View Full Version : poseDeformer for maya 8.5 sp1
06 June 2007, 02:50 PM
Maya 8.5 service-pack 1 fixes an API bug and now Comet's original source code can be compiled to a working version for maya 8.5 sp1.
This is my compile of Comet's poseDeformer for maya8.5 sp1 (http://www.djx.com.au/mel/poseDeformer_for_maya_8.5sp1.rar)
Please note, if you do not have 8.5 sp1 installed, you will need this 8.5 version (http://www.djx.com.au/mel/poseDeformer_for_maya_8.5.rar) instead.

did you install maya 8.5 service-pack 1 yet? The plugin linked in my first post will fail in the earlier version of maya 8.5
So, just to be clear:
poseDeformer for maya 8.5 (http://www.djx.com.au/mel/poseDeformer_for_maya_8.5.rar)
poseDeformer for maya 8.5 service pack 1
(and you need to get the mel scripts from this link at Comet's site (http://www.comet-cartoons.com/MELfiles/poseDeformer.zip))

LOL..sorry for the confusion, I actually thought it was an upgraded on the pluggin itself and not that sp1 was meant for maya8.5 sp1..best of all I can't even blame that on small night as I sleep like a baby recently :)
will go check a neurosurgeon soon promis ;).

Hey matt, no problems. My original post was not that clear. I hope it is working for you now.
Actually in practice I dont think that most people would notice the difference between the two versions that I have compiled - depending on how they use it. The earlier version should continue to work in maya8.5sp1, but the later version will not work unless you have sp1.
The difference with the earlier version is that, due to the API bug, I had to change a couple of lines of the source code to avoid the bug. Now I'm no expert so the best I could do was avoid the problem by restricting the poseDeformer shape creation to a single joint influence. This caused no problems for me because that is how I use the poseDeformer anyway. I rotate a joint; sculpt the shape; create the pose; and repeat as required for all the different orientations of that joint. The important thing is that only one joint is driving the pose. This works fine for sholders, elbows, hips etc.
However Comet's original code allows you to sculpt a shape for a surface that is the result of several joints being rotated all at once. The shapes you sculpt then have several joints driving them. This would be useful for full hand poses (eg making a fist) or complex poses where a correction is required. Or something like a forearm with a twist bone (or bones).
So maya8.5sp1 fixed the API bug, and I have recompiled the poseDeformer with Comet's original source code, thus returning it to full functionality. But you need maya8.5sp1 to use it.

I've been trying to install Michael Comet's pose space deformer for the past couple of hours. But when ever I try to load the plugin from the plugin manager I just get an error saying "unable to dynamically load poseDeformer".
I dropped the files into the \maya\bin\plugins folder like usual, but I keep getting the no go.
Could this be because I'm using the win64-bit version of Maya 8.5 and not the 32-bit flavor?
Should I be wearing "special" hat for not being able to figure this out?

TJ3000, you do need a version compiled for xp64 - no hat required :)
Unfortunately I cant help you out with that. Maybe someone with xp64 and a compiler can help out. The source code is freely available at Comet's site.
