View Full Version : HMC 9: STAR WARS TRIBUTE: Boushh Frees Solo
05 May 2007, 02:45 AM
There's no better time for my first foray into an HMC than this, as Star Wars has been such an influential entity throughout my life. I will be attempting to recreate the scene where the mysterious bounty hunter Boushh frees Captain Solo from his carbonite tomb.
EDIT: Some reference of what I'm shooting for:
Han in Carbonite
Leia in Disguise
Jabba's Favorite Decoration

Finally, some progress. Here is the early stage of Solo's carbonite block. I need to add some ventilation slats to the top, and then I'll start carving Captain Solo out of it. I started on Boushh's helmet on Friday and will have some images in the coming days.
05 May 2007, 12:57 AM
I decided to put down the carbonite block for a bit today and restart Boushh's helmet. Here's the progress so far:

ohhh, good choice! will keep an eye on this =)
05 May 2007, 03:11 PM
Thanks Manny. Jabba's court is one of my favorite set pieces in the original trilogy, and seeing an Alderaanian princess skulk around there in a bounty hunter disguise was just classic.
Small update from this morning with more detail added to the helmet:
After a break for lunch I'm going to start laying out the scene and hope to have an image of that posted tonight.
05 May 2007, 02:46 AM
I put some shots of the original costume in the reference thread...good luck with it.
05 May 2007, 03:34 AM
Those shots help immensely. I've been able to find tons of good shots of the original helmet, but not of the full costume - particularly the boots. Thanks a lot, Chris!

My update for the day. I have more details to add to the ear region, the "sensor" that pokes out of the left side, and a strap that runs around the back of the helmet, but as for the overall shape I need to put a stamp on it and move on to the other parts of the scene and the rest of the body. After those other details are added I'll cook off some renders of the other sides of the helmet.

This is going to be a strange request, but has anyone ever seen a layout or blueprint of Jabba's throne room/court? I have plenty of still grabs from the DVD, but as I'm trying to lay out the room (especially the little corner where he hangs Solo) I'm having difficulty figuring out the transition between the arched alcoves in the back of the room and Han's corner.
I suppose if I still had Star Wars Galaxies installed I could just go into the Palace myself and see what it looks like, but alas I quit that game months ago.
06 June 2007, 02:53 AM
Small update for today, as I've begun roughing out the room and building some furniture.
06 June 2007, 12:59 PM
A very cool scene and very impressive modeling going on here. I raelly like it so far.
I used to play SWG aswell, but I don't have any snapshot of that room.
But it looks like you are doing a good job anyway.
06 June 2007, 06:15 PM
nice choice! can't wait to see more updates... esp Han in carbonite... that should be a lot of fun to do =)
06 June 2007, 01:29 AM
PKT: I went back and grabbed some shots from some other scenes in RotJ besides when Boushh is rescuing Han, and they helped. Particularly when 3PO and R2 are presented to Jabba and when the band is playing for him before Ooala is fed to the rancor. The throne room is lit much brighter at the time and you can see a lot more detail in these scenes. Plus, it kept me from going back and playing a video game under the guise of "research." :D
Whyst: Han is what I'm most looking forward to. After another day or so of carving out the environment, I'm going to spend a week on Boushh and then the forseeable future on that chunk of carbonite.
Speaking of the room, here's a small update.

Wow Awesome Detail, This is gonna look good, I can't wait to see the adobe walls when you are all done with the lighting!!! Hellz yeah, You gotta have Leia holding the thermal detonator
06 June 2007, 06:53 PM
if you want to texture and set up a good light for this scene it can be pretty tough.
06 June 2007, 12:08 AM
This is an awesome scene and modelling! I wouldve liked to have done this for the comp myself but after almost two years in doing environments im a little over it hehehe
GL!! I'll be watching this thread!!
06 June 2007, 03:11 AM
This is looking very nice. The room is impressive so far, especially the tables. I agree with an earlier post, lighting this will be tricky.
06 June 2007, 07:12 PM
Well, progress slowed to a near halt over the last day or two. Character modeling is very new to me, so creating the figure of Boushh is going to be a significant challenge. For the past two years I've been tasked exclusively with making aircraft and mechanical parts, so this next step will be quite different - but it's a welcome and necessary change of pace.
Here's a couple of shots of today's work. I just started the backpack, and hope to wrap it up tonight or early tomorrow.
06 June 2007, 05:42 PM
A small update, finally.
06 June 2007, 10:36 PM
Very detailed. Looking great!
06 June 2007, 06:34 PM
I'm shifting my focus a bit off of the bounty hunter and back to Solo. He's had no attention paid to him for quite some time. Right now I'm just pulling the general shape out and getting proportions right, then I'll go back and harden edges and add details.
06 June 2007, 04:35 AM
A little more Han, plus a few of the wrinkles starting to pop up.
06 June 2007, 02:21 AM
Yet more Han...
Hands have always proven to be a major source of modeling frustration for me, but if I have any hope of finishing by the deadline, I've got to move on. Tomorrow I'll finish wrinkling the clothes and then on to the face, and then back to the hands at the end if I have time.
06 June 2007, 02:40 AM
You haven't updated in a while... hows this going? You had some excellent modeling going on! I have a decent upclose picture of Solo I scanned if you would like it. Looks like you may already have enough images of him though...
Anyways, looking forward to an update
06 June 2007, 03:45 AM
Thanks John. Funny that you posted that when you did, because I just uploaded a new render. It's my first pass on the face, plus more wrinkles added to his right leg.
A couple of my top priorities are adding the odd carbonite teeth, working on the area around the top of his head, and then piling on the rest of the wrinkles. As for the delay, I had a lot of volunteer work that kept me busy for the better part of last week, but I'm clear of that so the updates should be much quicker and substantial this week.
06 June 2007, 03:55 AM
Cool! Nice to see this one coming along again : )
06 June 2007, 08:56 PM
Alright, it's time to move on from the carbonite block and back to the scene at large for a bit, and then finish up Boushh. Still not happy with some areas in the block, but time is of the essence.
06 June 2007, 10:20 PM
Looks really good so far. looking forward to seeing the finished work.
06 June 2007, 10:51 PM
it seems that carbonite block needs more work but every part you're working on is awesome.
06 June 2007, 06:54 PM
Thanks for the comments guys. Shahabp, if time allows I have some work to do around Han's head, but for now it's going to have to stay as-is while I move on to the rest of the scene. You're right though, there's still work to be done on the block.
Small update today: I added the ceiling, which I don't think you'll be seeing in the final shot, but the holes and slats will hopefully help me cast the right shadows as seen in the film. Also punched a few holes in Jabba's precious palace walls. Now for a bit more fruit on the table, some cups lying around, and a couple of curtains on either side, and then the attention goes back to Boushh.
07 July 2007, 02:00 AM
First lighting pass:
And a bit more of Boushh. Just getting proportions and general shapes. Further details and wrinkles to follow shortly:
07 July 2007, 01:20 AM
Nice lighting! Looks great!
07 July 2007, 10:49 PM
Great job. I like the lighting.
07 July 2007, 02:50 AM
Theerapol, Kevin, thanks! I'm going to tinker with a bit of fog - just a tiny bit - in the next day or two to see how it looks. Jabba did his bit of smoking and when going back and watching those scenes in RotJ you can get a sense of that smoky feel to the room.
Boushh has now sprouted legs and another layer of her waistcoat. The next step is her cape, the torso, and then the dreaded wrinkle pass (I can't wait to learn something like ZBrush or MudBox for this step in the future!), before posing and texturing.
07 July 2007, 12:15 AM
Another modeling update for Boushh. I added her cape, as well as upper torso and control box (not visible here).
Next step is to merge her into the overall scene and pose her, and then make another pass for wrinkle modeling throughout the model.
07 July 2007, 10:44 PM
Cant belive I missed this.... Looks great, cept for hans head, needs refining and some hair... Nice scene lighing....
07 July 2007, 03:49 PM
Hey Mike, looks really nice!
Is the head/helmet supposed to be this big?...just looking at body proportions.
Awesome job overall, can't wait to see the final shot.
07 July 2007, 08:06 PM
Boushh proportions do look odd, but when you see images of her (or the actual costume itself in person) the helmet is really large.
07 July 2007, 08:08 PM
The scene is looking really good. I think this has been a very positive project for you
07 July 2007, 02:46 AM
Thanks guys. Yeah Dom, the helmet throws the overall proportions of the character off a lot, but it is supposed to be too big on her. It's really noticable if you ever go back and watch Return of the Jedi: in the scene after Han melts out of the carbonite block, when she removes her helmet her hands look like they're barely big enough to support the thing, and her head looks like it's been residing in a cavern!
Hillbilly, first: thanks. Second: you're right, this has been a very positive project and first challenge. I've never tried making anything this complex, so the experience along with reading/watching everyone else's work along the way has taught me an immense amount. I hope I have the time to jump right back into the next HMC and keep it up.
As far as this project goes, I'm taking Airflow's advice and reworking Han's hairline. Once I'm reasonably happy with it, I'll start kicking out the required renders for the final post. I'm not going to have an opportunity to texture this scene before the deadline, but my hope is I can return to it down the road in a couple of weeks and really put the finishing touches on it.
07 July 2007, 05:06 AM
Here is my last WIP post before the deadline.
There are countless lighting additions I want to make, but I just don't have the time right now.
