View Full Version : HMC #9: Star Wars vs. Starcraft
05-26-2007, 07:38 PM
Hi everyone =) This will be my first hardcore modeling challenge so I'm not sure if this is allowable... I was thinking of doing the opening space battle in Episode III but with a slight twist... as Starcraft II has just been announced I wanted to do a slight tribute to them as well (having been an avid player back in the day >_<)... the idea is this: while the Republic and the Separtist are completely engaged in the Clone Wars, news arrive of an invading fleet from a distant galaxy (Starcraft ships), forcing them to join forces to fight off this new common enemy
so the scene will still be the battle setting in Eps III but this time you have Star Wars ships on one side, and Starcraft ships on the other =) Its probably quite ambitious but I really wanted a challenge and I have another project going on that's mostly organic modelling so I really wanted to make this one strictly hardsurface while still being hardcore... so a space battle was the perfect idea =) anyway i'm reeally excited about doing this scene but if it isn't allowed, then I'll just do the opening space battle scene as it is in the movie, which will be fun too =)
Here are some shots of the battle from the movie:

That sounds like a great idea and will involve a ton of modelling. Look forward to seeing what you come up with.
I'm suprised no one has done the old star destroyer duking it out with the USS enterprise from Star Trek.
06-02-2007, 09:43 AM
whew okies got a bit caught up in something else but now I'm ready to go! Better make up for lost time =)
Here's WIP for the first ship, the ARC-170 (I loved the x-wing book series and actually modelled the xwing in my very first 3d class, so making the ARC-170 first was just natural heheh)
WIP shots (only half the ship, obviously heheh)
Closeup of the engine
I'm hoping to detail the body and finish detailing the wings tomorrow. I might leave the interior for the end after I finish all the ships, just in case time runs short =)
06-02-2007, 07:40 PM
a verry interesting topic
the scale of the thing is grand
i will definatly be watching your progress
06-03-2007, 03:58 PM
I am so keeping my eye here... GO STARCRAFT GO
06-03-2007, 08:43 PM
good luck man, your start is great, want the continuation!
06-04-2007, 11:30 AM
thanks everyone =) hope I can pull it off!
so this is probably going to seem like a small update, but I actually changed a lot of things. I found a better reference for the engine and realized some of the parts were off so they were remodelled. Also finished fleshing out the body, added the artoo unit, and the rear gun. Does anyone know where I could get better images of the guns (back and forward)? Most of this time I've spent trying to find a picture where I get a better view of them but no luck yet =(
Updates on the engine - rear view
Body details plus the artoo unit (modelled after r2d2 of course =)
I also noticed that the engines are a bit big for the body... or at least the nose of the ship is too short so I'll have to fix that. One more day on this and I haaave to move on!
06-04-2007, 03:07 PM
Lookin really good so far, I thought about doing this ship too, I really wish they had featured it more in episode 3, it's such a cool design.
06-06-2007, 04:51 AM
okies update on the guns =)
now I just have to fix the underbody of the ship, clean up the mesh, duplicate and fix seams, and then I think I can put this one aside for now
06-06-2007, 07:44 AM
finished for now =) c&c welcomed as usual
Click for larger pic
06-06-2007, 08:15 AM
looks pretty good to me....keep it up
06-09-2007, 11:32 PM
next ship... the Venator-class Star Destroyer =)
very simple, general blocking, just to figure out where all the big shapes are going
06-10-2007, 09:27 AM
getting started with the tower
06-10-2007, 06:06 PM
you have done a great job, but i think you must finish your model before doing an other, must do all the maps of the texture no, imagine you can't finish all the texture because you have made so much ship...
06-10-2007, 06:29 PM
thanks lopium =) I'm actually not intending to texture any of these... at least not for this challenge... its a hardcore modeling challenge and I'm just taking that as it is
06-10-2007, 08:23 PM
Really nice work so far ..
good point about the textures, it is a modelling comp after all. Textures are optional ..
06-10-2007, 10:18 PM
Thanks for commenting on my AT-ST:thumbsup:
Your ships are looking awesome and the attention to detail is what really does it for me.
06-10-2007, 10:53 PM
thanks simjoy and octopus7 =) and no prob on the comment your AT-ST looks awesome! i'll have more updates of the star destroyer up later... I'm hoping to either finish or get the tower a decent amount along the way by tonight... cross your fingers for me! heheh
06-11-2007, 10:08 AM
Did what I could from screenshots I got from the dvd plus some ref I found online, but a lot of it I was just making up as I went >_<
06-11-2007, 01:47 PM
Is this any good to you as a reference ? Its an excerpt from the DK book "incredible Cross-sections"
click for a 1502 x 998 image ...
I was looking around for something else and inadvertently found it
06-11-2007, 03:41 PM
Star Wars part looks good so where is the StarCraft component? No reference or anything. :D
Just kidding looking great.
06-12-2007, 02:18 AM
thanks simjoy that's actually the main ref I'm using, but yours is much higher res
WyattHarris, starcraft part is coming after I finish this ship, which is hopefully soon =) I'm taking the day off though to work on some other projects, but maybe updates tmw
Thanks for the comment, Mai. I personally think you're INSANE for wanting to make the whole epic scene with all the ships, but hey...you've build two already, so what's there to stop you from completing another 50 or so :)
Can't wait for you to model a Protoss Carrier ship....easily one of my favourite space vehicles of all time!
06-13-2007, 01:13 AM
Beautiful, just butiful, I hope you will finish cos there is a way to go, so mebbe a composite could be a back up plan.
06-13-2007, 04:50 AM
aw thanks everyone =) its easy to lose steam on projects sometimes but all your comments are really helping me stay motivated :scream:
Yav, it sure does seem insane now that I'm working on it! when I had the idea originally it just seemed so cool and fun to do I couldn't help it heheh =) Just gotta keep at it... I still have 27 days right? heheh
and carriers are coming up, one of my favs too =) altho I'll probably make an Interceptor first, to take a break after this star destroyer O_O
06-15-2007, 08:56 AM
okies finally started working on the rest of the tower... I'm getting ready to move at the end of June so been a bit busy dealing with that >_<
more detailing tomorrow =)
06-16-2007, 07:37 AM
small update =) I started doing the panels that's all across the hull but maya crashed on me... it's alright though it wasn't really working the way I wanted it to anyways. I'll have another go at it later
06-16-2007, 12:02 PM
great job your ship it's really cool with all those details, want to see it finish!
06-16-2007, 09:05 PM
Excellent! Thats ALOT of work! Brings the true meaning to "Hardcore Modeling" IMHO.
I checked out your website after seeing this thread and I got say... Outstanding Demo Reel! Really cool stuff : )
06-17-2007, 05:11 PM
thanks guys =) John - wow that website and demo reel needs a serious update... I haven't touched it in almost a year! >_< thanks for looking tho! :scream: I'm working on the back of the SD now so hopefully I'll have an update later today =)
06-21-2007, 05:49 AM
okies some very late updates >.< something came up and I didn't do any modelling for a few days, except on and off a bit here and there... finally sat down today and got a bit more done =)
and overall how its looking... occlussion pass is starting to get too expensive for just these progress shots, but I'll do one once the whole back is finished and its more interesting to look at =)
06-21-2007, 06:39 AM
Very special modeling skills you got there buddy..
Looks like its straight from the film...
06-23-2007, 01:26 PM
thanks Airflow =) makes watching that battle of coruscant scene for the billionth time worthwhile heheh
okies the back is more or less finished... as I was rendering I saw a few things here and there I wanna fix but for the most part this is it... excuse the low quality but I was tryin to get these rendered quicker >_< some of the finer details got lost but I guess in the final render they're not gonna be too visible either
and to tie in from last post...
06-23-2007, 02:42 PM
emm, cant really think of anything to say ..
absolutely awesome modeling .. I do worry you wont get all this done in time though ..
06-25-2007, 06:56 AM
thanks simjoy =) yea I'm def worried too... couple things came up I wasn't expecting (doesn't it always happen that way heheh)... just got done moving most of my stuff today and got my comp set up so hopefully I can spend the next couple of days modelling... who needs to unpack right away right? =D If nothing else though I can def finish this ship and build the base/scene for it so I'd have the Venator-class star destroyer with its fleet of ARC-170 to submit =)
06-25-2007, 07:06 AM
06-25-2007, 10:36 PM
Wow the modelling on that star destroyer is awesome, so much detail!
06-25-2007, 10:47 PM
06-26-2007, 08:03 PM
Been watching this since you started, its really coming along nice! Can't wait to see the final composition. What program are you using?
06-26-2007, 09:26 PM
wow, looking at that reminds me of the time I assembled a Star Destroyer kit. :)
Excellent eye for detail. Keep it up, mate :)
06-27-2007, 10:23 PM
thanks everyone =) had to take some time off modeling to update my website (new city, new job and all that) and unpack and clean and such but hopefully can get some time in today... i have some updates but would rather save the rendering for when there's a bit more to look at =)
cat-mad I'm using Maya entirely for this challenge, although I just got my hands on Maxwell renderer to play with =D Trying to refrain from it though until after this competition ends so I can devote all the time I do have to modeling. I blame this temptation on Yav and his super nice renders using maxwell grrr hehehe
06-27-2007, 11:38 PM
wow, i guess i forgot somewhere along the way that this was a hardcore MODELING challenge. seems like you have kept true to that. i can't way to see the new render
06-28-2007, 12:08 AM
wow, i guess i forgot somewhere along the way that this was a hardcore MODELING challenge. seems like you have kept true to that.
Yes, but this is more on the side of theatrical film...LOL.
Can't wait for an update : )
I really hope you get to finish all this...
06-30-2007, 06:17 AM
me too john =( unfortunately i'm going out of town this weekend too so that's a few more precious days gone! just gotta pull a few all nighters =)
okies time for some fire power! Here's the DBY-827 heavy dual turbolaser turret. Ref for these were impossiiible to find but here's what I came up with:
DBY-827 row =) 4 on each side:
here's a shot of the ship overall right now:
and a closeup of the mostly finished back (some parts still needs details... should be obvious which =)
06-30-2007, 06:51 AM
WOW Absolutely amazing work. I really hope you can get this ship finished in time. Will you still model the starcraft stuff at a later date if you can't do it now?
06-30-2007, 07:19 AM
Id hate to have to texture all of that.....
06-30-2007, 09:53 AM
thanks guys =)
octopus, i'm defintely intending to model the starcraft stuff... i already drew out some rough storyboards for the animation i'm eventually going to do with this once i'm done =) hopefully i can keep up the motivation without all of u guys there to encourage me tho!
airflow... boy do i know it... i'm not looking forward to the uv mapping and texturing at aaaall heheh
06-30-2007, 10:37 AM
Why not post it in a WIP thread so we can watch, I would like to see how this turns out after the competition has finished. Will be checking your site :)
07-02-2007, 04:29 AM
wow mai you have been busy huh? hehe this stuff is looking really good i always loved your detail work :D keep up the great work and i hope you find time to get as much done as you'd like
*go mai* *go mai* *go mai*
"impressive very impressive" (by darth vider)
You'll be OK with the uv mapping...just attach the parts in a logical manner and plane map everything :) Texturing will be a challenge though...all the wheathering, scratches, paint peel, bump, diffuse, material masks, etc. If you get it done though...what a major addition to your portfolio, that would be.
07-02-2007, 06:14 PM
What Is Your Poly Count Man? Holy @#!# Thats Awsome Modeling I Would Have Gone The Displacement Route But Your Making This Model Your Beotch! Keep It Up.
07-03-2007, 08:43 AM
thanks everyone! =)
cat-mad i was just thinking that the other day =) we'll see after this competition ends... if not it'll def be on my website tho if anyone cares to look... plus i'll shoot you guys an update when its all done =)
dj heheh yeea its getting up there... altho I was being very meticulous in the cleanup for this one as I modelled (which doubled the time it took to model any one thing but worth it when it came time for rendering) so there are almost no extra hidden faces, etc.... i made an airship based on a spanish galleon when I was still in school and thaaat one was murder to render cause I didn't know how to properly clean files and such yet >_< you guys can check it out if you want =) http://3dmai.com/windsnocturne.html
alright only a few more days left eeps >.< I just got back into town so this is a really small update... worked on the deck between the towers and the turbolasers
07-03-2007, 05:32 PM
This is coming along so nicely, we're all on the edge of our seats waiting for updates!!
Any chance of seeing a mesh view?
07-03-2007, 05:59 PM
i wouldn't even know how to start modeling with that much detail. i have always sucked at hard surface modeling, so if i ever need some done, i am coming to you for it. outstanding work!
07-04-2007, 02:43 AM
thanks guys =)
cat-mad, i'll include a wire render with the next update =)
red, ditto for the organic stuff! just saw your latest greedo update and wow!
07-07-2007, 06:55 AM
last weekend eeps!
update on the upper deck
overall as it is now:
some close ups:
sorry i'll post the wires up later... i wanna get this ship done first >.<
07-07-2007, 11:07 AM
Im not looking forward to voting at all, I mean, Lookit" this guy just built a stardestroyer...
Brilliant work mate.... Be nice to see, if you find the time, the opening from ANH :P
07-07-2007, 12:48 PM
Break out the airfix paints!:D
07-07-2007, 07:34 PM
hahah thanks guys =) airflow I could trry... who needs sleep anyway right? heheh but I have the wrong star destroyer :D... think i can get away with it?
working on the sides right now... updates should be coming throughout the day =)
07-07-2007, 09:09 PM
started the details on the side
time for food break =)
07-07-2007, 09:52 PM
Your project must be like trying to put together a 100,000 piece puzzle in your spare time with less then a month to do it in. I honesty am just blown away with how much work has gone into this project. It would seem as though you have a team of 5 on the project or something...LOL.
I can't even imagine what the wires would look like for this... I'm looking VERY forward to seeing them.
Maybe we should have a hardcore unwrap/texturing/painting challenge after this
Keep it up. Don't waist your time eating anymore... you got a project to finish...LOL.
07-07-2007, 11:34 PM
Whyst, So when do you start that nice job at ILM with Mr Lucas?
The amount of detail you have put into this star destroyer is awesome.
07-08-2007, 12:53 PM
hehehe thanks for the kind words guys =) makes me feel guilty that my food break turned into a rather longer break than i intended >_<
john, if there's an unwrap/texturing/painting challenge next i'll be conveniently busy with other projects :D but one day for sure =)
almost done with the sides... just got that little area left
07-09-2007, 06:56 AM
finished the underside of the ship... almooost done now =)
07-09-2007, 06:59 AM
Keep'em coming :bounce:
07-10-2007, 12:44 AM
gonna make it?
07-10-2007, 01:27 AM
shoould be able to I hope... still have about 5 hours >_<
wasted some time today doing a couple of failed experiments so gave those up for now (just not worth it with deadline approaching)... got back to modeling and finished the star destroyer. I'm setting up renders right now so should be updated soon =)
07-10-2007, 04:43 AM
okies star destroyer is finished yay! still have to do the wires and the beauty.. 2ish hrs left (where I'm at)
Blinding amount of details. Traditional Special Effects guys loose their model-making jobs to people like you :)
07-10-2007, 04:55 AM
that's amazing. i mean just holy cow.
07-10-2007, 05:00 AM
the uv'ers and texture artists  over people like you...LOL.
How on earth is anybody going to judge this contest. I mean c'mon... we have a freakin destroyer here! With the usually bump mapped/displaced details modeled...
Not to mention the crazy awesome models and entrees its up against! I mean, I have about 6 different people I want to shoot my vote too...
Never would I have thought this contest would get THIS Hardcore!
07-10-2007, 05:45 AM
What do you think HCM stands for :P.
Exxelent work mate, truly this is the epitomy of the competition goals. No zbrush3, no bump/displace maps, just pure hard graft... "Your Craft are very impressive, You must be very Proud.." :)
07-10-2007, 07:04 AM
Click for high res =)
07-10-2007, 07:17 AM
here we are guys! at the end =) Its been one crazy month and a half. My original idea was obviously too ambitious for this time frame but I'm still happy with what I got done. Star Wars wiiiill battle Starcraft though so stay tuned! I might start up a WIP thread on CGSociety somewhere but it'll def. be on my website for anyone interested =)
A BIG thanks to everyone who commented on my thread and gave me the motivation to keep going, even on those long nights when you're sooo tired and you wonder why the heck you've done this to yourself! There are so many awesome entries in this compeitition its been a lot of fun following along and seeing people's work progress. Good luck to everyone!
07-10-2007, 07:19 AM
oh and AIrflow... I used bump map for the planet/platform in the end >_< time just didn't permit doing it any other way... so close though! hahah
07-10-2007, 02:13 PM
great work whyst. the amount of detail is astonishing. i like that you made the base under the star destroyer. nice touch i'll be looking for that WIP thread. i want to see who wins. my money is on StarCraft.
07-10-2007, 07:57 PM
thanks red =) I had always intended to make it a base of the planet Coruscant but didn't leave enough time at the end to make it look good... oh well at least its there =)
maya still crashes every time I try to do a wireframe render through Maya Vector so here's the best I can do with a tweaked screen capture... most of the lines are so close to each other that they just become big blobs heheh... Will post renders of closer ups in a bit =)
07-10-2007, 08:06 PM
I really enjoyed watching this being built and its turned out really nice! Looking forward to the closeup wireframe renders, what was the final poly count in the end??
07-10-2007, 08:33 PM
thanks for all the support cat-mad! final count is 903036 faces =)
does anybody know another way to render wireframe in maya besides Maya Vector? It just couldn't handle this scene...
07-10-2007, 08:35 PM
and some close ups (sorta heheh)
07-10-2007, 08:48 PM
take a screenshot of the UV's
change the color if you want the wireframe to be a specific color. Then re-apply this texture to the model using a layered texture node. put the original color on top with 100% opacity and blend mode none
07-10-2007, 09:59 PM
thanks djtrain... I've used that technique before but there are so many separate pieces in this model that it'll take forever to do heheh
07-10-2007, 11:52 PM
Wow, Mai. Simply wow. I mean...i feel lucky that I got to sit next to you in class everyday.
07-11-2007, 09:21 AM
Are you going to texture it?
07-13-2007, 03:49 PM
first: what was the final polycount for the start Destroyer?
second: did you greeble that whole thinga poly at a time or is there some script that you used? if so could you point me in the right direction?
I know there used to be a cheap little plugin for 3ds max that did this. but I have not been able to find one for Maya.
07-16-2007, 02:46 AM
thanks guys! rusty, yes I do intend to texture it some time in the future but not the near near future as I have other projects I need to get back to =) calma, final count was 903036 faces and I made the whole thing polygon by polygon... no scripts or anythin fancy =)
07-16-2007, 03:26 AM
cool man, great work
07-18-2007, 09:48 PM
Jeeze, fantastic job. Quite a massive undertaking to finish in the time allotted.
amazing details, I'm following this thread til the end for sure. I'm also eager to see how you're going to map all this in a not so near future :p
