View Full Version : Need help modelling a low poly game female

this might be the wrong forum to ask this is in, if that is the case then I appologize and ask that you point me in the right direction.

On to my question, I'm working on a small independant game (fighting game) with a group of friends and I'm responsible for both concept work and modelling the characters. I've only really modelled inatimate objects up until now, I attempted to model one character before but it didn't turn out very well.

Basically this time I need to model a female warrior character for this game, keeping the triangle count to around 3000. My problem is that I really dont know where to start outside of getting anatomical reference photos and/or drawings.

I'm wondering if anyone here knows of a good resource for character modelling, either a web tutorial or a book (that I can obtain in Canada). Something that hopefully goes step by step so I can really get the methods and techniques down so I can apply them to future projects hopefully.

My name is Savnac, and I am very new to modeling in 3-D. I have just purchased Modo 203,and was wondering if anyone had a starter tutorial for me to follow as a guide. Now I will develop my onw kinds work flow, however I wish aia could find that one person whom could point me in the right direction.

umm, i dunno if this will help at all, most likely not because of the 3000 count, but if you ever need to model a little bit more high end character, I have found Z brush's zspheres to be amazing. In essence, you simply build the character out of balls that are connected to one another, and then hit mesh and it shells itself around everything. I can make something that would take me hours to model in max or maya in minutes. I modeled and textured a creature in under an hour with it. Its a great program to get to know. Just figured Id throw in my two cents. Other than that, Just make a really basic like, character out of boxes. One box for upper torso, one for lower, one for bicep, one for forearm, one for hands, etc. once you have your box guy, then just start either using the connect tool or the cut tool and just start adding more detail to it. Thats pritty much all you want to do. Oh, and photo referance is good, but dont try and match it up exactly, cuz it will never match up exactly without looking really weird. Good luck.

Thanks for responding back too my post. Sorry for my typos. I do have ZBrush 2, however I do not understand how to get my head around it, so I moved on too Modo/Maya, I do plan on adding it too my pipeline workflow, however, I was looking for some type of guide to get me up and running inregards to me starting to model "Cartoon Characters". I am so behind on my goals till it's not funny. I already work in the industry doing 2-D work with companies out there. So this change for me is really - to get me into modeling in the 3-D world just to have it under my belt, it is it's the next progression. I blame teh spirit of Santa for this. I have always wanted to make toys out of Cartoon sort of things.

I have learned that some people whom are really good and have great skills lack the ability to share the info with other artist whom are trying to learn this art form, I am not really sure why this is but I can only hope that I run into some person whom will just help get me pointed into the right direction with Modeling Cartoon Characters, with either "Modo or Maya" I am aware of most learning centers like The Gnomonworkshop/ Digital Tutors and some others but I also try and reach out ot the community as well you never know whom you will come across.

I may invest into "Softimage" in the future, but as of now I have to concentrate on the programs that I have at this time.

The thing is I need to try and learn at least 2 of the 3, so if I am faced with an offer, I can go either or. Companies have specific Modelers that uses certain kinds of software that they are good at and I just want my options to be open so I can model in 2 different worlds or maybe even 3 if I am lucky, however I just have to get past the learning curves with the right kind of learning tools to help me along the way.
