View Full Version : HMC9: Asajj Ventress

06 June 2007, 07:17 AM
Alright, so I'm starting a little late, which will make finishing this a little tougher, but here goes..

I will be making Asajj Ventress, a dark apprentice of the dark side of the force, never a true sith, but a very powerful and dangerous weapon of the Sith.
Asajj was introduced in the animated shorts Star Wars : Clone Wars, where she was Count Dooku's puppet assassin who is sent to set a trap on young Anakin. After successfully luring Anakin to the planet Yavin 4, where an epic light sabre battle takes place, the dark assassin falls to Anakins unleashed anger and rage. A successful mission for the Sith none the less. =)

Interesting enough, the Ventress was first a concept to be a Sith Lord in Episode II : Attack of the Clones, never appearing in the film, I'm glad she was brought back into the Star Wars Universe in Clone Wars as one of the most interesting students of the force.

Thats really great - would be nice to see her as if she would be in one of the films, for a change. The Art of Ep2 is a wonderful book - usually to hand for whenever I need a fix.

good luck manny

06 June 2007, 07:55 PM
fantastic i wish i would have thought of her.

06 June 2007, 08:19 PM
Id suggest you pick an actress and pretend she was cast as the character, then model her up to look like a sith, even maybey have her appear somwhere that we have seen grievous or dooku.

06 June 2007, 05:01 AM
Here's some nerd trivia for you: This character was originally intended to be Darth Maul, but they went back to the drawing board and came up with the Darth Maul we all know and love. But they liked the original design so much they kept it as Asajj Ventress :D

06 June 2007, 10:27 AM
glad to see someone doing her...good luck

06 June 2007, 09:14 PM
glad to see you here Manny~
she is an awsome character, I can't wait to see her done by you.. good luck ~

06 June 2007, 03:17 PM
good luck for this character, this is a great idea, want to see the continuation!

06 June 2007, 10:09 PM
Picking an actress is a great idea, will defenetly help the entry out in the contest, good call Airflow. ;)
I think I've norrowed down my actress choice. However I will be staying away from real famous faces, I want to keep the interest on the character than on the actress.
Starting the mesh today finally, will post progess shots when i got a good base going.

Hey Rjays, you should join the competition man, kick some butt!! =)

06 June 2007, 02:58 PM
If i may:
'SKIN' Aka Deborah Anne Dyer from the (now defunct) Skunk Anansie. There is a lot of her in that concept.
Hope that helped.

06 June 2007, 05:47 PM
cool choice I like this character =) can't wait to see what you do with it and good luck!

06 June 2007, 11:16 AM
I chose to cast Olive Levi as my Asajj Ventress, her bone structure seemed to fit very well with the concept art I gathered and with what I pictured her loolikg like in my mind.
(She played Senator Fema Baab in Ep III)
(t hanks for the suggestion for the actress, but I had already chosen OL ;) )

Here is my scene setup, I like to place lots of concept art behind on my scene so I can have quick glampses at them as I work on my model. I find it helps develop ideas as well and push the mesh further.

I used a side and an off-front shot of the actress as guides for my head mesh, which I moved in place so it would match the pose of the other ref I chose to use:

With the blockout of Olive's head mesh, I did a comparison test to see how accurate I got to the actress by rotating my head and eyeballing the angle, taking a screen capture, and throwing it on top of my off-front reference picture of the actress.
(Since I didn't have a straight front shot of her, this technique was necesary to make sure I had her proportions as accurate as possible.)
I'm pretty happy with how it came out so I can now move on to blocking out the body, I will come back to the head later on and detail it some more. (eyebrows/fix ears/etc..)

06 June 2007, 11:19 AM
Very good choice of reference there, mate.

06 June 2007, 03:38 PM
The faceted view is a really interesting way to compare the model to the reference. May have to try that sometime. Looking great so far, just need to give that soft face a hard edge now.

06 June 2007, 07:59 PM
Great choice! She's looking really good so far. I remember flipping through the art of episode 2 book when I first got it thinking she was a very cool character. I was pleasantly surprised when she turned up in the clone wars cartoon. They really should've used her instead of Dooku as the main villain in episode 2, if nothing else she got a much cooler sounding name...Can't wait to see her finished

06 June 2007, 08:33 PM
Agreed. I was never sold on the Dooku character until the Clone Wars cartoon, and the idea of a Sith Countess would have been rather cool. Missed oppertunity there...

But this work is coming along very well indeed, and shall be keeping tabs...

06 June 2007, 08:45 PM
This is looking soo awsome. Really looking forward to seeing more of this.

06 June 2007, 10:03 AM
Torso block out,
... not a huge update, but all I had time to do tonight. =P

There are many versions of the Ventresse's neck cover, some which cover the whole shoulder, some which end a few rings past the neck (clone wars version). I'm leaning towards this half medium version, kinda gives her a bit more balance in her outfit contrast I find.
(ps- I would have loved to see her as Dooku's right hand in Ep II, Jango didn't quite made it..)

06 June 2007, 10:24 AM
Hmmmm...keep going with it.:)

06 June 2007, 10:44 AM
Love it! Especieally the face looks great!

06 June 2007, 11:13 AM
looking sweet. she was an ace character, model looks like its going to convery that nicely. she had some awesome sabres as well i think. will be keeping my eye on this one, should be sweet :)

06 June 2007, 10:03 PM
Excellent stuff.....gorgeous actress, I might add.

06 June 2007, 10:22 AM
Ended up making a second version with the neck brace ending before the shoulders, still not sure which I will keep at the end..
Little more work done on the front shirt and slaped on some placeholder eyebrows and poly tattoos on her face which will be replaced by textures later on ofcrouse.
Next up,I will detail the neck brace that will consist of a thin leather strap going all the way around with some messy overlaps. (not the clean version)

06 June 2007, 11:45 AM
I really like what you're doing with this character. The first neck piece looks alot better and acents the long neck and shoulder line.

06 June 2007, 01:46 PM
Indeed an interesting student of the Force. And loved her in Clone Wars but this concept yout've commited yourself to is looking really good.

I'll be monitoring this with great interest!:)

06 June 2007, 05:13 PM
Shes coming along really well.

06 June 2007, 06:18 PM
Excellent progress! Obviously, the Force is with you!

06 June 2007, 06:32 PM
wow looks great so far

06 June 2007, 08:02 PM
Is looking interesting, I hope you have time to finish, I hope I do too.... :)

06 June 2007, 05:20 AM
Wow, that is really great modeling. There's some awesome poses you could do with that character.

06 June 2007, 12:04 PM
woww great start your mod. is pretty cool, i don't remind this character but she looks good, good continuation!

06 June 2007, 09:16 PM
I've had my eye on this thread. Great Job! Really smooth modeling!

Looking forward to more updates :bounce:

06 June 2007, 10:46 AM
First pass on the neck straps, will come back to them later with a clip near the top and some mudbox detail on them maybe.
Also a very rough first pass on the arm bandages, will be adjusting their thickness and form around the body. Then do the same to her sides and back..
Thanks for the kind words. =)

06 June 2007, 12:51 PM
Looks nice those bandages. I think she is coming along quite well.

06 June 2007, 01:34 PM
This is looking really nice, the face is especially well done. Keep up the good work.

06 June 2007, 01:35 PM
Very impressive. :)

06 June 2007, 05:34 PM
Beautiful work! I especially like how you handled the bandages. Care to share your technique?

06 June 2007, 05:48 PM

His website might not be working, but beware....its the calm before the storm. I think, all of us will be in for a big surprise, when he posts his next update.

Agreed, agreed!

06 June 2007, 03:03 PM
Either he's working real hard, getting ready to blow everyone out of this contest, OR he's currently hiding in a tiny loft with his laptop, wondering whether he should try turn on the WIFI. but at the same time trying to desperately avoid the authorities, who have issued him an urgent arrest and search warrant, on the grounds of GRAND embezzlement, first degree murder, arson and armed robbery. Whatever happens, you'll always be in our hearts, Manny.

Sorry for the loooong delay on responding.. work kept me busy as hell..then my site went missing.. Only got to work on ventress 6 times all togather =(
Didnt evn have time for a decent render, so I posted up viewport captures. laaaaame i know..
Thanks for the concern Yav, lol.. much appreciated, hehehe
Ill be continuing working on this model in my spare time till shes textured, mudboxed, riged and posed for a neat little poster render, I'll move to the WIP section when I got some more updates pass the stuff posted for the contest.
ps-Ill also post the steps I went through on the bandages soon man.. i need some sleep now ;)

07 July 2007, 01:06 PM
one word left , beautiful

07 July 2007, 01:42 PM
That is really nice. I like it very much indeed.

07 July 2007, 06:30 PM
to be honest I'm still trying too zoom my eyes in far enough to see how on earth you modeled this character on the chest, arms and back bandages/straps. I honestly wish I knew how you are doing this and controling the thickness and overlaps. Its mind numbing IMO, is there a shortcut I don't know about....LOL. I REALLY Love the fact that you did it via modeling instead of zbrush or mud.

Excellent Job!

07 July 2007, 07:47 PM
Yeah, those bandages are pretty sick, although the viewport previews on an animation with this model would be something like 2 fps...that's about the only pathetic thing I can cling on, when desperatly trying to find a flaw in this work ;)

07 July 2007, 08:23 PM
"Yav Its OVER The-.. ahhh you missed it, s'gone now.. Was a big flaw too!"
Beautiful work my friend, I just wanna see them sabres aglow...

07 July 2007, 09:42 PM
Underlying emotion bubbling away there, a superflous work of art with a capital A.

Can I take her home please ? :)

07 July 2007, 09:24 AM
Great model. So much potential in this character waiting to be dug out. Please finish this when you have the time

07 July 2007, 11:28 AM
cant wait to see a beauty render with this model... or an animation? :))
