I believe most explosions are live action fire sequences composited into footage. Morphing is done in a program like Elastic Reality.
I don't know of any specific tutorials but check out
Almost 100% of his reel is done in AE.

Jus one tip
Render your 3D images in layers (separated plates) an example foreground, subject and background, this way when you composit you can fix some problems with lighting and color, and insert some live action effects or cg effects generated in AE, a good software to do some 2D particle effects is Wondertouch Particle Illusion, which is great for smoke, fire, explosions and some particle fx like magic trails and so on.
check out www.wondertouch.com, particle illusion is the same particle engine built in Combustion.
Using RPF and RLA for compositing is also good option, you can add 3d fog and some other effects in post which is less time consuming.
