View Full Version : March/April 2003 Official Animation Challenge Guidelines - Mar 13th - Apr 30th

03 March 2003, 12:15 PM
Welcome once again to the CGTalk challenges. First off I must say the "Races of Middle Earth" challenge was a HUGE success! We had a record number of entries!, and because of that we have some very very happening things in the mix that will sure to keep a smile on your faces for the rest of the year :). That out of the way let's get to what you all really want... The next challenge topic.

It was a landslide! The council wanted to have loads of fun this time around, and we hope you'll have another fun-filled month with our next challenge. We will be making the challenges a bit longer from this point on, so this challenge will be a month and 1/2 long. I've noticed much better results with and extended date.

Welcome to our 3rd Animation WIP challenge...

This month's Challenge is entitled "Whoops!!!"

- Whoops!!! -

Based on the same idea as the Classic Challenge [insert url here] The hero/villain attempts to execute their strange powers and unfamiliar powers. Suddenly something goes horribly wrong and their power backfires.

Here's what stated as the final rules for the Whoops!!! Challenge

** Animations are to be 15 seconds MAXIMUM, 10 seconds MINIMUM

** All animations should be 320x240 or less

** Quicktime with Sorenson 3 a must (Sorenson 3 codec should be free within the Quicktime install) As a side note DiVX animations are welcomed for PC viewers, but only for the final.

** Please use a single camera for staging
- do not use camera cuts
- if you need to pan, truck in, rack focus, etc that is okay as long as it does not take attention away from the animation

** Default 3pt lighting is recommended, where only the key light needs to cast a shadow
- remember that we want to SEE your animation

** Please use dialogue audio clips provided and *only* those
- pick from one of the six audio clips provided

There will be 6 audio clips to choose from, each ranging from about 4-5 seconds in length. The dialogue will be this:

"NOW! Now, I will show you my power!"

The 6 clips will include 3 male and 3 female samples. You can choose from one of the following:

Small sounding Male
Average sounding Male
Big sounding Male

Small sounding Female
Average sounding Female
Big sounding Female

**NOTE: Audio clips will be uploaded here in the coming few days.

** Sound Effects audio is optional
- if adding audio fx be sure that it adds to the scene and does not distract from the animation
- try to keep the sound effects levels in tune with the audio clip, we don't want any booming and loud explosions that deafen viewers

** Basic geometry is recommended
- you don't have to have a fancy model to focus on great animation

** Blendshapes/Morph Targets are allowed for this challenge

** To avoid server bandwith issues we recommend keeping your test animations below 150K, anything above this is problematic (this of course applies only to those people that will be uploading their WIP to our servers)

** A final reminder that the focus of the challenge is animation. Try not to get caught up in details concerning hi-res models, blendshapes, intricate lighting, dynamics, etc. Final judging will be made only on the animation and acting displayed. Please do not forget the reason for the challenge. The Animation Challenge is to showcase and improve upon your animation skills in an open and inviting friendly forum.

** Have FUN!

The Challenge starts Mar 13th, 2003 and will run until April 30th, 2003 Midnight GMT

An excellent idea was suggested last month to have a countdown timer located on the cgchallenge site. This will be implemented shortly after. You will never be guessing when the challenge is nearing its end! (providing you check the cgchallenge site ;))

additional notes:

- Please provide some form of a storyboard, doodles are fine.

Remember that this is a WIP challenge, so it is a requirement to show the steps you used, and

help out as much as you can, of course you're not obligated to, but it will help those that need it

There are however some restrictions to prevent unnecessary issues:

Animations cannot be uploaded at this time to the new challenge site, so you must use the forum,

If you wish to show a larger animation do so by linking it from your site.
Keep in mind filesizes. . .this is to help those people with slow connections.

When you begin a new thread please use the following syntax

Whoops!!!"- Hero/Villian - [your name]

so for example

Whoops!!!"- Villian - lildragon

And that's it,

Now on with the show :)
