Im deciding on resculpting the pants, Id like them to be animatible as in cloth sim, but Ill just get the pose and sculpt in the creases.

Thanks, unfortunatly exporting the disp was far too time consuming, so Ill re-do the sculpting in mudbox and extract a displacment to use.

Took it into mudbox, my problems havent dissapered tho, Im getting weird banding on my disp maps when I export, so this will have to do for now, its a normal and bump map.
Now onto the rest of the gear, knee pads and thighpads next.

I like the Jango-dancing box thing you got going here, but maybe...maybe Jango's clothes arent baggy enough? Hmmm, nah I reckon it will balance out with the armour on.

Well its currently a normal map, not a displacement, so its less baggy than it should be, and the other consideration is having him on Kamino, in the rain, so right now its in limbo.

When I build characters I either start from the hand, the foot, or the chest. I very rarely start with the head unless its a bust. Its just how I prefer to model, I think someone else was building a fett when I entered, but I hadnt seen it till after my boot was posted, its prolly the same for him, starting off on somthing not as detailed as a face is a better way to plan out an organic.

well it makes no difference to my character modelling anyway, they still turn out wrong ..:shrug:

Slick looking renders. From what I see so far, kamino will be a big improvement over the disco stu platform. Those legs are pretty well modeled, too.

I completely agree about starting modeling from some part of the body other than the head, but that's a lot of detail considering he's got no upper half! Judging by the quality so far, though, you seem to know what you're doing.

Mr A, that is looking fantastic. I now believe that starting with the feet is good idea, as you can place the model in the scene much earlier. I see the light so to speak...

Looking good, Rob. What are you rendering with...looks to me like Maxwell. As to the unexpected problems with pc's and girlfriends...well, what I do is just quickly reformat and reinstall, and as for the girlfriend...her I just throw into the recycle bin.

That is, unfortunately, the nature of the beast. I was forced to leave town on a business trip and wasn't able to enter on the last one because I couldn't finish. This is hardcore, so stay hardcore my friend. It will all pan out.

The creases on the trousers are brilliant and so is his stature. He really seems to be standing on something, unlike most cg humans where they just seem to float in the air. I don't know if I'm imagining things, but I'm thinking perhaps the feet could be slightly rotated outwards. Take off your socks, stand up next to your desk and look'll see what I mean :)

Update on the gun..

After about 4 hours of max trying to corrup my gun nozzle I managed towrestle it form its confused clutches.... Sofar Ive had about 9 crashes in total on this project, and 7 of them were on the nozzle...

No, Im not a huge fan of mental ray after I did a visualisation, and spent about 4-6 hrs online learning how to optimise Mr, did the render which took 2.5 hrs (thats with hiding the glass elements during calculation... good cheat), and then doing the same scene in vray which took 17 minutes with the glass.
Vray is better in my opinion.

Yeah, that was on a freelance job I completed last week. And I pretty much thought I knew how to optomise Mental Ray before I started it. Dont get me wrong, it is very versatile, it just it takes alot to get it working efficiently...

I really think you should fix the proportions of the fingers/hand. Its really easy and this model has already spared no lack of realism so far...

At first I kinda thought that it looked too clean but then every image I found of the gun was clean. (
This has a rougher texture on the chrome but to be honest I prefer Airflows...

Yeah, Vray is pretty much the fastest render engine out there. I used it alot, before moving onto Maxwell, which is slower, but the results are amazing. One of the best features is that once your render is finished, you can have a slider for each of your lights in the scene and update their intensity in REAL TIME. You can even animate them.

Im having displacment problems from the mudbox map extractions, so Im gonna just use the highest level export from mud, like I did with the pants.

No they arre not, I assure you...
The arms are the same mesh as in the daytime image withthe gun in the foreground, and the kneepads are correct, what your seeing is the inside clamp on the Left kneepad, and not the knee darts, which are on the other side, check preivious renders.

The hand looks correct now. Maybe the right nee pad just needs to be rotated a little bit to be more in line with the leg. Looks really great though, I hope you finish in time.

To clear things up, the hand in this pic is the same, whats confusing people is the handle of the gun (looks like fingers), I originally positioned the hand above the handle, like he is about to take out his holstered gun. It looks like the hand is backwards, but its not... This is an image of the hand exactly the same but lower check the orientation of the Left gauntlet.. Also check the Kneepads.

Its looking stunning, Im gonna vote for this if you manage to finish it.....

I vote for the flame instead of the lazer bolt, it would look better...

Only thing that I am curious about, are you going to tone down the reflections a little when you do your final render? The ground reflections (I think) are really strong on the gun etc and it kind of takes a little bit away from the image.

Ps. If people think this projects cool, wait till they see the project you were working on at the 3dunderworld prior to me pulling you away from it.... (Kay Moon was it? The awesome concept sketch...)

The ground is currently standin... I gotta paint a bump map for the rain splashes and sole ripples... Im still undecided on the fire, Id like to have him kneeling if hes letinng off his burner, and standing for the lazer, so I might do the lazer first and then if I have time rig it to get him into pose for the flamethrower....

Don't shoot me for saying this as its probably things you already know... haven't got to... don't care about... or whatever. But, just incase...

The helmet antana
The Center chest piece is missing a center cutout
Needs a longer neck (or is it simpley the angle that is confusing me?)
Helmet may be a tad long (or scaled a little to large)
Armpit area seems not tucked in enough or something... looks a tad fat IOW.

Forgive me for being OVERLY Picky. Your image is FANTASTIC as is. I'm just trying to be of help incase your not seeing a couple things under such a tight deadline : )

I'm comparing it to the ref buckie gave you at 3DUW so maybe its just different ref?

I can't wait to see this 100% finished. Can I have a wallpaper render for my computer :cool:

As said preiviously, the helmet extras are being done, on my ref centre peice exists, its not a cutout.

Trust me, I got the square indentation in there.....

I think thats the right size for the helmet, its got no extras so looks weird.
Np, crits are good at this stage, I think the only thing off is the length of the holsters, easily fixed tho.

I think the flame is a bit artificial looking ATM.

It seems it needs to have 3 transitions. At the front be really bright white, thinner and perfectly straite/cone shaped. Then get Large orange/red/yellow and less straite, then alot larger where it is dissipating/fading away/fumes/etc. Here are some links of the fetts flamethrowers that I'm refering too:

(Ps. I bet his hand is pretty warm ATM...LOL)

Your totally right, but then Im not using volumetrics or particles, mine is a deformed sphere with noise on it and an incidence shader, Ill put in a ramp to try to control the colors...

You NEED to get this model entered by tonight. Maybe its an idea due to the timeframe to drop the flames, add the jet pack and get a good render done ..

It would be a serious disappiontment if you dont enter this model ...

Dunno, I think the helmet looks fine, I had it taller to start off with but shrank it down a touch...Im doing one last fire render, then getting on to posing him and final tweaks for his lazer shot. From that Ill do the wire and ortho renders.

as far as proportions I think it looks pretty good. I think it would look better if his stomach/chest was stretched verticly some centimeters because his chest looks a tad small but again... it could be the angle (if you were to look at some needed stretch it would be inbetween the top chest panel and the shoulder panel). You'll have to be the judge airflow but its worth double checking.

The square cutout on the chest is still mia? (

awesome job, airflow! i have to admit, i didn't think you were going to pull it off when he was just a pair of legs, but you did and it looks great. i love that you modeled the flames, since it was after all a modeling competition, and it gives it a very stylized feel. it's a piece to be proud of for sure.

Well done Airflow! Jango looks awesome and the modelled flame looks great (and I used to think you could only do flames using particles), I pity whoever is judging this challenge as there is so much kick-arse artwork on show. Wish they'd publish a book with our work like they do with the main CGtalk challeneges!
