I am wondering if anyone hase made any interesting cloud formations using Vue. I am trying to make a hurricane vortex and I am trying to piece together different renders of clouds, but this is taking too much of my time and is not giving me the desired result. If anyone could help me with this that would be fantastic.

Here are some of the formations I am trying to achieve...

Wow those are nice clouds. I don't know the only way i can think of creating those in Vue is to possibly piece a bunch of Meta Clouds together, but that would be very time consuming. Using a Particle system in C4D or Max would probably be easier.

What are they going to be for. If they are not animated, then it would probably be easier to paint them by hand.

How was the top vortec made it looks like either a satellite image or something made in Maya or Max.

Just a thought - creating an animated greyscale map of a swirly vortex, then apply that to a terrain with clipping and a cloud material might give you a starting point. I've no idea whether Vue supports animated height maps or not, but worth a shot.

AS NICK SAID.... (particularly with the top most image), create some gray scale images in photoshop (render clouds and use a twirl type filter to create a vortex) export that and use it to make a terrain, and texture that with some sort of cloud texture or gradiants going from white to dark blue. Doing this will give you the ability to create the eye of the tornado, streach and thicken the clouds..rotate and animate etc.

Heres an example...took me 10 mins to make...You could texture it a whole lot better.

The latest e-on newsletter gives a hint about creating this type of cloud.

yepp! that is the trick..stupid me..
I myself was trying out the turbulence with spiral noise..but no luck..when all that is needed
is to replace the density channel with spiral noise.

check my new thread about shaping spectra clouds with image maps!
just some samples But Not to exactly resemble The vortex clouds that is mentioned here, just something simular to show that it can be done with image maps or even animations, it also needs some color tweaking if I can figure that one out in the function editor.

The only colour parameter you can change for volumetric cloud layer is the density colour in the advanced material editor. No gradients, just a single RGB value. Hope this will change in the future. In the meantime a little play with fog, haze, sky and sun decay colours should lead to nice colour variations.

yepp I have realized that itīs most impossible to change the color on spectral clouds with a gradient for example they really should put that option in to next version, and of course perhaps some more shading and advanced light scattering controls, all with options to set the cloud hight color and light angles, diffusion etc.. that would really enhance the realism more and
give the appearence of darker blue gray cloud bottoms and a more golden luminous cumulus top that would be sweet :)

It took I while to getting it to look right with image maps, I have tried it before but it didīnt show up at all and I then figured it wasnīt possible until the newsletter today proved it to be possible.
Im gonna check up how to apply animation maps aswell I will probably do an animation with Lightwave procedurals..or if I can get hold of a good satellite animation of some clouds.

Using Image maps to drive the density has itīs uses, for example painting a map that can be used for fog in specific areas over a misty hill perhaps, or punching holes in the clouds, I donīt think it will be useable or possible for godrays thou.

Yepp I have seen that one before and nice tutorial about punching wholes in the sky for godrays, However I just discovered that Godrays also works with imagemaps and it looks good.

Iīll try and post an example of that tomorrow..
