks james for the link. It was helpfull in a way. Now i just think in a sence like: when you make a video clip and where these shoes, there is no copyright violation. I think you can't use a logo on a real product, but in 3d i think it's a different story.
i'll see what happens.
Steven, best of luck to you too.
06 June 2007, 05:41 AM
hey Nico, i realy like your idea, and your strat is just great, the shoes are awsome, if everithing will go like them , this would be a great scene.
cheers mate !:bounce:
06 June 2007, 06:43 AM
It start really good, but this isn't a surprise. :)
GO Nico, the 3D leads you ! :scream:
06 June 2007, 07:49 AM
Nice concept and even nicer shoe modeling. You also don't seem to waist any time.
I don't think you have to worry about the copyright if you don't use the logo.
Didn't notice until now that you're also from Belgium so...veel succes!
06 June 2007, 08:12 AM
The shoes are cool !
Strange behavior to begin with this !
06 June 2007, 09:57 AM
great shoes... i like the idea too... amish gangsta time
06 June 2007, 10:28 AM
Hey Nico !
Thoses shoes are so cool ... look like mine right now :)
Your concept is really weird too , should be really funny to set up the crazy amish guys!
Can't wait for more !
06 June 2007, 11:24 AM
Andrei: thanks a lot! I try to do everything right from the start this time. Only problem is that i would like to make a big render, and then you need a lot of detail. But if i do animation it would be an overkill to have too much detail. oh, the dilemma !!
Cyril: damn, what do i have to do to surprise you guys :banghead:
Dries: Thanks, i posted the shoes under modeling, while i think it is more shading and texturing that makes it the way it looks now. Maybe i'll put a little more time in it if the time is available.
ps. what region of belgium are you from? Not much belgian participants here. way too small country.
gpepper: strange behaviour huh! maybe i should do the clothes first and then model the character :buttrock:
but it all makes sense - i'm as strange as can be!
icedeyes: thanks, and it'll be a huge gansta freak show.
Zapan: sweet man. Is it the one with the flames? I think i'll also make a version that resembles my DC's cause i think they are way too cool.
And set up the crazy amish guys ?! i hope i'll do a good job at the set-up cause i suck serious. You got and experience in set-up? I did learn from my last setup i shouldn't bother too much with weight-painting, and use morph targets. I think i'll spend a huge time on that part.
cheers all, i have to work and i'll be able to do some concept deesign on the character.
see ya'll soon
06 June 2007, 04:17 PM
sheesh I'm behind :) Great job on the shoes ... looking funkey ;)
06 June 2007, 04:43 PM
Very nice shoes. The texture and weathering looks especially nice.
06 June 2007, 09:32 PM
Just a few thoughts. They should change more cause now they don't look too hilarious.
06 June 2007, 09:38 PM
hiya Nothingness ..funny stuff here :). nice sneakers there! will follow this closely
06 June 2007, 09:44 PM
hahah.. funny idea.. great start.. good luck man
06 June 2007, 09:46 PM
Lincoln was an amish ! :scream: :scream:
great portraits Nico, really. Can't wait to see the final version in 3D !
06 June 2007, 10:22 PM
the shoes look good
and the idea is pretty cool, will follow this thread
will participate as well i guess, but in the illustration section this time, because I think I will not make it here in the animation/model category with only 4 months to go and my job and the vacation and all that ....
so untill later
btw I think there are quite some belgian guys here for such a small country
so, keep it up my fellow belgians, lol :)
06 June 2007, 11:30 PM
Thanks Hamid, glad to have you aboard
maksy: thanks a lot and good luck to you too.
Cyril: yeah, i need to change that head :-D I'm only really satisfied with the first head.
Tom, i was wondering when you were gonna join. It's always hard with a job and holidays, but luckily this time we have 4 months. And yeah, many belgians, but only 3 by my count. Maybe there are more. Who knows. You were more busy with animation right? If i'm not mistaken, i could definetly use your advice in the near future :bounce:
ps. the first character in the last image will be the one and only zeropac
cheers all and good night
06 June 2007, 07:53 PM
*apologisies in advance*
give it to me baby.. uhuh uhuh
Seriously though... some of the amish from arian heritage have real heavy set bone structures like a swedish masseur... it may be cool to include 1 big badass, maybe like a young recruit or something
06 June 2007, 10:23 AM
Hey Nico !
Aha , despite your saying , I find them really funny !
Great style and look !
You got and experience in set-up? I did learn from my last setup i shouldn't bother too much with weight-painting, and use morph targets. I think i'll spend a huge time on that part.
Same situation over here ... but that's probably a good thing for me to get into animation and rigging a little bit further than classic illsutrations I made so far. Should be really fun , and I'm sure you're gonna do a really great job at it.
Can't wait for more !
06 June 2007, 11:04 AM
Nice drawing, i like the left one. He looks like a blend between Flea and Tupac :)
Have you got an idea how you wille be making the hair and beard? Are you gonna go for modeling or do you use a hair plugin?
Anyway have fun and see you around.
By the way i'm from Hasselt.
06 June 2007, 11:29 AM
Hey DaddyMack, thanks. I was planning on making a big bad-ass too but the sketches weren't good enough yet. I was planning on ginving him little dreads and putting a "koekoeksklok" around his neck. (didn't find a translation, but it's the klok with the bird inside) as a hilarious link to that guy from public enemy that wears a big watch around his neck.
Stéphane, sweet, i hope i can get an even better look for the 3d models. At the moment i'm modeling the zeropac character. I might even call him 11fingaz.
And rigging i've just did for posing characters. But when it comes to animation it will be hell.
Dries, great you like the first character. I'll basically base them on icons but it's not always easy. For the hair i'm not sure. I used maya's hair once and it sucks in 2 ways. One is it is hard to use in animation (mostly for a female character with longer hair) so it shouldn't be a problem here. And second and the worst of 'm all, it's a b**** to render that stuff. Anti-aliasing is awfull and render times are huge. Maybe if it's a problem i'll use paint-effects, convert it to polys and rig it a litte so it's easy to animate it cartoonishly. It might be a lot's of polys, but it'll render faster then maya's hair.
And with poly's and textures i'm not really experienced in. It'll fail no doubt. Also does the hairs need to be a little curly. So that will be hard.
07 July 2007, 12:03 AM
Please note, this is the basic shape !! I'll have a look into detailing and styling it with zbrush. But before i do that i need to have the body and make sure the neck is finished.
Also will i be doing a test first with displacement cause sometimes that can be a hell in maya. If it doesn't work or takes too long, i'll try something else. For animation it is rather essential we can render fast enough.
I hope i can change this face and it's topology to model the base for some other characters. Would save a lot of time.
crits on te topology are most welkome.
07 July 2007, 08:58 AM
Cool start with the modeling !
The flow of the edges looks good !
07 July 2007, 11:53 AM
perfect topology :) great concept, we will have a nice piece of art here! Good luck, and I'm waiting for more.
07 July 2007, 06:06 PM
Thanks gpepper and Arturro
i hope the topology is good enough for zbrush work. We'll see when we get to that point huh.
now busy on the body. Still have to work this night but in the next 2 days i should get a nice update on the first character.
07 July 2007, 08:47 PM
really great modeling as usual Nico. I'm really eager to see how you'll manage the body, and work it in Zb.
07 July 2007, 10:37 PM
yeah, so am i
the plan is just to make a standard good body with correct topology and shape. (for the animation part) and then adjust the shape to have an appropriate comic style for the character. I don't think i'm gonna zbrush for the body. It's only on character that has a naked torso.
but i only fear the set-up part. If all should go well up to the animation, i should do the clothes fully simulated. That will be fun. I'll buy a lot of booz and asperines for those times.
07 July 2007, 01:37 AM
yeah man u better be ready hehe :) this gonna be kewl i can wait to see this finished , i will keep a close eye on this one :)
07 July 2007, 01:43 PM
He he! Nice idea :)
Wish you luck
07 July 2007, 07:13 PM
i'm back for only a little time.
Spend a lot of freaking out on this model. I hope i don't have much problems texturing and uv-aditing this.
Next thing is finishing the body of the first Character.
07 July 2007, 07:18 PM
Thanks a lot INIX and Demitsuri.
Little explenation on the tricycle: i have to model a carriage that will be pimped, and i wasn't in the mood to model an animal since i'm not in the mood to spend too much time on it.
So, i modeled this tricycle that is way too absurd to even be able to ride, and should pull the carriage.
The wheels are actually wooden rims, had disc-brakes. Also the shork-absorbers on the front wheel only absorb shocks when hitting a wall.
Front part is too long so turning is way too hard and the steer is huge.
The sphere you see will become a disco ball.
Cheers, i'll post around the challenge when i got relaxed a little.
07 July 2007, 07:44 PM
Hey Nico !
Woaa , your tricycle is really awesome , love the design !
Can't wait for more
07 July 2007, 08:54 PM
I might still change some things when i can take a little distance from the modeling. The design could have been better, but i spend way too much time on designing it cause i couldn't find anything that looked like this.
It's all one big pile of "merde"
I'll propably change the the back plate with the disco sphere. Don't really like it.
07 July 2007, 11:44 PM
Super amish!! hahah it´s a really cool idea dude!
keep it on!
07 July 2007, 01:22 AM
this could turn out to be quite a laugher once it's done! Great idea....wish I thought of it! Love the cuckoo clock bling. so funny! Congrats on a great idea....looking forward to it coming to life.
07 July 2007, 01:27 AM
Sandpiper, thanks a lot. I am hoping to make it a huge laughter, but there will be so much i never done, so i hope i succeed. Maybe i'll even try and animate a gansta trying to drive this bike with the cariage attached to it. Will be a fun closer.
But all in good time.
07 July 2007, 08:20 AM
I like you work, in special the structure bike...
07 July 2007, 09:50 AM
I love the cocowatch idéa, the other caracters ar awsome to and great modeling on the bike.
07 July 2007, 02:20 PM
dude nice work u have done on the bike , cant wait to see it rendered :)
07 July 2007, 02:35 PM
While cleaning up the TriCycle, i thought i start a little to experiment with shading and lighting.
Now you also see a little more from the detail of the tricycle.
07 July 2007, 02:45 PM
infoarq: thanks a lot :bounce:
mr_carl: thnx too. The clock should be fun. Maybe the possibilitie for the animation with this clock could be hilarious. Other ideas for characters are still comming.
INIX: thanks. I'll still keep most of the focus on modeling, so i'll see how far i get with my time.
07 July 2007, 04:03 PM
07 July 2007, 09:19 PM
Very detailed modeling, keep it going.
Waiting characters with impatient.
07 July 2007, 06:42 AM
hey Nico, this is getting better and better. good luck mate , waiting for a new update. :bounce:
07 July 2007, 06:02 PM
thanks a lot all!
infoarq: thanks. I don't intent to post a lot of tests, but i wasn't really happy with the detail you could see with the ambiant occlusion renders. Soon i'll post the render with all the chrome.
demitsuri: yeah, i want to continue the character asap. I think i'll try and finish up the tricycle and then finish the first character. The tricycle is still getting a little detail and i'm fixing the shading. Will only have little textures to do.
Andrei, how are you doing? thnx a lot. I'll only be able to continue from friday. I'll be able to do a heck lot of work.
07 July 2007, 06:52 PM
Well. Nice car. Thats all for now. Hope to see more. Good luck man.
07 July 2007, 05:43 PM
I'll show the body when i attached the hand and finished some other details.
So now you know i'm still alive and modeling
07 July 2007, 06:49 PM
And here is the rest.
- the lower part will be hidden for all characters behind the simulated clothes.
- The feet will propably disapear and replaced directly with the shoes.
- This is also a mere base mesh that will be shaped when the head is added and to fit the characteristics of the character.
07 July 2007, 09:32 PM
Not sure what's mis with this one. But i still need to do some adjustments and detail and hopefully it will look better then.
update: hopefully it's cause it's not cartoony enough.
07 July 2007, 12:18 AM
Now these are kind of 3 base characters for the animation. Still don't look like i want them to be but then again, they still don't have textures nor hair nor clothes.
Now i can think about the typical other characters.
The shorty: the little fat guy with the klock around the neck.
The middle: the goody zeropac with the braid in the beard.
The long: the old PIMP with the long white beard and possible the scratching DJ. (should be fun if it works out)
07 July 2007, 02:29 AM
Looks awesome so far. You're really moving at a good pace. My once crit would be to try and give those 3 body types a little more variation. Perhaps the short guy should be even shorter and a bit more chubby and the tall skinny guy more lanky and bony. Of course, you may already have an idea in your head where you are going with this and could not even need that much variation. Just an idea. ;)
07 July 2007, 02:35 AM
I'm also doing other characters and it's not always easy to do that much variation.
On the other hand, the old guy will have more variation with his bend pose that i can only do when it's rigged. And with the clothes you won't see too much of aal that shape. Only one has a naked torso. Much differnce will be in the hair and hair-style.
Plus i was hoping to be able to take the faces into zbrush for some detailing. Cause right now you can't really see the long one is old.
i hope this is clear enough i kind of know where this is going
anyway, i think i'll need my time for the more intensive parts of the challenge.
thanks for the comments
ps. there is an even chubbyer character on the way ;-)
07 July 2007, 03:13 AM
Great job on those early shoe models, clean modeling and the textures are great. The overal gangsta amish is a neat concept, it kind of winds up an open playground for you too spin a lot of jokes off. Nice shader on the tric, love the overall design.
The base mesh on the characters seems good. It'll be nice to see it when you start doing the broad variations on the head, but I can understand why you're leaving that till you get them through ZB.
Great stuff so far, you're moving along at good speed :)
07 July 2007, 04:52 PM
Hey Nico...good to see you back! The last challenge was a good lesson for us...eh!?! :D
I'm glad to hear that you're going to go the route of using simulated clothing as I hope to do the same. Maybe we can share what we learn from the experience and help each other out. I'm sure it will be cool yet frustrating at times to get the clothes to behave correctly.
As for you concept and modeling, everything looks good so far. I do have an idea that you can use if you do decide to go the animation route. Perhaps you can have a non-Amish newspaper reporter/photographer from a nearby town getting ready to snap a picture of the Amish gangstas as they pose with their tricycle. Just a thought. :)
07 July 2007, 05:21 PM
Thanks Kary, i'll try to implement a lot of funny stuff in the animation if i cet it right.
Uf i can just get a good and stable character set-up, then i can go back to the models and make them much better. By this time i think they suck and will do the details before going up to the rigging and skinning.
glad to see ya again.
At the moment i'm not concerned with the storyboard since i don't know how far i'll get. But i have some seperate idea's to use to make it hilarious. I was already planning on doing a posing, but it's more like in a show-off of the gang
Some ideas are: the 12fingered gansta showing off the mods on his cariage and playing with the air shocks. But at a point the cariage will flip over and fall on it's side.
Another one is the old long grandpa Amisch PIMP putting up a record ( LP ) and accedently starts scratching cause he has a huge shake in his muscles. Call it parkinson if you must :buttrock:
About the simulation of cloth: i'm gonna use Syflex since it works way much better than maya's nCloth, is simpler and faster. Eaven gets better results. I already used it to shape clothes for a personal project i was doing, and i'm getting the hang of the workflow. It will only have a few possible problems when doing longer animation.
But i sure wouldn't mind giving tips and hints when you get into trouble with is.
07 July 2007, 07:19 PM
okay, just to show you guys i'm alive, here a first texturing screenshot. It's the first time i did it this way so i still need to tweek in photoshop.
The last week i've been busy with building a setup and a script to automate the controls so i don't need to do this with every character. I hope i don't get into many trouble skinning them.
07 July 2007, 01:07 AM
okay, so i did do some detail in zbrush
curious to see if it will all be worth it.
07 July 2007, 10:53 AM
Great updates. Like the modeling on the hands and the skinny body.
Since alot of details are going to be hidden by the clothes i think it's a good idea
to focus on the visible parts. Unless you want to show the hidden parts in a turntable to
show your modelling skills.
By the way: the bike looks great. Curious about the textures.
07 July 2007, 01:58 PM
this character is the only one with a naked torso, otherwise i wouldn't have spend time on the detail and textures. But it still need a lot of work.
At the moment i'm doing all kind of morphs for the face. I already have a huge amount, but i still haven't started the ones for the speetch.
But it is going faster than expected so no probs there.
07 July 2007, 07:35 AM
Hey Nico !
Great progress ! love the details ... also I agree that he's very detailled , getting the character a bit older ...
Can't wait for more ,
07 July 2007, 04:16 PM
woaw nice detailing :)
i i love the way the texture is coming out :) cant wait to see more
07 July 2007, 07:24 PM
good model, just the folds on the face seem a bit too rough and big.
08 August 2007, 02:02 PM
Hey Stephane, thanks a lot. I'm still nog happy with the detail so maybe lots will change.
INIX, thanks. I hope the shading and SSS will work well with the textures or i'll have to change it too. But we are learning along the way.
Ania, thnx, i know it's way too rough. A lot of it should go away when the SSS kicks in, but it still needs to good before i go there.
I hope i'll work some more soon cause time is going fast.
08 August 2007, 10:58 PM
... Curious, are you gonna make them rap?...
08 August 2007, 02:55 AM
knock, knock!! Lets get some updates!!
08 August 2007, 01:44 PM
Hey DaddyMack, i'm not sure if i'm gonna use voice, but i was planning on making grand-pa scratch. Voice was propably gonna be more like cartoonish text balloons. But rap could be an option.
Hey Jesse, I know, i know !! :banghead: :-P
still one night to work and then i'll be free for 7 days to work on the challenge. I'll finish the setup and do some animation tests. Then move on to finishing the other characters and then start on the real animation. Then i can do the shaders and lighting and all of that. I hope i can finish this one. I lost a lot of time.
