Awesome. I saw this on the blog. :D I really enjoyed it, very entertaining. The story felt pretty improvised, which gave a very refreshing feeling of spontaneity. Ha, I love it when the pilot said "I really want to..." :D
03 March 2007, 03:45 AM
ya it was fun to see it in progress, and finally completed! it's an interesting, mature story ...
03 March 2007, 10:57 PM
Wow! Now that deserves front page! I have envied/followed the work of the Pixar classes for a while now, and this is just yet another example of the excellent animation coming out of there! great job to all of you!
03 March 2007, 04:30 AM
Thank you for comment everyone:)
I just added more pictures
03 March 2007, 05:23 AM
Very awesome. Great job. I had seen bits of that on people's demo reel. It's nice to see the whole thing.
.... now then, tell me more about this sex room? :D
03 March 2007, 06:29 AM
wow that was very well done, i actually laughed a few times too, which is a pretty hard feat, 5 stars for sure
03 March 2007, 07:17 AM
hehe, love it. though I have to say I wasnt too keen on the "fly by" at the begining. great character animation though.....interesting story..hehe
03 March 2007, 09:52 AM
lol, what the hell was that? :p
This isn't really suited for kids lol...
Um... the animation is top notch... true pixar style... I thought sound was a little bit annoying... this atmo-sphearish noise, made me go bananas... :scream:
anyway, very nice work!
03 March 2007, 11:00 PM
Thatīs what i call a good group stundent work, itīs very nice,,,,i loved the last sip on the martini,,,class..
03 March 2007, 01:55 AM
Ha! Radical. Great tweak on the form of the animated short. So un-animation-ey! Reminds me of Tripping the Rift. Better dialogue though, e.g. "Point 21!" such a great reading.
Will we be seeing more works from Pixar classes here? Goodness, I hope so. How many classes have there been?
Animation was top notch of course, except notably the captain's walk in... I know it was supposed to be bored and stiff, but it also looked weightless and characterless.
03 March 2007, 02:36 AM
Hahaha. Oh man. That's awesome. Great animation, voice acting, and a really fun little short. The ending was perfect. And yeah, the acting via the voice and animation = spot on.
I highly dug it.
03 March 2007, 08:11 AM
No final credits? it ends quite abruptly... I ask myself if it finishes just like that or is it supposed to be continued?
I see there is lot of people who work on that, how many times did it take to achieve it?
by the way congrats for the animation.

Thank you for viewing everyone :)
This projest took us around 18 weeks. Week 1 to week 5 we did character design and modeling. Week 6 - Week 15. We worked on animation. For rendering and lighting took us around 3 weeks I think
Yes actually story is not end yet. The class working on another episode now :)

05 May 2007, 03:13 PM
Could you tell us a bit more about this project?
05 May 2007, 04:27 PM
Great character animation. Fun acting.
Maybe I'm a little slow, but I didn't get the end. I thought there were no openings.
05 May 2007, 04:32 PM
Of all the awesome animation appeared in this, how can you guys let the leg poppings happen when the captain first entered the room and also before he sat down? :p
My favourite parts: when Tony said "Thank you so- thank you so much sir,..." nice continuous mix of emotions! And also when the captain is trying to stop Tony, wow, nice camera movements, nice expressions on Captain's face, ... loved it. And noticed the captain enjoyed the wine just before his death.... very good idea... but I thought maybe when he was dying, he would struggle a little to swallow that down? ie, tilt head inward a little?
Anyway, awesome job guys! Been waiting for this for a while :applause:
05 May 2007, 04:41 PM
genuinely made me laugh :applause:
05 May 2007, 06:27 PM
Hey guys! Congrats to Cover!
This looks amazing! Great animations! I hope you guys all find jobs in the industry. Pixar 3 means you're probably damn good at animating. Haha... If the companies you go to need any modelers you know.... hook it up baby.
05 May 2007, 06:37 PM
Amazing acting and animation. I didn't understand what you meant be Pixar class 3?
Again.. top notch and congrats on your awards everyone!
05 May 2007, 07:51 PM
Hi, my name's Aaron, and I was one of the animators on this short. I just wanted to give a little more info on the thing and clear up some questions.
The slightly off cadence and decidedly less than watertight plot points can all be attributed to the fact that the dialogue was performed entirely improvisationally. Before our semester started, our teachers/directors Andrew Gordon and Scott Clark spent a day recording 3 improv actors playing off each other. Then they edited the dialogue into a short for us to animate to. Scott I believed coined the term "improvimation".
I think we spent about 5 weeks on character and set design/construction, and about 9 on animation (is that right?). Each animator had 3-4 shots in a sequence and was responsible for all animation in those shots.
Thanks for looking!

Well done in the aspect of the cartoon approach and the characters' emotions.
The script... needs serious improvement.
05 May 2007, 09:12 PM
strongest animation is of the captain shifting his weight on the chair, great poses and timing, very believable weight. good job
05 May 2007, 10:22 PM
Possibly the best student animation and story I've ever seen. And that's saying something. :)
05 May 2007, 10:25 PM
Ha HAH! Wow, that was terrific. I read so much into the characters right away just from the nuances in the acting. The captain comes across as this bored but tolerant patriarch playboy passively indulging the eager beaver pilot with his responses. I loved that opening exchange of mundane stats. Awesome delivery. Plus, of course, the final sip gag at the end. Tight.
05 May 2007, 11:22 PM
Really great. I LOLed. :D
One thing though... There seems to be something very wrong with the motion of the stars in the very first shot of the bridge. I found that a little distracting.
05 May 2007, 02:28 AM
Beautiful animation. For some reason my favorite part is when the kid is calling out the coordinates in the beginning. Very nice subtlety on the face and eyes....can really tell he is alive and thinking and it reveals a lot of personality.
05 May 2007, 02:31 AM
Great job, guys. I've only been getting little peaks of the pixar class work in the labs, but some of the animation coming out of there is pretty amazing.
05 May 2007, 07:38 AM
the animation when the kid thanks the captain, and gets all excited is AMAZING!
great, great work!
keep it up guys!
05 May 2007, 08:05 AM
yoohoo cool, 5 twinklies.
05 May 2007, 09:08 AM
wonderfully animated, well written and the voice acting is great! and despite what others may say, i love the abrupt ending. fits perfectly with the final joke.
hahaahahahaha, this short is excellent! the poses are great, the acting is sweeeeeeet, the idea is awesome. the lipsych is not that great though, there are some nice cartoony mouth shapes at work... but the main beats here and there are not quite right, and especially the mouth closing poses (Ms and Ps) are not closing the mouth properly. like on "speed 17", "on my mark we'll reset", when the babe talks, then... when the captain sais "same amount of time", that close up shot is a little disturbing (I think mostly due to not having proper M shapes, or not being able to show a little tension in the lips on that closing), same main beats problems in "the captain will be indisposed for the remainder of the", and the "I'll be" from the last line doesn't read so well, the B, starting right on the first 2 frames of the shot, and lasting only those 2 frames.
anyway, it's funny as hell all throughout. I only don't get the ending, it's a little unclear. how can he be in the sex room when there are no openings? who has access to this room? the entire ship? I don't think so, it should be way more, like maybe all the ships in the galaxy... since the captain couldn't have access to it for months... I think they were pretty poorly organized with this sex room anyway :D at first I even asked myself - why can't they both go?? like... especially the captain, why is he not able to go there anytime, right? why is this even an issue, doesn't make sense. and I hoped the story will explain it by the end, but it doesn't.
so, my 2 cents - story and lipsynch. 1 cent each.
great job though, the acting was excellent.
05 May 2007, 02:32 PM
5 stars from me.
05 May 2007, 02:47 PM
Well done, I think it looked great. The animation is excellent and the story is fun. Something to be proud of, great job to all that worked on this. Everything salutes you.
05 May 2007, 04:20 PM
I like it how they pull no punches calling it what it is: The Sex Room. Nothing "politically correct" in space, like Pleasure Quarters, or Bio-Needs Corridor in space eh? Hmm. Those sound even MORE dirty now that I think of it. Haha
Good job you all, it looked good. Congrats on the win
05 May 2007, 04:34 PM
nice man realy niceeeeeeee
05 May 2007, 04:56 PM

The Virgin Voyage is short film in the 3rd level Pixar class at AAU. Teach by Scott Clark and Andrew Godon.
For more information
Andrew wrote in splinedoctors.blogspot.com
" Scott Clark and I recorded 4 improv actors doing random scenes. We then picked the best one out of 20 or so skits and are animating to it. The students are in charge of every aspect of the process. We started by doing visual development. Then tasks were assigned to each student. Some Model, Some are doing layout etc... We have cast out the scenes and the students are beginning animation. Each of them will have a chunk of very juicy shots to animate. The dialogue they are animating to is full of great stuff. It give them the opportunity to animate something original with interesting characters. Granted, the story is improvised, so it aint Bambi but its good and alot can be learned. Scott Clark coined the term "Improvimation" I think its a great way to generate content, especially on the student level. Alot of the time, students take dialogue clips from movies. Unless they are done really well, most of them are lack luster. Expect to see the final film at the end of the semester. "
Some model, color design, early character design

I really enjoyed it.

Awesome animation and design work, and I think the length is great for the time constraints of the project. Alot of the acting and weights shifts i loved. seems like a fun class =D
