Im not sure if 3500 Tris is mid-low poly. I noticed that the legs are 8 sided, You might want to start with 6 sided cylinders and tweak it along the way. The arms are too detailed specially in bicep and hand region. Again, if you are pushing for low poly, take my crit and redo the arms and legs. If you are pushing for 3500 tris, then thats cool. I believe Mid and low poly is around 2000. Low poly being around 1000.

yeah the limit for the comp is 3500 tris, so I'm trying to make use of all that I can. My understanding of poly count is that the definition seems pretty variable. You couldn't really call this guy low-poly but he's definitely not high (think UT2003). I wanted to leave as much detail in the arms as possible, since aside from the face they are his most prominent and visible feature.

hey dosadi, how did you manually smooth him or did you use auto smooth.

I just split him up into different smoothing groups. I would select a goup of polys and then assign a group. Sometimes though I would select a group and then hit autosmooth, although all this does is essentially drop it into another smoothing group. This is Max by the way. Theres a bit of artifacting from the compression and the lighting setup but overall hes smoothed up pretty good, theres probably a few areas that could be improved though. Arent there always. Umm, in Maya you would select edges and then use the soften/harden command and assign an angle value. I like smoothing groups better, although sometimes I just want to soften an edge in Max and cant do it =(

okee-dokee.. started texturing.. These textures are nowhere close to being done.. but pretty good for one evening's work.
All crits would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks.
