Ok so this will be my first entry to to the hardcore modeling challenges, this one seems fun I couldnt resist. Hopefully I am able to take this one all the way to completion. Anyway I did some googling on Angelina Jolie and managed to find a pair of pretty good images I could use for front and side profiles. They seem to match up pretty well with a bit of tweaking photoshop. Here it is:

The beginnings of Lara
03 March 2007, 03:15 PM
nice!!....focus on herEyes...I think if you get that ( and her beautiful jawLine, lips and nose ) you'll be in business...
03 March 2007, 09:30 PM
Ok so im not seeing much resemblance at the moment .. but im pretty happy with the base mesh. i can start working on matching the model once i get into mudbox
03 March 2007, 11:13 PM
Yes, the key to this whole comp is the eyes. Although it is incredibly hard to capture it...
03 March 2007, 12:10 PM
Ive updated the typology of the wireframe and tweaked the model abit further to match the reference photos before i take it into Mudbox. Also ive given a little overview of the modeling process.
03 March 2007, 12:51 PM
After about 2 hrs worth of mudbox, working with the reference photos.. I still cant see much likeness yet though .. hopefully after more sculpting it looks better.
03 March 2007, 01:40 PM
notBad progress...but I think the nose could use some work...her nose is more like a pearShape...and from what I can see w/ your MB model, it's lacking that.... I see that you did try to indicate it in yourBase mesh,...but from theSide, those edges are too far back....making it flat....
I see a few morePoints, ( like the lips ) ..but otherWise it's pretty good.....
03 March 2007, 11:45 PM
yo Harin dude, this is coming on well, I think theres tweeks that need to be made to the face. If I get the chance I will do a more indepth analysis of where I think the tweeks should be by doing a paint over like i did for james comparing the reference images :) great start though dude :D

Did abit more on this model today, working on some of the features. Theres still quite abit of areas that need fixing, ie the bridge of the nose at the top and the forehead but it seems to be coming together now with some likeness i think? . Gotta get back to some of my uni work now!
03 March 2007, 10:02 AM
coming on well dude your very close, just keep working at it, i think once you apply some texture to it, she will look great!
03 March 2007, 10:19 AM
Cool work Harin! I reckon you should square off the chin a bit and define it a little, maybe sort out the corners of the lips to make them a bit more natural as well. Coming a long nicely, once you get some eyelashes on her and maybe some eye textures you'll see the likeness a lot better, well thats what I found anyway.
Oh and if your unsure how to model a braid check this (http://www.christerb.com/tutorials/maya_modelbraid/index.html) out.

Hey guys thanks for the comments :)
James your right about the chin and jawline, also the corners of the lips still need some work. I keep finding new things to tweak on this everyday .. Might have to put it on hold abit so i can get back to doing some uni work.
03 March 2007, 10:17 PM
Yes, I couldn't do mine this week cos of the old uni workload, looking forward to getting back on it this weekend :)
03 March 2007, 10:47 PM
Oh yeh and thanks for the link to the braid tutorial! Should definitly come in handy. Look forward to seein some more of ur updates.

No problem, glad to share it :)

So everytime i think im nearly there with the model i find new areas that need tweaking... I think ive learnt an important lesson in this challenge. Not to rely on ortho photos too much! Since the front photo i used has distortion i think model is abit off in terms of scaling and proportion.
Anyway I did a quick render in maya and composited angelina jolies eyes and eyebrows onto the render in photoshop. I think its getting there but i see some more tweaks that need to made . After that ill start detailing the model and gettin in those real eyes and brows as well as the hair

Another test with the lara croft hair. Composited with a screen shot from the film. Seems to be matching up pretty well.
04 April 2007, 12:11 PM
veryNice looking....I see that the corners and the top of the lips can use someMore tweaking....and the ears look alil thin ( not enough volume ) .....keep it coming!!
04 April 2007, 12:45 PM
Those famous lips are proving to b so tricky lol i agree they still dont look right ill try sort that out in the next update along with the ears. :)
04 April 2007, 06:00 PM
realy good work :) iam so intrested how looks the finish...
04 April 2007, 11:19 PM
Little update, dont think i will have be able to do any texturing on this one since ive got quite abit of uni work i have to catch up on. Detailing to come soon, C&Cs welcome!
04 April 2007, 04:34 AM
its certainly coming along, although the nose looks a little odd in that last one...too fat in the middle or something....
also i wouldn't worry too much about the texturing, its not the focus of the challenge anywhoo
04 April 2007, 11:09 PM
thanks robo missed that one! It was a little bit thicker in the middle than it should be. Fixed for the next update.
04 April 2007, 03:00 AM

and thnx for the refrence

You have a very good model.
You should post it on the main thread.
