View Full Version : Creating the thumb

I've been looking for a tutorial on how to model a hand correctly. I've seen a bunch of tutorials which show that you should extrude a thumb from the side of a hand. This doesn't look natural because when the hand is at rest, the thumb lies below the rest of the hand. From my experience the thumb doesn't animate correctly using this approach either. Can someone who's experienced in modeling characters give me some tips or refer me to a tutorial which illustrates the correct approach to modeling the thumb?

I agree with you about the thumb construction. Here is my quick study to date. Four fingers get extruded from one end of flattened cube. Than the thumb gets extruded form under side of that cube. Now, relocate the thumb so that it is not located directly under the palm. This seems to work ok.
