View Full Version : Whoops! - Hero/Villain/Robot - Ila Solomon

03-18-2003, 01:05 AM
Ok, let me try this one this time.
I came up with some Idea, I want the overall looks like the 60' b-movies & TV series.
I drew some sketches, I tried to keep the characters simple, & will make them very low-poly with no SubD or Smoothing, just like game models
The hero is someone with ELECTRICAL superpower, & the villain is a mad scientist (yes, very classic! but I like that), the mad has a servant, that is a giant iron robot! hehe!...ok, the full story later, now the sketches: copy.jpghttp:// copy.jpghttp:// copy.jpg

& here are the latest updates:

here are the finals:

GOOD: The Original Scene: coming soon
BAD: the 640x480 DivX Avi (~5mb) : DOWNLOAD (
UGLY: the 320x240 QT (~4.5 mb) : DOWNLOAD (

cheers!

okay... thats it than... if u're in than there is only second place :)

03-19-2003, 09:14 AM
Thank you very much friends...  :D
well, I've a doubt that I can fit the sequence with 3 characters into 15 seconds of action, but I try...probably very fast storytelling: (very brief)
the idea is when the hero wants to use his electircal super power against the mad scientist, the robot come in, hero surprises, when the robot starts to attack, suddenly his batteries goes empty, discharged!...then hero starts his attack & shoots the sparks & electricity toward the mad, but unfortunatly the electrical stream hits the robot & make the batteries super-recharged ! now it's the robot's turn to hit the hero, very badly!

03-19-2003, 11:04 AM
Very fun concepts ila...................I look forward to this very much. With your talent it should be one to check on often.

All the sketchs are spot on top notch. All with the potential to the skies.Have fun and good luck my friend.

ok, now, some updates. I finished the robot model, quick rigging & a temp texture, almost ready: (total 4115 polygons)

03-24-2003, 12:32 AM
;) great.. hey Ila I'll be waiting to see some anim here..
promising so far.. I like sketches:) gonna switch to
Maya for animation? keep up man ..:)

03-24-2003, 08:09 AM
HI mandrake, thanx for the support :)
hey, in my experience, I think animating in MAX is easier than MAYA! ;) (just think about the joint's pivot things or handling things in curve editor window!! :D) but I should give it another try...

03-24-2003, 11:13 PM
:) hehe, yes sure, but now I think rigging in max is harder! :P LOL!

new updates: robot finished! (less than 4000 polygons, in less than 3 days)

How I hate those poly restictions...................But How I love what you have done with them here Ila.............very well done.I look forward to your progress.

Virtuoso, :D
M-H, glad to see you on board finally

ok, I did a quick anim test, it's not so perfect, even good, just a warming up, for testing the abilities. so forgive the crap motions & quality! :) ...

roboAnimTEST1.0+ (divx v3.03) (

If i get enough feedbacks I may share the scene file itself! :)

03-25-2003, 11:45 PM
I don't know if we're suppossed to crit that test. Anyway... you know that I won't pass up the oportunity...
I think it looks good, just animate the hands and the feet (maybe a step back when he turns around) so he doesn't look too stiff.
The robot model is beautiful, as well designed as simple. I love it.

I thought textures were not allowed, but I checked the rules again and it doesn't say anything about that...

03-26-2003, 05:33 AM
Nice. It's already got a good personality in the design and I like the way the IK movement brings the 'organic' out.

Excellent stuff ila, love your work, this one is turning out great:thumbsup:

03-26-2003, 10:57 PM
Thanx shoey :)

ok, now time for showing some storyboard sketches:
as you can see I deleted the Sparx (superhero) shots due to challenge limit of camera I'll make this one-take shot. that is about 15 sec itself.

03-26-2003, 11:30 PM
:bounce: :wavey: Hey Ila...good story and cool robot there...what happened with CSforMaya0.9 ...u didn't like it ??? 'cuase i read somewhere that u are animating the guy in Max...

03-26-2003, 11:56 PM
yeah, MAX... :) u know I'm originaly a MAXer ... I don't like FAKEs! :P
jokin, btw, I missed max so much, so i decided to do something with max again, sort of HOME-SICKING!
Maya is great too. I can't prefer one to another in general. but now I'm much faster in max.

03-27-2003, 12:01 AM
 I know what u mean when u say that you missed your Max...i have this feeling too sometimes (...good old Max days:love: )...anyway ...It's the artist that gives value to the tools not the tools to the artist, have fun !!!

03-27-2003, 02:26 AM
:surprised I haven't checked out the anim challenge in a while and I come back ... LOOK! LOOK what you've done!! It's marvelous! That is one excellent looking robot and the animation is smooth to the 10th degree!

Nice job ila! I'll have to come back and check this more often.

03-27-2003, 05:19 AM

Looking good. Love your sketches!

My Fault
03-27-2003, 06:59 PM
Woowee, looking good so far. In the last animation, when the robot moves his foot he looks a little light still. Maybe try having him shift his weight over to his right foot more before he moves the left foot up and over.

I love the look of the robot and the mechanical way he moves. Great job so far!

03-27-2003, 07:36 PM
wow great stuff.

Cool robot design. Can't wait to see the scientist.

03-28-2003, 08:20 AM
OK !!! Let me see.......
Some one is going to Win the first Prize here !
Nice job az always ila ;)
& about the Animation ,... I think Hand movements are fine , but when the foot moves , the Robot doesn't look heavy enough !
Maybe when he move his foot , it should be faster at the start . and the body come down , and a little shake for secondary motion !
that was just my opinion !
Hey I Love the word "Shatark" in your storyboard ;)
& I hate Divx 5.03 !!!!!!!
I am still using 5.02 for coding !! and 5.03 just to Play, on another OS of my System .....

Good luck!
Reza M.

03-28-2003, 09:17 AM
Kirt, :) thanks a lot friend. that's a warming up for our 'Alienz' you know! ;)
O.Martin & sketchyjay, Thank you very much.

03-29-2003, 10:45 PM
ok ok, this is the last tweak on the roboTest#1, 900K DivX: roboTest01.3+ (

now I go for the mad scientist...

03-30-2003, 12:14 AM
Ila I think it's coming along very well. I like these latest movememnts very much. I was looking for the suttle type movements, like the fingers for example. They showed alot of dexterity, nice and smooth in there movements. It's that kind of extra attention to details that will make it a top notch piece of work.Very well done.

I look forward to the Mad scientist. I just love those crazy zany braniac's. Keep up the extra fine work.

03-30-2003, 02:38 AM
:bounce:  NICEEEEE!!! good details on movement ....can't wait to see more :bounce: :bounce:

03-30-2003, 10:24 PM
Virtuoso & Dimitris, Thanks a lot
well, this is just for 'Proof of working!'

I'm thinking about a name for him, since he looks like me (again!) so maybe Prof. Ilouschkowich wouldn't be bad!

03-30-2003, 10:31 PM

03-31-2003, 02:38 AM
wow...your work is so well done. The robot's animation is excellent. I love the way the spine springs up and then the robot comes to life. Can't wait to see how the scientist move.

03-31-2003, 03:16 AM
damn thats really you!.. you wanna hypnotize us with that face? ..;)

03-31-2003, 08:15 AM
i just can say

good luck to you

03-31-2003, 07:03 PM
Hi Ila,
will be fun to see your progress in animation as I've only seen pictures from you until now.

The last animation is starting to look good. The spine is such a nice detail of that character. It does feel really robotic.
How are your thoughts regarding the robotic movements of him? To me he is moving to smoothly right now, even though you fixed most of it in that last playblast. I would advice you to make him move less smooth more machine like.

:) That scentist face. So fun, I thought it resembled you even before I read the text beneth it. Nice work.

I like these low poly things. I dont know why but they often have more character than the high poly smooth versions. I shouldn't forget mentioning it, that rusty metal texture, me like :).

03-31-2003, 11:22 PM
Hi, so much compliments here for me dudes!...thanx a lot.
Mikael, you are right, I'll give it more robotic style in the main shot. promise! ... & yeap, I'm a low-poly lover too!

03-31-2003, 11:25 PM
hey !!! Nice job !
that's you!!!!!!!!!!
he has a lot of character ! (i am just a little uncomfortable with his name ;) maybe something like ilokowich or ilopo ..... )
sorry .... you have create it ! you will name it ;)
good luck
Reza M.

04-02-2003, 10:38 PM
Thanks -REZA-, but i prefer the first! :D

04-02-2003, 10:39 PM
ok, now the prof.'s head, completed: (maybe I add glasses)

04-02-2003, 10:46 PM
haha, great!!!

In such a simple, low poly model, I really don't think those textures are helping much. I also find the dark area arond the eyes too dark, that's just a thought.

now, now you will show us your powers!!! :D

04-02-2003, 11:12 PM
Oh my god! I've not seen better use of polys, textures, desing and rigging in other model than your robot!!! I really like it! it inspires my a lot! it really works and the animations is impressive! very funny! Just it could jump some screws while he's moving! :applause:

if the evil doctor finish with the same style and quality, this thread will become the best one! :) That's a pity not see any hero there... ;)

04-03-2003, 01:40 PM
I like your low poly moddels verry much, don't give the scientist his glasses he looks good just the way he is, glasses could make him look friendly:cool:

04-03-2003, 11:11 PM
Andres, :p I'll show you, my talented spanish friend! (but the textures are helping much, I think!)
pabbloz, oh dear pabbloz. I'm glad you like it!, my another talented spanish friend! :D Thanx a lot.
Edouard, thank u , I think u r right. I forget about it.

04-08-2003, 12:32 AM
C'mon babies!....

I'm just to rigging him...

Stephen Vyas
04-08-2003, 12:56 AM
Hey, lookin good! I'm interested in seeing what direction you take in making him walk. Right now a picture of a penguin popped into my head, because of his long over-coat :D

04-08-2003, 08:45 AM
hmmm, well...actually he is not supposed to walk, but if I have to, he walks normally, I set the coat deformable. :)

04-08-2003, 10:16 AM
That's the kind of threads I like follow! That's a pity you dont have an update each minute :D

Great style!

04-12-2003, 03:58 PM
 :buttrock: that robot rules!!

04-13-2003, 11:50 PM
Pabbloz & angel-o-polis, CHEERS!

I've a small gift for those who come here visiting my challenge!
the mad prof's rigged/textured mesh: (3ds max 5.1)

. if you see the mesh, feel free to let me know what's your ideas. tell me about the weaknesses, & if you come up with a better result (by tweaking it), share with me & the others.

. every controler that you need to animate is visible, others (not require for animating) are hidden or frozen.

. if you encounter a problem to open the file, set the viewport driver to SOFTWARE then try again.

the robot mesh will come soon in a thread near you!

04-14-2003, 12:15 AM
Ila Solomon,i have to tell you this, you're one of the kindiest guys i've ever seen!
the model looks exellent,im just loving this.
i cant wait to see what will come after Master Soleimani.
please du update quickly :) :buttrock:

04-14-2003, 01:47 AM
That's awfully nice of you!!! Thanks! Now who's gonna convert it for us maya people. :) Really cool characters, the prof's hair is outrageous!! You've done a great job converting your drawings into 3d. I'm really impressed. Can't wait to see the hero!!

04-14-2003, 01:40 PM
thanks a lot friends
Now who's gonna convert it for us maya people
that is coming tonight for you!

04-14-2003, 02:44 PM
Wahooooooooooo!! Thanks pal!:applause:

04-14-2003, 04:18 PM
Wow, great models.

can't wait to see your short.

04-14-2003, 10:45 PM
Ok :) Thanx for the response friends.
Now, the Maya version (4.5) ... I had to rig it again in maya, it took me a full day. & you see that the hair texture cordinate is missing! (sorry, I am tired to fix that, you do!)

As you will see I didn't make the blend shapes (morph targets) yet. they will come soon.

04-15-2003, 10:32 AM
Verry nice model...he looks really evil, succes with the rest of your movie:thumbsup: :applause:

04-15-2003, 09:24 PM
Really cool, from the resemblance to you Ila to the animation you provided earlier, that already showed great promise.I love mad scientists to begin with, they have nothing but potential for fun and crazy antics.

Oh and I love that over exxagerated crazy hair alot as well..............Looking forward to all you can still come up with.Keep up the excellent work..........

04-16-2003, 09:33 AM

04-16-2003, 06:32 PM
Yes....that's incredible......thanks for the conversion!! Can't wait to check out the robot (if you were planning on giving that away too??) and I really can't wait to see this hero. and mostly I really really can't wait to see some animation!!!! hahaha. THanks man! Your too nice.

04-16-2003, 10:58 PM
:) Hi, big thanx
ok, well, I'm a little busy these days, but I hope I finish this challenge. pray for me!
I'll give out the robot's mesh + it's anim test soon (but I'm not sure about maya %100 conversion, coz I wrote some wiring expressions that I'm lazy to re-write them in maya's mel!)
also I plan to publish the final animated scene.

04-19-2003, 12:34 PM
oh... come on ...
You should finish this one !!!!
I'll pray for you ......

I really wish to see you finishing the animation challenge. I pray for you too! :scream:

04-20-2003, 01:43 AM
heh. I dunno why everyone is praying?? .....but I'd like to see you finish this challenge (if that's what they mean). Although if time is an issue then I can understand. Good Luck.

04-22-2003, 12:09 AM
Wow! I'm speechless, now I really HAVE TO finish this before the deadline, fortunately I'v finished my freelanced job tonight! ;)

04-22-2003, 05:28 AM
And people doubt the power of prayer ;)

BTW, Congrats on becoming the Modeling Director for ALIENZ that should be intresting

04-23-2003, 12:02 AM
Ok, before I start the final shot, I place the robot rigged mesh for download, both max & maya version.
But notice that the maya version is a 'max-converted-to-fbx-to-maya' file, so there are some minor & major problems here & there! though I re-rigged & tweakd it again.
Most noticable changes would be the texture cordinates, & reversed rotation axises. remember you have to rotate some parts by GLOBAL axis, instead of LOCAL or GIMBAL. (in maya file, I didn't fix that, yet)
Also their rigging methods are a bit different (from max to maya.) I like the maya rig version more, coz I've set more controls on that.
The max version included the animation test that you saw before.

polyRobo1.max ( (max 5.1)

polyRobo1.1.mb ( (maya 4.5 - NOW ONLINE)

About the MAX file rar :

For some strange reason I get the message from winrar and winzip that the .rar is corrupted and I can't unpack it

Possible a problem with my machine but maybe u could check.

And my question :

Is there a possebility that you would make a tutorial for beginning animators on how to rig a mech or a robot like yours. Because I'm running in a lot of IK setup problems, and so are most of my friends so we can't get any further.

In advance Tnx..

Greetz MaRvI

04-23-2003, 08:48 PM
Possible a problem with my machine but maybe u could check.
In my computer works perfectly. I think you didn't download it completed... :surprised

Ila! this is great! We have complete liberty to see the model and play with it.
It's very inspirational stuff! :) And we learn from each others.

Thanks! Keep animating! :wip:

04-23-2003, 10:42 PM
angel-o-polis, :) you are welcome.
MaRvI, hmmm, ok..., though there are some very good & easy-learn rigging tut online, I'll try mine!
pabbloz, O' brother, you know you are my inspiration too!
I wish I had more time to spend on rigging those models, they are not perfect, yet. but enough for easy animating.

& here it comes an attraction poster: :)

04-23-2003, 10:48 PM
Very cool as usual Ila. Awesome models and design.

04-23-2003, 11:10 PM
WOW!! Impressive! too cool!

now let's recap. We've got a cool robot model, a cool professor model... there's 6 days before the deadline... and we have no animation at all!!!!
I mean, how many times do the rules say: "focus on animation!!, no top notch models and textures, please!!"

Anyway, since this is coming alon so beautifully, promise me you'll finish this, before or after the deadline, I don't care.

04-23-2003, 11:18 PM
Wow Ila! You got even a film poster!

I see very nice the composition. Very nice colors. But maybe you can change a bit the format,... you know, more "poster" size :)

But two comments!:
- Maybe the doctor would need dark eyelids... His eyes could be more expressive and maybe he would become more "laboratory doctor" hehe ;)
- and... what have you done on the Robot's textures!? :D They are really big now! I liked more in previous render (look first image on page 2 (

Hope the next update comes soon! :wip:

P.S.: I'm very glad you like my work!

04-23-2003, 11:19 PM
:D LOL! I promise, I promise.
but I must assume that I've spent total less than a week for modeling/texturing/rigging, so I can say it's not bad @all, YET!

04-23-2003, 11:21 PM
Hehe Frinsklen! you're right! :D

But I see the robot animation already really awesome! Maybe Ila wants add the doctor behind him and using a control panel to move it!

04-24-2003, 12:07 AM
Tnx for your reply and I'm looking forward to your tutorial..

About the doctor, he doesn't strikes me as a mad scientist... But maybe that's just the face and the pose at the moment... I think you could make him look like a freak by making his pupils etc. smallen so his eyes look much bigger and some red on the outside to make him look like he has been working for days with no sleep. Eyes tell alot about people :) ... Ooh and a big dirty cup of coffee would be very cool :D

Oh and I really like your last pic. ... It's almost like a new game is comming up, and this is a advertisement for it ... :buttrock:

MaRvI, thank you for your comments, I take care.

now, @first, comes the facial animation:
download TEST 2 - FACIAL ( (rar/mov/3sec.)

& later, I'll correct that bad eyebrow movement in the begining!

04-25-2003, 12:19 AM
Looks like phoneme shapes hit position few frames later.. ofset
sound 4-5 frames foward and see if its better.. I'll be inpatiently
waiting for final anim bud :)

04-25-2003, 08:23 AM
hmmm, yes, I think sliding 1 or 2 frames is enough. thanx pal :)

04-25-2003, 01:11 PM
:bounce: Hi Ila ...just a thought...the last flickering of the left eye...needs maybe in it's total 2-4 frames....i think!!!

04-25-2003, 04:09 PM
wow what a great character.

Here are a few things I noticed.

When he says now it would be stronger if his eyebrows came down a few frames after "Now" instead of in the middle. Try saying it your self. the blink in the middle seems like he has something in his eye. At the end or later is attitude, which is what your after. If you want mad blinks maybe just have one eye twitch like you have at the end to great effect.

the eye blink seems off when he says "my power". Have him close his eyes at the end or middle of "my" and have them open wide on the "P" in "power". The p sound has a build up then pop to it so express it in his face.

I would drop the eye blink in the middle. The dialogue has alot of power to it so the blink is odd in there. Have the blink before or after his dialogue.

rest is great.

keep it up,

can't wait to see the rest

04-25-2003, 06:05 PM

NOW, YOU MUST say to us "where" you find the "time" to spent on your multiple works!!

GREAT.....go ahead!

04-25-2003, 10:27 PM
Dimitris, done!
sketchyjay, thanx a lot, I'll take care.
cutnpaste, ;) :D

ok, I've done part 1, the first 4 seconds: still needs some minor improvments.

part 1 - test 1 (avi/divx/555kb) (

04-25-2003, 10:31 PM

I'm dead looking eye blinking!! ahhaa

04-25-2003, 11:31 PM
once it is combined with the animation it looks better. blinks are fine. The eyes getting wide when he says power could come a few frames earlier but that may be nit picking.

Love the evil eye twitch at the end.

Going to be a really great piece!

wish I had spent more time on texturing mine.

waiting for 2nd part

04-26-2003, 03:06 AM
Could you promise not to enter the next anim challenge? :D

Jeez man, this is awesome...with sooo many people here at CGTALK its hard to pick a favorite because I like so many different aspects of CG and some people are only good at one particualar thing.

But you my friend have a nice all around gift...composition, animation, modeling and texturing...very cool.

Im inspired... just joking about you not entering the next animation challenge. Not having you in any of them would be like Tiger Woods not playing in a Major...just wouldnt be the same.

Good luck and I look forward to this entry.

04-27-2003, 10:44 PM
lol! Kid Mesh, u r so kind, thanx,
sketchyjay,

well, I continued with part two, not finished yet, fingers are not animated, & some minor improvments here & there. & maybe changing some timings & pacings. (walking & hitting will be the next part)

test03_part2 (divx/385Kb) (

04-28-2003, 12:12 PM
Dude cant wait 2 c the final thing, looking grand so far, love that spring effect on its body as it gets up and also the way it turns around. the only thing that doesnt look quite right is the way it gets up, maybe a bit more of a swing on the arms b4 it gets up or even put its hands on the floor to help him standing up...but i guess thats not much time to experiment..great anyways.

04-28-2003, 10:27 PM
Gru :) yup, I'm not totaly happy with any part of this animation, I should tweak, tweak, adjust, modify, retime, change, ..., & have no more time! :) thanx a lot

now the part 1, 2 & 3 (15sec, divx, 1.3 mb) ...

part 1 to 3 (

04-29-2003, 03:08 AM
Considering the amount of time you get for these challenges I think your entry is kick ass. Of course we are all perfectionist and could tweak until the cows came home...but if your being judged on strictly the animation I think that broken down individually each piece is very good.

a) Scientist - Expressions of cockiness and arrogance acheived. Nice face morphs and body movement.

b) Robot - Kinda funny because it seems as if the scientist built him to help take over the world but he doenst seem to function in that capacity at all. And his pre-programming for destruction backfires on the scientist.

I dont think a robot is supposed to move fluidly and this one doesnt, it moves like a robot, it even gives the feeling that it was actually turned on and started with its on board programming.

Like I said, given the time frame this was kick ass, great models, great textures, great anim....only one real crit... maybe its my monitor but it seemed kinda dark.

Other than that....:buttrock:

04-29-2003, 09:18 AM
:) I agree, it looks dark even in my monitor, I wanted to get a TIM BURTONISH TOUCH, but I couldn't! ... :D thank u very much.

04-29-2003, 10:15 PM
Being a fan of "Tim Burtonesque" Style art I cannot see a resemblance.

However what I do see is some very nice animation and overall effort.Strong contender indeed. Not a simple thing to do,but you have Ila,fine, fine job,I applaud your efforts once again.

04-29-2003, 10:29 PM
:bounce: Hi Ila friend i can say only this  :bounce:  ..and this...

Just think something for the Mad professor to do the last seconds in which as the robot goes to him..he stays a little bit frozen!!!...but i am sure u will fix this...:wavey:

04-29-2003, 10:48 PM
he stays a little bit frozen!!!...
:D LOL! just a little bit?
Being a fan of "Tim Burtonesque" Style art I cannot see a resemblance.

05-01-2003, 08:59 AM
Hiya Ila,

Good work, I especially like the animation of the robot. Mechanical and smooth too..if you know what I mean.

My only crit would be the lighting, it is very dark and I found that a little distracting the first time I saw it.

Once again good work.

05-01-2003, 12:44 PM
And you said you wouldn't finish in time... What a great piece. Great expression on the doctor at the end as he punches away at the controls.

has anyone noticed that on the cgchallange site it says contest ends may 4th sunday. But the timer ended yesterday... odd.

great work!

i love your piece, the weight in the character and the robot are so belivable. The sound effect definitely helps too. The only part i feel weird is when the scientist falls back after spinning around. It feels as if his head is suddenly 10 times heavier than when he's spinning, looks a little bit unnatural to me. But overall, GREAT JOB!

btw, anyone know when is the challenge over?? i thought it was over yesterday, but now it said may 4th? does that mean that i've time to go back and tweak my animation?

05-03-2003, 01:51 AM

Hey Ila,
This turned out to be a great entry, was there any doubt?:D
It took awhile to sift through and find the final animation, maybe adding a link to it on your first post might be helpful.
