View Full Version : "Roadeo" - Jonas Nöll

Hi folks, my name is Jonas Nöll and I just finished the second term on the GERMAN FILM SCHOOL ( Since we had to produce a 3d animated short movie on our own, and I am a huge fan of Blur's Gopher Broke, I decided to try something similar. I am already quite familiar with modelling and texturing, but this film was my first ever experience with rigging, animation, compositing, lighting and everything else. In fact it is my first shortmovie. My main focus was on the technical part, for the animation I lacked some time and experience in the end, so the animation is maybe not the best ;) I hope you like it anyway.

First off, congrats on completing your short. Quite impressive for your first time out. As you mentioned, the animation could use some improvement but I think you did a good job of bringing everything together. My biggest critique is that the story is maybe a little too close to your inspiration. Would have been nice to see a bit more originality, maybe some kind of twist. Over all though, you should be proud. Nice work.

Thanks for your comment! Yeah you are quite right about the story, it could have used some larger differences from Gopher Broke. Well but contrary to Gopher Broke it has a happy ending ;) As said I am not trying to become a great storyteller or filmmaker, my main aspects are the modelling, texturing, rigging, lighting etc, so mostly technical parts.
Any more opinions? As a student I would really like to hear your feedback, to improve myself...

Heya =)
I love the look of the movie! It is really amazing that you did this all by yourself in a few months. Would love to work with you on a project together after you got you diploma! I am looking forward to see you next movie!

Hey Jonas
I think you did a great job in Texturing and modeling, everything in your short looks great; if you're not that pasionate about animation then i think you have a great piece. By the way i loved the mustang!! Can you post on how you did the modeling and texturing of it ?

wish you the best

Very nice looking textures, particularly, on the old car and truck. I liked the lighting as well.
I felt the main character needed some work: His movements were much too stiff and robotic. His design and his movements made him seem almost creepy instead of cute and cuddly. He needed to be more dynamic with some secondary movements, and some squash and stretch. I'm sure you'll improve your animation with more experience. -Best.

First of all thanks for your replies, finally some feedback ;) I'm glad you all seem to like it.

webhep: Yeah you are right, as said most of the animation was done in a few days. Nonetheless I spent much time with developing the character. What you said about the character is looking "creepy" may be the case because I had some problems in the end with rendering his fur. Somehow mental ray always crashed while rendering, I'm still figuring out the problem. Here you can see his character developing steps: (

Ajouz: Here is a little image that shows his modeling. It was done with polymodelling only. Since I wanted the Mustang to look old and rusty I decided to unwrap it completely. I spent quite some time by painting relatively large scaled texturemaps (about 2048 some of them). The modeling and unwrapping was done with 3dsmax. (

First off, I have to say the short looks spectacular. The lighting, texturing, and modeling is great! As great as you did on everything else, I would spend some time in the future learning a little more about animation or get some people to help you if you do a short in the future. As far as the animation goes everything moved way too slow. There were too many subtleties, not enough exaggeration, and because of it the character really didn't seem to have much personality. His expressions were a bit cliche` and unnecessary. I think that expression of your character pondering something and getting an idea was used too many times. It's also been used in about every short I've seen on this site. Overall though great job. It looks outstanding! Best of luck to you.

Thanks a lot for your feedback, I really appreciate it. The thing with the animation is absolutely right. I first hat to find out that good animation is quite fast. I already speeded up the film about 20%, it was even slower in the beginning. Maybe I should have speeded it up even more or deleted some unnecessary stuff. I will definitely practice animation, but somehow I feel more attracted to the technical stuff. Nonetheless I should practice my alrounder skills ;)
