View Full Version : Dominance War II: Red Republik

02 February 2007, 08:03 PM
the ancient titans reached the pinacle of art and technology, then went dormant. They were awakened by the war that was tearing the galaxy apart, and sent their own warriors to restore peace. they don't use guns or bombs, relying instead on melee weapons and their incredible strengh and intelligence. they wear high tech armor of beautiful craftmanship, and carry shields that protect them from ballistic weapons.

02 February 2007, 07:03 PM
Nice, should make for some good material contrast between the skin, armor, cloth and glowies... The shin guards are very cool. Can't wait to see the weapons\shield... Will we get to see his face?

02 February 2007, 09:35 PM
yes you will. here is a mudbox screenshot. it still has tons of work to make it look right. i want it to have a sculpural feel.

02 February 2007, 10:05 PM
here is the helmet sketch. i'm not sure if he will be wearing the helmet or holding it. comments welcome

02 February 2007, 05:12 PM
here is the helmet wip

02 February 2007, 06:12 PM
hmm, looking great so far, my initial ideas are going in a similar direction but I'm a fair bit behind on nailing my design. I'll be really interested to see where you take this.

Again, this is a nice design in different circumstances, but this is not a contest where understatement wins votes.
The first and foremost criteria is sheer popularity.
You have to be big, bold and badass in this contest, and think outside the box.

02 February 2007, 10:54 PM
i am starting to agree with you, oDDity. I want to keep this basic idea but take it to the next level. unfortunatly, subtlety is my strength, not over the top designs. any suggestions on where i could take it? btw i am a big fan of your art style.

02 February 2007, 04:23 AM
I updated the concept, but i still need to flesh out the weapon and shield.

02 February 2007, 06:14 AM
Hey man this is coming along nicely, keep it up

The sort of outrageous leetness of design required here isn't my strong point, but all you have to do is look at previous winners to see what the judges want, and the other entries which make you think 'this guy really has a good chance of winning' to see what qualities make up a potential winner.

02 February 2007, 02:41 PM
i like your design, and i like it because it is does not have that typical "look" of the others. i wouldn't try to conform yours to be like the others. looking forward to see how this one develops.

02 February 2007, 06:33 PM
trying to push the idea further without losing the initial thoughts behind it.

02 February 2007, 02:03 AM
this is a normal map test of the treatment i want give the sheild and the armor. this is not the final shield by any means.

02 February 2007, 04:31 AM
Hey I like where this is going, nice work so far

02 February 2007, 02:54 PM
Great designs man. The shield is looking astonishing too.

02 February 2007, 03:01 PM
looking great in my opinion, out of interest are you using crazybump for the shield normal map?

02 February 2007, 03:38 PM
thanks for the comments.

Matt, i am not using crazy bump for the shield yet. i will use it for smaller details, but so far it is just mudbox.

03 March 2007, 03:26 PM
here is my model progress. still a long way to go. i hope to have the high poly model done by wednessday

03 March 2007, 08:06 PM
my friend did a paintover of my render. i am going to try and replicated the proportions and power of his sketch

03 March 2007, 09:52 PM
I like the new proportions, but tone down the neck a little, or start he trapezious bulging at half or so of the neck.

03 March 2007, 02:16 PM
trying to finish up the high poly. i will continue tweaking the proportions once the low poly is finished. i am also going to try to redesign the head if i have time. one week!?!?!?

03 March 2007, 08:36 PM
here is a WIP HP head

03 March 2007, 10:30 PM
very nice head modeling. i think the torso proportions right now looks more like a body builder . i would suggest something more like a traditional greek warrior

03 March 2007, 03:27 AM

You don't have to fully pump up muscles everywhere, since unlike a bodybuilder, not many people fully utilize their muscles entirely. Like how a swimmer has a V torso and broad shoulder, while a runner has big thighs. Give him a stout enough legs and focus everything on the upper torso, like a boxer's since that's the mass most important in dishing out punches.

03 March 2007, 03:49 AM
some of the viens on the arms look random too. Make sure to referance that stuff, most people will know intrinsically that it's 'off' even if they can't describe why.

That face is damn cool though.

03 March 2007, 07:36 PM
I like the treatment on the face. He looks like an ancient Greco-Roman statue. Nice touch.

03 March 2007, 03:23 PM
it's good to get some feedback. i agree about the comments on the body. i should have focused more on that before making the additional pieces. the body will get the same treatment as the face, so that may disguise some of the muscle definition. next year, i spend more time in the concept phase!

03 March 2007, 04:27 PM
here is a render of the pretty-much-finished high poly. all the details i didnt get to model in, i will add with crazy bump. also, i will tweak the proportions in the low poly model.

03 March 2007, 02:22 AM
Looking great! The arms look a tad short, but I am enjoying seeing this develop.

03 March 2007, 06:57 AM
:scream:" This is Sparta!!!"

Very nice model! But may I ask why did you rendered the cloak in such manner as opposed to hanging it down?

03 March 2007, 03:13 AM
here is the WIP low poly and texture. i agree that the proportions are a little off, so i will tweak them tomorrow. the reason i made the cape the way i did was for the final pose.

03 March 2007, 04:37 AM
This is a really really cool entry man. The face looks spectacular and the armor is coming out extremly well. I can't wait to see this one finished!

03 March 2007, 12:51 PM
I'm a huge fan of that head, and the upper armor is nice... but the pounches on the belt really are just.. .bleh.

Still, I think you're really pulling this one off, it just needs more polish. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out ;)

03 March 2007, 06:48 PM
Cool model man...godd luck!

03 March 2007, 03:48 AM
Freakin' Bad!

03 March 2007, 02:06 AM
thanks for the feedback. i'm sorry about the bleh pouches, coldkodiak. i'll chalk that up to poor pre-planning. i'm still texturing and trying to redesign the weapon and shield.

03 March 2007, 02:08 AM
the diffuse is about 75% done. i have a temp spec on their, but i will need to redo that once the diffuse is finished. i put him on a cylinder to remind myslef to make a base. i will try to post the weapon and shield sketches later.

03 March 2007, 01:35 PM
that looks awesome!

03 March 2007, 05:11 PM
really nice work on the normals... have a slight issue with the boot glows.. are they powered? do they need fusion to run just his lower legs? I just don't see the funcitonality of those. Would be nice if the leather was detriated seing as how the helmet is.

03 March 2007, 05:28 PM
Someone liked 300 :D

He is turning out awesome, good job.

03 March 2007, 03:38 AM
good point about the leather, onelung. i spent too much time on the armor and neglected the other parts of the texture. i need to get to work on the shield. anyone have any ideas abuot the base?!?!

03 March 2007, 01:59 PM
is a very good model and great simple concept. I like so much.

03 March 2007, 02:20 PM
thanks for the comments. it keeps me going knowing that at least some people are watching my thread. here are my weapon and shield concepts

03 March 2007, 04:12 PM
Hey I really like the way this guy is coming out. Especially the way the metal of the armor looks, I'm working on the metal texture for my guy and it's the first lowpoly texturing I've done, any suggestions?

03 March 2007, 10:33 PM
here is where i am on the shield/weapon.

03 March 2007, 02:12 AM
finally got it rigged. i am playing around with poses right now. i have to finish by saturday night due to a family emergency, so i will be working hard up until then.

03 March 2007, 02:13 AM
oh crap i forgot i need to make a base too

03 March 2007, 02:33 PM
ok that's it. i have to go catch a plane. here are my final submissions. thanks for all the feedback. good luck every one!

03 March 2007, 05:59 AM
