View Full Version : HMC 8: Holly Golightly | Audrey Hepburn - Breakfast at Tiffany's [Bust]
03 March 2007, 11:17 PM
Been meaning to do one of these challenges for a while now, hopefully I'll have time to finish this... I thought I'd do Audrey Hepburn, she has a nice classic look that should be fun and challenging to model. I'll post my reference soon... Good Luck to everyone!

Had a bit of a search for some reference tonight, heres what I've got so far, it seems to match up alright, good enough for me to flesh her out, from there I'll just do it by eye.

Base mesh is done, still tonnes to do but I'm hoping I can get closer to the likeness when I start sculpting a bit. Oh yes and I forgot to change the eye shader to brown ;) Crits would be really helpful at this stage, let me know what you think!

I think the eyes are too big, maybe the painting she has on it is distracting, but i think your eyes could be a smaller.

Thanks for the comment AndreKling, still plugging away on this one trying to get the face structure right, I think she will start to look more feminine when the eyes, eyebrows/lashes, and hair are done... but its getting there. Crits or paintovers would be great :)

yo dude, iv highlighted some areas that just need a little tweaking, everything seems to be coming on great though! First off i will apologise for my useless illustrations with my mouse, but basically the areas in light orange need to be smoothed out or bulged, and the blue is for added lines and indents or some movement of geometry.
Basically if you have a look at the cheek near the mouth its a little softer the crease from the cheek round the edge of the mouth and the muscle is less pronounced closer to the chin, it sort of fades out flush. There is a little nobley bit near the corner of the mouth which needs to be softend and go the other way. Theres a ledge near the nostril which needs to be removed if possible or blended in. The other bit ringed on the nostril just needs moving up slightly, the same with the bridge of the nose and maybe made a tiney bit thinner. Because as you can see from the reference image her nose continues to thin out past the corner of her eye. Smooth out the crease between the eyelid and cheek and theres a little bump on the side of her head which is fine but it needs to connect up to the fat where the brow comes down.. its like theres a little dip but shouldnt be. Also add a little more fattyness to the cheeks just a touch where i showed on the other side of the head!
Hope this all helps, sorry making it so long winded, just wanted to explain my crumy scribbles and great work so far!

Cheers Jorel, your a legend! :scream:

Another update! Things are starting to come together now, its hard to tell without all the accessories etc.. but I feel the general shape is improving. Harsh crits would be welcome.
03 March 2007, 11:56 PM
I'll take no comments as a good sign ;)
Heres the latest update, done the eyelashes, next up are the eyebrows, all elements subject to change ;) The eyes are just a paintover.... Will work on them at some later stage :)
03 March 2007, 01:21 AM
Hey james, great start the likeness is already coming through :)
Couple of suggestions i can add, i think you could tighten the bridge of the nose abit further, from the reference pics it looks like she has it more defined. Also it might cos there is no eyebrows on her yet.. but maybe abit more definition above the eyes so that theres a bit of a transition from the forehead to the bit that comes under the eyebrow.
Top Stuff

Hi Harin, thanks for the useful crits, I think your on the money with them. The brow is a lot more complex than I thought and its something that i'm working on at the moment, after that i'll whack in some eyebrows which will hopefully make it look a bit more Audrey like. from there I'll have to get started on either the eyes, or the hair .
03 March 2007, 02:46 PM
Small update, let me know what you think :)
03 March 2007, 09:39 PM
Another update, feedback is welcome :)
03 March 2007, 10:10 PM
looking good ma boy! :D
03 March 2007, 10:31 PM
Hey James coming along good! Couple of things you could work on are, the transition from the nostrils to the skin below it, maybe make the folds of skin above the eyes a little thinner? Also it looks as though the top of the head needs to be brought up higher so that the eyes appear more central in the head. They are the main things i can think of at the mo! But keep the updates coming!
04 April 2007, 07:41 AM
Hi, i like how she's coming along. My crit would be that the eyes are a bit too big. It might be hard to judge from reference you have, where she has make-up and it seems to make them larger than they are. If i remember right, then there should be almost an eye sized space from the side of the head to the eyes. Anyways, hope this helps
04 April 2007, 09:50 AM
Thanks for the comments, I'll try to put a few of your crits into action when I get a chance :)
04 April 2007, 10:56 PM
Took a bit of a break from modelling and tried to have a go at the lighting. All I want is something simple that shows off the model well... All rendered in Maya Software renderer. Next up the eye shader, then the dreaded hair.
04 April 2007, 11:01 PM
looking good james
04 April 2007, 10:15 PM
Worked on the eye shader today, I think its given it a bit more character. Crits as always are welcome, next up will be the hair or I might work on a decent shader and light setup to show off the model. I don't plan on doing a texture so basically I'm just putting off attempting the hair ;) After the hair I'll go over the face again.
EDIT: Oh and also if anyone is looking for a good eyeshader tutorial look here (http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/tutorials.html)! Its for Maya but I'm sure if you know your package to a moderate level its transferable.
04 April 2007, 12:43 AM
Hey man, looking much better! Toning down her cheeks really helped. Keep it up!
04 April 2007, 09:27 AM
aye dude this is coming on extremley well! The eyes are gooood :D
04 April 2007, 10:46 AM
This is nice, i like her nose and mouth :)
04 April 2007, 06:02 PM
Thanks guys :) I'll continue to work on it!
04 April 2007, 06:40 PM
Done some more work in my spare time, things are coming along nicely, progressing at least. Keep changing my mind on how to preent the final model, I'm thinking I'm going to do textures now and make it as realistic as possible. Still deciding on a hair soloution, that will probably come last. C&C's welcome
04 April 2007, 09:27 AM
Coming along good dude:)
Some of the tweaks you could do (Some i mentioned to you yesterday)
the shape of the top eye lid
add the scoop above the lips (forgotten what its called again...)
I think you could shorten the top eye lashes bit in the outer edge of the eye area.
I think the model is getting there not many tweaks left! Nice work.
04 April 2007, 02:59 PM
Thanks again Harin  I'll work on those tweaks when I revisit the head modeling again.
Updated the picture in my last post with a few tweaks. C&C's or paintovers welcome.
04 April 2007, 10:28 PM
Keep it up.
04 April 2007, 12:07 AM
Looking really good! I like it. http://forums.cgsociety.org/images/icons/icon13.gif

Thanks guys! Here is the new update:
Things to do:
-Colour, Bump and Spec maps
Crits welcome :)
04 April 2007, 11:25 PM
I've blocked in some textures now, they aren't final but will do for now. Next job is to go over the model again and try and get a better likeness and do some higher level details.
04 April 2007, 08:40 AM
looking very very nice dude, i think the lips should be slightly darker, but the skin is very nice
04 April 2007, 11:19 PM
Found this site today, has about over 200 images of Audrey, I was stuggling to find decent pictures of her at the age she was during 'Tiffany's', theres a lot to sift through but some of them are perfect :)

Done a bit more work on the model today, the skin texture needs fixing so the quality isn't fantastic, its coming along well though. As always though feel free to drop by and leave a comment about the overall look http://www.audrey1.com/forum/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif
EDIT: Oh yes and for some more images of Audrey Hepburn go here (http://www.doctormacro.com/Movie%20Star%20Pages/Hepburn,%20Audrey-Annex.htm). They are fantastic and very high resoloution.
04 April 2007, 04:17 AM
Hey man! After looking at Audry for too many hours I have a couple of suggestions (don't know if they're good but it's woth a try :) )...
The eyes seems a bit too far appart
Her ear is bigger and a bit further up
Her skull is higher (the eyes should be in the center of the head..now they look too far up)
Her eyes needs a bit more shape at the outer sides
edit: deleted img

Thanks for the crits mate! Although the picture was a bit dodgy ;) the critique was a good one, I've put a few of your suggestions into effect and here is the latest update.
I've stepped back a few steps to get the modeling down better, the texture has been scrapped and I'm planning on redoing the eyebrows and eyelashes. Updates soon :) C&C's welcome!
04 April 2007, 08:44 AM
I liked the render before a lot more because she looks now like an old woman for me :)
04 April 2007, 09:19 AM
I like the smile :) One technique i have found useful for getting the overall shape of the face is by creating a few different perspective cameras within mudbox, then apply various different reference images to them. Mess around with the position, rotation and FOV of the camera until u get a good overall fit with the reference image and ur model. After that its just a case of sliding the transparency of the mesh layer side to side to see where the major mismatches are. Gets you up to a certain point then the rest can be done by eye.
04 April 2007, 09:41 AM
Better proportions in the udate! Her lips looks really good man. I think this is closer and will look good when you get some Golightly eyelashes. Maybe even out the jaw-area a bit ( a bit too masculine?)
Oh and, yeah, the image was dodgy..just for explaning but as you can see I removed it :)
04 April 2007, 12:57 PM
Star_Scream82: Yes, she looks a bit scary with no eye lashes :) Hopefully I'll sort out the upper falf of the head and it will look better.
H2: Cheers Harin, I'll give it a go mate.
PolarBird: Thanks man, I'll have a look at the jaw :) Update the eylashes now, she looks a bit more feminine.
04 April 2007, 12:17 PM
I don't think I'll get this all finished in time but here is the latest update :) If I don't get it done, I'll carry on with this after the challenge ends.
04 April 2007, 12:41 PM
Nice :) its coming along great, the eyes are looking good. Couple of things i just spotted, there seems to be a slight indent in the bit in between her nostrils and also i think the eye lashes can do with a few more strands near the corner of the eyes where theres a bit of a gap.
Keep the updates coming!
