View Full Version : Outpost - VFX Challenge - Equinoxx

i given it some thought and decided i'm entering this one.
time has come to shift gears and learn something else besides modeling :D
So this is my first time in the vfx challenge and i am enjoying myself sofar . . .

got my backplate and concept ready,
so here goes.
the backplate is made using several images to give it some more juice ;)
The hole is part of Henrik Holmbergs 'The Dig' and was the best hole I could find on the net
I asked him if I could use it. awaiting his reply . . . and just got word i can use it whoohoooo. thx Seung Ho Henrik

03 March 2003, 02:45 PM
the paintrain is comin!! wohooooooo!!

nice to see you in the vfx challenge for a change! good luck to you ;)

03 March 2003, 06:20 PM
wow , man you are multitalented!!

looking forward to see how this develops

03 March 2003, 09:31 PM

This one sure is coming along nicely since yesterday! I love the hole in the ground ;) Perhaps you could have some antennae coming out of there?
It would be cool to do a night time scene of this as well, and add some lighting coming out of that hole, if you have the time :D

Well, looking forward to seeing more! Are you going to be keeping all of those other buildings there? (the ones that were in the photo) Or are you going to remove some of them?

Secret message:
I won't tell anyone where you got the pic of the hole from ;-) hehehehe

03 March 2003, 09:39 PM
I know your little hole secret.

03 March 2003, 11:53 PM
You've got a nasty seam on the grass around the hole....

I've circled the bit that struck me here:

03 March 2003, 02:24 AM
Wow Yves that's looking great man, love the seamless integration you got going on!

Looking very good

Prisoner. i ain't got no secrets :D

Leigh, yeah i think i'll keep those original buildings. they've grown on me while painting :D

patience is a virtue

I like the idea of enhancing the image with elements of other ones, such as i tried in mine, in this challenge the backplate is 50% of the final result IMO. The design of the outpost is great. You have to pay attention to the scale of the outpost regarding the man made buildings, i donīt know the size of your aliens.;)
If you donīt mind i uploaded a picture of two suggestions for your image: IMO The bright spot doesnīt belong anymore to the cliff and the "green mesa" should continue to the ground, the hole is too big for the height of it.

Good work and keep posting.

My thread on Outpost - VFX Challenge (

03 March 2003, 09:49 PM
good suggestions. I allready figured i should make the cliff go offscreen cause indeed, the hole is to deep for such a 'thin' slab of rock. I think i'm gonna keep the bright hole tho. perhaps i'm gonna make something come out of that ;)

03 March 2003, 11:44 PM
did a little test with cameramapping. this stuff is fun :D
got lots of stuff to work on, but I think this'll be the path i'm taking :D

Yeah that's really slick man, didn't know you could do that with photos ;) digging the progress keep going

03 March 2003, 03:04 PM
Hey equinoxx!!! :)

I have a question, what is the use of the green color in the background?

ANd is there a tutorial to know all the steps to get the quality you achieved so as many others on the challenge with the camera mapping?

Thanx :D

03 March 2003, 03:32 PM
Looks really promsing,
Good luck:wip:

Thanx :D

not sure what you mean with the green color in the background, but if you're refering to the darker patch, there is no use, it's just a darker patch ;)

as for a tutorial on quality mapping, it's so easy that eventho it is my 1st time ever doing this, i did not need a tutorial.

there are only a few things you need to keep in mind when setting it up.
- make sure the you match the camera you're going to use for cameramapping as close as possible to the perspective of the image.
- Model geometry stand-ins as accurate as possible for use with camera mapping.
- don't overdo the movement in the camera you are going to animate.

that's about it. I'm sure your software of choise has a piece about camera mapping in the helpfiles. can't imagine it's hard to setup.

In max, you select the geo-standin, apply a cameramap modifier, pick the matched camera and apply the backplate. that's all there's to it basically.

Iquiniz: thx :D

03 March 2003, 03:53 PM
i am talking about all your background in the sorenson you produced...why is it all green, background, it's a vrey bright GReen, fluorescent.

Is there a reason that my novice brain wouldn't know :P :)

03 March 2003, 04:09 PM
ah THAT green hehe

no there's no real reason for that either. it just looked cool. normally, the rest of the background would be there, but i haven't set that up for cammapping, so it would only destract cause it woon't move ;)

03 March 2003, 08:48 AM
all the best man!

03 March 2003, 10:56 AM
Henrik Holmbergs 'The Dig' ...............Excellent choice, really a choice pick.I like the path you are on Equinoxx,it looks quite promising.Seamless thus far too, always important......;)

Looks to be like this will be fun to watch progress, and you are well on your way, good luck and keep up the good work.

03 March 2003, 01:00 AM
Come on, show us your kickass-update!

hehe :airguitar

03 March 2003, 01:33 AM
you are slacking in showing us things man...I KNOW you are slacking...

03 March 2003, 02:15 AM
ah finally an update.

i completely remade a new backplate to give me some more workingspace, so here is the new backplate, accompanied by a 3d camera mapped animationpreviz.

Still need to fill in the leftside of the backplate and ofcourse add mode structures.

C&C welcome :D

am big fan of u, Equinoxx...

hope to some more updates soon...

03 March 2003, 11:08 PM
time for another update :D

finished most of the cameramapping except the lowerright foreground.
I think i will complety change the structures, cause i don't think they have enough 'size-impact'

still having a blast

Looks awfully rad, Equinoxx :buttrock: :buttrock: :buttrock:
Dig the new backplate a lot more than the old one.

03 March 2003, 05:48 AM
That's lookin really awesome man, keep it up!

03 March 2003, 09:48 AM
A very smooth cam move, I like it.
Also the movement of the vessels, it fits good into the scene.

03 March 2003, 11:35 PM
:bounce: :wavey: hi Equinoxx ...really good work on backplate , i am looking forward to your next updates:beer:

03 March 2003, 12:36 AM
again, thank you for the kind words. really keeps me going :D

here's another updated. started laying out the structures and tweaked the backplate a little which is now final.
still need to add lots of stuff, do a good lighting add details and textures and so on and so forth

looks really great man!

I told you allthat already

so...texture it!

03 March 2003, 10:02 AM
Nice work bro! :buttrock:

Got some ideas for you. Will mention them one of these days. Keep on the good work. You make your big bro (smaller in size though) proud

03 March 2003, 10:05 AM
Looks good, Equinoxx. My only question is: what's the white in the background? Is it snow? If so, it seems a bit odd to me that the snow goes to the bottom of the picture, into the forest...

03 March 2003, 10:35 AM
Don't forget to animate this waterfall and river in background, Equinoxx ;)

03 March 2003, 12:07 PM

actually, it's not a waterfall . . . it's a slab of bare rock.
BUT i was thinking of making it into a waterfall, since it
looks like one anyhoo . ..

still got some surprises in store, so no worries.
All will be well in the land of good and evil :D

03 March 2003, 12:51 PM
it still looks like waterfall to me ;) That wos first impression ;)

03 March 2003, 10:47 PM
and another update, did some more work on the structures and added some slight detail to the cruiser . . .

more to come :D

03 March 2003, 12:08 AM
Dunno why the cruiser reminds me one of the Dusso's paintings....

Nice touch with these characters.... will they be animated?:bounce:

03 March 2003, 12:39 AM

that would be possible, since the design is loosely based on
one of his paintings :)

and no, i don't think the lil chums will be animated
got lots of stuff to do still and you wouldn't notice it anyway :)

03 March 2003, 12:43 AM
Just loosely based :p ;)

Well there is no where better to get inspiration than Dusso in my book.
The composition is looking quite interesting. I do think you should make a waterfall instead of a Rock slab as well. Lot's of potential, nice start.

03 March 2003, 01:26 AM
loosely based yeah . . .

cause i started the rough form of the cruiser before i recalled dusso's cruiser.

but, credit where credit is due, dusso concepted an ACE cruiser ;)

btw, i edited your message so that there's a link instead of a picture, so people don't mistake that image for mine . . .
and so doesn't get unnessecary bandwidth leakage ;)

glad ya like it :) waterfall it is ;)

03 March 2003, 09:03 AM
dusso concepted an ACE cruiser

amen to that ;) is one of my favourite "inspiration sites", I can stare at these paintins and always find something new ;) As Magnusv said, no better place...;)

04 April 2003, 12:15 AM
Henrik Holmbergs 'The Dig' is getting real justice here.Wonderful start and great potential.Very interesting Equinoxx. Keep up the fine work,it's all well worth the effort,oh and have fun too. ;)

04 April 2003, 09:46 AM
Looking great there Equinoxx!! This is coming along really nicely.

Looking forward to more!!!

04 April 2003, 03:11 PM
thx all, thx :D

small update, started some texturing and integrating of the structures. Lighting needs some tweaks and still haven't gotten round to the stream & waterfall. all in due time tho ;)

anyhoo, on with the show
C&C as always very welcome.

Keep doing what your doing!

yeah sure man, no problem . . .

will post one tonite. am at work right now with no access to the file.

04 April 2003, 10:34 PM
well, here's the wire and a preview of the animated river, make use of particles :D

Water Test Animation (

04 April 2003, 11:07 PM
It is really kicking ass, guess I was right when I thought it looked promosing:thumbsup:,
Keep it up.

There are some parts were the river comes out were is doesn't suposed to be coming over ther grass.
It is the part that is just before the corner the water comes from and in tthe inside of the corner that comes next.

04 April 2003, 09:05 PM
hey, took a look at your water test. The water looks awesome, but it seems to be moving way too fast for the distance away it is from the camera. I believe from that distance it would appear to be barely moving.:D

04 April 2003, 12:06 AM
Thats coming along really nicely there Equi!

The Test looks awesome!

04 April 2003, 02:19 PM

I like what you've done with the place. It's coming along very nicely. I don't know how bad of a question this is because I haven't read the entire thread before asking this. It's just five pages is a little long and I'm just wondering what app you're using.

04 April 2003, 02:25 PM
Iguiniz, thx for pointing that out, but i allready knew ;) it's just a test remember.
Also, i realised that indeed the stream goes way to fast for the distance it's being seen from. fixed that ;)

thx for the ncie comments my friends :D

and to answer your question, Marvin, the app i'm using is 3dsmax

04 April 2003, 10:21 AM
...and using it amazingly well! Did you do the water with a material?

Very cool, this one! I will be watching your progress on the piece!:)

04 April 2003, 01:16 PM
the water is done using standard max particles.

Equinoxx' 5-step Recipy for particle based river:

- create one blizzard particle system
- create one pathfollow spacewarp
- bind the blizzard to the spacewarp
- tweak the settings for speed and amount of paricles
- enable motionblur on the particles.

voila . . . ;)

04 April 2003, 02:06 PM
Never used that PathFollow Spacewarp before. That's a cool trick!:D

04 April 2003, 03:47 PM
The cam-projection is tha bomb bro!

Better check your 4th step in the "Equinoxx' 5-step Recipy for particle based rivers"......

The speed is incredible!! ;)
Yeah, yeah , it's just a test....
I know!

But some real comments for ya:
These structures are too simple to be labeled as certified Equi-stuff :shame:

So no sleep for you this week!!!

I'ts coming along Excellent

But as I Have said before....You really need some birds in there, just like in the overviews of Cities in LOTR/GLADIATOR/STARWARS Etc etc... You know what I mean..

I would really add to the sense of scale.

Keep it up!
