View Full Version : Turn Geometry Into Light Source/Emit Fog
Guess the "rendering" forum is the best place to seek advice on this prob:
Look at the "One Ring To Rule Them All (http://media.monstersandcritics.com/articles/1206051/article_images/oneringtorulethemall.jpg)"
Note the light rays emitting from the letters themselves.
Yeah, this is most likely a post effect, but I like to try doing this in Maya using volumetric fog emitted from a light source..... this is where I start pulling my hair out.
I have my ring, the words are displaced into the ring with displac approx node.
I applied a incandescence map to the ring to have the letters illuminate slightly.
To do the fog:
I could turn the ring into a light source, make it emit fog, apply a gobo to have only the letters emit light & fog. prob is I don't understand how to turn geometry into a ligthsouce.....aside from FG.
If my workflow is incorrect, please correct me. How would you guys do this?

I would make real holes on the ring then use a physical light inside it. Use your prefered volumetric way in Metal Ray and you should get some rays coming.
But as you said it's done in post without any doubt.
Thanks for the input.
Any idea how its done in post. I could do it in photoshop but it would be tedious to match the rings angle to the zoom blurred rays.
Maybe they use particles emitted out and comp it.

It's done in post with plugins such as Trapcode (http://www.trapcode.com/products_shine.html) or Saphire (http://www.trapcode.com/products_shine.html)
You can simulate it in Photoshop too but it's not as easy as in those tools.
On the other hand I'm attaching a file describing the idea how to do it in 3D as well.
Hope this could be any help to you.
Nice references man...
I'm just finishing up "Creating Motion Graphics with AE" vol. 1, so that plugin won't be to hard to use.
Unfortunatly I'm not going to shell out 100 beans to get it.......starting school in 98 days, gotta stick to my budget.
But I'll still 'try' it.
You on 8.5, I'm on 8.0, can't open the file, maybe a .ma would work

Here is it again.
Ahhhh...can't open that either. No worries....
It would be to laborous to try to match the displacement of the lettering on the ring with holes IMO.
I'll try the plugin. The thing about plugins is they give corny results sometimes, as with PS I usually tweak the hell outta the plugins effects & the results are superior.
Let ya know how it turns out.
