View Full Version : Dominance War II: ma3stro, mabuffaloe, Genesisa

Hey everyone! We're joining the fray a little late here but hope to cover some ground quickly once we finalize our concept. Individually we don't have time to finish this competition so we hope that by banding together we can create a great entry!

Our idea is that the Ancients are a highly advanced race that have harnessed the spiritual power of the Universe. While they could easily smite the other three civilizations from the cosmos, even in their vengeance they are just and fair. In order to balance the playing field they have taken physical form and adopted weapons and tactics that allow them to meet the other races on their own battlefields. They appreciate a good fight, and besides, a little recreation after millennia of slumber isn't a bad thing...

We have a few ideas in mind for Ryaco Ganoi but here's the first one:

Ryaco is an Adjudicator, specializing in settling conflicts by force. In this mortal conflict he has taken humanoid form and carries a large and powerful mace for close-combat, which he can swing with abnormal strength. For ranged combat he carries an undetermined weapon (we're still thinking so ignore the gun-looking thing in the concept - we're open to suggestions!). By choosing to take mortal form the Ancients have become physically vulnerable (though whether they really "die" is questionnable), so Ryaco wears a deceptively simple suit of flexible combat armor.

We still want to do another iteration of this concept with thicker body armor (this looks a bit too close to his body) including some sort of inscriptions or glyphs of some kind. Also the crotch-guard looks a little uncomfortable so we might replace that with a shorter piece of cloth or sash. Knees also seem a bit low on the legs.

BTW, here's the rough job breakdown for our entry:

Genesisa - Concept and model sheets
ma3stro - modeling
mabuffaloe - texturing

Feb 5th Update - Concept Artists do not count as a member in any team. However, they must put their Name and contact info (email and/or website) on their concept sheet(s).

they ok that way sine concept artist don't count

Hey that concept is looking pretty cool! I am really loving that beard! You should add a knife on the end of it so he can use it as a weapon! I'm going to have to keep my eyes on this entry!

hey guys, i like the concept but im not too sure about the hair on the top of his head, i feel it makes him look really young, i would go for bald or some balding and make his face older, right now I look at him and get mixed signals. is he a young, baby faced man, or a wise ancient warrior? also im excited to see the finnished product with that talent pool.

zeke3d > You might be on to something. One of the reasons we wanted him younger with a beard is to imply a bit of non-human characteristics related to the Ancients' much longer lifespan. Genesisa wasn't around so I made some attempts at aging him, first to look older:

And then to look middle-aged:

When Genesisa has some more time we'll work on the back view and weapons and settle on the age issue. Thoughts?

Thanks for all the comments, guys :) And I'm gonna do my best, Revliss! Which is why I prefer the older versions... they will be much more interesting to texture ;) Once we get those weapons figured out, we'll be ready to roll. Looking forward to it!

I reaaly like this concept...but I think the bold one is the coolest...just a opinion.

+ face is really unique and great character in it.
+ the idea of harnessing aura or what not, sweet!
+ the style you guys are shooting for is nice .

- Another human...
- ...with armor?

I really wish you guys the best, maybe push the proportions a tad to keep him fresh but I know this piece will turn out ace. Go-Go-Buffaloe!

Hey Guys..

I agree with Steve .. I think you need to kick up the badass factor if your going to make another human with armor.

The armor looks a bit piecemeal. You need to carry some of the design elements throughout the whole character.. The abdominal area look should be incorporated into his gauntlets or leg armor.. the cloth could be flowier.. and mess with those proportions. Exaggerate it till it looks ridiculous then pull it back just a little...

I did a quick paintover. Hope its not overstepping any bounds, but I want my girl buffaloe to take home a ps3..

Thanks guys, the comments are more than welcome. I agree with everything you have said (badass paintover by the way). I spent about a day on this WIP below and at the end thought "man he looks really pedestrian". I really want to stylize him more and exaggerate the personality because he needs to be over-the-top! Thanks for the help and, if you have any time to go further with refinements on that excellent paintover be my guest! ;)

P.S. I really do more Excel than modeling, so part of this WIP was to see if I can still move points around in 3D. :)

I think what I'm going to do next is build a quick blockout of the entire character, just to make sure everything is going to look OK and test out some more ideas. I'll incorporate some of your suggestions.

I think that what Anole said makes sense, it looks better, but makes it lose the "old ancient master" look, although that's perfectly shouldn't stick to a single idea only because the concept looks good. I agree with him, stylized is a shot for a price (plus it's more fun making it), average is lose.

So Genesisa, why don't you delight us with some other concept...taking out some of the generic look that we can see in most entries :buttrock:

Alright. So today I had a really nice plan to block out the character but:

1.) Instead I had to deal with one of our servers going down at the studio,
2.) The last time I modelled a character was 4 years ago and I'm afraid I really suck at it,
3.) And besides, I had to make some really impressive PDF docs to go along with #1

So to pass the time between things I downloaded the Mudbox trial to see what I could do with it (I have tried Zbrush a few times and didn't really like it). I wanted to see if I could add some stylization to the head I modelled in XSI. Unfortunately I spent most of the day trying to figure out how to delete a few ngons and tris in my base mesh so I could use that fancy tangential symmetry they got der. Really. Like most of the day.

Here's the result of a few hours of messing around once I (finally) obliterated all of my Mudbox-hostile geometry:

I'm still kind of sticking to the face in the original concept. I think it might be cool to stylize it a bit and add some of the elements you guys were suggesting for the body and armor. I meant to make his neck a lot thicker to go along with that but I forgot. I think I kinda screwed up the bridge of his nose a bit too.... oops. So much for anatomy!

Reminds me of a kung fu movie I saw once where the old master had 8-foot long hair, with tiny barbs and blades hidden in it. Whipped his head around and SLICE! Just an idea for that cool beard.

hey guys, me again. This time I contribute a little bit, I made some changes to the model with the liquify filter and some paintover. Don't trust the new eye shape, it got messed up. Yours was fine. Please give it a look HERE (

mabuffaloe it's very nice to see you around. I'd really appreciate some reply of yours in my thread ( (btw the fact of being from the competence will not stop you from doing it..............right? :))

Hey! Looking pretty sweet so far. I like the corrections DDS made to the head. This guy is gonna have a cool look! You should find the time to try and blockout his body so you can take a look at and adjust his proportions. Keep us posted! Hey Mel!

Thanks for the suggestions DDS. I'm not sure I want to do that to his chin because it makes him look *really* thin and gives less surface area for his beard. I'll keep it in mind though when I come back to the head later and see how it looks. In the mean time I took some comments from st33d about the furrowed brow and eye sockets. I think he *hates* furrowed brows. ;)

Unfortunately I spent the entire Sunday playing IT manager and so gots no Dominance War progress to show. Somewhere, a baby is crying.
