Hello all,

Just thought I would open up a W.I.P. Thread...finally. Thanks to Matt Burke for help with the concept and ongoing crits.

Just the initial concept here. There will be more refinement before I start modeling, but critiques and comments are always welcome.

Here is a link to the large version of the concept sketch:

Good luck to everyone and lets win this war!

Very nice concept; love the sword.
I think as long as it dosent become to mechanical
this thing is gona be a really nice piece.

it would be cool to make this guy all out of bone. cool concept. can't wait to see him kick some ass in 3d.

02 February 2007, 04:24 AM
Just a quick update. I'm still trying to flush out some of the larger forms and the makeup of the center part of the character.

Here's a link to a larger version:

More to come. Comments and critiques are always welcome.

Wicked concept dude, can't wait to see where you take it.

Sweet profile...looks like you have an opp to do some cool effects too!! post some 3d!!

02 February 2007, 09:51 PM
i love this concept!:thumbsup: and one from a friend .. Good LUCK!

Thanks for the kind words Spiritt. Got a new WIP concept in. Kudos to MB for his awesome work.

Also have a few renders of the meager progress that I've made on the model.

And a quick snap of the progress on the model. VERY low poly at the moment. I'm still just blocking in forms. Hoepfuly there will be a lot of progress this week on the high-poly mesh.

High poly version of the face (To be used for normal map)

As always crits and comments welcome...sarcasm tolerated.

Thanks for looking

Woohaaa!! an update:) Damn that latest concept is lookin great and the blocking model is lookin solid as well... Very cool guys.. GOGOGO!!!

02 February 2007, 04:44 AM
nice concept. i am being sarcastic obviously. no seriously good concept. only thing thats concerning is that how much is organic and how much is mechanic.

02 February 2007, 05:56 AM
Ok, ok BirD, I get it...:) I will try and post more often, but you gotta throw more out there too. Let's see some of that sketchgroup / Mudbox magic!

Hey Mashru, do you think this is going too "mechanical"? The concept has elements of bone, bronze, and fashioned metal in it, so that is probably giving it that mechanical look. Right now, we were toying around with the concept for the spirit within the armor. It's not flushed out yet, but there will be organic, "at least in appearance" elements mixed in. Thanks for the feedback and nice work on yours so far.

I blocked out a little bit more of the concept...just waiting to see what the Burke man has up his sleeve for the next rev. For your viewing pleasure...please don't get nauseous...

Again...crits and comments always welcomed.

you have a cool concept. i have to agree with the concern about the mechanical parts. you should have maximum 20% mechanical stuff.

03 March 2007, 09:06 AM
I like your concept of a spirit within the armor.
But it does look rather mechanical right now as there is no flesh in appearance.

Then again, who knows? Maybe it will work when you've got everything finalized :)

Anyway, good luck :D

03 March 2007, 01:20 PM
wow, looks amazing I love the color range its so ritch and stil smooth and "tidy"

03 March 2007, 05:54 AM
Thanks for all the feedback guys. I'm working on some changes to push the organic nature of the character. Thanks for the reminder. Until then, just a quick update.

No normal mapping on this guy, just a stand-in bump.

High res version here:

Pushing about 750 tris on this already, so it will probably come down.

Thanks again for the feedback. Keep it coming!

Really nice texturing on the head. I'll have to check in later and see how the body and armor looks after it gets the royal treatment. Good luck.

03 March 2007, 12:21 AM
This is looking seriously cool! The color combinations you came up for him really work well and I am excited to see that you even managed to incorporate glows into his design. If your model turns out to look like your w.i.p concept, I am positive you will be a definate contender in the finals. However, there is only one problem that I can see... It's too bad you are fighting for cgsots:sad: You guys don't need anymore potential top finalists hehe

Keep up the great work man, it's really looking great so far!

03 March 2007, 12:35 AM
You guys don't need anymore potention top finalists heheThe day's not yet up and there's no telling how many of us will drop out before the end. We need all the potential finalists we can muster, thankyouverymuch.

Hey guys,

I have to say I'm really honored to hear your comments. Great feedback too. The kind words and direction are greatly appreciated.

On that note, I've been working on the body form beneath the armor. I roughed out a low-poly body. Kind of lame and flat at the moment. I'll get this into mudbox (hopefully) and start to crank on it.

I tried to make the low poly form follow the general form of the armor. Here is my first go at it:

A larger version is located here:

I'll try to push the forms once I put it in the armor.

Thanks again for the crits and comments. Please keep em coming.

Started working on the organic elements of the creature within the armor today. I did a quick pass on the head. Hopefully I'll get to the body tomorrow.

A large version of the image can be found at:

Any crits or comment welcome.

Just a quick update on the creature body (beneath the armor)

Took a first pass at roughing out the larger forms of the body. I will probably shape this a bit more, especially in the low poly, after I see it under the armor.

A larger version can be found here:

Any crits and comments are welcome.

Awe-inspiring concept! And your modeling skills are fleshing it out nicely. However, I wonder why you are spending so much time on the body beneath the armor, since in the concept it looks like the metalic parts cover the character almost completely. Are you planning to make the armor removable? (like in an actual game when it would get damaged by a CGchat hero character.) ;) Keep up the good work, this one is a killer entry. Peace,

OK, finally getting back in the game. Got less than a week, so hopefully, I can burn the midnight oil to get this done.

Here is the latest. I am all over the place in terms of the low and high poly, texturing, UVs, rigging and such, but It all comes together in the end:)

This is looking quite cool! I really like the armor design, too! The only crit I've got is on the little indentations on his shoulder guard. What are those? Bullet holes? Just wondering. I'm sure it will look even better when all the texturing is finished, but they just sort of stood out as nothing else seems to have that.

Looks great! Keep it up!

Very very nice, my concept is similar in a few small toutches, but this is a beautiful entry.
Suppose I should have got a kick ass concept artist to do the art for me huh... :)
Great stuff.

03 March 2007, 07:19 AM

Finally go the low poly mesh finished up. Sitting at about 7000 tris, so I'll bring that down during uv and optomization. I am so far back it's funny, but still worth a shot. And SPARK, I'm sure that you can eyeball the mesh and tell me EXACTLY how many poly's I can save:) I know you are cool like that.

Hit me with those crits. Thanks for the comments from all of you guys that posted on the thread.

Word...I need some sleep.

03 March 2007, 03:22 PM

I probably will not finish in time for the competition, short of a week long reprieve. Trying to finish this up on vacation wih sick kids was probably no thte best idea either...oh well:)

I'll still put together a quick weapon and throw a quick rig in there just for grins.

Thanks to all the people who posted feedback on my thread. Thanks to my boys Muppet Man, Spark, and Red Rebublik for all the feedback and critique. And a special thanks to Matt Burke for the amazing concept. I'm sorry that I let you down man. But, this has been an awesome learning experience.

Here are a few progress shots from which it's obvious to see that I have a lot of work to do:)

I'll still finish this out even if it's not in time for the competition. This has been an awesome learning experience. Good luck to everyone!
