View Full Version : Mermaid, Pascal Blanché (3D)

03 March 2003, 03:13 PM (

long time I didnt post anything here ;)

03 March 2003, 03:22 PM
I love the details (in the jewelry and the sinews visible at the elbow), only towards the hands, the details seem to stop and the fingers look too round, and lacking any detail. Otherwise, the look of the mermaid is unique, fortunately not the typical "blonde caucasian human". Good work!

03 March 2003, 03:24 PM
 Is all I gotta say about that. I love her outfit! And nice concept on her head with the tentacles and such.

03 March 2003, 03:40 PM
awsome mermaid...the detalis are great also the light...
the only thing i hade to say is that i got a little feeling of cartoon over the tentacles..

but still love it! :scream:

03 March 2003, 03:50 PM

You may want to check your image links in Gallery 1 of your website Pascal. The last images just bring up one jpeg again and again.

03 March 2003, 03:51 PM
WOW! this one is so cool!! Reminds me a bit of the water people in zelda.. But damn..thats some fine lighting u got going on there! I love the tentacles on her head as well! I agree with the hand crits, but still, it is a tremendous work of art!

03 March 2003, 03:54 PM
I'm waiting for some details on this model...

hurry up Pascal...

just kidding :wip:

03 March 2003, 03:54 PM
Awesome work Pascal!

Could we see some more angles and some wire maybe?
The one thing that is the deformation of the tentacule over her shoulder it's a bit weird! But really cool!

03 March 2003, 03:54 PM
GREAT!! , i love the weight of the tentacles and the pearlescant skin. One hell of a character Sir :P

03 March 2003, 03:56 PM
OMFG!! You are one talented ***** pascal! I love this piece of work! ;)

03 March 2003, 04:00 PM
That is superb! a totally unique, and inspiring spin on an existing mythical character. beautifully done. I applaud you sir.:applause:

BTW, What .app, or .apps do you model in, and use?

03 March 2003, 04:01 PM
Your name is a warranty Pascal. Nothing to say, you always amaze us.

03 March 2003, 04:02 PM
Pascal my friend,
that's a beautifull piece man.

you've outdone yourself :)

just one little thing that bugs me and that's the suctioncups on the tentacle that's draped over her shoulder, they look a little deformed.

other then that, BIG THUMBS up man.

glad to see you're back on track.

03 March 2003, 04:04 PM
Wow....look nice, and the detailling are attract me too.....but i can saw something like the XSI demo character...Anyway,maybe its just my own opinion lar...

Keep post, thanks

03 March 2003, 04:07 PM

03 March 2003, 04:10 PM
beautiful work! i love the details on her jewelry and her unique look!

03 March 2003, 04:11 PM
Great model !
But i don't feel the pascal blanché style !
(je trouve le rendu trop brut pas aussi travaillé que tes oeuvres precedantes).

03 March 2003, 04:14 PM
Very cool design. I love the detail and decor of her jewelry as well as her outfit. Its nice and unique. Great work man! :applause:

03 March 2003, 04:15 PM

... O mio Dio!!!

... My God!!! Now I could change job, and be a baker.

03 March 2003, 04:28 PM
Pascal: i get the same problem in Gallery 1. after the thumbnail of Arcanum XIII, the remaining 8 thumbnails open a window showing Arcanum XIII instead of what they should.

i really like this mermaid concept, btw. :)

03 March 2003, 04:33 PM
Really great pick Pascal!

03 March 2003, 04:33 PM
Your style is so warm and inviting. How do you achieve that soft, realistic look? in your texture? or just mad detail in the model.

Either way, its breath taking.

03 March 2003, 04:41 PM
I get the XSI character name it call MANTA ?! :bounce:

03 March 2003, 04:44 PM
wow, that one is good! The elbow bends naturally, the skin is nice and detailed with some (but not excessive) variation and the jewlery is very detailed and fits well.

03 March 2003, 04:46 PM
wowowowo!!! it's beautifull !!!
how did you build the belt???? tell us.
please, show us the wires???

03 March 2003, 04:55 PM
OMG.... I must be sick... coz she is so sexy for me... that's really acractive eeee... underwater thing :)

03 March 2003, 05:00 PM
Wow very very nice. This is very close to a character i have been working on for an animated short. But i think you pulled it off way better than i could have very nice work. Can we see some wires?

03 March 2003, 05:01 PM
Lovely work! Very nice design and modelling.

Best regards.

03 March 2003, 05:19 PM

03 March 2003, 05:50 PM
what are cg model kits can you give us a preview of what is
whats the scoop

03 March 2003, 06:30 PM
Great as usual!
What i love the most is the colours (and the nice curves of course...).
I just find the texture around the elbow a bit weird (is it a tattoo or is the skin funny ?)

03 March 2003, 06:32 PM
beautiful work as always.

03 March 2003, 06:41 PM
This one is fabolous! Great, so f*** great! I love the texturing of the backround (simplicity of mermaid tex also is  ), lighting (great mood!) and modeling (could be done on 3dsmax? Are you still working on it?) Great job and comeback!

03 March 2003, 06:52 PM
May i summarise everyones opinion, and say once again, AWESOME CHARACTER! She is not very pretty, but i guess for her species, she is! The tentacle suckers are stretched a litle abnormally at some points. Was this your intention?
Can't wait to see more.
:applause: :applause: :applause:

03 March 2003, 06:55 PM
da-am... shes sweet!

Any chance we could see a wireframe version?????????????

03 March 2003, 06:55 PM
looking sweet.... maybe a few suggestions...I feel it needs a little more color and maybe...alter the lighing abit to create more drama in the image...I have attached a link to a quick paintover...hope you don't mind...I always find it easier to see it rather than read it.....anyway nice work...

03 March 2003, 07:16 PM
can we see some more angles please........

03 March 2003, 07:16 PM
Now this is what I call a freakin' pic!!! The pose just makes it sweeter

03 March 2003, 07:19 PM
Beautiful

I echo the sentiments expressed above...can we see some different angles please, and more of those sumptuous details :)

03 March 2003, 07:27 PM
Ouah c'est super beau ! C'est tjrs du Max ?

03 March 2003, 07:30 PM
The modelling, lighting and texturing is great, so I wont bother with any further comments on that, what I feel I must really commend you on however, is the SRTONG and unique character design, we need more of this sort of thing, good job

03 March 2003, 07:41 PM
Amazing Pascal

I do feel though that the pose could be a little more dramatic then it currently is. Maybe some of the fingers curled a little more to get more feeling of the character out of them.

Also the back being arched and the held moved closer at the neck as if she is looking closely at the floating glowy might add some more drama.

Just my thoughts. Great even if you leave it as it is

03 March 2003, 07:48 PM
Wow pascal very great work...many details, amazing lightning too:thumbsup:
my little boy Antonin is born!!

(hope to see some work of your son soon :p

03 March 2003, 08:02 PM
WOW this looks great excellent job there Pascal.

03 March 2003, 08:05 PM

03 March 2003, 08:06 PM
First I have to agree with everybody else. Your work is always top notch and this proves you right again. The only suggestion I might add is that the tentacles on the jelly fish seem to get less transparent to closer to their ends they get. Since they don't get smaller in diameter I would assume that you would keep the same transparency. But what do I know its your gorgeous work not mine.

03 March 2003, 08:25 PM
Superb! Excellent! What more can I say? Oh yeah....any chance of you donating a portion of your talent to the needy?

03 March 2003, 08:33 PM
Not much to say except it's great to see you post again.
You made my day. And everyone around me as well.

Michael Chen
03 March 2003, 08:35 PM
Nice, has she got a name?

I like the detail

03 March 2003, 08:37 PM
wonderful dude
I really like your style, I admire you more than most other high level CG artists man, keep it up, very cool stuff!

03 March 2003, 08:41 PM
wow, this is such a great model! awesome details and feel to it.

03 March 2003, 08:45 PM
I am glad to see a new artwork from you, as always impressive.
plas, plas, plas :applause:

03 March 2003, 08:48 PM

Great work Pascal!! I really like the design of your mermaid, the fact that she isn't the usual blonde hair human with half fish body. I like the fact that she is of her element, she has different parts of sea creatures as her features. Great idea!!

03 March 2003, 08:58 PM
beautiful work !!!

03 March 2003, 09:09 PM
Wonderful pascal, as usual!!

I love the canister thingy on her belt. Brilliant detail.

03 March 2003, 09:18 PM
Hey WB Pascal!

Reminds me of the LOTR challenge I was working on!

Great Stuff!

:applause: :applause: :applause:

03 March 2003, 09:34 PM
Love the body but I just dont like the face, but thats just me :) Good work. :bounce:

03 March 2003, 09:38 PM
Wow indeed. I didn't read all the "you rock" posts, so if its been mentioned, sorry...

The lighting leaved a bit to be desired in my opinion. I definatly feel a lack of depth in the image. I origonally thought it was 2d.

but still, I like the head very much.

03 March 2003, 09:51 PM
Excellent work, beautiful style:buttrock:

03 March 2003, 09:51 PM
I think it's great, Pascal. If I did anything else, it would be a bump map. I love bio-luminescents.:)

03 March 2003, 09:53 PM

03 March 2003, 10:08 PM
Encore un chef d'oeuvre à encadrer ;)

Fabulous work as usual :buttrock:

03 March 2003, 10:17 PM
great job pascal :D.

personally i think the tentacles should have a sharper tip.

one crit (if you don't mind) would be the tentacle on the

shoulder. It looks very unproportional, like a pile of mushed

up clay. I think when you modified the tentacle as a whole

element, you somehow got the suckers mixed up and

distorted them as well. I think the shape of the suckers

should stay consistent.

another thing would be the arm. the muscles you got there

are very strange. the muscles on the lower arm are clustered

all around the elbow. also it looks especially muscular and

"veinish" compared to the rest of the arm.

other than that, i think it's wonderful :D.

keep up the good work.

03 March 2003, 11:05 PM
Whow this tin and brass textures of the adornment look so real - perhaps also because of this good lighting.

It really has style althoug it isn`t my type of girl.

stunning gRe

03 March 2003, 11:40 PM

03 March 2003, 11:50 PM
That is one beautiful character. My favorite character from you. Very original design for a mermaid, the tenticles are great. WOW

03 March 2003, 11:51 PM
Awesome job.
Other than the minor details already metioned, I love it. The tentacles are great.:)

03 March 2003, 12:00 AM
It's good to se your work again pascal...beautiful as always

03 March 2003, 12:09 AM
Suuuper beau...

( il faudrait bien que je vienne te le dire dans ton ubi-departement! )

03 March 2003, 12:33 AM
I was scared for a minute thinking that you had left our little community for good, your work was the reason that i decided to follow my dreams of entering the 3d world, and it's great to see you post, excelent work as always. WELCOME BACK P.B!!! :applause:

03 March 2003, 12:39 AM
tres belle composition:thumbsup:

03 March 2003, 02:29 AM
I just love it. Mainly for the character design, which is pure genius! But also the attention to detail, as has been mentioned. I agree with the guy who did the overpaint, maybe a bit more contrast and color. And the upper arm is too short and the whole arm is just slightly off, but then she's not human is she? :)

By the way I love the way the tentacle bends against her shoulder.

03 March 2003, 02:32 AM

03 March 2003, 02:32 AM
Wow, great character! :applause: :bounce: :bounce:

03 March 2003, 02:47 AM
So, she married?
Thanx for the inspiration. :)
Micah H.

03 March 2003, 03:20 AM
In my complete laymans opinion, (I can't draw a stick figure with any accuracy) that is one of the finest pieces of digital artwork I have ever seen. The color, the form, and the departure from the conventional tressed hominid make for a stunning and unique work.
The nit picking part is more about the replies.. Those appendages on her head with the sucker pads are properly called arms, not tentacles. Tentacles are smooth appendages with enlarged ends called distal club that are sometimes covered in stalked, ringed sucker pads.(a la the squid) Arms on the other hand, are smooth appendages that have cupped sucker pads attached along their length.(re: octopus)
Of course this is strictly speaking with cephalopods :)

Just thought I'd share

Just so I do think I'm a total wanker with nothing to add, here is a link to some alright sucker pad pics

this is a project I have in mind for a while, to create and sell a ready-to-animate cg characters collection like the model kits you can find in stores... the thing about this project is that i want to find the good balance between quality and simplicity... the only one model I made so far (the biker in my front page) is way too much complex... i have to find the good style ... takes time ..

03 March 2003, 05:19 AM
Awesome

03 March 2003, 05:40 AM
Love the tentacle hair.

03 March 2003, 05:54 AM

perfect!! you are the best..

03 March 2003, 11:35 AM
Just like Steven S said, I definitely agree with the guy that did the overpaint but even so this is still top class as it is. Awesome work with the character design. Where did you draw inspiration for this character? Well done and welcome back, hope to see more of you. :)

You have received the CGtalk choice award .Please feel free to display this image anywhere you like! Very inspirational work.

upon receiving this award, it guarantees you a spot in the cgtalk gallery hall of fame ( - which you are now placed

P.S. Please email me @ for the award .psd file

03 March 2003, 11:37 AM
wow
great pic...

congrats on the award ;)!

03 March 2003, 11:43 AM
Superb work Pascal...

But I'd like to critisize a little  ok? Well It's not as much as critique as a question...

Her hands.. All over her body the shadows have nice contrast and all, but eher hands compared to the rest of the body are (to me) a little to blury. I meen shadow somehow lost their contrast on her hands. I anderstand that there is a strong scourse of light above the hands, but in that case I think the darkest place on the hands should have more contrast... Or is it SSS out there?

Well I hope I wrote everything at least a little bit anderstandible

But in overall the character is great

P.s. sorry for my english...

03 March 2003, 11:47 AM
BTW when you have the final pic, just email it to me and I'll update the entry :)

03 March 2003, 11:56 AM

03 March 2003, 06:48 PM
hey mister!when i grow up,i wanna be just like u!!
amazing work..i specially like the outfit

03 March 2003, 07:24 PM
Beautiful work Pascal:D

subtle, and magical. I love the porportions, her lines are clean and the result is a very hot, very different mermaid. I need to start texturing more.

I agree that the fingers are round in a way that stands out, i get the feeling they would be a bit more elegant, and the distortion of the suckers on the tenticle is distracting.

Beautiful peice of art.

03 March 2003, 09:49 PM
i'm in love... where can i meet this princess??

post a wireframe pls and a nude version heh :bounce:

03 March 2003, 01:04 AM

once again absolutely awesome...
i love your work...
cu leif

03 March 2003, 02:06 AM
I've been checking your stuff out for a while now, you have good vision. Your are a true artist and not just someone who knows 3D. What inspires you, and what are you thinking when you come up with these concepts. Please let me know.:buttrock:

03 March 2003, 04:33 AM
Wow! it's very beautiful.

03 March 2003, 04:43 AM
That is just more beautiful that i can say dude.

03 March 2003, 07:33 AM

03 March 2003, 10:02 AM
Simply Great!!! as aways Mr blanché

03 March 2003, 11:07 AM

Hope you will discuss your method, bump texture are great, nice background

03 March 2003, 12:07 PM
for someone like u....exceptional talent is an understatement......amazing work!!.

03 March 2003, 08:07 PM
Yeah! Nude version of this beauty should be absolutely Ultra-Cool! :buttrock: ;)

Splendid creation, Pascal

A superb and rich hair

ok, only because you asked for it loocas ;) originaly, she was supposed to be topless, but the guys at high end magazine asked to me to add some geometry to cover some compromising details ;)

i'll have the poster available on soon ... wich version do you guys want? ;)

03 March 2003, 08:56 PM
some details:

Daolohua CnC
03 March 2003, 09:28 PM
either is good... its completely up to you

03 March 2003, 09:39 PM
Oh man! Topless is absolute winner to me! Well, don't wan't to be mentioned as a perverse! I think that she lives in ocean, right? Well, haven't ever seen dressed fish! ;) So I think that the beuty of this art is in her nudity! She has very nice body, breasts included ;) , so it'd be a pitty to dress her up... Only my opinion...

Anyways, both pics are absolutely superb/awesome! :applause:

03 March 2003, 09:45 PM
One more: The guys at High End magazine don't know what that is the BEAUTY of the art! I think that they should think of this as an amazing piece of art, not as some kind of pornography... ;) Well, no hard feelings guys from High End... :)

 OH MY GOODNESS... this is sooooo awesome..... titties

03 March 2003, 09:01 PM

I don’t know what to think about topless version :\...

I’m not a big fan of Node-CG, but she looks much more natural in this version.

In my opinion only her hands and this... Fluorescence fish needs work. Everything else looks just lovely! And... Maybe different camera, you see, her face needs a bit close up, in this point of view we don’t see, how good it is.

03 March 2003, 09:45 PM
 beautiful ...with / without dress...

.......................Autnt elegant et " Stylistique" Que possible

Breathtaking, surreal, elegant, are my intial thoughts. Beautiful is my final thought.

I have this funny feeling Pascal that the version without (Geometry) will be much more welcome........just a quess mind you.;) :p

So how about a tip on the up-coming Prince of Persia, the last I heard from an old friend was they were really busy with something speacial in concept form back in Summer 2001.But that it was really going to be a game that will do justice to the POP legacy.

And.......................Project BG&E........It looked Fantastic last time I had seen it,graphics wise as well as Gameplay wise. To me the surprise hit of 2002 E3.

Ok,OK, I know,In time it will all be revealed. In either case your beautiful Mermaid is as beautiful a lady as there is.

03 March 2003, 01:46 AM
Very nice work my friend, I like it alot. By the way, just wondering if you ever seen this anime film " Blue Submarine 6"? Because I think you might like it, if you haven't seen it do check it out!:applause:

03 March 2003, 02:58 AM
The more I look at it and the more I find the level of detail in the tentacles distracting. You have some great details in the face and the jewelry, but the tentacle suckers really strike out as 4-sided extrusions with meshsmooth. And this is even more obvious in the close ups. If you could add some details there to match what you have in the earrings and face, that would be totally perfect.

But I'm really amazed at how you managed to make a creature with so few human features so femininely beautiful. Just awesome.

03 March 2003, 01:38 AM
You have some VERY nice work. VERY imaginative.

03 March 2003, 05:07 AM
Wow, your mermaid is mezmorizing! I love how you swurved away from the default idealization of mermaids, and created one hell of a original one. Excellent modeling, texturing, and design. Your other work on your website is also very impressive. Great job!

Very cool! The render is awesome, the detail is great, and this design is very original and cool, awesome job... the only thing I would work on is the hands, they could use a bit more detail (but hands are a pain to make detail for, aren't they?).

08 August 2004, 07:27 AM
i'm your fan m8. you are the one...

08 August 2004, 02:16 AM
breath-taking design here, unreal work! :D

09 September 2004, 03:44 PM
this peice is really cool. I love the different take on a mermaid you have here. The way the head is done is what amazes me with the octopus tentacles for hair.

The only problem I have with it, is for a mermaid, the rest of her body is too human looking. In form. textures say otherwise (great texture work by the way), but the rest of the body says human woman to me and not mermaid. Not that I have to see a fish tail or anything like that. But something that points more to mermaid.

Otherwise superb.

didnt want to let the thread die... its brilliant work

ahaha thx tilite!
actually there is slight chances that you may have some news from the mermaid again..
something worth the wait trust me ;)

03 March 2005, 04:09 PM
well...i've got to say...i'm one of those cgtalkers who 'cos of tilite was able to lay eyes on such exceptionally beautiful piece of work.

the first thing i noticed was the mermaids nose and mouth - almost fish most of the mermaids i've seen are beautiful human girls half way from was very thoughtful of you to make her quite believable - she actually looks like she belongs to the oceans.

the next thing was the almost hideous sea-monster/creature-like details where her hair should've been - its fantastic how it just makes her perfect...and thts the beauty of it!

and ofcourse totally love the jewelry details...

dunno if all of this has been mentioned earlier...

11 November 2005, 07:15 PM

11 November 2005, 10:50 AM
Who would dare not to check it every day ? Your artworks are the most inspiring I have ever seen, showing such a great painterly feeling...Hell, if I had problems with dreaming in 3D, I'd surely dream about your images *laughs*
And I've added all the contents of your inspiration site to my favourites. Guess that tells what I think about it.
Hope to see more artwork from you soon, and daringly wishing to see some insight into your work-process. *bows to the master*
