Ok, I've been watching and I couldn't resist. I really don't have anytime at the moment due to bla, bla, bla (I'll spare you all) but we'll see how much I can get done : )

I'm not very good and I'm certainly no match for ZBrush or Mud but here is my start in Maya: ( ( ( (
Crits are very welcomed here : )
(I've only had a few hours and I'm slow... forgive me for being not very far)

06 June 2007, 08:40 AM
Looks like a handy start John ...

Glad to see you aboard, I sensed you would, it is your destiny ....

06 June 2007, 09:12 PM
Good man!

06 June 2007, 09:40 PM
Nice start mate.....

06 June 2007, 05:27 PM
the hand looks really good! waiting for the rest of Han to emerge =)

06 June 2007, 08:44 PM
Thanks Everyone!

I thought about things and realized that I am probably going about things wrong with this model so I been in talks with airflow on advise for how to approach things better. I swear that guy should start charging me...LOL.

Anyways, I'm stuck working days and nights (away from my Maya computer) until monday. I don't get home until 11:30pm but I'll try to work on it a couple hours tonight and tomorrow. So if I don't update much until monday you understand...

Thanks Everybody!

06 June 2007, 06:39 PM
nice start dude, doing these comp is a great way to leanr and the deadline should hopefully keep you motivated to finish the image

06 June 2007, 07:30 AM
John that's a cool idea, I have a great ref pic if you need it...:bounce:

06 June 2007, 05:06 PM

Hope it helps....

06 June 2007, 05:11 PM
thanks eddie, buckie and airflow!

Yes buckie, refs would be excellent! Send them to the usual address : )

Airflow -

Eddie, lets just hope this looks better then my last embarrasing entry for the 3DW challenge : (

I will update today...

06 June 2007, 04:40 AM
Awaiting updates.

06 June 2007, 04:43 AM
I'm working on it right now. I'll probably pm you with a question in about 20 mins...

06 June 2007, 07:37 AM
ok, thanks to 3D Jedi Master Airflow I have now learned how to poly cut these frozen pants. I don't have ZBrush or Mudbox and a bump map would take all the fun out of it I guess so sorry that it took so long. Now that I know what I'm doing its going alot faster and I'll have Han finished in no time hopefully : )

So here is his first pantleg that I've done... (don't worry. I'll have more quickly tomorrow night) (
Smoothed Version: (
Crits and comments always welcomed...

(ps. I'm starting at the bottom left pantleg and working my way up. Still a little bit to fix on that leg but all in due time I guess...)

06 June 2007, 09:33 AM
That was a long 20 min mate ..:applause:

Nice wrinkles, still 2 weeks or so to go. you'll surely get there ..

06 June 2007, 07:45 PM
Thanks sim. 2 Weeks? Crap!...LOL. (
Had a little time before work... now I'm late : (

06 June 2007, 08:06 PM
Coming along nicely.

06 June 2007, 08:36 PM
Good going... See I told ya it would work well...

06 June 2007, 07:10 AM
Thanks boone. Yeah Airflow... you were right

Wish I had a sculpting app though... (
These updates don't look like much but man... you would think it would be easier to make clothes look messy like that...LOL. What a freakin nightmare.

Still some refining to do but I think I've got most of it done. Stil needs a bump map though...

Any crits?
(surely there is plenty... feel free to speak up people)

Looking at that screenshot, I see I need to make his fingers a tiny bit fatter. Maybe it was the smoothing...

06 June 2007, 08:40 AM
couple more shots... (wires before smoothing and angled view shaded and smoothed) ( (
Once I am finished with the body and block I will make some renders. Until then its just plain screenshots because I don't have the spare time... sorry.

06 June 2007, 01:16 PM
Looking cool! :) The only crit right now would be his neck. It looks like it's made of cloth instead of... Neck. :P Good luck with this!

06 June 2007, 04:31 PM
Thanks eRK! I agree about the screenshots of the neck. To be honest i was having a bit of a hard time with that and thought it might shape easier and better once I add the head and ice slab so I have some kind of direction on how far out to bring it and a place to tie in the loose ends... (sorry for the runnon sentance...LOL)

I'll try and fix it on my next update. Thanks!

06 June 2007, 06:57 AM
hey john looking good  sorry no crit except the neck area that erk mentioned... looks alright from the front but the side view looks odd... Ooo also maybe you can define the line between his shirt and his chest more? from the side view you can see some depth but from the front it looks like it could be another wrinkle... it could be something as simple as selecting the edges between the two and setting the normal to a bit harder... just a suggestion =) its coming along really nicely tho can't wait to see the rest :scream:

06 June 2007, 07:27 AM
Keep going mate: Once the face is done you'll have pretty much cracked it.

06 June 2007, 08:26 AM

 Thanks for bringing that out. I didn't notice it but yeah... I see what you mean. I'll try and fix it with the next update : )

I have started on the face. It took me an hour or two just to figure out the correct (or what I hope to be correct) angle etc based off the image I have and the one airflow gave me.

I should have another update tomorrow with the head.

Thanks alot Whyst, Boone, The eRK and all for watching my thread and helping crit on my model. It truley helps to have support

06 June 2007, 10:56 PM
still hoping to update some time soon. I've had a heck of a time with the head. I did the horrible mistake of (airflow, close your ears...LOL) adding way to much topology at first so I couldn't really work with it and then refusing to trash it and start over. If I started over I probably would have been done by now but I was too stubborn after spending so much time on it.

I can't let it win...LOL.

Anyways, I'm stuck at work for a few more hours then I hope to get a bunch of time to work on it so I can update around midnight tonight or tomorrow morning.

07 July 2007, 06:40 PM
Ok, well... I've had alot of stuff to keep up with unfortunatly with wife pregnancy issues, trying to get things ready for the new family addition and running out of time etc so unfortunatly (odviously at this point) I will not be able to finish a scene for this challenge. I was really hoping to at least get this one model done but now I'm running out of time to do that. But I will keep updating over the next couple days and when its appropriate I'll move it to the WIP area or whatever roberto wants me to do with it while I finish.

I still have all the prior crits to fix on the body and stuff but this is the head I've been toying with. I'm having a pain of a time with the stupid teath so they are not shown yet and I still have to figure out what to do with the hair (ideas are welcomed). I'm trying to get this as accurate as possible so I still have a bit of reshaping to do odviously but I think in general its heading in the right direction. What do you think? (
It will surely look closer to the picture once I duplicate the other half, merge them and then adjust the other half so its not the same (matches the reference). Then when hair and teeth are added also...

I also still need to model the thing coming out of his mouth (rope?) down the side of his face also...

***added again***
I see his nose holes need work too...LOL.

07 July 2007, 06:52 PM
Mate, looks marvelous.. Too bad you cant finish in time, would have been a contender...
Best bit of your you have done yet...
Need any advice you know who to call.... "Were ready to belive you!!"

07 July 2007, 06:54 PM

Don't worry. I was planning on hitting you with a PM but I was holding off as long as possible so you had time to focus on your project

07 July 2007, 07:17 PM
aw that's a pity it was coming along really nicely... i'll def continue following this one tho after the competition ends so keep us updated =) and congrats on the baby!

I'll move it over to the WIP area as soon as possible.

Thanks for the congrats and support. I wish I had more time but I definatly learned alot and had fun in this challenge from what I did get done (thanks to airflow taking so much time away from his entry to help me). My wife keeps having early contractions (27 weeks) so I keep having to drive to the hospital to spend my days there while they monitor her and do testing. I was planning on painting the baby room etc after the challenge but now we are so worried of it coming early that I needed to get that done first also. Things just weren't on my side with this challenge... (just giving redrepublic more excuses to quote :p)

Anyways I'm off to keep hitting my refresh button for all the awesome finished images coming through...

07 July 2007, 08:51 AM
I've updated and moved to the WIP area. I only had time to work on the head but hopefully in the next update I can fix those crits : )
