View Full Version : Simulation of massive car movements

For a movie project, I need to animate a quite huge amount of cars driving over the streets of a future resort. I saw a small video on this but dunno where it was.

Is this kind of technique useful or just crap if compared to animate those by hand?

Up to now, I've no concept on how to get a goal in this. Maybe I need reactor to animate tyres and antennas and particle flow to simulate the routes to be driven; along a spline or whatever.

Anyone an idea or suggestions?

Anselm had something like it in his reel, but no car physics, just the traffic rules.
It might be better to create a few hand animations of the cars going different routes (if there are differing routes, of course), and then add car after car following these animations. I'm not sure how many cars you mean when you say "huge amount", but the duplication method could work for up to a couple hundred cars if you plan your workflow and scene setup efficiently.
Another thing you could do if the camera angle permits it is just have a couple dozen cars driving by and loop the animation. If it's only a couple of loops, the repetition shouldn't be noticeable.
