Hey guys, i want to know what machines you guys use for edit in maya, and what is the best video card for editing... :cool:

not rendering, but editing polygons, Nurbs, subdiv, animation and all stuff!

You have a choice between Nvidia and ATI. if you can afford the high end proffesional cards get a Quadro or a Fire. if you cant, you can mod the normal gaming cards into their proffesional equivelents. These mods do not offer the full proffesional feature set but they help.
They say that the Geforce cards are better for polygonal work, while ATi performs better with textures, i am not sure how this has changed with the latest releases. A third option are the Wildcat VPs but no one really seems to care about those.

People complain about the stability of ATI drivers. do a search on this forum and the Maya forum for 9700/XL1 and Maya, and see what they have to say. Nvidia is supposed to be quite stable, though the FX bombed so you are kind of stuck with the current model.

Thx dude, i have an Athlon XP1600+ GeForce 4 TI 4400 and 256 ddr 266mhz, did you think that this is good for modelling? if not what can I add!?

that is just fine. most people don't even have something like that.

you would do well to get some more ram, though.

i run a system with 2x Pentium III 1GHz, 1GB sdram, ATI Radeon 8500 128mb.

Your video card is definitely not what is holding up your system. Mines fairly similar and i dont have much trouble until things get really high rez or the history builds up.
Its recommended to have at least 512mb, but 1gig is def. nicer.
Your processor is slow. Upgrading this should cost a lot less than upgrading the video card.
