I'd like to get some critiques on the current state of my model. I have yet to break symetry or add in characteristic wrinkles. I plan to do that once I get a good face shape-likeness. I also plan to model his prison jumpsuit and classic face mask. All crits welcome.

looks like a good start but the cheeks on the final stage mudbox model look like they're pulled in a bit far...

critique away...

Hey Adam,

His right eyelid needs to be brought in on the outside.
Try to part his lips a bit

Photo textures or painted ones? Geo or rendered hair for the ... hair?

Keep up the amazing work :)

thanks to robo3687 and cgad, i incorporated your comments into my current version the best i could. I'm going to work more on the parted lips later today. tear the model apart!

hey how s going ?

i wanted to say that you are having a good start with you model, you might need to tweak it little bit ... before making a character, you have to think about the structure that is underneath the skin. Meaning the skull first, after, think about where the muscle go , and the skin after. Rough it out, and play with the proportion after. i also see that you made some detail under his eye, i wouldn t do any detail until i will get the proportion right.
Making a celebrity face, is a bit hard, you have to nail every single shape point of the face.
Remember also that everyone know the way it should look like.
Here is something that i have done for u in Photoshop to show you what has to be change about proportion.
I hope that will help u. Remember don t hesitate to ask your fellow student at VFS to give you honest critic ! That what s VFS is all about !
Good luck on your demo

first of all, thanks very much for the time you took, Terence. Its a really good critisizm. I didn't spend enough time on the base mesh before sculpting it. I think your did not scale the mudbox image big enough, thats why it doesnt match. I am modeling with an FOV of 25 on the camera. Is this right? I think that is the most important thing to consider when matching a photo. I included my composite of the reference with the model so you can see what I mean. I think the proportions are correct. When I posted the last images I didnt bother to match the angles exactly either. Thanks again for your time, man. You are a huge help and encouragement.

please critique away!

I'm currently about to go into to zbrush to see what I can get in there...

Not much work done in the past few days. I'm busy putting together my demo reel at school. The primary forms are getting better, but still need work, like in the lips and cheeks. Please comment about anything you see wrong (or right, so I don't mess it up!)

Thanks ahead of time.

Thats really good! superb

Thanks for the enthusiasm and encouragement.

I think I'm satisfied with the likeness now. I'm going to model his jumpsuit tomorow and fix the eyeballs before I render it out for my demo reel. I still need to make a bump and spec map. I'll have time to texture it more once school's over. Right now, there's just a texture projection from the rederence photo. It doesn't hold up from other angles. I'm going to look through Max Kor's Night Elf texturing tutorial on the front page for some texturing concepts. Any advice is welcome.

I would love to hear any advice about the best way to get in the fine wrinkles where I want them (Zbrush the bumpmap possibly). The old computer can't handle doing that in mudbox. Comments and Critiques encouraged!

simply perfect man, the likness is good, I can't wait for the bumps and textures

04 April 2007, 01:45 PM
Yes, nicely done on the sculpting of the face! It is unmistakably him!

04 April 2007, 03:16 AM
I think the modeling is looking great. I would make the eyes not 100% white though. That looks kinda weird.

04 April 2007, 04:33 AM

worked on the piece as a whole. more facial details, temp lighting.

to do:
bump map
spec map
HDRI light
skin shader

please, critique away!

Awesome work, no crits from me at the moment looking forward to your updates :)

04 April 2007, 12:04 PM

This is the piece as it will show on my VFS reel. Maps are rushed, but I ran out of time. Please critique, as I'll be working on this until the deadline.

04 April 2007, 03:47 PM
that's looking great adam! can't wait to see it with shaders. the only thing looks a tad off is the right eye. it looks like it's drifting a bit and he has a lazy eye, but you're more familiar with the reference so disregard if it's correct. great work man!

04 April 2007, 07:34 PM
yeah, Mr. Hopkins does actually have a lazy eye. I'll check to make sure it isn't *too* lazy

04 April 2007, 11:54 PM
I feel your 2nd to last update was the best. With the new update, his face looks more lumpy and fat. The only crit for the 2nd to last update seems to be...did you use a normal map rendering? It looks like one of the color values was reversed. That, or the lighting was off and just flat.

Good progress thus far, however. Keep up the good work!

04 April 2007, 07:55 AM
...finishing my demo reel for school. I didn't have time to finish the model compeltely for the reel, but it's on there. Check it out for a turnaround, btw @ (

I realized that the brain case was not wide enough on top and his had was a bit flat from a few angles, fixing the shape of the nose and forehead before i start texturing.

04 April 2007, 08:05 AM
i can't help but feel his right cheek pushes in too far......dont get me wrong...its great....its just the right cheek looks odd

You have a very good model that meets the requirements of the challenge.
If you have not done so already, you should post it on the voting thread:

If not Ill post it myself.
