View Full Version : Anyone know how the tornadoes were created in "Day After Tomorrow"?

I'm writing a paper on the tornado effect in "The Day After Tomorrow" and can't seem to find the information as to how it was created. I need pretty specific information (i.e. particle systems, any modeling, etc).

Does anyone know how this was done or have a link to help me out?

The tornados were created in Houdini, I think, and rendered using Digital Domain's Voxel Bitch, a volumetric renderer.
Look at this making of video form Digital Domain, there are some great breakdowns.

Yup, the tornado system was very complicated. It used some simple animated geometry in Houdini to control the overall motion which drove clouds and wisps in Voxel Bitch as well as debris with POPs. It was very effective but very complicated too.

Yeah i too got to know that it was done in houdini but what a great work. HATS off to the team of D2 to make these kind of Natural Phenomena.

The tornado team really did a good job on that project, but the water team had lots of difficulty. We made up for that on "Flags of Our Fathers," some of the best and most complicated water we've ever done.
