Just reserving my spot for now...working on the concepts still.

Been concepting a bunch but haven't come up with a lot that I like.
At this point I think i might go with this one:
I know i can't draw  but hopefully this will convey what i'm kinda going for.
BTW the things on the back are wings and the things above him are his arms.

Other concept wasn't quite what I wanted so I redrew it:
Purple bits are the armor. The things in the back are wings, kinda hard to tell, I know. I might mount some big guns below the head or somewhere later but we'll see.

Last one wasnt doing it for me either so i came up with something new.
I didnt draw everything i want to have him wearing. I envison him being strapped with a ton of weapons and gear yet also being really lanky and disproprtionately tall. As far as the character goes, im thinking he's an assassin/spy/gunslinger type whos a little on the insane side. Ill might add more weapon concepts later but I think ill just start modeling soon.

hey dude. its hard to convey concepts when drawing isn't your strong point, but looking at your concepts im swaying toward the more winged, 4 legged thingy, just because it a bit different to the other entries people are doing! keep going on it.
maybe try just blocking out some shapes sillioute style, to try and get a rough look and shape to your concepts and go from there.

Thanks for the advice dude, i do need to do more sillioutes/get better at drawing. I'm still going back and forth between the last guy and the big winged creature you liked.
I updated the concept for the assassain a bit though:

I decided to come up with a new concept...again. Third time's the charm hopefully.
So if you cant tell (which you probably cant) this guy is a big ancient tree warrior, all ready to smash the opposition :bounce:
The cylinder on the far right is a big tree club i might give him and the thing on his shoulder is a cannon of some sort. I imagine it firing some kind of nature-based energy...yea.
I hope to start modeling tonight but ive got schoolwork and mod-work to do as well.

Got my basemesh done (which really isnt worth showing and is about 500 polys) and started mudboxing. please tell me what you think
02 February 2007, 07:12 AM
Update: Just a bit more base-detail of the tree elements. I also screwed with the proportions a bit to beef him up some. Ill probably move up to the higher sub-d levels soon, hopefully this weekend.
02 February 2007, 07:59 AM
Update: At sub-d level 4 now woo! I added a lot of knots and hardened up some edges, especially around the joints. Hopefully he looks a bit more tree-like now. Oh and i added his eyes in.
02 February 2007, 06:35 PM
Interesting design, but the tree man doesn't seem to have any joints. How does he walk, or move his arms?
02 February 2007, 07:30 PM
I figured his limbs would be jointless but now that you mention it, maybe ill give him joints similar the ones at his shoulders and pelvis. Thanks :)
02 February 2007, 07:50 PM
It might be fun for the joints for it to look like splintered wood, almost as if you took a then branch and broke it so that the joint itself is the inner core of the tree and then you have spinter bark and trunk that's been broken and twisted and rubbed raw.
02 February 2007, 11:55 PM
Not entirely sure what you mean, could you clarify?
Still not sure if i want to give him joints or not though.

Back from my vacation (went skiing with my family and friends) and I think the model's done. i still have accessories and stuff though.
Next up ill be doing a test normal map and then ill start on the accessories.

If anyone's still following my thread, I'm still working on my entry but I dont have any updated pictures because things are jumbled up between XSI and mudbox right now. All the modeling is done except for the "hair." Hopefully, i'll be done resurfacing the model soon and i'll have the hair completed as well.

Things finally seem to be coming together. After max betrayed me by not scattering things the way i wanted i finally got the leaves working. I might change the proportions of him a bit but we'll see.
I still need to finish lumping the UVs together and modeling a few extra things.
