View Full Version : Dominance War II: Mantegra

Hello all.
Decided to enter this contest because I haven't done any characters in a while and thought this comp would help to improve my skills and to see what I'm up against.
Here is an initial sketch I did yesterday. I just read the rules again today and it said that the flesh is not allowed to merge with the machine, so I am going to change the head piece today because I made a boo-boo.
Anyway, my thoughts on this character are it being a hybrid ancient human/alien. It's armour plating is a mix between being ancient and futuristic.
Weapons may include a shield/gauntlet, along with a sword, pole or staff of somekind. I'll have to keep reworking the concept to see what looks best.
My thoughts are this character would be a basic 'grunt' and attack at close quarters and thrives on bloodlust. Death is not an option. It lives for the kill.
Anyway, better get back to it and good luck with everyone elses submissions!

Name: Overkill

Description: The elitist of shadows, this ancient soldier yearned for the day that war would come again. Like the 'Spartans' these soldiers are trained to kill from the time of birth up until they are ready to storm into the battlefield. Their bloodlust in battle is unmatched yet they still retain the utmost of discipline.
Overkills wear highly technologically advanced battlesuits to protect them not only from their enemies but also the particular environment they are in. Even though they wear technologically advanced armour they still prefer to fight the way their forefathers did centuries ago, that is hand to hand combat.

Weapons: Sword-spike, Gauntlet, Shield with harpoon launcher

Notes: Body is human. Possessed by the spirits of bloodlust. Changed head to make it not part of the armour/machine and is now separate. Any constructive crits would be appreciated. ;)

Robust concept and character man! He has that ancient feeling but needs some armor adjustments...don't quite now yet but maybe some runes would help, maybe sculpting the entire armor also!!
Waiting for more fellow warrior!

the concept is fleshing out nicely, looks very cool, straight out of quake 4

yes a nice drawing, but he looks very space marinish, and fit so good, but keep it up, maybe it turns out very ancient!
(i know it's the same discussion as in many threads, what is ancient in 3106 and so on, but hey, i live in a free land )

Wow great concept and great detail! I really like it. I'm not a big fan of the knife-sword though.

I haven't been online in awhile due to moving house and not having an internet connection for a week. But now I am back online and ready to update.
Anyway, I decided to change my concept from a human to an alien because I have done so many human characters in the past and wanted to challenge myself by modelling something that is not bipedal. Anyway, onto the update...

Description: Ancient alien organism builds large skyscraper termite-like mounds out of mud/dirt/rocks/bones and live in colonies. For thousands of years they have been silent but there monumental structures and way of life have suddenly been threatened by a new force and thus have taken to the battlefield to defend their homeland.
They are comprised of fleshy bits covered in an organic exoskeleton. There exoskeleton protects them from harm and there bodies are naturally built for the kill. 10 feet in height. Like a chameleon it can change it's colour of skin to blend into environment.
Attacks similar to funnel-web spider whereby it digs a hole/trap then when victim comes by it snatches it into it's lair.
Jellyfish-like barbed tentacles extrude from the second row of arms and are used to grab it's victim and then it is reeled in and slaughtered by the overkills blades on front arms. Overkills do not kill their opponents/victims... they eat them!

Weapons: Paralyses victim by stinging it with it's sting on end of it's tail and then lays egg inside victim. Victim is still alive but dazed and after a few hours of incubation the parasite eats it's way out of it's host and then finds other victims to feed on.

Decided to go with concept 2:

Ok, I wasn't happy with where my 'alien' creature was going so I decided to do one last final concept. This time it is back to a human figure but more more of an ancient fire deity awoken by the meaningles squabbles of the new war. I am not going into detail about it, the concept explains itself... he is able to generate a large meteroic fireball through his 'mystical' gauntlets and when he throws it it turns into a comet and disintegrates everything in it's path... much like a nuclear bomb :)
Now, there are 2 designs I made for the head... not sure which one I like best atm but that can be decided later...

PS: I just hope I can get this one done on time before the deadline now since I have muddled around with so many concepts so far... anyway, fingers crossed.

you know, although you may feel it overdone, the first concept :

is still sweet... better than the other two just from a formal standpoint imo.

100% agree, back to the basics, for me was the best concept :)

i like your stuff, although my favorite is the first one. i would rework him a bit more, maybe change up the sword, it seems a lil 2 warhammerish or sumthin. i like the mechanism on his other arm though, maybe explore that one some more 2:) he could have like some gnarly mechanical cape? keep it up!

Yeah, you guys are probably right. It's just I have so many ideas coming out of my head I can never decide which proper road to take! I asked a colleague of mine and he said he prefered my first concept too.
As for the blade, it was just a rough fill in. I may turn it into a mechanical pole-arm or something.
In terms of progress, I probably won't get this one done before the deadline due to work and other personal commitments, but nevertheless it will still bulk up as a portfolio piece even if I don't get it done on time.
Anyway, thanks for comments!
