View Full Version : "A Thousand Words" Short Film

05 May 2007, 05:00 PM

Hi everyone!

Just thought I'd post the link to my latest short, which I made for an contest (to win a sweet camera!!). There was a 3 minute running time limit.
Shot on miniDV and onlined using the techniques described in Stu Maschwitz's DV Rebel's Guide. I tried to keep digital effects minimal and realistic.

The contest theme was future technology, and since it was at a stock photo website, it got me thinking about how we might take pictures in the near future. Then, for some reason I started imagining a future where pictures might be the most important thing, something worth saving, something more valuable than anything else...

Until the contest is over, I think it can only be hosted there, so the link is below. Afterwards, I'll have a higher res version on my website (which needs updated badly).

This is the type of short I like and that 'camera' she is using was pretty well done ... very cool concept. Exactly what I needed to get me brainstorming before I leave for this morning's roadtrip. Thanks! I love work that draws emotion. You did it here.

  from this side of the peanut gallery.

Hey Sean,

Great atmosphere in this, its all nicely shot and edited too...the music goes very well to it, and so refreshing to see some long takes in a short.

thanks for the nice words! :) i'm glad everyone's liking it!

here's some screenshots of some of the effects work.

If the movie link is a bit messed up, I'll have it fixed as soon as possible. They are currently picking the finalists in the contest, and some of the stuff on the website is acting a little funny. It should work though.

I was picked as one of the 12 finalists!

i can feel as if this leads to something larger -- as if this is the intro to some sort of post apocalyptic future-esqe movie -- the only thing that bothered me was the wallet (i would have picked something different, then made it look more weather beaten)

nicely done though, hope you win.

I came in 2nd in the "Not Funny" category, behind that awesome motion graphics piece that was plugged here a couple weeks ago!

Congratulations on that one, thatís great.

Ok, I will come in here with my crit I think.

First off...criting process is very hard for me, I really donít like to do it...but its very useful to have people say very honest things about you film.

The main character, I donít know if sheís been walking for many days or what her background story is to this point where we first see her at the start of this film...but the makeup looks like its been put ontop of a very very clean person. I know how hard it is, but I would have that person not have a shower or bath for 14 days and then maybe do some makup ontop of that. This depends though on where the character has been up to this point.

Gotto agree with amannin, it is a wonderful build-up...and I love love your long take decisions you have taken with the editing. The music is first rate too... and the compositing work is first rate. The composition is great as you dont go too close to her (lot of films suffer from being way to close, yours does not) and hand held camera works very well too (its not too wobbly at all)

i love your short! really great concept development with the holographic camera/pda thing. Im trying to sit down and plan out a short right now and I agree that your pacing on this is great. I think the end rising action (with the overhead jets and music build) could be pushed a bit more... but still, great expression. Thanks for sharing
