Ok, it's the first time i try myself at a CGChallenge, and this is my first very quick sketch. I will try out some different angles and/or ideas, what do you guys think of this one?

Here's the same sketch in some color. I have some new cool ideas in my mind and will draw them later.

Well, this fish enjoys it's holidays no matter where it was, or how filthy the place was...

06-27-2007, 07:04 PM
Very good idea !! I llike the intent to call the attention of nature protection!
This kind a challenge is a good oportunity to make a very good use of image cominication.
Keep going !!

06-27-2007, 07:32 PM
Hey Jassar!
Good to see you in this challenge! I liked your Leopard scene very much!
I'm sure this thread will be great too! Your both concepts are very good,
I think the first one with the "performance artist" will be a tough one, many
characters with lots of facial expressions, but hey, we have four months to
finish the contest!

Good luck!

06-27-2007, 07:41 PM
Thanks guys

I have another idea and I will post it soon, then I will see which one is the best with your help!

06-27-2007, 07:45 PM
Oh, and since the scene will be full of details, I've chose to do a 2D illustration :) , probably with some 3D elements.

06-27-2007, 08:07 PM
lol that dancer is great
have fun!

An alien species attack earth during the cave-men era, but after a long and bloody battle everyone gets crazy and the ones who lived take a group photograph.
Strange huh?

06-27-2007, 09:08 PM
Haha,Ronfl, Ronfl!Very funny, that last one! That could be huge fun doing that pic!HAve fun mate!

06-28-2007, 09:33 AM
OKMER, thanks man. I had a feeling you would like this final image, lol :scream:

06-28-2007, 01:29 PM
nice start gasser :)

06-28-2007, 02:09 PM
Good to see you & nice start .... the last one its soo funny.... Good luck

06-28-2007, 03:58 PM
yassein, griffinart, it's great to have you here my friends :)
I'm looking forward to seeing your ideas and work.

06-28-2007, 06:24 PM
Hehe Jassar, your last sketch with the aliens really made my day!
Keep up the good work!

06-28-2007, 07:52 PM
Good luck :applause: :applause:

06-29-2007, 09:09 AM
Man! these are some nice concepts, the first one made me lugh :)

I don't know which one you're going to pick, but I believe you might need to work your compositions a bit, I'm not saying they're bad, but I guess they could be more interesting.

gr8 work, keep it up

06-29-2007, 09:18 AM
Thank you all,

Sherif.Nagib, you are right bro, these are just very rough sketches and I will change almost everything when I choose the best idea. I'm currently fund of the third one the most, but I might come up with more ideas

06-29-2007, 04:32 PM
Hi Jassar!

No matter wich one you pick they're all great and I know you'll do them very well and funny! I'll follow your thread! Be well and good luck!!!

Well, I guess I've finally found my favorit idea. A crew of pirates fall in shock when they see this funky looking old wizard swooshing by in the middle of nowhere!
I still have to work alote on the details and composition, but at least I've nailed the idea :)

07-03-2007, 07:04 PM
Ok, I'm still with the pirates concept but with a few changes, the wizard is out and instead I'll put the captain of the ship...

If I don't have any new ideas soon I will change it..

Well, I've chosen to make the weather stormy, and all the pirates are struggling to survive....
But one of them ( maybe the captain ) is in another world!

Well, this is a rough sketch of the playful pirate

07-07-2007, 06:46 PM
nice steps jassar >>>>

07-12-2007, 03:31 PM
Do the wizardthing! Do the wizardthing!

07-12-2007, 07:05 PM
Thanks guys,
Most people liked the last idea, so i guess i'll stick to that one :)
but i still need loads of ideas for the background story. If you have any cool ideas please tell :D

Well, here's the first sketch for the ship. Once i choose a good concept for it I will start modeling a rough 3D object.

07-13-2007, 03:00 PM

ok, this is the model which I will use to choose the best angle for the scene.

Well, just to share a WIP image with you guys, this is a close up of a part of the background characters...
I'm still working on the line art, no need to hurry i guess :)

It's not totally finished yet, there will be more pirates and more detail on the ship,
comments are very welcome :)

07-26-2007, 09:59 AM
nice work jassar :scream:

07-26-2007, 03:50 PM
Thanks for the support OMS :)

07-26-2007, 04:19 PM
I like the turtle surfer.

07-26-2007, 05:35 PM
Although its an interesting idea, its a not too subtle borrow from Pirates of the Caribbean and Jack's story about roping sea turtles.

07-26-2007, 06:08 PM
Gord, thanks alote

killer-instinct, I can change the turtle if it makes the painting too "Jacky", a dolphin perhaps? or a squid?

07-26-2007, 06:31 PM
http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/19/12622/12622_1185474684_medium.jpg (http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/19/12622/12622_1185474684_large.jpg)

ok, so I liked the sound of the squid idea, I might actually stick to it since it adds more strangness to the image,
what do u guys think? turtle or squid?

07-26-2007, 07:24 PM
http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/19/12622/12622_1185477864_medium.jpg (http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/19/12622/12622_1185477864_large.jpg)

Yup, that's one big squid!

07-27-2007, 01:10 AM
Hey Haitham

It’s really good to see you here man, I really loved the ideas you came up with so far. I know its quiet freaky – 1st time CG Challenge – it is my 1st time here too, but am full of hopes.

Wish you good luck man

07-27-2007, 08:09 AM
Hala Mukhatib, keefak?

Yes it's kinda freaky, but very fun nontheless :) , and since your in it too I will go check your thread..

Here's the scene so far; I've added some more detail to the ship, and will hopefully add some more.

I might draw some shark fins sticking out of the water, hmmmmm I should try this idea :)

07-28-2007, 11:34 PM
Just my opinion, but I think the turtle has more potential for humour than the squid (if that is what you are after). Keep up the good work!

07-29-2007, 01:39 AM
I have to agree with Gord.. The turtle would have less of a "conquered" feel to it since turtles are less intimidating than giant squids.

I do like the composition and the characters though

07-29-2007, 12:33 PM
Thanks guys :)

Yes, I do agree that the turtle was much funnier, but I had to change it because I don't want this painting to seem to similar to the Pirates movies.
Also, it would be interesting and more challenging to give a squid some funny characteristics don't u think? I hope I can do it.

07-29-2007, 07:06 PM
Hey don't change all your ideas because of what I said. In my opinion, the whole scene is a grab from the pirates movies, not just the turtle. Go ahead and do whatever you want, just don't claim it as your own ideas.

07-30-2007, 08:07 AM
keep going my friend defentily a start for a good work so keep it up

ok, just started painting, the timing will be during the night and the main light source will be a lightning-bolt.
colors are still at the beginning and will change to fit the scene as much as possible.

thebest, thanks bro :)

Well, I'm back on track and started to work on my image again..
I've painted the gun ( forget the hand, it's not done yet ).
Will post some more images when I finish something else :)

08-09-2007, 07:30 AM

Well, I got tired from that pirate, so I thought of working a bit on the squid, still far from finished of course :)

thebest, ah well man, crits will fall on me like rain soon, but not now since there's nothing really done and ready for crits.

08-10-2007, 06:28 AM
Hey Jassar, nice sketches and cool idea!! I like a lot your squid texture, really great! ( i can feel the gummy texture of a real squid, great !! :D ) Looking forward for more updates on your concept ! :)

Well, just another update...

08-13-2007, 02:58 AM
I think you've got a really unique texture working there, but it really makes me wonder how he could possibly maintain his balance.

08-13-2007, 08:45 AM

hmmmmm, good point, I guess it's one of lifes mysteries!

nice start keep going

08-16-2007, 08:55 PM
Thank you Antone my friend :) ... I'm currently working on the canvas ( boring stuff! ), but things are finally starting to show a little better.

09-02-2007, 12:03 PM
Cool idea and nice images so far

I`m looking forward for the next updates :bounce:

ok, I've started to work on the captain and parrot, I thought of detailing these background characters and the bg itself more than usual, though the above image shows them in the original size..

09-04-2007, 03:33 PM
http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/19/12622/12622_1188920004_medium.jpg (http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/19/12622/12622_1188920004_large.jpg)

I've worked a bit more on the parrot and the background characters, colors are not final.

09-05-2007, 09:09 AM
Ok, I am now working on the ship, after that the waves then the sky and clouds. I've found working on each element at a time gives me more focus.... but not for everything.

After that I go back to the characters for fixes and final touches.... this is my plan so far

09-05-2007, 09:16 AM
keep going my friend  can`t wait to see more :applause:

Here's another image to keep you updated as much as possible :)

09-05-2007, 08:52 PM
I'm thinking of discarding the rain, and keeping the weather stormy with lots of lightning. What do you guys think?

09-06-2007, 02:55 AM
I'd be careful with lightning. From experience, people tend to overuse it, with several lightning strikes in the same image. I personally think it looks cheesy and cliche, but its up to you.

As for your latest update, I think either your ship looks too small or your crew looks too big. I mean I know you're still sticking with the Pirates of the Caribbean idea, so the ships used in it are much larger.

At this point, your colour scheme really bothers me, but I'll hold my judgement until I see how it works with the background.

Good luck sir

09-06-2007, 08:04 AM
killer-instinct93, thank you very much for your comment :)

I'd be careful with lightning. From experience, people tend to overuse it, with several lightning strikes in the same image. I personally think it looks cheesy and cliche, but its up to you.

I must agree with that, so I'll be careful..

Yes indeed, I made the ship smaller than usual to add that toonish sense.. this is a strange behaviour challenge after all so I guess having strange things in our images is ok

09-06-2007, 11:16 AM
very nice man, keep going, seems to need a lot of work

As for your latest update, I think either your ship looks too small or your crew looks too big. I mean I know you're still sticking with the Pirates of the Caribbean idea, so the ships used in it are much larger.

well I agree with the scaling thing, yes, the ship is small and that's wrong unless he's using a cartoonic style or something.

oh, and about pirates of the caribbean, c'mon man give him a chance, he's just using the ship, maybe the overall look is kindda same, but details are so different. and using a ship doesn't mean he got it from Pirates, like using orcs is not from warcraft, or elves is not from lord of the rings.........

09-06-2007, 12:29 PM

Well, I've finally started to work on the environment. The Waves were harder to nail than I thought, they still need loads of work... but no worries there, still have more than a month to work on this piece :)

09-07-2007, 05:04 PM
oh, and about pirates of the caribbean, c'mon man give him a chance, he's just using the ship, maybe the overall look is kindda same, but details are so different. and using a ship doesn't mean he got it from Pirates, like using orcs is not from warcraft, or elves is not from lord of the rings.........
Obviously I don't have a problem with the theme of pirates, they existed before the movies.

My problem earlier was that in the first movie the act of escaping from bad guys by roping sea turtles was mentioned. But who cares, he's not going to change it now.

09-07-2007, 05:25 PM
Sheesh guys, calm down :) , let us forget about sea turtlles and focus on this threads image!

By the way, I've added some more spray and fog to the waves..Stay tuned.

09-07-2007, 05:59 PM
Nice progress Jassar

I have one crit about the whole scene: IMHO there is no depth in the image, all is looking flat  maybe a small fog on the horizont line will be enough :curious:

Nice work so far, I wish I have a so advanced image :banghead:

09-07-2007, 06:07 PM
Thanks Nomad, you've stated a very important note :) , I will add fog and will play a bit with the clouds to give the image some depth..

Here's a close up after making some adjustments. The fog is not finished yet :)

09-08-2007, 12:36 AM
Hey Jassar, really nice update mate!! cool stormy sea !! Perhaps the back light of the moon can help you to separate the ship from the background and gain depth too, only a comment :) Again great work mate!!

Please tell me if you have any notes, I'm thinking of adding more stuff at the right side of the painting to give more depth; I've already added a far lightning bolt...

To show that the lightning is hitting the ship I've added some flashes...

09-08-2007, 11:23 PM
hey man, I like your idea and the foreground is good so far, but I think there`s way too much blue in there, bit more warmer tones would be nice
for example you could make a fire on deck from the lightning hit or give the lamps on the ship a warmer light
then I also would re-color the sails
and imo stronger shadows on squid, pirate and boat and strong backlitght would create a more dramatic feeling
cheers and good luck

09-09-2007, 05:15 AM
lol... nice idea and lovely coloring, maybe am not in this competition but i admire your works and hope you the best in the competition ...... keep going:thumbsup:

09-09-2007, 07:52 AM
guterrez, thanks man, your advice is highly appreciated. I will try adding some warm colors and see what happenes.

phoenix1, thank you my friend, I'm glad u liked it :)

Well, as you can see colors have changed a bit especially the sails, and I worked a bit on the overall shadows. Lots of work still required I know..
Awaiting your valuable comments :)

09-10-2007, 09:54 AM
Funny and interesting piece
Go on :)

I have played some more on the shadows, and added some blur to the fast moving things like the parrot's wings...

09-11-2007, 09:02 AM
Hey Jassar, nice updates mate!! the lighting bolts are a great idea!! I think the far lighting bolt need to illuminate a bit more the clouds in its zone. Perhaps add some traslucency to the sails ( i think this can be a nice lighting effect) and more light on the horizon ( darker clouds on the foreground zone, more lighter in the middle, and a more lighter than middle in the background and horizon zone), only a comment :) Again great work mate!!

09-11-2007, 12:47 PM
the sails are much better now in my opinion, the stripes are a good idea cause they give them more form
the hole color scheme works better know I think, perhaps try to make the cold yellow you have in there a bit warmer; the fire in the lamps would create a more orange like glow, not to much just carefull^^
for me the yellow color strokes in the waves are a bit too much
and I have to agree with Ferx about the clouds and the horizon
this comes along nice man, have fun

09-11-2007, 12:59 PM
Ferx, guterrez, thanks alote guys :)
I do agree on that yellow and the clouds, will work on um more.

09-11-2007, 01:15 PM
Nice progress

It takes shape, I think a little more details on the background will achive the lack of depth. Some stormy clouds will be great.

I like the new sails  keep goin`...

09-11-2007, 08:51 PM
Lots of Movement and Sound within the painting. Cool!

Here's a smaller view of the image...

09-13-2007, 07:50 PM
I might keep the clouds as they are, because after reviewing some stormy cloud photos I found them to be very dark and almost textureless...

I'll post some updates soon,

Well, I thought of adding some floating objects like wooden boxes and such. What do u guys think?

09-15-2007, 05:31 PM
Hey Jassar,

Thanks a lot for stopping by my thread and leaving your awesome comments dude... I'm really digging your paint job and composition so far, and the concept is a strange behaviour indeed! Maybe you can paint some more detailed BG around the horizon line on the right side, now it looks a little bit empty I think. Some distant storms/lightnings and detailed clouds could make that part more interesting, thus carrying the eye all around the picture better. Though, great details going on in the rest of the pic, especially on the ship, I'm also really digging your sea - which is one of the things I can't paint at all :D

This is going great, keep it up buddy!

09-15-2007, 06:39 PM
I think the floating stuff is a great idea, just don`t overdo it
I also think you could work a bit more on the clouds and the horizon and last but not least: the pirate and the squid look a bit flat right now because of the white outline ( especially the squids head looks like cut and pasted )
get rid of this and I think this could really look cool

09-15-2007, 07:00 PM
Yusuf , thanks alote man :) . True, the horizon has been a problem for me so I guess I will change my original plan and make some far island-mountains to fill that space.

guterrez , yes indeed, I will work on that... thanks for pointing that out man ( working on a painting for a long time makes my eyes so used to it that I can't find any mistakes anymore  )

09-15-2007, 07:02 PM
Hello Jassar! You have made a really interesting work here! Very vibrating and cool ambient!
This is gonna be a successful piece, I'm sure!
Keep up the good work!

Ok i've done some improvements. Tell me if the BG looks better with the far mountains.

09-16-2007, 01:27 PM
Hey Jassar, really great update mate!! and I like the faraway mountains idea, is a cool touch!
Perhaps blurish a bit the most down clouds ( the clouds under mountains), more like fog than clouds, only a comment :) Great work my friend!!

09-16-2007, 02:38 PM
Perhaps blurish a bit the most down clouds ( the clouds under mountains), more like fog than clouds

Well, that's because it is fog :) , I will try to make it clearer .

09-16-2007, 05:03 PM
nice update, bit more pinkish for the squid
and I`ve also looked through some reference pics for this animal, especially the head or the upper body (don`t know what it is^^); they usually have something like transluscent "wings" on the side of their body, I think this would look cool

09-18-2007, 11:31 AM
Great look and feel dude,
ur post rocking..

I am watching regularly ...this one have good potential,

You have made some thing awesome ,can`t wait to c it in 3d, I'm sure, it would look great in 3d render!
Keep up the good work!

09-18-2007, 02:04 PM
Mathias, true I've seen them on normal squids, but in Giant Squids they are small.. I'll try adding them :)

pixelpiyan, thanks man! I'm very glad you liked it. But this is a 2D illustration as you can see and it's almost finished.

09-22-2007, 06:45 PM
Hi, just to let you guys know that I'm still alive! I'm a bit lazy these days to work on my image so I'll have a break for a few day...

09-25-2007, 01:16 AM
Hi Jassar, this looks great. I like all of your improvements...

The BG needs a little fix I believe, very easy: Right now the sea, the fog, and the mountains look like 3 separate pieces. This causes the viewer either to see that there is no fog, or to see the mountains a little too high - which makes them closer to the camera rather than further. I think there is 2 ways you can solve this:

1) You could mix-blend the blue top part of the sea more with the dark-grey bottom part of the fog, pushing the blue color a little higher in the composition, so we'd know that the horizon line is higher than it seems now, going towards the mountains. I think the line between the sea and the fog is a little harsh and low-in-the-composition right now.
2) You could bring down the mountains instead, so that the highest point of the mountains are at the same height with the center of the far away pirate, the back-flipping one :D I think this could help the mountains look smaller, thus further away... Both of these solutions would work with the horizon line at the left side of the image. Since it's standing right in the middle of 2 solutions, and it's not so prominent...

Also, you've got that beautiful lightning, a delicious blue light source in your scene. If I were you, I'd go ahead and add some harsh-blue rim lights on top of the higher sails and poles of the ship... You've already got some yellow and blue rim lights here and there, and they are placed correctly, though, they get lost in general lighting because they are not as harsh as they should be I think. They should be pretty thin, and bright...

that's my 2c buddy. keep it up!

09-25-2007, 08:37 AM
Thanks Yusuf for the great comment :) , I will work on those issues.

definitely better for me, horizon works great now!

09-27-2007, 11:16 PM
Jassar my man!! Yeaaa!! great and beautiful improvement in the horizon, that is really cool my friend!! , I love it!! (perhaps only a bit touch of brigth (only a bit:) ) on the top of the highest mountain and the right beside mountain, because of the lighting bolt, only a suggestion and comment :) ) Again, great work mate!!

09-28-2007, 10:59 AM
Jeffparadox, I'm really glad that it worked fine :) , your notes really helped!

Ferx, thanks buddy  , I was actually going to add that little light and I will do it soon I hope.

Hi guys,
I've worked some more on the mountains and the lights on the sales, I still want to do some extra fixes to the lighting on those sales but they are generally done.
Please tell me what you think, and any more suggestions/comments/crits are very very welcome :)

10-02-2007, 07:36 AM
Nice progress jassar

If I can add a crit I think you can work more on the squid skin and eye. Maybe with some underskin effects. And the eye looks "too simple". But it`s details, I like alot the whole composition and the background works well now.

Good work!

10-02-2007, 08:13 AM
Thanks Nomad, I'm happy you pointed that out, I was having my doubts about the skin after making it darker, so now I will go work on it :)

Hi again,
Some adjustments have been made on the squids' skin and on the lighting on the sails... and a few final touches :)

I'm still a bit hesitatant on calling this done, so I will hold myself untill I'm more sure...

Tell me what you guys feel about it :p , that would help alote.

10-02-2007, 03:18 PM
hey jassar, image is looking good my friend!

I love the little hole on the top sail, and the blue light glowing right through it from behind. I think you can replicate that effect a few more times more without going too far with it, making a couple of more holes maybe 1-2 bigger and 1-2 the same size at different parts of the sails, where there is lightning behind. Also your previous post had a better blue rim light on the observation nest at the top, it was harsher. Now in this new post, i think you've softened it up a bit. Though, that's the character of the rim light, they need to be pretty harsh to read that way. If I were you, I'd go back to the previous rim light on the observation nest, and imitate that on the other parts of the poles. Also, I'd add the same kind of rim lights to the top part of the top sails, like a line - following the sails top contour. One last suggestion: If your ship, or the sails of the ship is on one separate layer, I'd lock the pixels of that layer/or make a selection of that layer, then choose my gradient tool, put it to soft light or hard light blending mode, drop its opacity a little, and apply a very light - whitish blue color gradient starting from top right towards bottom left, following the direction of the lightning. That would give your sails a blue light at the top, fading towards the bottom, thus placing your whole ship more inside the environment.

These are my suggestions buddy, keep up the good work, and feel free to ask if anything I said was unclear... rock on! :D

10-02-2007, 06:39 PM
Thanks again Yusuf :) , good thing fixing the observation nest is simple. I will try the other things you mentioned as well.

10-02-2007, 07:21 PM
holy cow!! i missed so much!! i really like your concept! funny and dramatic the same time! :p the squid's skin is amazing! love the colour and wet feel of it! ..
there's one thing i noticed ... lightning is not that visible behind the sails .. meaning in terms of glow strength ... light can be seen through cloth .. best example is a lamp shade .... let the light spill behind the sails ... jeff is right in terms of the blue rim light .. accentuate it more and see how it looks :P

your concept rocks! :buttrock: cant wait to see the grand finale! :bounce: cheers dude!

10-02-2007, 07:33 PM
Hey nwiz25 , or should I call you the master of reflection? :) ( I've just been in your thread but there's an error and I can't reply  )

I'm very thankful for everyone's advice and I shall do my best at fixing this piece as much as I can. This challenge deserves all the hard work!

10-03-2007, 07:31 PM
Really awesome image!! The squid rendering is great, love it

http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/19/12622/12622_1191679719_medium.jpg (http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/19/12622/12622_1191679719_large.jpg)

Hi, I've finally worked on my piece, and based on your helpful suggestions I think it became better.
Some of the fixes:
- the shading on the crazy squid-surfer, the squid and some parts of the ship.

-worked on those sails and phew! that translucency effect was a bit of a problem.

-added some green tunes to the image, it was a bit too blue.

So tell me what you guys think :)

10-06-2007, 02:35 PM
A delicate touch up but very powerful. Your image is jumping out a lot more than before with your tweaks. I like the slickness of the squid-surfer, it ties him more to the squid. The touches are small but they really enhanced your scene greatly, especially on the sails. Great job with the green tones, it richens the environment and does a great job around the lightning and sky. I only have one thing I would like you to try if you think it would help. When lightning strikes, even though it seems bright all the way through, it has less saturated color as it goes higher into the clouds, because the clouds mask it. The lightning in your scene is the same intensity all the way through and makes it seem too close and a bit flat. Give the lightning some distance and get the top of it to go more off into the distance and into the clouds. Just slightly, not too much, just enough for our eyes to read that slight change and depth of field.

10-06-2007, 02:45 PM
Thanks Kamal :) , though I skimmed through many ref images of lightning and found my lighning similar to them but your tip is worth a try :D

10-06-2007, 04:29 PM
For me the image is cool  there is enough details and not too much :)

Maybe one little doubt about the captain standing on the boat, maybe he is too dark and we see only his silhouette. IMHO few brown strokes on the jacket will help.

Ayway good work so far :bounce:

10-07-2007, 06:05 PM
Many thanks Nomad for the kind words and for the support :)

10-08-2007, 02:17 AM
Hey Jassar, i like a lot all your changes, really great my friend !! for sure this is a cool, great and funny illustration!!
About the sky and clouds light, I think it can be more darker from the center mast of the ship to the left, only a comment:) Again, really great and cool work my friend! Cheers!!

10-08-2007, 03:17 AM
maybe showing the lightning line through the top 2 sails, very softly and blurry, could increase the translucency effect even more? it's getting better and better!

10-08-2007, 08:34 AM
Ferx, thanks :D, will try to make the sky darker in those parts.

Yusuf, you are the afandim! the translucency was a headace for sure!

10-08-2007, 10:52 AM
I have to agree with nwiz25, the squid is really looking great, you`ve done a good job on its skin with this textures, looks damn cool
I also like the ship; there`s a lot of action going on without disturbing the main character
I`m not sure if this can work physically with the ships sails and the wind, but it would be cool if the rain was coming from the right

great progress man, keep it up

10-08-2007, 03:09 PM
Rrrrr, batten the hatches me-hearties, this be a salty tale (and wonderful image) of a rustler of Squid on the high seas. Or is this the new Squid Taxies I have heard so much of? Very intriguing work!

10-08-2007, 07:39 PM
guterrez, thanks again man, I know what you mean :D , I wanted the rain to come from the other direction too but physically it's not possible.

Korendo, ah! well, this is squid-surfing, which happenes to be a popular sport among pirates  but it becomes even stranger when played in a storm I guess, lol.

10-10-2007, 12:40 PM
http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/19/12622/12622_1192020022_medium.jpg (http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/19/12622/12622_1192020022_large.jpg)

Hi guys!
First I would like to thank all who helped me during this great challenge! a big thank you :)
I worked some more on the final touches and I feel it's safe now to call this one done. I hope you like it as well.

Ever wondered how pirates pass the time during those long monthes at sea?
They play many sports! one of them is the strange sport of Squid-Surfing!
What's even stranger than squid-surfing? ..... playing it in a storm!
This sport demands great skill and balance, and Mad Moe -seen in this image- is a master!
I wonder if the poor squids feel good about this sport as well, lol.

10-10-2007, 02:38 PM
This is LOVELY! Hahahaha I love that other pirate back there falling on his face:scream: I wish you the best of judging Jassar, it was great having you in the challenge!

Best wishes, LOVE the work!

10-10-2007, 02:47 PM
Hey Kamal! thanks bro :D best wishes to you too.... I'll be keeping an eye on your progress.

Peace :buttrock:

10-11-2007, 01:24 AM
Lighting, textures composition, and color all great! What made me think of cowboys was the rope around the squid, surfers I think balance on a board, hands free. But Squid is far more slippery so a rope is well advised. Rest assured your concept is solid! RRRR

10-11-2007, 08:28 AM
Thanks Korendo :) , if you imagined it as a rodio then it workes fine with me :D

10-11-2007, 02:33 PM
Jassar, mate, you're done! Congradulations...

You've done agreat job with this illustration, didn't give up and refined it to a very good level towards the end too, which I think improved your lighting and overall look greatly. The little details you've added like the rain lifted the quality of your image aswell. It's a very funny scene, and a strange one indeed :D You should be very proud of your work. Best of luck with the voting my friend...

10-11-2007, 02:46 PM
Hey Jeff! thanks afandim :) , I thank you for all the advice you gave me, it helped me alote man

Though I'm not sure if this image would actually win anything, but I'm proud of it non the less :D

Good luck to all of you with the voting!

10-12-2007, 09:52 AM
Hey Jassar, great my friend!! Great and cool illustration !! The squid is awesome, impressive texture on it!! I love it. The whole image is rich, powerful and really dynamic and funny! You make an amazing art work!! Congratulations my friend, you have a great talent! I dig in your thread, and i like a lot all the evolution on your concept to the final stage! Again awesome work and the best of luck Jassar !! :)

And now is time for a really well deserved cold beers and a big tequila bottle! Cheers my friend!!

10-12-2007, 10:00 AM
Excellent work Jassar, Congratulations!
I like the lighting and the composition very much, as well as the dynamic in the scene!
You have done a great job, my friend!
Best of luck!

10-12-2007, 10:25 AM
Ferx, thanks buddy! it's party time!! , come on finish your scene so we could both celebrate!

varma, many thanks man :) good luck to you too man, I'll be watching your progress.

Well, I just added a few rain drops in front of the surfer.... I couldn't help myself.. I had to do something!
It's hard to sit back and watch everyone else work hard, lol, I have to keep on working too...
but now it's really done (I hope!)...

10-14-2007, 06:53 PM

The rain works great!

Made a dumb song, hope this does not border on posting abuse. Sung to the tune of “Sponge Bob Square Pants”

Oh he …lives on a pirate ship on the high seas,

Pirate, surfer, eye-patch!

His squid it is healthy and has no disease,

Pirate, surfer, eye-patch!

A gale wind is blowing, with very rough seas,

Pirate, surfer, eye-patch!

But his squid he is surfing with the greatest of ease!

Pirate, surfer, eye-patch!

Pirate, surfer, eye-patch!

Pirate, surfer, eye-patch!

10-14-2007, 09:18 PM
harrrr, what a fine piece of arrrt!
congratulation for finishing your piece; it came a long way and you did a great job
just looked trough your portfolio again and I think this is by far your best work
my secret hero is definately the squid in this picture, the skin looks damn cool and the translucent colors are great
best wishes from me

Wow, a free ride. Now that is adventure.

Thanks and glad Moe was pleased.

Ever wondered how pirates pass the time during those long months at sea?
They play many sports! one of them is the strange sport of Squid-Surfing!
What's even stranger than squid-surfing? ..... playing it in a storm!
This sport demands great skill and balance, and Mad Moe -seen in this image- is a master!
I wonder if the poor squids feel good about this sport as well, lol.

** just thought of re-posting the image with the story**
