View Full Version : What's a better choice?

When buying a computer for 3D, which would be a better choice. A single Xeon 3.06 w/2 gigs of RAM, or A dual 2.8 Xeon w/1 gig of RAM?

Also...how does the AMD 2600+ compare to the pentium 4 Xeon 3.06 in 3D apps?

Question 1: A Dual 2.8B Xeon on the E7505 Chipset. You can always upgrade to a 3.06, or 3.2 later as well as add more ram. Remember that all Xeons have support for Hyperthreading, unlike the Pentium IV's.
Question 2: It depends on the app. You'd be surprised, but the 2600+ XP will actually render faster then the 3.06 P4 in certain applications, due to lack of SSE2 optimizations and Hyperthreading support.
On average though, the 3.06 HT would kick the 2600+ XP's ass. If you want a more fair comparison, compare the 3000+ XP to the 3.06 HT. Thats more of an even fight, both pricewise and performance wise.
