I'm currently making a new piece for my reel. The concept behind it is a geisha girl with dreadlocks. How would I go about creating the dreadlocks? Should I just use the hair options in either Max or Maya? Or, should I go the polygon route? Thanks guys!

Depends on how big you want them. If they are really thick dreadlocks, modeling them with polys would be fine. You could also make very thick individual hairs to simulate dreads with max or maya hair. Dreads don't really hang or move like regular hair, they are basically somewhat stiff ropes attached to someone's head, so keep that in mind.
