Hello, dudes, Im going for a second character, Willian Wallace from BraveHeart, the movie is AWESOME. I finished the modelling part, now i have to set the smoth groups and Map it. Maybe i can add some more details later.
The body has: 2135 tris, I can cut a lot of polys on it, cuz it has the body under the clothes...
The sword has: 182 tris, is a lot of polys for a sword, but i think it is one of the most characteristric part of the character ( and it is TOO COOL!!! ) :)
The shield has : 116 tris, but i have no images of it yet.
Now comes my BIG problem.... textures:surprised how many DPIS i should use for the maps? Someone knows a good tutorial for texture painting?
Any C&C are very well welcome.

Hello everyone,
I have been working in the texturies, and came to me some questions. Should we use lights in the scene, or use the texture with self-lumination? If we can use the self-lumination, should we use 50% or 100%?
Im almost done with the face map, and hope send some still by the end of tomorrow.
see ya:wavey:

Im not sure if I should do him with the face painting or not? open to suggestions, but maybe i gonna do both.

you can use lights in your beauty shot. In the viewport pics, you should use only basic lightning. Self-illumination is alright as well, i guess... depends on how your 3d package deals with it...

A nice Mel Gibson you have there. On first sight I thought his legs were to short but It might be also just a trick because of the skirt...

03 March 2003, 06:19 PM
Yes, i think the cloths give this impression, and also cuz his legs are a little bit open. I have another question, for ppl who works in the game field, Can I use 2 sided maps? or it is havier than 1 sided?
PS: It is not a skirt

Is that 2 sided polies? ie texture on both sides or a tris. if so yes it takes twice the time to render in game. Great model, really nice to see the asymetry too. The texture looks good too, but i was wondering, i know its only a wip but are you planning on putting more shading in it (for example in the face that looks more or less finished under the jaw). Personally i like to put as much lighting in the texture as possible (from above) but then i am used to games that do not light the characters other than by the lightmap value. I think this is changing in doom 3 and kreed and some people are already texturing to them. For the challange things are not so clearly defined so its probably a case of specifying the conditions you are texturing to or doing them for the beauty render?

03 March 2003, 11:56 PM
No, I mean, it is a tri poly mesh with no polys inside, so if i use 2 sided maps, it will not use twice more processor right?
And about the map, thnks :D I gonna work better the lights after i finish the basic textures for it, and I also want keep one model with no lighting effect so i can use more lights for the beauty scene. I would like the opinion of u guys about the eyes... Do you think it is too blue? I was not sure, sometimes looks fine, and sometimes looks too bue... it is good to give the character the kind of tragic style of the end of the movie.... anyway. COMENTS PLEASE.
Model has 1996 tris on him, so i gonna add more details later, maybe some alpha hair, and a bit more detils on his shoulder belt.
Another question, the number of ID's that i use can make the model havier? cuz im using more than 19 ID's so far, cuz i think it is easier to break the texture down.
Im using only the 2 map.

Some work on the tesxture, i think the cloths ( qult? ) can be a little bit darker... opinions would be great. I hope i have time to work more on him, end of quarter sucks, too much homework.... maybe later i can post my maya model, it is an englad soldier from the movie, i plan to do some fight scenes for an animation reel.

this looks awesome! I havent see the texture updates.. been busy. I think the cloth is cool, dont think its too dark. might need more contrast? try using more shading overall and more colors. think cold colors in the shadows and warms in the high. that should make him pop more.

nice work though! cant wait to see the final

03 March 2003, 11:08 AM
Well first of all, thanks mr happy pants, im glad to know that u are liking my post, i admire your work a lot and im happy with your coments.
Second here is a just render image, it is not the final version tough. I might make a dirt layer on his legs and arms, maybe some injuries as well. His cloths in the movie are kinda dark, and monochromatic, i think im getting there, ANY SUGESTION ARE VERY WELCOME!!!!
Today I finished my quarter and hope can work on him.... The last couple of days was terrible, just homework and finals, no time for texture work....
Another point that i want to put is, this is the model for the beauty scene, so dont have many shadows in the mesh, cuz im planning to use lights for do it, I might make another version of the texture for the "in-game" mesh.
Should I do the painting that he has on his face or not? I also would like opinions about his eyes, it is too big? Sometimes i feel it is weird, and sometimes i feel it is fine.... so someone help me.
Well, sorry my poor english, im studing to improve it.

hope works....

I would definetly add the face paint.. really would help nail the film character even more. although he looks like gibson as it is so you could go either way. as for adding a dirt layer.. i would think more shading would be a better use of time. the model looks a little on the flat side to me. areas I see that need shading are under the belt/strap. under the skirt on the legs. I would also saturate the colors a little more. I know your going for realism but game engines always like models that are a little on the colorful side. helps the objects read better. oh and the eyes dont look to big to me. keep it up!

Here are some updates...

03 March 2003, 05:20 AM
Woah you got some major warping on those textures, especially around the neck. I would work on that.... Also some textures are very undetailed, I don't know if they are final but you just still work on them alot.

03 March 2003, 06:54 AM
hmm im not sold on the mapping either.. looks like it could use some tweaking. the face paint adds alot from a distance but I think it detracts up close. keep it up

03 March 2003, 07:11 AM
Yep guys, i agree with you, The unwraping is really bad, cuz this is my first real model and i have just learned how I should have done the unwraping.... I tried, but to fix it i have to do almost all the texture work again, and im afraid is too late for do so... anyway, the model should not be used in close ups, but this is not an excuse for a porr job.... I hope fix it after the contest, i gonna start towork on the shodws and highlights, and the dirt map... and than learn how to rig it....
Thanks for the coments.
Im not sure about the face painting yet.... what u guys think?

Second, with face painting

hmmm I like the face paint... although I think it looks best from a distance. if you want a bunch of close ups maybe go with the unpainted version

nice pose! are you going to animate him?

03 March 2003, 07:00 AM
Maybe I will, i have to learn how to do a character rigging first. Probably gonna take so loooong for learn how to put the bones.... Well thanks for the coments. :) Any outher idea for the texxtures, and i still have 150 polys to use any ideas?
