Here is my concept. :) Hope you enjoy. It should be fun to make!

I may or may not color this its not always how I work. I prefer sometimes to let the model dictate where I go, much like how I paint I suppose. I may come back to the concept and color it after I begin the model to help guide myself.

02 February 2007, 12:14 PM
this is a BEAST :) it looks powerfull, no kidding with this one

02 February 2007, 03:12 PM
What a butcher!
It's good to be on your side... :D

02 February 2007, 06:05 PM
Thanks, I'll be posting some model stuff this weekend.

02 February 2007, 11:55 PM
Very cool concept, man. This guy looks very brutal. Can't wait to see the model.

02 February 2007, 02:08 AM
 <- about sums up my reaction to that sketch

02 February 2007, 08:55 AM
Finally got working on it this weekend. Still alot to tweek on the texture, spec map, normal etc. Not to mention posing it.

02 February 2007, 05:08 PM
Forgive my lapse in posting.

Here is what I've done recently. Its a nice break from the stuff I do at work.:buttrock:

02 February 2007, 09:33 PM

Working out the color scheme.

02 February 2007, 10:24 PM
Great looking sketch with a crazy concept. Looking forward to seeing this come alive!

02 February 2007, 08:25 PM
Great looking concept dude, just wondering what ties it back to the theme of the challenge. It's got a great design, and would make a wonderful beast. But as far as ancients awakening I don't quite see it yet. Maybe if you incorporated away of it being linked to some type of master of the ancient race, or something else like that it would fit the theme better. Just a thought, keep up the awesome work though :)

02 February 2007, 08:38 PM
Beautiful concept. I dig it.

In my opinion, the "Ancients" doesn't need to be taken as literal as some would think. I think it's been discussed before...but it really is open to your imagination. It "could" be this ancient, angel like being or it could be a huge monster with chains and guns. Mybe the Ancient race is thousands of years more advanced technology wise but never eveolved from looking like dinosaurs. I think the possibilites are near endless...again, that's my take on it though.

Well, they're an immortal race, that's clear from the way they refer to others as mortals, so the assumption is that they were highly developed to the point when they evolved immortality, either technologically or biologically, they're only 'ancient' relative to newer star systems.
What they are is essentially a very highly advanced race who are immortal.
My guess would be that advanced machines of some kind would be their shock troops.

Thank you Sestan, Skyephelps, and Gavin_G for nice compliments. So many great entries that its a bit intimidating. I'm going pretty slow on the model since I keep addressing some design changes I may make. Not so much in the creature but adding other elements to it, such as more gear or stuff in general. Plus I don't get a lot of time to work on it during the week.

I think you are all right about the backround of these things we're making. I guess I'm drawing off the ancient aspect more so than the advanced. I was thinking that maybe they could be highly intelligent creatures far beyond what we understand and therefore don't adhere to the rules by which we think ( guns, armor, etc ) and possibly use bits of ruins, scriptures or tablets of power as weapons or protection. At least that makes sense to my little mind. I guess I missed the part where we had to come up with a background...oops. I'd better get busy!

02 February 2007, 07:10 AM

Here is my update. I've been mudboxing for a few hours and came up with with this.

Still have to add more detail to various areas of the torso and arms. I also need to redo the tenacles since they look more like turds oozing from of the body rather than living appendages.

I can't wait to get going on the texture.

02 February 2007, 11:51 PM
looking nice, i kinda liked how the concept was a bit more top heavy... this guys feels a tad weaker, just in presence, love his mouth :)

02 February 2007, 12:07 AM
Looks good man:thumbsup: , btw, Is the thing on his back a weapon?

02 February 2007, 03:33 AM
The items on his back are sort of like weapons. Think of them as ammo and he is the weapon ;). That is how I have figured it. The items he carries with him are ancient ruins and tablets of power and he uses them and thats why they are chained to him.

02 February 2007, 08:59 PM
great work on the anatomic details.
keep it comming ... :)

02 February 2007, 06:45 PM

When you say top heavy, what do you mean? I'm curious to hear you're ideas and suggestions.

Anyone for that matter, please feel free to point out some things I may be missing:). I'm still working on the ruin piece that goes on his back along with the chains and tablets that hang off.

really cool model, texturing is coming very well.
keep it up.

03 March 2007, 03:26 AM
very nice, i love the detail in his muscles

would you mind posting your uv layout?
i'm curious as to how it's laid out

03 March 2007, 06:37 AM
Thanks guys.

I'll post my uv's next time I post. In the mean while here is a tiny update.

I tweeked the diffuse texture and played with the spec alittle.

03 March 2007, 08:15 PM
He looks great. What are the red things in the cannon?

03 March 2007, 09:23 PM
As much as it looks like a dog dick  , the thing at the end of the ruin is just a crystal ( a very powerful crystal though, mind you!! ). I'll be adding translucency and specularity so that it will look more crystal-like soon.

Also, here are the uv's as promised. I'll be reducing polys when I'm done, since they are excessive in spots. Now you know my secrets ;)

03 March 2007, 12:57 AM
As much as it looks like a dog dick
hah that's funny stuff...
thanks for the UVs dude, i was wondering how you laid out your hands is why i asked for them, now i see how.
thanks again, & keep up the good work

03 March 2007, 03:04 PM
As much as it looks like a dog dick

hehe! :D

Maybe you could make him white/blue (gradient?) ... and the problem is gone.

03 March 2007, 08:31 PM
Make the crystal blue and white?

03 March 2007, 03:42 AM
Man this is a great model. Very nice anatomy work too.
I was wondering, how did you get the stacked uvs to work @@?
It never worked for me I always have the normal flipped inside out on one of the arms
if i mirror and stack them on top of each other =.=

03 March 2007, 10:41 AM
Looks cool, but certainly add a specular level map and glossy map to make the mouth wet + slimy = disgusting

03 March 2007, 03:51 PM
I mean a gradient falloff from light blue to white ... to make the crystal more "crystal-like"
btw. better to recognize.

03 March 2007, 05:56 PM

Thank you and I hear ya. the uv thing happends to me also. Two things I've noticed when making UV layouts.
First, is laying out the uv's top to bottom helps. What I mean is since the strongest light is usually above us ( the sun for instance ) so I try and layout the uvs in a way that all the pieces are in the same direction as one light would hit them, mainly from above. Does that make sense? Look at my uv layout to see what I mean.
Second, is to make a secondary uv channel where all the pieces are laid out one to one.

Oh yeah, I want this guy to be slimy :). I keep reworking the spec and color spec to get the effect I'm looking for, but since I stink at rendering I can't seem to get it to look the way I'd like. You wouldn't know it to look at it, but the spec on him right now is so dang hot with white spots I'm suprised he isn't all white in this picture. Thanks for disgusting encouragement .

I took your advice, but used orange and yellow instead. Now all I need is to get it to gleem. Everything is in the specularity.

BTW, I'm terrible at rendering, so if any of you know any links on rendering please send them my way. I've been looking into different ways to render this guy out.

03 March 2007, 06:42 PM
Looks cool man, love the bloody maw. DoF may be a bit distracting as it is right now though. Looks cool, good job.

03 March 2007, 08:04 PM
Yeah, I'm not going to use DoF for my finally render I just like how it makes the model look minature :). Thanks, the blood is a bit too red and fresh for me, I'm trying to make it look old and dried at the moment.

03 March 2007, 09:52 PM
The crystal is turning out great now.

hmmm about lighting you could take a look into the lighting forum ... there you got a
lot of infos and tutorials about building a decant lighting rig.

For shure all is depending on the situation you will present your char.

I like your preview rendering a lot ... but i agree with the dof ... its a littlebit too much ;)

All in all i really like your entry.

03 March 2007, 05:28 AM
Here's a small update to show his back. He's currently 5776 tris, but I may add some more chains and tablets, plus I need to change up the symbols on them, as three are the same.

What do you guys think of the blood? Too much of it? I'm thinking of removing some.

03 March 2007, 05:40 PM
I think the blood is fine and your character as a whole looks sweet but I have to say that the crystal is really distracting. It doesn't feel like it "fits" with him. Maybe you could plug that whole with an eyeball or some flames that are leaking out.

I know what its like to really try to make something work and then decide to get rid of it all together. It seems like a step backwards but I honestly think that if you pull it off your entry stands a chance for the win.

Just my opinion. Good luck :)

PS: How did you do the chains? I'm doing something similar but I've run into a couple of problems.

03 March 2007, 08:47 PM
Thank you Andrew for the vote of confidence, though I don't think I have much of a chance in this competition. Too many other great works out there and with popularity being a large part of the judging I doubt I'll place, but thank you anyway.

I see what you mean about the crystal and you've got me rethinking it. I'm going to play with another idea or maybe just make it an extension of the stone itself. Thanks for the observation, it was very helpful.

As to the chains they are only planes with a high poly chain baked in.

03 March 2007, 09:26 PM
I think it looks great dude, you should be really proud. Looks hot :)

03 March 2007, 12:17 PM
I make Andrewbina my words,
And I say **** popularity, do it for yourself, people in the forum insists in acting like complete strangers anyway, and fight club would never get a oscar

03 March 2007, 04:39 PM
Hey man looking good, I think that you should remove a little of the blood like you were talking about, but overall looking cool!

03 March 2007, 05:43 PM
his skin color is so awesome
the blood is awesome too, really adds a lot.
i looking foward to seeing his tongue wiggle around, as gross as that sounds. Please rig him and render out a tongue wiggle .avi :)

good luck with this one

03 March 2007, 10:29 PM
Gavin - Thanks man. I'm definitely happy with it no doubt, I did sound kind of pathetic huh? I need a hug ;)

rept0r - I hear ya. One of the main reasons I entered the contest was to do something different from what I do all day at work. This is the kind of work I like to do personally anyway...monsters and shit, you know?

Redfish - Thanks, I removed a little blood since that post. Not too much, just blended it into the skin to look more stained and old. Hope you like it.

dpizzle - Thanks :) I'll see what I can do this week to make a wiggle for ya :bounce:

03 March 2007, 08:28 PM
Looks very cool man, the only thing I would comment on is to avoid showing your work on a black background. It's pretty minor, but detail can get lost...maybe using a dark grey would make your model pop out more :)

Looks awesome though, you've done a great job

03 March 2007, 02:24 AM
dude, this came out great

i agree with gavin, he would look SO much more interesting on a dark grey background, such as the color of these forums, or a gradient of such.

03 March 2007, 03:28 AM
pretty nice...glad you finally got it rigged

03 March 2007, 03:31 PM
Yup, a little lighter background might have been nice, I agree. Sadly, I rushed him out the door to get somewhere yesterday and now wished I hadn't submitted him just yet. I didn't even change my thumbnail DOH!. No use crying over spilled milk, its out of my hands now:shrug:

Good Luck to everyone in the entire competition, it was great fun  . I suppose I should start posting some of my work here, now that I've gotten involved in an official contest.

Yeah, I got it rigged Saturday morning ( Whew!)

03 March 2007, 06:44 AM
Wow the final one is looking awesome!

What i really love. is how you fixed the crystal ...
and the "hanging chain thingys" (forget the word ;))
They provide secondary movement and dynamic.

03 March 2007, 07:11 AM
Sick dude! Your guy has mad emotion. Good job.

03 March 2007, 07:39 PM
lookin good man, yep It feels good to make it to the finnish line

03 March 2007, 04:31 PM
Thanks guys. I was playing around with rendering it again to torcher myself. Here it is. Man I need to find a new project.

03 March 2007, 03:39 AM
It looks really good.

04 April 2007, 05:35 AM
I've lost track of time, when is the judging again?

04 April 2007, 01:43 PM
it's gotta be any day now....

hope that helps! :D

04 April 2007, 04:46 PM
i would keep bumping up the spec on him, and keep it out of the stone thing on his back, also try removing some lights for more of a dramatic effect and to get the normal map to really pop. If it was up to me, it would be May 15th by now!

05 May 2007, 07:24 PM
Andrew and Pascal,

Thank you guys for considering me amongst all of the other talent entered in the Dominance War this year.

Maybe I'll give it another go next year.
