Here my my first wip of a sharkman.

03-06-2007, 06:45 AM
Just the torso so far, i'll post the rest of it later. Comments would be appreciated!!

03-06-2007, 06:48 AM
Here's a monster like character I'm working on...

03-06-2007, 07:09 AM
Hello Muddlers!!!
hehe, at last we've got out own place :)
here's my cutie, rendered with some great materials from Mahlikus The Black (cheers man!)

03-06-2007, 07:53 AM
Here's a little something from the RPG Earthdawn I made in Mudbox a while ago. It's "forever WIP" as it was more of an experiment than anything else. Looked interesting enough for me. Rendered in 3dsmax with Vray.
All the worms were sculpted one by one in Mudbox over a fairly simple skullish head. After that I just exported a displacement map and had some fun in max :)

03-06-2007, 08:24 AM
Hey guys,Looking great.

Keep the work coming, I want to see more! :)

03-06-2007, 08:34 AM
Killer brush work their Fausto, I can't wait to see what you are going to cook up for the rest of him. :)

03-06-2007, 09:09 AM
While all the WIP-ing took place at SkyMatter's forums, I'd at least like to share this link to my latest Mud sculpt ->

03-06-2007, 09:12 AM
The sharkman is great Garrick ! A promise of a cool character !

Here is mine, done with the evaluation of Mudbox, my first test in this cool soft:

03-06-2007, 08:11 PM
Should be a sticky :)

03-06-2007, 08:20 PM
Here's my WIP, put about 10-12 hours into it so far.

03-07-2007, 01:14 AM
Wherever there is a man in pain, jack bauer is around. I assume he's offscreen?

Awesome work everyone!

Fausto, those abs are brilliant! Are you working from any ref or is that all just your beautiful imagination?

03-07-2007, 01:46 AM
My attempt at a head thats not a generic bald guy.

03-07-2007, 03:25 AM
Come to think of it, I'd like to put Jack Bauer in that chair for all of these seasons of repeated subject matter :D

03-07-2007, 12:36 PM
It's me.. not a real wip but.. kinda.
I love mudbox material, i'll love to see realtime shadow and sss maybe.

huahuahuaa.. Scary isn't it?

03-07-2007, 06:13 PM
Neato! Kinda looks like one of those death masks they used to make (that aint' morbid :) )

Also, the inner corner of the eye is significantly higher than the outer, do you eyes angle that much?

03-07-2007, 07:08 PM
Here is one of my first sculpts with the trial. I spent less than an hour. Please ignore the ear this is a WIP after all. I imported a low res head made in a another app instead of using a primitive to start with. I had fun modeling with just a cube too though. This is probably the easiest most intuitive 3D app ever. FUN!

03-07-2007, 07:17 PM
thanks to all for your comments.....and to answer your question ezra at first i had the idea of what i wanted the abs to look like and began to work on them. i later found something pretty similar done by kolby jukes and looked at that as reference. he truly has some amazing work........

03-07-2007, 07:21 PM
nice work there majorbludd i like how its coming along

03-07-2007, 07:59 PM
Here is my WIP. Unfortunately, my MB demo expires today, so I don't know when/if I'll get a chance to work on this much more....

03-07-2007, 08:02 PM
Here is my WIP. Unfortunately, my MB demo expires today, so it might be a while before I can get back around to this....

03-07-2007, 09:14 PM
and here is my WIP model, after 4 hours, starting from the default basic woman face in XSI. There are still a lot to do, details to add and to refine.

03-08-2007, 04:00 PM
This is my first attempt in MBox
Rendered in Maya-Mray
C&C Welcome

03-09-2007, 01:03 AM
Good stuff guys! Here's my lastest WIP, based on the Russian/Slovakian (?) folklore character Baba Yaga.

Base mesh modelled in Silo to a reasonable poly count (~2700 quads) then exported to mudbox for playtime! :applause:

I couldn't resist throwing it into XSI as well :D

03-09-2007, 01:34 AM

That is the freakiest looking head I think I've ever seen. Keep up the good work.

03-09-2007, 11:36 AM
Hello all. Here's a few shots of a character that i'm sculpting to get me used to Mudbox's toolset [ I have been a user of ZBrush for awhile and am trying to get up to speed in Skymatters excellent package].

I chose to sculpt an older person for this test to explore wrinkles and ageing of the skin techniques.. Here's the earlier Level 3 sub D work..

And then some initial fine details - I kind of rushed into this phase as I was so keen to work at such high levels! I feel the sculpt needs more 'mid range' work but I thought i'd let you peeps give me your opinions.

Thanks for looking!

03-09-2007, 04:57 PM
@acidream: thanks mate, gald you like it :)

and here is an update:

03-09-2007, 07:28 PM
Just a quick shark for fun

03-09-2007, 08:02 PM
haha, love the shark Goon , maybe more details?

03-09-2007, 08:29 PM
Ha ha awesome shark.
might post a boring wip of my first test sculp (wood ish polearm, should look abit like a creature).

Edit: here it is :/

03-12-2007, 05:40 PM
first official mudbox wip. this is a propotype character for the dominance war II comp.

03-12-2007, 06:30 PM
I like the style of this character.

Can I see a close up of his face.

03-13-2007, 12:49 AM
good day muddlers.i m liking mudbox a lot. i found a sculpture of a ratman and tried to recreate in mudbox.

03-13-2007, 12:50 AM
Here's one of my WIP head... still lots of tweaking and details to come:

The material and lighting are temporary as I'll try to make it look real with skin shading, hair, etc.

03-13-2007, 01:27 AM
Ola people!
:buttrock:Many thumbs up for sharkman, JacquesD's head and mashru's warrior (veery cool design indeed!, that flat brush makes a great effect, doesn't it?)
Well, here's my face, attempting a realistic look, but now the polycount got huge and I can't barely handle it!
Some displacement issues in the first pic, and about the second one....just how easy is to make facial exxpression in different layers and mix them :P

03-13-2007, 02:22 AM
that is one wicked model.very inspirational

03-13-2007, 07:14 AM
Oh! fantastic works in progress guys! keep the good stuff coming :)

03-13-2007, 09:53 AM
Here's a project I've been working on the past couple evenings. Still contantly tweaking it...

03-13-2007, 12:03 PM
great work people.

and thanks Garrick, nice sculptures you got. i see your location says NYC. is your studio in NYC?

ps. i will post the head soon, i am retopogising some of the mesh now.

btw, Jacques, your renders always amaze me. great work on modeling as usual.

03-13-2007, 09:01 PM
so much good work here!!!

ok, here is the hell demon finished (or abandoned :D)

and here is a new character

anyway i want to do as many characters as i can in mudbox so that i get more comfortable with this great software

03-14-2007, 07:12 PM
moving on
(the typical bad guy from the slasher movies :) )
still wip

03-14-2007, 07:51 PM
this is my second model with Mudbox3D- the first was, of course, a sphere that i tried every tool in the program on in order to get the feel of how it works. the official critique i got from that first model was: "ehwww... that's pretty gross!"

here's what i did one day on my lunch break. once again, just learning the tool, using a convenient model- namely my left hand...

I'm completely in love with this tool. took a box from 3DS and inside of an hour had something pretty decent.

Excellent work from the rest of you guys! very inspiring.

03-14-2007, 10:56 PM
Hi guys, there is some amazing work in this thread!
I'm new to sculpting and this is my first try on mudbox - i love it!

03-14-2007, 11:03 PM
pd, that's so cool

03-14-2007, 11:06 PM
Thanks Adrian! You've done an amazing job on those heads! Really creepy.

03-15-2007, 09:42 PM

I`m impressed. Especially the Knight/Warrior Guy with
the weird pattern armor. You used the "pinch" tool for that ?

Heres my Doodle. 2,5 hours in mudbox, no basemesh.

03-16-2007, 05:56 AM
wow pd, thats a really nice concept you got going on there. Keep at it.

03-16-2007, 10:46 AM
here is a model im working on (actually im just trying to learn mudbox) i think the software is awsome but im so bad with it :/.

03-17-2007, 01:46 AM
A little update:

03-17-2007, 08:49 AM
really nice :D hey im wondering if u guys are useing a wacom or something or are u sculpting with a mouse ?

03-17-2007, 10:49 AM
Wacom all the way. I'm even doing the modelling in Modo/Max with my intous nowadays.

03-17-2007, 10:53 AM
im thinking of buying a intous3 a5 do u thing that a5 is large enough?

03-17-2007, 12:02 PM
A5 is plenty big enough for most people (even too big for some). I prefer using a mouse for regular modelling and tablet for Mudbox. A regular mouse works surprisingly well for Mudbox too due to the nice Brush size/intensity controls. It's all about what you're used to really...
Word of warning about Intuos though: make sure you have enough space for the tablet, even the A5 version is bigger than an A4 paper sheet.

03-17-2007, 01:02 PM
here is a model im working on (actually im just trying to learn mudbox) i think the software is awsome but im so bad with it :/.

I think the anatomy of the rhino is a bit odd. The legs and the body itself do
not quite look natural enough.

heres a good reference pic:

03-17-2007, 01:08 PM
An update on the creature head Im doing at the moment:
I concentrated on the "nose area" quite a bit, to make the nasal
cavity more organic. Im not satisfied with the lips though, I made
the sharp edges with the pinch-tool, but this approach leads to
errors, such as overlapping. Im not sure how to correct this.

03-17-2007, 01:26 PM
yeah i know that the creature isnt good antomy :P

03-17-2007, 07:03 PM
yeah i know that the creature isnt good antomy :P

:D heh heh..

03-17-2007, 07:15 PM
btw it isnt a rhino at all. i made a rhino before and then i made a body and i was kinda lazy so i took the head of the rhino and put it on the new body :P. here is the original rhino but i havent sculpted anything on yet.

03-18-2007, 08:50 PM
Here is my exercise in mudbox:

03-18-2007, 09:14 PM
Wow, some seriously detailed work.
Did you work from reference ? Could you post in some short steps your workflow ?

03-18-2007, 10:57 PM
Superb work Andreja!

Some random doodling trying to come up with a fishy alien:

03-19-2007, 07:26 AM
Eh.. I finished mine, so I guess I'm out of this thread!

WIP is way back on page 1!

03-19-2007, 03:20 PM
Just playing with Mudbox for the first time this weekend.

Modeled in Maya to about 8400 triangles, detailed in Mudbox to 540,000 triangles.

03-20-2007, 03:41 AM
Thats a pretty good rendition of al pachino there jaques...

What Imdoing for the dominance war2
Once Im done, Ill probably make a full alien figure with her.

03-20-2007, 09:26 PM
Well good people of 3D land, it would appear that mudbox is becoming a great piece of software. ANd it also appears that alot of you are creating fantastic models. So I thought I would just post something im sculpting at the moment. Still along way to go but still here goes. Im sorry if any of you have already seen it over in the 3d still section.......

03-21-2007, 01:18 AM
marcnail: No, I didn't use any reference. It's onle my knowledge of human anatomy.
I used simple model from another guy (arshlevon). He posted model on thay have fantastic communiti and you can find everthing what you need for mudbox and cg sculpting.

Here is another wip:

03-21-2007, 06:13 AM

And i stard working on a new one... this was the first day

03-23-2007, 03:07 PM
Good stuff going on here. Here's a practice run of head model that I plan modeling the entire character.

03-23-2007, 11:06 PM
Hi everybody,

Great forum and awesome quality of artwork, been working on a character in my precious spare time, it's supposed to be Jason Statham, from the movies by director Guy Ritchie, Snatch, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, as well as The Transporter, as you can see it's still a w.i.p, planning on doing the whole body with a suit and tie, as well as some desert eagle guns, other then that, please feel free to comment & critique, Take care..!

03-25-2007, 01:51 AM
Setting this up for a render soon.
Done in Maya and MudBox. Great pieces posted here.
Thanks for looking.

03-25-2007, 03:05 AM
Odhinn: that's looking amazing! There's been a huge improvement since the beginning and its looking great. I love the wings.

03-25-2007, 03:09 AM
Thank you bro, I really appreciate you saying that about the wings. These are just low polys of the figures so the final render will have more detail.
I should have a render done by tom. Thanks again

03-25-2007, 07:30 AM
Great update Odhinn! I really like the wings too, will you post some other angles too? amazing work with just a mouse

03-25-2007, 11:28 AM
@andreja (

I guess, its time to join the forum then. Seems to me more than useful
for really learning the art of "muddling".

03-25-2007, 12:46 PM
Thanks for those kind words my friend.
Here are the figures at a higher rez. Working on the render as I post this.
Going to try it in stone first with steel wings.
I will post different render views when done. Thanks bro

03-26-2007, 08:33 PM
Here is a test render as promised.
Still working on some things, don't be too hard on me.

03-26-2007, 08:36 PM
Odhinn ( Nice sense of movement on that scene. Is the aspect ratio off in the render on that last one?

03-26-2007, 08:40 PM
Yah...thanks Wayne.
Lots of problems still I'm afraid. Working on it.

Thanks very much for that Wayne...
Had ratio locked on "Pixel" instead of Device Aspect Ratio.
Elongated the image. Owe you a pint for that one.

03-27-2007, 06:11 AM
Very nice! those metal wings are awesome. Where are the rest of the guys?

03-27-2007, 05:40 PM
Thanks very much for that Wayne...
Had ratio locked on "Pixel" instead of Device Aspect Ratio.
Elongated the image. Owe you a pint for that one.

LOL :D maybe one day I'll collect that. .... I did the same thing on a 3 hour render a couple of weeks ago by accident, it has a habit of burning it into you mind lol. Looking forward to the next update mate.

03-27-2007, 10:44 PM
Thanks are some more figures and different views
Stupid mistakes I know. Never said I was the brightest

Here are the last two w.i.p.s. I will post on this piece.
I am working on the final layout which I will submit as a piece to CG society.
Thanks for the nice comments and words of support.

03-27-2007, 10:45 PM

04-10-2007, 04:50 PM
Great job Odhinn444!

04-13-2007, 02:32 AM
this is mine, not too detailed tho, my laptop cant handle more subdiv:sad:

04-13-2007, 10:00 AM
okay...for a little while now I've been wary of these sculpting progs like Mudbox and ZBrush.....but now...I'm a

I started using it for my second entry into the hardcore modelling challenge, Harrison Ford as Han Solo.

this was my base mesh

and after about 3 hours of playing around (including time getting used to MB)

still needs alot of little details....but I must say I'm fairly impressed....especially with the ease of adding expression...that surprised me...

04-13-2007, 12:33 PM
after about 3 hours of playing around (including time getting used to MB)

....I must say I'm fairly impressed..

welCome to the darkSide brother....

04-14-2007, 02:12 PM
WIP: finishing the major detail.

04-15-2007, 02:27 AM
heres my other one I was working on, its Bruce Willis as John McClane

went from this:

to this in one afternoon:

04-15-2007, 10:01 AM
Looks good, you've really captured his look.

04-20-2007, 09:50 PM
Well I finally get to post something. This is my first official model. I made the mistake of sculpting it in a squatted pose, when I had intended to animate it. I guess I'll have to do another one with the legs stretched out, but I'm happy with it and I learned an awful lot. 4 or 5 textures (mostly orange skin, elephant skin, and treebark with a bit of 345K facecount. Anyway, Crits welcome....

04-22-2007, 06:19 AM
next one, a centaur,i know the torso a bit too long tho

04-22-2007, 03:32 PM

A study from last night.

04-22-2007, 05:08 PM
That's a nice punch! hehe
i think the wrist is a bit too thin, but i suspect it's because of the camera lense..
cool muscles as always ;)

04-22-2007, 05:16 PM
Thanks Dude,
it's the angle of the camera.
Why haven't you been posting on MudForum???
Saw 300 last night on Imax. Were those your ancestors? lol.

04-22-2007, 06:27 PM
Haha, not exactly ancestors of mine, these are Mr. Miller's interpretation :)
actually my ancestors had better armours!
I'll join Muddy place later ;)

04-23-2007, 02:25 AM
Whoa! cool muscle odhinn444, you use ur own arm for ref?

AUMAKUA, it must feel awesome to have ancestor like Leonidas, the inventor of "come and get them"

04-23-2007, 07:14 AM
I would say that it is a great commitment.

04-25-2007, 03:05 PM

04-26-2007, 06:11 PM

04-27-2007, 05:12 PM
Just started with mudbox, really like it, nice tools and a good workflow.

2)check out the neck area muscle, don't worry about hand area go through to anatomy better, as soon as possible i will give u mb file .........:)

02-16-2008, 07:16 PM
nice stuff, guys...I really get some good inspirations from this.

some head doodling:

04-11-2008, 11:50 AM
Here's one of my works in progress. I've done a lot of texture work to it in max.

It was based on the basic head model in mudbox and I didn't really mess about with the UV's which was my biggest mistake because I lost texture detail around the nose when I came to texture it.

For the most part I did it to get used to the package, it is my second head in mudbox. I'm currently using the demo on a tablet PC, and I think it is by far the best tool to model.

04-14-2008, 11:33 AM
Hi there,
few models
MUDBox + Photoshop

Face (

08-09-2008, 04:29 AM

08-10-2008, 08:06 AM
my try for the mud box for the 3d total challange archangle. This is my first sculpture in mud box. (

09-02-2008, 05:29 AM
I guess I should hop along... :)

09-02-2008, 05:32 AM

I want to join too. Here's my WIP on Skully.I hope i can work on the texture soon.

09-27-2008, 04:35 PM
Not a WIP. I'm brand new to Mudbox and haven't even used it yet. Still trying to figure out how to get rid of the danged black bar at the bottom of the working screen. But I've been looking at all these WIPs, and wondering one thing. How the heck are you guys getting the fine pores into the skin? Stencil or stamp or what? That's something I'd really like to know.

Does everyone do characters? I'll do a few, but my first use of mudbox will be to detail out a rotten wall I need for a project. And I hope to be able to make some good trees, which I have very little luck with in Max. I'm not a good organic modeler, and mudbox seems like just the tool I've been waiting for. I've never been able to grasp the concept of the UI in Zbrush.

10-17-2008, 02:39 PM
WIP - first attempt at working in Mudbox
Working from the primitive head.

Something I did as a doodle last night and this morning.

11-24-2008, 06:18 PM
Yup, a "boring" head sculpt. Maybe I'm going to submit this to a Rapid Prototyping Company. Would be cool to have this standing on my desk.

This is my first try in mudbox(and any 3d application ever) so i am noob.
Hope you like it

Luck was on my side for this render, mainly as a mate of mine was off abroad for work and I asked if he could leave his laptop behind with V-ray on it (So Ive got access to it for a couple of weeks). Now Ive not used V-ray in donkeys years, but thankfully its dead easy to set up, in fact Ill be quite sorry to lose it again in a couple of weeks.

The render in V-ray and uses a 32 bit displacement map and 3 vray lights for a basic studio lighting setup along with final gather. It was a bit of a nightmare render time wise due to the very fine detail in the displacement maps and the subsurface shader effect I used. (Plus all that high spec never helps render times, and the ss killed a lot of the fine detail anyway lol.)

Im pretty pleased with it so far, but there are still a few tweaks I want to do yet if I have time.

Quick head modeling, using the mudbox basic head.

1 hour.

I spent hours two months ago doing something much worse. Now I'm going to go sit in the corner and stew. ;-).

02-14-2009, 11:53 PM
Some tweaking of the default "human body" mesh.

02-15-2009, 05:39 PM

I worked on it some more, starts to look quite good.

Blue Creature Head Concept Animation

Final Animation Link (

The 1 hour 'speed pipeline' version (

A few days back I set myself a little test. I've done lots of 'fast' things over the years, from speed sculpting, to speed texturing, taking model from nothing to a final render in a certain time limit etc to push myself to be accurate and fast at the same time. Its a balance that doesn't always work (which is half the fun to me), but one thats helped me develop as an artist in a much more rounded way I'd like to think.

So I thought I'd try what I've called a 'Speed Pipeline' that involves coming from a blank viewport to animation ready to render out in a single hour. (Thats including sculpting, texturing, setting up the lights and shaders in max, through to rigging, skinning, and animating all inside that 60 min period.) It certainly wont win any animation awards, but yet again I dont consider myself an animator in any way shape or form..thats a 'calling' not a skill as far as I'm concerened. But it was fun thats for certain....I stuck some very loud 80's metal and went for it. The second video link is the result of that 1 hour period. While the 1st one is with proper textures and a bit of post work that I consider 'final' as its time to move onto another model or 6.

He uses a 2k texture set of diffuse and normal spec as although I painted one it simply didn't help the look of the model at all. All anaimting was done in max using a simple bone rig and a couple of morph targets. It was tough as hell to get done in 1 hour but I'm glad I did it.

Hi guys, Im coming back to 3D since a very long vacation ha ha ha... and I discovered MudBox and trying to learn now. I took a look at this forum and your pieces are excellente. Pretty cool stuff of all of you guys. Well, from now on, Im going to make some posts to share my wips with the community! thanks for this great place to share!

03-20-2009, 08:04 PM
A little compilation of WIP states. I made a very low-quality basemesh in
3DSMax and ported it to Mudbox 1.0. The guy is intentionally disproportioned,
e.g. massive torso, stubby legs and so on. I also did a little paintover, but I never
picked the model up again after that. The pic on the lower right is the last state
so far.

Terrible Basemesh: 3DS Max 9
Refining: Mudbox 1.0

04-03-2009, 06:44 AM
Wow, that looks wicked. Is that some sort of soviet superhero/supersoldier ?
I'd like to see a workflow on that one, especially how you did the holster.

04-05-2009, 05:00 PM
thank you ,
yes he's the distant cousin from capt america :-)

if you want to see teh full charachter can go to the main thread

teh holster was build as a low poly object .. nothing crazy ,. just point snap to the medium res body
hope it make sense .. :-)

These are some screengrabs from Mud.Sculpting's pretty much done.Texturing is ongoing, more a test to see how Mudpainting performed.

This is Mr. Lobo,a guy manically depressed, who works in a soul destroying office job who decided to get a lobotomy so he could continue his mind numbing work but not have to think about it.

04-09-2009, 06:43 AM
hehe cool and funny little dude :-)

as always ..
no rendering .
mudbox real time screen shot .. and post process in photoshop

04-10-2009, 11:32 AM
I love this character. What a great style.I spent ages on your site and i have to thank you for producing such wonderful works of art and inspiring guys like me:beer:

I noticed on Mudboxhub you said you were having your doubts and frustrations about Mud.
It would be sad to lose such a talented artist from the seemingly small pool of guys using the app.I can only predict a great future for the software.Don't return to the ZBdarkside:cry:

04-10-2009, 06:27 PM
Here's an update on Mr. Lobo.Testing out SSS shader and eyeshaders in Max and MR.

Hi, I'm pretty new here, I hope that you like my works.

Speed sculpt (6h) based on Diablos Unburried concept, done in Mbx 2010:

10-31-2009, 12:30 AM
This concept for this character was coloured by a comic inker friend.I liked it so much that i wantedto create him in 3D.He's still a WIP.This image is a printscreen from Mudbox with a bit of PS messing about. Eventually i'll finish sculpting and create some maps/shaders for a proper MR render.

EDIT: final MR rendered(PS comped) image below

11-05-2009, 06:57 PM
An old mesh i polymodeled and used to test texturing between Mud/PS.

@Darth Wayne: Love the monster, great character.

New stuff by me, gone a bit crazy on the details.

03-03-2010, 08:53 AM
My second try with mudbox. I'm not a professional of this software.I like working with these kinds of softwares on my spare time.I tried Zbrush before Mudbox and i can say texturing is more fun with mudbox. All crits are welcome :)

03-08-2010, 02:54 PM
next one, a centaur,i know the torso a bit too long tho
What is the metod to make the character pose on mudbox after the sculpt session?

03-08-2010, 03:38 PM
nice horseman...

i will give you the answer at the end of this week....

03-08-2010, 06:00 PM
What is the metod to make the character pose on mudbox after the sculpt session?

you can go to the lowest level, export this base mesh into your 3d software, pose, and then import this posed mesh as a layer in your model.

03-09-2010, 12:18 PM
Ok I can try and I will let you know.
Thanks a lot

ok so this is my first time ever making anything 3d in any type of program it took me about three hours working on and off(because I was watching tv lol) but yeah I need some advice. how do i put eyes into this model and how to a get textures(like fur and skin tones) onto it like everyone elses models? I dont know all the tech stuff about mudbox this is my first time using it. I didnt make a basic mesh like some people might do(atleast thats what ive heard) I just did everything in mudbox. also is it possible to animate this sculpture how do I do that? This is in no way done close to being done. its in need a major work. comments would really really help please.

04-16-2010, 05:46 AM
just doodling

04-16-2010, 06:01 AM
how did you get eyes into the sculpture? also did you start off with a base shape from like maya ir 3Ds max and then do the detail or did you do it all in mudbox?

04-19-2010, 06:40 PM
how did you get eyes into the sculpture?
separate object with separate shader .. just a diffuse map

? also did you start off with a base shape from like maya ir 3Ds max and then do the detail or did you do it all in mudbox?
started with my own base simple head meshe , but could have started from a cube or the mudbox default head do not matter as i would retopologise later anyway :-)

here another style research

05-14-2010, 10:13 AM
trying my hand with mudbox, so much simpler to use than zbrush, what do you think?

05-31-2010, 10:46 PM

Worked on the head, and just started working on the facial hairs- testing the beard, still needs some tweaking. The hear, not sure how i'm gonna do it.I'm thinking- some poly's with transparency placed over what i have so far. I might end up painting some of it in Photoshop...

He's a good guy, but sometimes he will get into some hairy situations...

Hi guys, this is my 1 work with mudbox, in the screenshot u can see different lines because I was trying to remeshing my work.
But I have some trouble with my mesh, because when I retopologize i can see micro holes long my mesh :(

09-22-2013, 10:00 PM
Hi all,

Well I have been using mudbox about 2 weeks and I have no idea about anatomy at all, and it really shows in this model. This is my first ever full bodied character ever done in mudbox.

Ok before anyone says. I have no idea how to do noses, ears, open mouths, or elbows LOL.

Actually I have practiced mouths, but I find open ones hard to do. I modelled the initial mesh in 3ds max, and I made the open mouth. It is a troll so the mouth is oversized on purpose.

I really want to learn human anatomy, but I was asked to make a troll, and I said why not. Never done one before, but I will give it a go.

This is a long way off finished. Want to add more detail. Then I gotta unwrap it in max, and then work out how to retopologize it for a game engine.

Also have to work out how to make gums and teeth yet. My choice are to build them in 3ds max first. Or just do it all in mudbox.

10-08-2013, 12:51 AM
Hi all,

Well this is still work in progress, as it isn't quite finished yet. High poly on the left and low poly on the right. I have a sneaking suspicion that the problem with the normalmap is that I used raycasting and that is why the hands were normalmapped onto the body, and the glitches.

I orignally used max to uv him and it is a long process. You have to use pelt mapping, and then stretch it to make sure the uvs are square and all that, but I found something out. 3D coat not only has a really good retopoly tool, but a good uv tool as well. I did the re-uvs on the new topology model in like 15 minutes.

Well I hope the glitches will be sorted out the next time I post this heh heh.
