View Full Version : Trailer park: Mobile Home.
03 March 2003, 01:28 AM
just starting the thread almost have something worth posting. hopefluy be up by tommorrow.
also a quick question does anyone have a close up pic of a trailer hitch?
I cant say I have that shape memorized.
03 March 2003, 02:41 AM
here is the moblie home as it now stands.
Kirt I couldnt quite figure out what the doohicky under the front window was so i just make it into a sorta head light thing.
also dont worry about the unsmooth edges. They are there because i am trying (uncessfully) to stay low poly. when the model is father along I will subdivide to get it smooth.
but besides all that what do you guys think?
03 March 2003, 09:50 AM
Doohicky? Don't use technical terms on me ... hurts my head.
Well, I think this will be pretty good if we can work on the scale a bit. Right now it looks like a Tonka Toy rather than something someone can live in. Check the scale of things on my concept drawing and see if you can't get it closer to that.
It'd take me too long to list all the differences right now. Give it another shot and I'll see if I can't be more helpful with your next update.
Go Go Go! :wip: :D
03 March 2003, 07:35 PM
here is an update moved the tires up into the body of the trailer more. and scaled the hitch so its not as lond as the the whole thing. also made the lamp thing smaller to fit with your original drawing.
03 March 2003, 07:39 PM
here is the image forgot to attach it.
03 March 2003, 04:59 AM
Kirt sorry I know you havent been able to Crit the pic I posted earlier today but I couldnt resist posting this little update.
03 March 2003, 05:26 AM
Good looking trailer JIII
Could you render up a couple of angles with a quick 3 light setup so we can get a good look at the details??? :)
03 March 2003, 06:42 PM
sorry about the low light I love gloomy settings :)
03 March 2003, 06:45 PM
03 March 2003, 05:31 AM
kirt do you want me to model hinges for the door?
03 March 2003, 07:04 AM
Yes, but you need to fix the scale first. It still seems very small, like a child's toy.
03 March 2003, 05:31 PM
sorry to sound dumb but you want the door larger, and the rear window smaller?
I know this must be trying your patience, but I would like a clarification.
03 March 2003, 12:56 AM
Sorry, I should have been more specific. Not a problem, here's a list.
Door - taller & narrower
Windows - smaller
Trailer - longer
Door light - smaller
Reflector (that round thing in front by the door) - larger
Door handler - smaller & fatter
Side panels (corregated) - lower & not as far out from the sides
Rear lights - round not oval : cones not nipples
Get rid of the green. I prefer to see flat shaded gray until the model is complete (easier on the eyes) :D
03 March 2003, 01:12 AM
yeah the green was just so I can tell the edges apart from one another when I am zoomed in real close.
thanks man this makes it so much easyier to have a list.
I will get to work on it right away
03 March 2003, 11:46 PM
here is a slight change in scale.
what you think about this kirt?
03 March 2003, 02:49 AM
I'm sorry, but it still looks pretty much the same to me. I will do my best to get some ortho views for you or at least a paint over for things that need to be adjusted.
03 March 2003, 06:50 PM
kirt sorry this is such a troublesome model.
but here is a side pic if you need it to paint over.
I just realized from looking at this that the the light thing is was too long.
Anyway all peices dont quite match up in this cause I dont want to change much until I have something more to go by.
03 March 2003, 04:25 AM
okay kirt this is a very rough model but... seeing as this has given me so much trouble I thought you might wanna comment on the general shape.
03 March 2003, 08:11 AM
Aside from the door being on the wrong side of the trailor, the basic shape looks pretty good. Really bad lighting on that shot though, I may be missing something.
Use a simple lighting setup when you're modelling. An ambient light would probably suffice. Shadows aren't really necessary.
03 March 2003, 06:31 PM
lol right now the door is on both sides of the trailer so dont worry.
03 March 2003, 03:48 AM
here your most troublesome modeler reporting for duty sir.
tell me what you think of this.
i am thinking the door needs to thin out a bit.
03 March 2003, 08:47 AM
It's looking better. The frame and trailor hitch is too high and the rear tail lights need to be moved in. The lights (if looked at from the rear) should stick out from the edge of the trailor about 1/3.
We will be seeing the underside of this trailor too, so you'll need to fix those wheel wells and I need to provide an underside view.
Back to the old drawing board ... :D
04 April 2003, 03:06 AM
hey kirt have you had time to work on the underside drawing yet?
04 April 2003, 05:02 AM
I think you and I JIII are competing for most troublesome modeller!!!! ;) Its looking good by the way keep goin!
04 April 2003, 06:32 AM
damn I have ignored this model lately. taking a weeks vacation didnt help either ohh well.
I think we should have a prize for the most troublesome (but well meaning modeler).
and here is a small update showing how lazy I have been on this recently.
04 April 2003, 03:15 PM
hahaha, a prize. well your doing well, i can't really crituqe, but keep doin wut your doin :)
04 April 2003, 09:36 AM
It's a good idea to pass the WIP mesh to me time to time to check it out in a close shot. :)
04 April 2003, 05:06 PM
after I get the whole FTP thingy figured out what frmat should I send it in .obj?
04 April 2003, 05:07 PM
if ya need help with the ftp info, just holler, jIII
04 April 2003, 07:03 PM
I think i have it figured out now. thanks for the offer though.
probibly post it later today when I have the time. its a very heavy model 70,000 polys and a good 4.5 megs.
04 April 2003, 05:48 PM
okay ila. it is on the ftp right now, the name is
mobile 2nd try.obj
I unfortunately think I may have uploaded it in binary form. so if it doesnt work I will reupload it, and this time make sure that it is in ASCII.
04 April 2003, 08:34 AM
thanx, I check it out & let you know about that.
if you zip or rar the next files, the d/l speed will increase for me! coz I'm a dialuper! ;)
04 April 2003, 09:29 PM
so am I dude. but this FTP thing seems to work like a charm.
on a 56k I was getting almost 10k a second. so it didnt take that long.
ohh yeah here is a small update.
added windows and the step thingy.
04 April 2003, 03:18 AM
Someone pointed this out to me, I should have noticed it earlier ...
Reduce the bevelled edges on the side edges. They make the side walls appear to be very thick (like the trailor was constructed by LittleTykes (http://www.littletikes.com/toyfinder/default.asp?URL=/toyfinder/products.asp?category=4&C=CAT)).
Also, I think the frame could stand to have it's thickness reduced.

Glad to see it works, just don't go crazy with the hotlinking, ok?
(that goes for you, too, Ila :wip: :wip: )
hehe...I get 3 gigs a month...75 megs, no ads....
04 April 2003, 03:48 AM
no really i kinda know. but not really.
don't worry about me.
04 April 2003, 03:50 AM
it's when you directly link an image to the host, so that it shows the big picture..hehe...
I hear it eats bandwidth, but I'm not really worried, just keep this host just for this project, and I'm fine...
Oh, just to "ensure" that you do that, I check my hostees reguraly....:wip: :wip:
04 April 2003, 03:51 AM
Okay kirt or ila, I understand the beveling comment. I will start work on that problem soon.
But what do you mean about the frame?
can you be more specific please.
04 April 2003, 03:56 AM
The frame is the part that the home, wheels and suspension are connected to. The metal part that holds all of the pieces together. What the trailer hitch is connected to. I think I referred to it as a "box frame" when I supplied the underneath illustration for you to work with.
Each of those metal sections that are welded together to make the frame for the trailer ... their diameter is too thick. Hope that makes sense.
04 April 2003, 04:04 AM
I hope you don't have me assisinated by some brazilian monkey on steroids. but I didn't even know you had done the bottom frame yet.
ahhhgggh "beats head on wall".
04 April 2003, 02:34 AM
here is an update without the beveled edges.
it took me a lot of reworking the frame so it ahs altered the whole pic so there is still some touch-up to do.
I will start working on the frame hopefully have it done soon.
04 April 2003, 03:49 AM
okay here is what I have managed with the frame so far.
one question Kirt or Ila.
the leaf springs brackets, what are they connected to? they kind of disapear in the concept drawing. I just attached them to the frame but it might not be right.
04 April 2003, 12:40 PM
I'm guessing the frame is too...dense?
just a guess, though...
04 April 2003, 05:16 PM
I have figured out my problems with it mostly. and will post it integreated with the main trailer soon.
04 April 2003, 06:07 PM
here is the first integrated version.
sorry about the shadows but you can't really see any detail without them.
04 April 2003, 08:04 PM
That's a really dark render. Hard to see anything on there. From your earlier image I would say move the two frames out by the wheels to give more room for the leaf springs. They should have an arc to them also.
Technically they should be attached to the frame, but in my concept I think I just set them on the inside corners of the frame and indicated that they would bolt to the underside of the trailer. Not really important where they attach, just make it look feasible and functional.
04 April 2003, 03:34 AM
yeah I have found that attached to the trailer they require that the, underside ofthe trailer be brought up way to far, anyway I think I can figure it out.
04 April 2003, 04:44 AM
Okay here is an update.
the top veiw.
04 April 2003, 04:49 AM
put in a few basic textures. just to give a little definition.
04 April 2003, 08:43 PM
okay kirt is there a color scheme you have in mind for this Trailer or do I just use that color pallete and do what looks nice?
05 May 2003, 11:17 PM
Hi koinu. welcome to the board. :) :wavey:
1. you should make a new thread for what you are going to do.
2. we have a concept for trailer, by Kirt, & that is what will fit to our project's style, though your refrence trailer is very nice.
but if you are not so serious for using your model in ALIENZ, then go ahad! :) be my guest. (who knows, maybe after finishing your job we find your trailer more interesting! ;) )
05 May 2003, 11:26 PM
Ila - additional trailers will be needed for the mobile home park. Go ahead and finish the model koinu, but put it in a new thread. Thanks.
05 May 2003, 12:14 AM
Kirt: Will do I have others too...
Ila: love the alien
any C7C for it or aditional info I could use... MaDeuce sent me here and I read all the notes... Serious about this project
05 May 2003, 04:14 AM
nice now you can go start your personal little thread man.
Thats what this nifty little subforum is for.
ohh and kirt/ila what do you think of what I have now?
any major changes that you think need to be made?
05 May 2003, 04:26 AM
some basic texturing.
05 May 2003, 06:47 AM
Looks cool, although I am sorry for jumping your thread... Please forgive me.............:)
05 May 2003, 07:45 PM
lol I don't mind.
05 May 2003, 08:10 PM
here is a little update with some basic texturing.
any comments ?
05 May 2003, 08:32 PM
JIII, Wondering if Kirt has sent you the color discription of the color we need to use. RGB values...... Looks good:bounce:
05 May 2003, 02:58 AM
the way i got the RGB values of those colors was simply create a material in my color channel and then click on each color which tells me the RGB values. (at least in C4D.)
when I have time I will post the RGB values if you would like.
But no kirt has beeen slient as to the colors he wants so i am just using layers so that if anything needs to be changed I can just pull the base easily.
05 May 2003, 03:10 AM
its a little cluttered but I hope this helps.
05 May 2003, 03:49 AM
SWEET that helps a ton.........
05 May 2003, 03:34 AM
hey kirt can I get a few crits here if your not to busy.
05 May 2003, 09:50 AM
It's looking better, but needs some work still. The rear taillights seem to be the biggest flaw right now. I want them to have a antique automobile look and not to intersect the body like you have right now.
They should be of the jet cone design similar to a Cadillac (http://www.screensaverjapan.com/machine/cadillac/cadillac.jpg) or Ford Galaxie (http://www.rival.freeserve.co.uk/shows/images/malvern2.jpg) (maybe a cross blending of both).
I'm picturing it as a red plastic thing with maybe a small touch of chrome and an interior ring of yellow plastic (which would represent the turn signal).
The one on the right side will also include a licence plate frame, but if you can't get it to hang correctly (it sticks out too far from the side) we'll have to move it to the middle somehow.
The little bolts holding up the corrugated side panels can be about half their current size (which will help with the toy scale issue).
The step under the door is too complex looking. Make it a flat solid piece with 3 raised ridges running length-wise (for foot scraping).
The front of the frame and the trailor hitch needs some tweeking. The hitch should be ball shaped and extend out more on the frame (exactly how I want the hitch and frame (http://www.wasillachamber.org/images/02trailer.jpg), a side view illustration (http://www.discounthitches.com/Tow_Tips/ballmount-drop.jpg) and top view (http://www.atvhitches.com/images/products/Combo-twinBall2.jpg)). Those images are a bit small ... but it's the best I could find.
Make the TV arial into tubes instead of rectangular shapes. I think I made it appear too chunky in the concept drawings. It should look almost like it's made from coat hanger wires. Pretty fragile looking and cheap.
Make the wheels look more like this. (http://www.speedwaymotors.com/eCCStoreFront/smi/product_images/thumb/2945021.jpg)
Maybe add a roof vent (http://www.writerguy.com/primitive/img_skid/vent_1.jpg) to break up the void on the top?
I guess that'll keep you busy for a bit, huh? :D
Post an update when you get these things taken care of.
06 June 2003, 01:48 AM
I was gonna post an update today for the first time in a month that it all sucks, so like half of it is gonna get an over haul. Then I will post an update.
just wanted to put this up so you know I am not dead or something.
