View Full Version : Dominance War II: GrM
Awesome, looking forward to this. this challenge certainly brings me out from lurking.
...first comes a little research, concepts shall follow.
so after some looking around I decided for a viking/norse style ancient being. so far all I really have is the helmet idea, and even that isn't in color, but I'll push ahead after some sleep.
the first sketch is just a rough painted idea that came into my head right after I read the brief, before I really started thinking about a good idea for a character. It doesn't look ancient, and the head mask thing is just a place holder.
after that I decided to put more thought into it and went to work looking and some things I think are cool. one of the things I came across was a medieval armor maker guy at http://www.hammeredwombat.com/. his stuff is kind of weird, but anyway, it gave me an idea, so heres the other sketches.
so the concept at this point (to be further developed) is some sort of intergalactic evil viking magician. When I have more time to make it, I was thinking of having runes up and down his arms, more on that later. I'm still thinking of some sort of tech for him but blah, its late and I need to stop typing for now.
just an update on the idea:
I decided to give him a little roundness, just to add some character. I also plan on giving him some kind of tattoo on his normal arm as well as on his stomach.
still not looking highly advanced yet, I'll bring that part through when I start getting him modelled. Basically the whole thing will make a bit more sense when I start modelling it. So... yup.
working on the 3d stuff. Im no pro, but Im plugging away at it. the holes in his feet are for propulsion, and the hole in his hand is for some sort of magical rune attacks.
finished mudboxing it up:
so at the point I'm at, Im realizing Im a bit too n00b to hope to win, so rather than the prize, I now seek improvement. The model is a bit too fantasy I think, but oh well, on to the point of this post. Im wondering a couple of things.
First, with the transparency alpha, do I need to apply it as a seperate material, only on the hair (the only part that needs it), or is there some easy setting I'm overlooking? it seems to be applying the transparency to the entire mesh, instead of just the selected area.
Also, with all the shifting around from mudbox and maya, it seems like I can't set it to smooth shade. I'm aware that part of the problem is the modelling, but the issue is the flat shade part.
There were a couple other things, but I have to get to work for now. Any possible help would be grand! I'm sure its simple stuff, but I still have a lot to learn. (this is my first character that I've taken from concept to this point, yay...)
also, wip critique it maybe. is it ugly? whats good so far?
