this is the story:

the hero (no specifics yet) is going to try out his new rocket board/ship . the ship is a hovercraft with rockets for forward thrust. there will be two helpers (some type of smaller worker animal maybe a turtle standing on 2 feet or something) they are the mechanics. there is a kind of sarcastic relationship between the three. the hero is cocky/ego, the helpers know he is stupid and laf at him. the hero mounts the rocket ship, it rises up takes off in an uncontrollable manner and smashes into the ground. hero gets up in a drunkken stuper and falls back down. when the ship hits the ground i will smash it into many peices, using dynamics like the star wars pod race (simplified tho) I know the rules said don't spend much time on dynamics, but i needed to teach myself how to do this anyways.
this will be much more understandable with the drawings.

i'll post some drawings later, don't have scanner with me right now. :buttrock:

ok here are is the storyboard (very quick sketches)
and a breakdown of what is happening

1. not sure, maybe intro to scene while actor come in.

2. helpers will probably be mumbling something about how stupid the hero is. the hero is walking towards the ship.

3. the hero is strapping himself into the ship

4. he starts the ships engines and it starts to warm up. the hero orders one of the helpers to unplug his ship from the power terminal. helper runs to do it.

5. the ship lifts up a few feet, the hero's knees bend to compensate lift, also he is pulling down his goggles (all smooth motion). while he is doing this the helpers look at each other and take 2 steps back (they know he is about to crash or something).

6. the ship takes off straight upwards, going way to fast.

7. the ship comes straight down, way to fast.

8 the ship and hero crash into the floor, dynamics shatters the ship. the helpers are chuckling at him.

9. the hero gets up in a drunken stuper, and then falls back down.

10. there is no 10. :buttrock:

added the rig to the ship to do the initial take off test. also added animation to the chord/plug. the chord animation is a joint chain with an ik spline solver atached to a curve. then i extruded a nurbs circle along the curve to form the chord. I don't know how to constrain the end of the curve to the ship, please help if you know how i can do this. the chord is animated by keyframing about 5-6 different vertices. here is a new test:

..using Link constrain..perhaps. then link it to the world when you want it to get separated from the ship and key frame the plug falling down.. did it help at all??

i finally figured out my problem, i was trying to parent/constrain a cv but i found out you have to make it a cluster first, maya won't let you parent a selected cv by itself. dam i'm glad i got that to work saves a lot of time.:airguitar

Wow this is looking very fluid already! Interesting how you've started animating without even having a character yet! I'll have to try that method sometime. Looking forward to updates! :thumbsup:

fasty- i don't even know, i just started animating the rig, i know if i stopped to model something i would get all caught up in doing that and not animate anymore, i'm probably just going to do a very simple model like the winner of the awkward moments challenge did, and just parent that to the rig at some time or another.

i tweaked the right arm a little bit and added a little more animation. srry for the small updates.

ok i have put in the 'helper mechanics.' i decided to make them bots with a door on their chest, when the door opens, a mechanical arm comes out. i've revised the story a little:

when the bot removes the cord from the ship, he rolls back a little and drops it on the floor and his arm retracts back in to his chest. the ship takes off suddenly right towards the second helper bot. it takes off the bot's head and it rolls onto the floor (the head). the bot's chest door opens and his arm comes out and feels around his neck for his head. (kind of frantically). as this is going on the hero flies straight up and comes straight down and crashes. he gets back up in a drunk stuper and falls back down, the bot that had the cord opens his chest door and has a speaker in his mechanical hand, points at hero and it laughs in robot laugh from the speaker. then the end.

ok, i have decided that this idea is not going good enough, i know i can do a lot better, so i am starting over, i have a fresh new idea.. ohh so fresh. i watched toy story 2 and shrek over again to help myself get in the right frame of mind about the character uniqueness i should strive for. i'll pump some new stuff out in the next few days..

ok here is a walktest that i made in a few hours after work tonight, it is still rough, i need to work on weight transfering a bit more. it is also my first walktest ever, so.. maybe a lil' c&c. (don't worry too much about the arms, he will be holding something, like in above pic.

looking cool dude! would be easier to judge if there were another couple of steps or loop this one in the same spot so one could see the full cycle. the back foot seems to slide just sligntly as it bends and moves into the passing position. as u say it need a bit of work on the weight, its looking rather stiff at the moment, but very good for a first atempt none the less.

Looks great, but its a little big, maybe easier to watch at a more Download friendly size. like 300*400 or something.
