Oh well, think is about time to enter my first challenge.
My little story goes like this: a guy (frustrated Clark Kent) walks down this street and spots this woman being attacked screaming like hell, on the background is a phone box that he rushes to get changed into his super hero costume, but the box door is jammed, he tries with all his strength to get the door open but the only thing he achieves is to drop the all phone box over him and be completely smashed upÖ the end!
Some sort of a storyboard will fallow soon.
Forgot to mention that Iíll be using one of the free models kindly supplied by you guys, thanks a lot thatís all I can say.
Here's our man (http://www.bunchdesign.com/cgtalk/s-man.jpg)
still gotta do a bit of work but is pretty much there, gotta get on with the storyboard and some animation tests.
03 March 2003, 05:53 PM
good model looks fun :)
03 March 2003, 04:21 AM
looks like Bernard from Maniac Mansion/Day of the Tentacle...
03 March 2003, 01:05 PM
Whooohooo! man this will be awsome!
03 March 2003, 05:13 PM
...and here's the storyboard (http://www.bunchdesign.com/cgtalk/storyboard.jpg) , not much to it but the story is so simple that there's no point of wasting time making a super storyboard..
Guess now I better get on with what matters...animating..
will be back soon!
03 March 2003, 09:18 PM
Looks like a great start, Gru, I'll be following you. :)
Can I ask what software you're using?
03 March 2003, 09:39 PM
as for software I'll be using Max 5.1 and Character Studio 4, is my first project using CS4, so i'm still trying to figure out some bits, I specially wanna experiment with the animation mixer feature, I'll still be animatin all by hand (no bip files or mocap), only gonna use it to overlay some secondary motion bits.
03 March 2003, 12:17 AM
love the model, he's got heaps of character
03 March 2003, 01:49 AM
First walk test (http://www.bunchdesign.com/cgtalk/walk01.mov)
where is my first animation test, a double bounce walk that will lead to the action.
comments most welcome..
03 March 2003, 02:03 AM
Shoot that walk is so awesome your going to put my challenge to shame!
03 March 2003, 02:40 AM
Cheers M Poly,
I have to thank Mr Richard Williams for is fantastic book that never leaves my desk..is defenitly the animators survival kit.
03 March 2003, 07:32 AM
hey looking good,
btw, i checked out your site, what program did they use to do the liquid simulations (sure you been asked that b4 hehe).
03 March 2003, 02:34 AM
Thanks Srich, ye you rite, we heard that question many times b4...and the answer is: Realflow and they were done by two cgtalk members, Atomiser and Enay.
Well time for a little update...
Walk test 02 (http://www.bunchdesign.com/cgtalk/walk02.mov)
the rite hand on the first bit is looking a bit strange, will look into it next time, comments welcome. cheers
03 March 2003, 11:22 AM
uh that model was never supposed to be meshsmoothed
its midpoly and becauseof all the tri's not smoothable
but if you keep the camera that far away, i guess no one will the the bad smoothing :D
03 March 2003, 02:44 PM
Cheers Neox and thanks for the model as well (guess its yours, right?), will follow yo advise and not use meshsmooth, will probably look better...
03 March 2003, 02:50 PM
yeah its mine ;)
the only problem i see is, that its not "closeupable" even with meshsmooth, because it wasn't meant to get smoothed, maybe i find the time and make him smoothable for you, but i don't know yet have a lot to do till E3 :/
03 March 2003, 03:26 PM
Cheers dude that would be grand...but dont compromise any of your work cos of that...is just that am not a modeller at all (well you can see for my atempt to give the guy a mouth :) ) and any changes that i may try to do will just destroy him altogether and that will be the job of the phone box...
looks cool as it is anyway.
03 March 2003, 01:26 PM
Hey all here is a little update of the clip with soung fx (http://www.bunchdesign.com/cgtalk/walk03sound.mov) , just to give a flavour of the final thingy..
03 March 2003, 01:51 PM
haha, very funny. I love the music, great choice. Although I'm not sure we're allowed to add sound fx.
The walkcycle looks ok, but I don't understand what he's doing with his right hand all the time. Snapping his fingers maybe? it's not very clear I think. In the moment in which he stops and then starts running towards the telephone box, the different poses are too noticeable, and a bit too stiff. I also think he doesn't seem to make a big effort when he tries to open the door.
And the audio clip should sound louder. I can hardly hear it with the music and all.
Apart from that, I think it looks nice, great idea.
03 March 2003, 03:55 PM
it looks very good.
But, your delivery of the dialogue is kind of rushed. I think you need to stop the character, have him deliver the line, then go to the phone box.
This is where editing your story boards to your sound can be really helpfull.
I really like your animation though.
I look forward to seeing how your shot progresses.
03 March 2003, 05:02 PM
Thanks a lot for your comments guys. most apreciated.
I defenitly agree that there are some timing issues, i feel that i rushed into doing quite a bit of the animation and not taking care of the timing and key moments of the action.
Yep Frinsklen, that wiered movement of the right hand is doing my head as well, its meant to be a finger snapping movement, the problem is that the proportion of the upper arm and forearm are like 4 to 1, which gives the character a interesting funny look but's a pain to animate, same goes with the legs..but i very much like him as it is so i'll have to get around the problem and animate him as it is. As for the pulling of the door, it will get much more strong afterwards when he puts his two legs up and pulls like mad till the all thing falls all over him.
think i'll go back and redo the all thing from the moment he hears the scream and try get the timming and action rite.
as for the sounds that was me just doing something very quikly as i just downloaded the voice last nite.
Anyways, thanks a lot for all the feedback.
hasta la vista
03 March 2003, 10:31 AM
Well in the end i decided to go back and start from scratch, wasnt happy with the first walk and the deadline is still a good 36 days away so why not experiment and waste some time on the way. Here's the new walk test (http://www.bunchdesign.com/cgtalk/walk04.mov), let me know what you think/sugestions/critics etc
03 March 2003, 07:41 PM
i like the arms better this time around, they have better weight. do you use the trax editor at all when you do walk animations or do you just keyframe straightforward? :airguitar
03 March 2003, 10:00 PM
yep thats all keyframe animation, I'm using Max, guess the Trax is something to do with Maya, probably something like the Max Footsteps, but it only creates simple walk cycles, wouldnt work for a double bounce for exemple.
03 March 2003, 12:19 PM
Time for a new little update, I'm quite happy up to the point that he deliever his line, but not so sure about the transition from the standing to the run bit, would very much apreciate your comments on that.
...and here is the clip (http://www.bunchdesign.com/cgtalk/walk05.mov) (350k)
03 March 2003, 01:37 PM
Time for a little update (http://www.bunchdesign.com/cgtalk/walk05a.mov) , not much this time, only a bit of interaction with the phone booth, next step will be to get him quite enraged and get him to pull even stronger using both feet on the door...C&C welcome!
03 March 2003, 06:57 PM
awesoem keep it going!
04 April 2003, 10:14 AM
Cheers Mangled Poly, i'll keep it going now, been a bit busy lately.
New animation update (http://www.bunchdesign.com/cgtalk/walk06.mov) and first look of the background (http://www.bunchdesign.com/cgtalk/cgtalk.jpg) .
as you can see the animation is pretty much done, just a few tweeks here and there and the background needs proper texturing on the building and sidewalk.
I would apreciate some comments b4 I get on with the final rendering.
04 April 2003, 12:27 AM
Well it made me laugh!! Great funny short! I haven't read your whole thread, but I'd suggest trying to get a little more fluidity in his expressions. Great work!
04 April 2003, 06:08 PM
yes, I agree on that, specially when he delivers the line needs a bit more emotion, but on other hand the voice is a bit emotionless which doesnt help either, would have prefered to do the sound myself and give it a bit more punch...but then, thats why they call it a challange...
04 April 2003, 04:27 PM
I guess this will be 1 of my last updates b4 pressing the render botton.. I'm fairly happy with the animation but any sugestions will be very welcome. I'm also updating the image of the the almost finished background.
The movie (http://www.bunchdesign.com/cgtalk/walk06b.mov) and the background (http://www.bunchdesign.com/cgtalk/cgback.jpeg)
04 April 2003, 04:27 AM
Nice modeling! Maybe I should just use your phone booth for my animation! :scream: (just kidding).
Nice models... I see you've got all the rough animations in there. All you need to do is to refine it a bit. For example...
1) Loosen up the arm a bit (successive break in joint).
2) Have the arm go straight up at the impact rather than half a second later.
3) Slight jerks in the footsteps.
4) Hat still seemed a bit too heavy (fallen too quickly).
4) I don't think this is possible, but I think the elbow is slightly too high... but I guess it's too late to change it now since you've done the rigging.
However I guess this is only your rough animation and you've probably is currently working on these right now. Good luck! I look forward to see your next post. :scream:
04 April 2003, 08:09 PM
whoooo! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: thats ubercool what program did you use! ????,
my only comment is I think the backround should be cartoony, mayby cutouts of buildings that kinda thing
:buttrock: :applause:
04 April 2003, 06:47 AM
Looks great so far.
Only one crit.
For a more comical appeal you should have the phone booth flatten him compleetly. SQUISH!!
Thats the only thing missing!
Animation looks good. though I agree with Chepe on points 1 and 3. Those in my mind stick out the most.
Back ground looks great.
04 April 2003, 12:04 PM
Cheers guys thanks a lot for all your comments and critics, thats the kind of stuff one apreciates and helps improving.
I've tried to fix those break joints and jerky steps by playing with the curves a bit, although seems like the size of the upper arm is playing against me and is being really hard to fix those breaking joints on the bit hes pulling the door, so i may have to let it go like that, the walk seems a bit smoother now tho.. that arm going up still looks a bit weird and seems delayed, although it only goes up as the box rolls over and falls on hes arm, may not be to clear tho..
New update (http://www.bunchdesign.com/cgtalk/walk08.mov)
Cheers and good luck for u all and have a nice Easter break!
04 April 2003, 02:17 AM
wow. looks really good. That last arm raise still seems like there is a problem. maybe have it bounce from the initial fall and hang in air till side of booth rolls onto it. then let it drop.
Seems like it is kind of abrupt the way it pops up.
Otherwise it is really good.
04 April 2003, 10:57 AM
Ye u guys r rite, gotta fix that arm at the end is bothering me very much, as well.
Also we'll have a go (if I have time) at flaten him completly when the box falls on him.
Oh one thing I forgot to mention... I cant take credit for the modelling, the character belongs to Neox and most of the background came from turbosquid I only did the texturing... I'm very lazy when it comes to modelling and not one of my strenghts anyway.
04 April 2003, 08:31 PM
Looks good. I like what you've done with the music and sound fx.
I find strage the fact that he's running towards the telephone box and talking at the same time. Dunno if it's late for this, but I would have him standing while saying the entire line, and then running.
I would also suggest to suddenly cut the music when the phone box falls on him, you know what I mean.
The walk looks nice. Once he stops, he looks a bit too stiff, mainly because you didn't animate the body. Maybe some up and down movement on the hips to accentuate the most important words like "now" and "show".
04 April 2003, 01:07 PM
I agree to the music at the end. As an alternative you could let the music get sloooooowwwww, when he fails, know what I mean ;)
And the "suprise" looks weird to me. When the girl is screaming he just rotates his head. And very slowly. It doesn't look dynamic or suprised though.
Great work so far
04 April 2003, 01:54 PM
Once again thanks a lot for your C&C, they're always very helpful when u work for a long time on something, one stops seeing small things that in the end make a big diference. Thanks a lot.
Frinsklen- I agree with you that it may have looked better having him delivering the line and then run into the box, but for a question of time i thought taht would be the best way of squeezing the all action within the 15 sec limit.
Fallowed your advised and cut ed the sound at the end and also had a go at animating the body as he delivers the lines... dunno if was that what you meant.
Milho- his reaction seems to be a bit more espontaneos now but am not quite happy yet, will try to get it right on the next update.
Thats all for now, deadline's apraoching so i better get on with it as the final rendering will take me some 3 days to complete on my out of fashion P3...
The new update (http://www.bunchdesign.com/cgtalk/walk09.mov) - about 950k
04 April 2003, 05:04 PM
Gru, that looks great!
04 April 2003, 01:24 AM
ROFL, the attitude of this character is hillarious. He seems like such dope but has the nerve to walk around like a little bad ass...too bad he doenst get to change into his little undie outfit :scream:
Great job and the animation is really cool.
04 April 2003, 06:04 AM
Wow looks great.
04 April 2003, 10:39 AM
:) Thanks a lot you guys, really apreciated.
