Ok, let me try this one this time.
I came up with some Idea, I want the overall looks like the 60' b-movies & TV series.
I drew some sketches, I tried to keep the characters simple, & will make them very low-poly with no SubD or Smoothing, just like game models
The hero is someone with ELECTRICAL superpower, & the villain is a mad scientist (yes, very classic! but I like that), the mad has a servant, that is a giant iron robot! hehe!...ok, the full story later, now the sketches: copy.jpghttp:// copy.jpghttp:// copy.jpg

well, I've a doubt that I can fit the sequence with 3 characters into 15 seconds of action, but I try...probably very fast storytelling: (very brief)
the idea is when the hero wants to use his electircal super power against the mad scientist, the robot come in, hero surprises, when the robot starts to attack, suddenly his batteries goes empty, discharged!...then hero starts his attack & shoots the sparks & electricity toward the mad, but unfortunatly the electrical stream hits the robot & make the batteries super-recharged ! now it's the robot's turn to hit the hero, very badly!

hey, in my experience, I think animating in MAX is easier than MAYA! ;) (just think about the joint's pivot things or handling things in curve editor window!! :D) but I should give it another try...

I don't know if we're suppossed to crit that test. Anyway... you know that I won't pass up the oportunity...
I think it looks good, just animate the hands and the feet (maybe a step back when he turns around) so he doesn't look too stiff.
The robot model is beautiful, as well designed as simple. I love it.

I thought textures were not allowed, but I checked the rules again and it doesn't say anything about that...

jokin, btw, I missed max so much, so i decided to do something with max again, sort of HOME-SICKING!
Maya is great too. I can't prefer one to another in general. but now I'm much faster in max.

Woowee, looking good so far. In the last animation, when the robot moves his foot he looks a little light still. Maybe try having him shift his weight over to his right foot more before he moves the left foot up and over.

I love the look of the robot and the mechanical way he moves. Great job so far! :thumbsup:

& about the Animation ,... I think Hand movements are fine , but when the foot moves , the Robot doesn't look heavy enough !
Maybe when he move his foot , it should be faster at the start . and the body come down , and a little shake for secondary motion !
that was just my opinion !

& I hate Divx 5.03 !!!!!!!
I am still using 5.02 for coding !! and 5.03 just to Play, on another OS of my System .....

Ila I think it's coming along very well. I like these latest movememnts very much. I was looking for the suttle type movements,like the fingers for example.They showed alot of dexterity,nice and smooth in there movements. It's that kind of extra attention to details that will make it a top notch piece of work.Very well done.:beer:

Hi Ila,
will be fun to see your progress in animation as I've only seen pictures from you until now.

The last animation is starting to look good. The spine is such a nice detail of that character. It does feel really robotic.
How are your thoughts regarding the robotic movements of him? To me he is moving to smoothly right now, even though you fixed most of it in that last playblast. I would advice you to make him move less smooth more machine like.

:) That scentist face. So fun, I thought it resembled you even before I read the text beneth it. Nice work.

I like these low poly things. I dont know why but they often have more character than the high poly smooth versions. I shouldn't forget mentioning it, that rusty metal texture, me like :).

In such a simple, low poly model, I really don't think those textures are helping much. I also find the dark area arond the eyes too dark, that's just a thought.

Oh my god! I've not seen better use of polys, textures, desing and rigging in other model than your robot!!! I really like it! it inspires my a lot! :thumbsup: it really works and the animations is impressive! very funny! Just it could jump some screws while he's moving! :applause:

the mad prof's rigged/textured mesh: (3ds max 5.1)


. if you see the mesh, feel free to let me know what's your ideas. tell me about the weaknesses, & if you come up with a better result (by tweaking it), share with me & the others.

. every controler that you need to animate is visible, others (not require for animating) are hidden or frozen.

. if you encounter a problem to open the file, set the viewport driver to SOFTWARE then try again.

the robot mesh will come soon in a thread near you!

Ok :) Thanx for the response friends.
Now, the Maya version (4.5) ... I had to rig it again in maya, it took me a full day. & you see that the hair texture cordinate is missing! (sorry, I am tired to fix that, you do!)


As you will see I didn't make the blend shapes (morph targets) yet. they will come soon.

Ok, before I start the final shot, I place the robot rigged mesh for download, both max & maya version.
But notice that the maya version is a 'max-converted-to-fbx-to-maya' file, so there are some minor & major problems here & there! though I re-rigged & tweakd it again.
Most noticable changes would be the texture cordinates, & reversed rotation axises. remember you have to rotate some parts by GLOBAL axis, instead of LOCAL or GIMBAL. (in maya file, I didn't fix that, yet)
Also their rigging methods are a bit different (from max to maya.) I like the maya rig version more, coz I've set more controls on that.
The max version included the animation test that you saw before.

About the MAX file rar :

For some strange reason I get the message from winrar and winzip that the .rar is corrupted and I can't unpack it :shrug:

Possible a problem with my machine but maybe u could check.

And my question :

Is there a possebility that you would make a tutorial for beginning animators on how to rig a mech or a robot like yours. Because I'm running in a lot of IK setup problems, and so are most of my friends so we can't get any further.

WOW!! Impressive! too cool!

now let's recap. We've got a cool robot model, a cool professor model... there's 6 days before the deadline... and we have no animation at all!!!!
I mean, how many times do the rules say: "focus on animation!!, no top notch models and textures, please!!"


Anyway, since this is coming alon so beautifully, promise me you'll finish this, before or after the deadline, I don't care.

Wow Ila! You got even a film poster! :thumbsup:

I see very nice the composition. Very nice colors. But maybe you can change a bit the format,... you know, more "poster" size :)

But two comments!:
- Maybe the doctor would need dark eyelids... His eyes could be more expressive and maybe he would become more "laboratory doctor" hehe ;)
- and... what have you done on the Robot's textures!? :D They are really big now! I liked more in previous render (look first image on page 2 ( :shrug:

About the doctor, he doesn't strikes me as a mad scientist... But maybe that's just the face and the pose at the moment... I think you could make him look like a freak by making his pupils etc. smallen so his eyes look much bigger and some red on the outside to make him look like he has been working for days with no sleep. Eyes tell alot about people :) ... Ooh and a big dirty cup of coffee would be very cool :D

Oh and I really like your last pic. ... It's almost like a new game is comming up, and this is a advertisement for it ... :buttrock:

Looks like phoneme shapes hit position few frames later.. ofset

wow what a great character.

Here are a few things I noticed.

When he says now it would be stronger if his eyebrows came down a few frames after "Now" instead of in the middle. Try saying it your self. the blink in the middle seems like he has something in his eye. At the end or later is attitude, which is what your after. If you want mad blinks maybe just have one eye twitch like you have at the end to great effect.

the eye blink seems off when he says "my power". Have him close his eyes at the end or middle of "my" and have them open wide on the "P" in "power". The p sound has a build up then pop to it so express it in his face.

I would drop the eye blink in the middle. The dialogue has alot of power to it so the blink is odd in there. Have the blink before or after his dialogue.

once it is combined with the animation it looks better. blinks are fine. The eyes getting wide when he says power could come a few frames earlier but that may be nit picking.

Love the evil eye twitch at the end.

Going to be a really great piece!

wish I had spent more time on texturing mine.

Jeez man, this is awesome...with sooo many people here at CGTALK its hard to pick a favorite because I like so many different aspects of CG and some people are only good at one particualar thing.

But you my friend have a nice all around gift...composition, animation, modeling and texturing...very cool.

Im inspired... just joking about you not entering the next animation challenge. Not having you in any of them would be like Tiger Woods not playing in a Major...just wouldnt be the same.

Good luck and I look forward to this entry.

Dude cant wait 2 c the final thing, looking grand so far, love that spring effect on its body as it gets up and also the way it turns around. the only thing that doesnt look quite right is the way it gets up, maybe a bit more of a swing on the arms b4 it gets up or even put its hands on the floor to help him standing up...but i guess thats not much time to experiment..great anyways.

Considering the amount of time you get for these challenges I think your entry is kick ass. Of course we are all perfectionist and could tweak until the cows came home...but if your being judged on strictly the animation I think that broken down individually each piece is very good.

a) Scientist - Expressions of cockiness and arrogance acheived. Nice face morphs and body movement.

b) Robot - Kinda funny because it seems as if the scientist built him to help take over the world but he doenst seem to function in that capacity at all. And his pre-programming for destruction backfires on the scientist.

I dont think a robot is supposed to move fluidly and this one doesnt, it moves like a robot, it even gives the feeling that it was actually turned on and started with its on board programming.

Like I said, given the time frame this was kick ass, great models, great textures, great anim....only one real crit... maybe its my monitor but it seemed kinda dark.

Other than that....:buttrock:

Being a fan of "Tim Burtonesque" Style art I cannot see a resemblance.:shrug:

However what I do see is some very nice animation and overall effort.Strong contender indeed.Not a simple thing to do,but you have Ila,fine,fine job,I applaud your efforts once again.:thumbsup: :beer:

Hiya Ila,

Good work, I especially like the animation of the robot. Mechanical and smooth too..if you know what I mean.

My only crit would be the lighting, it is very dark and I found that a little distracting the first time I saw it.

has anyone noticed that on the cgchallange site it says contest ends may 4th sunday. But the timer ended yesterday... odd.

i love your piece, the weight in the character and the robot are so belivable. The sound effect definitely helps too. The only part i feel weird is when the scientist falls back after spinning around. It feels as if his head is suddenly 10 times heavier than when he's spinning, looks a little bit unnatural to me. But overall, GREAT JOB!

btw, anyone know when is the challenge over?? i thought it was over yesterday, but now it said may 4th? does that mean that i've time to go back and tweak my animation?

I wish I had looked at the animation challenges earlier, looks like I missed alot of cool stuff. and this was definitely one of them, good job ila! you've proven yourself to be good in almost all of the aspects in 3d now!
