View Full Version : HMC #9: Grievous vs. ARC LAAT/i
06 June 2007, 05:35 AM
Hey guys, this is my first post, but being a childhood Star Wars fan, I couldn't resist throwing my hat in on this one. Going to recreate the scene from the Clone Wars cartoon series where the ARC Troopers' LAAT/i gunship faces off against General Grievous:
So, yes, another LAAT/i. But, I probably won't focus quite so much time on it as simjoy's, as I hope to put quite a bit of time into Grievous, and perhaps even get another entry in. It's the last few weeks of school for me, though, so we'll see how much I manage. Going to try and compromise between the cartoon and the movies, in particular, certain details of the LAAT differ between the two, and Grievous is quite a bit different. For Grievous, I'm planning on using all the detail and structure from his movie appearance, but retaining the more upright, imposing stature of the cartoon. Making him all wheezy and weak in the movies was such a let down.
A couple more reference images, and then I'll post the very beginning of my progress on the LAAT in another post:

Oh, some competition in the gunship department ...
i am aiming for an ARC version as well, hopefully with some cool Rancor teeth painted on it
good luck with it ..:)

Okay, first pics of progress. Only a few hours into it, and I've mostly been trying to get a good clean mesh for the body of the gunship. Two pics here, one of the low-poly mesh, and one of a quick mock-up of the mesh smoothed in Sub-D. The front nose has been modelled after the cartoon, rather than the movie, but everything else is pretty generic so far. Adding the wing assemblies now, so will update with those soon.
@simjoy: Thanks! Good luck with your own, it's looking great, and about ten steps ahead of mine so far!

Another update. A lot of geometry's been added. I've been so absorbed modelling I keep forgetting to post again. Pretty happy with most everything I've got so far. Considering remodelling the front nose to be like it is in the movies, rather than the cartoon. Just a bit more geometry, then I'll either detail the LAAT or move on to Grievous. If anyone's got some high res/detail shots of Grievous, let me know! So much detail, I'll need every reference I can get.

Its starting to take shape now. The more research you do, the more you find subtle differences in each model used in different films/scenes.
As for Grievous, i reckon that will be harder than it first looks. Lots of little details in his make up.

Thanks simjoy! You're right, Grievous is going to be tough, and I may have gotten myself into more than I bargained for. The areas around the joints seem to be particularly complex, and always in shadow in pictures.
The differences in the LAAT's are frustrating, eh? Especially as there are few high res and detail shots already. Working on my own cockpit now. Got a very busy day ahead, though, so we'll see when I get another update up.

Quick update. Cockpit and front guns. Need to model back turret and missile launchers need a little more work before I move onto General Grievous. Enjoy!

Plenty of detail added to the missile launchers, a quick rear turret (it won't even be visible in the final composition, so it's still pretty rough), and some wing pods. Not really happy with the pods yet, having trouble getting them to look right. Doesn't help when every reference I have of them is slightly different. Any C&C would be much appreciated. Late to class right now, but I'll post some wires at some point as well.

Nice start, I can see its gonna be quite detailed, It be interesting to see if you go for a cartoon shader or some kind of hybrid render look... Great work.

That's a good question, and one I haven't thought too much about. Originally I was aiming to go for a movie style adaptation of the cartoon scene, particularly with respect to Grievous' shape and detailing (i.e. more realistic shading than cartoon). However, I'm not really that attached to photorealistic textures and rendering as opposed to toon. Any opinions?

Well Id say do a test once you have completed the ship, try out some differing looks, realistic, full toon, and somwhere in between, kinda like a more toony Incredibles.
I was playing with a toon shader and radisosity in my Jessica rabbit post, looked quite neat.
What ever you do, your gonna have to uv, and texture. :)

this is looking good! Def one of my fav Star Wars vehicles....I'm starting to wish I had chosen the LAAT.
Keep it up! Looking forward to more updates!

Airflow: Thanks again for the advice. I took a look at your Jessica Rabbit post, and I like the balance between toon outlines/simplicity and the definitly 3D shading. I don't think I could go quite as toony as the Clone Wars cartoons, but something like what you were doing may be nice. My only hesitation is that it would be an awful shame to miss out on all the weathering possibilities. Then again, I don't know if I really want to have to deal with that!
Thanks Projectkmo! The LAAT is admitedly fun, but you can't beat the classic style of the Falcon. I won't be home till later tonight, so no updates till then at least. Any advice on what I still need to work on before starting on Grievous?

Any advice on what I still need to work on before starting on Grievous?I would say you should decide on the camera angle in your scene. That way you can decide what is visible and therefore what needs to be detailed and what, in effect, doesnt need to be there at all ..
if your planning on doing a copy of the scene you posted then concentrate on finishing the front of the LAAT, and move onto Grievous.
if he's(?) in the foreground, he will be the main focus of the scene ..
Just got the Clone Wars DVD yesterday. Its a pretty cool scene, i'm jealous now that you got there first
hope you have time to pull it off ...

Looks like another Grievous to look after...man, this competition is just getting better and better :) Good luck, man.

Looks like another Grievous to look after...At least it's not another Fett ...:D
I do hope your still working away on this GregorioSB. I was looking forward to seeing this scene done in 3D ...

Hey all. I haven't quite given up yet, but thanks for showing interest! I did a quick start on Grievous, but before I could get too far I got distracted. It's finals week for me here at university, and as an engineering student that means stress and lots of it. Just finishing up though, so should be back on it soon. Though it looks like the competition is mounting!
Having the same problem as everyone else, though: trouble finding good refs. For such a prominent villain, there's suprisingly little. At this point, I'll just have to figure it out as I go. Wish me luck!

You need to either get the episode3 dorling kindersley book of the one with the concept art from episode3... I got the second one, Ill try to see if I can scan somthing for you later today.

Thanks Airflow! I've taken a look at the visual dictionary for ep. 3 at the bookstore, but haven't plunked down the cash for it yet. I can't find the concept art book anywhere locally, so I should probably look online. All of my own star wars books are at my parents house, and I won't be there to get any of them until about a week before the deadline. Any scans you can get would be great, but don't worry too much.
I think I'm just going to get started and not stress about acuracy. After all, I'm modelling after the Clone Wars cartoon, which was different and pre-chest crushing. May even take some artistic licence and have fun coming up with something between cartoon and movie. Sorry again for the lack of updates, all, but I should be back on it quickly. All of your encouragement will spur me forward!
