I did some for commercials.
Basically, you need to shape animate (morph) a simplified mesh with edges placed where the real paper would bend/wrap and/or build simple rig to drive that mesh. Then you can wrap (maya) shrinkwrap (xsi) (don't know about max) hires mesh onto it so it deforms nicely.
Try to unwrap something slowly and observe how you do it, that will give you idea how the shapes should look and where to place the edges.
The biggest problem with these are intersections, but you can cheat around them.
