View Full Version : Noob Question: Ammunition Belts

02 February 2007, 12:02 PM
First post in the 3D area, I'm primarily a 2D person. I'm taking a class on Maya, so I know most of the modelling basics, and as a side project I'm modelling a rather anachronistic gun.
It's a light belt-fed ( machine gun, and the belt is what I'm not at all sure about. It doesn't seem hard to model just to have a stiff model, but I would like to eventually animate it or something to that effect. I need the bullets to be able to slide in these two directions:

The "front" sliding must also form an arc around the other bullet since they are to be linked in some way. I'd prefer a cloth-bound belt, but if a metal one with disintegrating links is easier to model, it'll be good too. Any tips? D:

this was one of the first projects i attempted in maya.

look into animation snapshot and motion trails.

animation snapshot will duplicate the bullet across a timeline and path. adjusting the motion trail will give you the movement (up/down/side to side) needed for the bullet.

Thanks, that helped. It'll probably take a lot of playing with it to get it to do what I want, but even in its most basic state it's still very useful.

no problem.

i think my post might read more difficult than it actually is.

I played around with it some more, but I'm not really sure how to effectively use it still. Right now all I can do with it is just Duplicate with translation and rotation, which is obviously a lot less than what it can do. Haven't had any luck with using an animation path. ...and I have no idea how the motion trails work. Any tips? I don't know if this is over my head, but is there a way to interactively control the shape of the belt and such? Not just in the resulting animation (not what this is for), but for interactive placing in the scene? I really need to stop being so clueless.
All I can do is pretty much model, texture, and light for still images, clueless about everything else.
